        Eimi.

New York: Covici, Friede, 1933 - Large octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. With the dust jacket. A couple of pages unopened, otherwise a near-fine copy in the slightly nicked jacket, spine toned. First and signed limited edition, first printing, number 15 of 1,381 copies signed by the author. This was a review copy, with the publisher's slip laid in. As explained on the limitation page, the unusual limitation was apparently simply a reflection of the number of orders received by 15 February 1933. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The Farmer's Year: A Calendar of English Husbandry

New York: Longmans, Green and Co., 1933. First American Edition, 1st Printing. A Near Fine copy of the first American Edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original black cloth (upper corners bumped, modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners with some tiny rubs through, light surface rubbing and a bit of marking to the cloth, tiny indent to the front board within the "G" of Leighton's name, tiny bend to the upper leading corner to the pages, lacking the exceedingly scarce slipcase -- but easily the nicest copy of the first American edition that we have seen). With both the text and illustrations by Clare Leighton (a renowned English/American artist, writer, and illustrator best known for her wood engravings), the book contains a dozen full black and white full-page illustrations as well as seven vignettes, a lovely letter block at the start of each chapter. Each pastedown and facing side of its adjoining free endpaper also are of Leighton's design. A highly-regarded artist, Leighton received an Award for greatest contribution to the culture of New England, New England Society of New York, New York, NY, USA (1954), an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, Colby College, Waterville, ME, USA (1940), a First Prize and Logan Medal, International Engraving Exhibition, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA (1930). In 1945 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member and became a full Academician in 1949. Some of her original works are held by the Smithsonian, and a large number of her papers are held by Duke University. An unusually nice copy of this sought-after work.

Pöörang : viies kogu luuletusi (The Turn : Fifth Collection of Poems)

Loodus, Tartu 1933 - Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 21 cm. Weight 110 gr. Wrappers, 79 pp. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Slightly frayed cover corners, occasional light rubbing on the cover, damaged bottom edge of the spine; internally perfect. Author's inscription on the half-title: "Aleksander Antsonile sõpruses. Erni Hiir. 5.II.33." (To Aleksander Antson in friendship. Erni Hiir. 5.II.33). [Aleksander Antson was an Estonian expressionist and political writer]. In the current poetry collection consisting of five cycles "the turn" is emerging since the beginning and becomes clearly evident in the last cycle, showing right-wing expression, which has led to the distancing from the critical realism. "In my work I have tried to melt away from the realism, romanticism, classicism, and to ensure the mixture of truth-seeking, working life and the pathos." Hiir's poetry from this period descriptive, rhetoric, often with use of intentionally artificial language, influenced by the ideology of Estonian nationalism raised during the severest years of the economic crisis of 1930s, and disseminated by the authoritarian power of the time. Nationalist ideologies in the poetry are linked with the patriotic motives. According to critics, a former ultra-modernist and the most influential Estonian futurist poet, sometimes incisive in his experimentation with formal extremes, Erni Hiir (1900-1989) lost what poetry he had when he yielded to the style prescribed by the philosophy of "social demand”, tended to degenerate into mere anti-capitalistic propaganda. Book's cover design and five full-page chapter divider woodcuts are created by famous graphic artist Hando Mugasto (1907–1937). During the years 1924–1933 he studied at Pallas under Ado Vabbe, and in 1935–1937 worked as a graphic art tutor there. His first works (linocuts) of the early period were of cubism and impressionist style. Later he gained recognition for xylographs, book-plates, posters, still life's. Newspaper headline is "Rolph Justifies Lynching. Led Hanging, Boy Boasts" and includes many large photographs of the lynch mob; newspaper is paginated A-D, 2-12, 15-30, measures 21 1/2" tall by 17" wide, front page is a pale pink with black lettering, interior leaves are toned newsprint with one interior leaf being pale pink; b&w, real photo postcard depicts Thurmond, partially clothed, and Holmes, unclothed, hung from a tree with onlookers nearby and measures 3 1/2" tall by 5 1/2" wide. Newspaper is in good condition with heavy wear to spine, small holes where once bound on spine, 1" closed tear in middle of spine, affecting content, moderate chipping at fore edge and heavy toning throughout; Real Photo Postcard is in very good condition with light creasing to top edge, light wear at corners and light soiling on verso. The gruesome San Jose lynching stemmed from the kidnapping and murder of Brooke Hart, the son of a local department store owner. As a lynch mob started to form, Governor Rolph was called upon to send the National Guard to keep the prisoners safe. He refused. Thurmond and Holmes were dragged from the Santa Clara County Jail by the angry mob and were hung from a tree in St. James Park. Afterwards, Governor Rolph justified the San Jose lynching saying it was "a fine lesson to a whole nation. There will be less kidnaping in the country now. They made a good job of it." .

        Winner Take Nothing

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First edition of Hemingway's third collection of short stories. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. Written when Hemingway was at the height of his creative powers, the stories in Winner Take Nothing glow with the mark of his unique talent. Hunters, wives, old men of wisdom, waiters, fighters, women loved, women lost: they are all here, living on the raw edge, making love, facing the inevitable reality of death. The characters, the dialogue, the settings, the remarkable insight could have come only from Hemingway's imagination. As an introduction to his work, or as an overview of the themes he developed at greater length in his novels, it is a stunningly successful collection.

INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA, With Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs

Edinburgh: John Grant, 1933, 1934. 3 volumes. First Edition issued by John Grant and the best and most beautifully illustrated edition of the work created in modern times, edited by Frederick Webb Hodge. With 123 full page colour plates, two photogravure portraits, and two folding colour maps at rear of Volume Three. Large 8vo, in the publisher's original navy blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spines and with vignettes stamped in blind on each upper cover, t.e.g. lxii, 442 (with index); 458, (with index); xvi, 345 (with index), [1 ad]. A fine set, the cloth and textblocks handsome, bright and well preserved, overall, very clean and fresh with only the lightest bit of edge mellowing. A SPECTACULAR WORK OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND STILL A VALUABLE SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON THE GREAT INDIGENOUS LEADERS AND PEOPLES. ONE OF THE MOST MARVELOUSLY ILLUSTRATED DESCRIPTIONS AND PRESENTATIONS OF FAMOUS NATIVE AMERICAN PERSONAGES. Originally conceived in 1821, McKenney and Hall's work is valuable because it records the features of numerous Indians prominent in the history of the United States. These are presented in portraits painted from life, showing native costumes, facial paintings, hairdressing, ornaments, etc. The data for many of the biographies was obtained during the lifetime of the individuals from personal interactions on the part of the authors. McKenney was the "Superintendent of Indian Trade" and accrued much experience in Native American relations over the years, and was eventually dismissed from his high-ranking government position in 1830 because he publicly disagreed with President Jackson's harsh and unfair policy toward the Indians, which included forced relocation from their native lands. Indeed, this book is also one of the only sources of information from this time period that respects the native tribes as a culture, recording traditional dress and social customs that disappeared as the tribes became somewhat assimilated into white society. This edition includes a wealth of commentary and reflection on the text by the editor. An excellent set of this highly significant book. Most of the original portraits were painted in oil by an important artist of the time, Charles Bird King, who was commissioned to paint pictures of each of the Indian delegates to Washington D.C. Col. McKenney, who had been superintendent of Indian Affairs in Washington, wrote biographical sketches for each portrait while James Hall wrote the larger descriptions of the history of the American Indian.

Spine faded and rubbed, some loss to spine label, boards soiled with a few areas of light dampstain to rear board, text block partly split after front free endpaper, contents foxed, overall a very good copy. First edition, first state, the Hungarian-born architect Ernö Goldfinger's copy, with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Having immigrated to England during the 1930s, Goldfinger became a prominent member of the London-based Modern Architectural Research Group (known as MARS), of which Betjeman was also a member. "The force of [Goldfinger's] personality, charming at times, explosive at others, was at the root of his achievement, and during his lifetime was almost better known than his architecture. His late work can now be seen, however, as the only major expression in Britain of the mature modern architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, deriving directly from the radical architectural thought of continental Europe in the period of the First World War" (ODNB). He threatened to sue Fleming over the use of his name for Bond's eponymous villain, a dispute which was eventually settled out of court. Playing an unusually active role in the production of this first edition, Betjeman designed the mixed modern type layout used for the front board of Ghastly Good Taste himself.

Most pages are detached thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family between 1925 and 1933 with vacation photography as well as vernacular family home images. The early images show wintery scenes of dogs and children running through snow as well as landscape photographs of farms. There are photos of horseback riding, dogs running, and herds of sheep. Many of the photos show trips to Colorado with images of Pike's Peak, hiking, and snow capped mountains. One caption from a hike reads, "the view from Broadmore Hill, South of Cheyenne School." Other views are from Austin Bluff and Stage Road. The natural beauty of Colorado Spring's is seen throughout these photos with images of trees, lakes, creeks, and the various mountain roads. Interspersed throughout the album are photos of various family members posing around homes along with children playing. There are also photos of the family farm including workers and farm animals and views of various crops. Additionally there are portrait style images of a young woman and her friend posing around the farm. Others show the elderly matriarch of the family and her husband with grandchildren and animals. One interesting group of photos shows a man and a woman outside using a tree stump as a table and furiously typing on typewriters in some sort of typing contest. The family continued to visit Colorado annually through 1933 often enjoying the Colorado Springs area. A group of photos towards the end of the album have been combined to create a panoramic photo of the mountain ranges with captions labeling each peak. Besides farm work members of the family were also involved in medical professions, (a professional portrait photo of a woman in a full nurse uniform is also seen here), and the military, a photo of two navy men is also present. An extensive account of a farm family in the 1920s and 30s and their trips to Colorado.

Velikiia plan: epos na sotsialisticheskoto stroitelstvo [Der grosse Plan. Epos des sozialistischen Aufbaus]. Transalted by L. O. Rizor

Sofia: "Raketa" ("Nova literatura"), 1933. Large octavo (24 × 16 cm). Original photo-montage wrappers by Aleksander Zhendov incorporating Max Keilson's design; [3], 4-99, [1] pp. About very good; upper spine extremity split; lightly dust-soiled. Bulgarian translation of Johannes Becher's incantatory poem about the first Soviet Five Years Plan, published in 1931 in Berlin. Front wrappers illustrated with a striking photo-montage design by Aleksandar Zhendov, based on Max Keilson's original wrappers for the German edition. Photo-montage covers are uncommonly encountered in Bulgarian avant-garde publishing and seem to have enjoyed a very short moment in the early 1930s: we know of only one other photo-design, by Max Metzger, from 1932. None are featured in Jacono 2013. Zhendov (1901-1953) was a painter, graphic designer and illustrator who was primarily known for his work in the sphere of political architecture. Broadly educated and communist in orientation, he was a typical representative of the avant-garde, having studied graphic design in Bulgaria, Russia and Germany. In 1931, he co-founded the Society of Independent Artists. He later also joined the Society of New Artists. An excerpt from Johannes Becher's poem had previously appeared in the leftist journal "Front na trudovo-borcheskite pisateli v Bulgariia" in 1932. This edition appears to have been printed by the same publishing house as "Front" and"Novis" and was likely printed in an edition of no more than 1000 copies and subject to similar repressive tactics as the other publications. Zhendov himself was repressed after 1944 and his work declared alien to the aims of a socialist society; he was unable to publish until his death in 1953. This title not in Jacono. Not in KVK, OCLC.
