         Kulturbolschewismus?

Eugen Rentsch Verlag, Erlenbach-Zürich, München, Leipzig 1932 - A furious denunciation of Nazi cultural policy, published in 1932, a year before the Nazis came to power. The title refers to a term thrown around by the Nazis and their sympathizers in the early 1930s, suggesting Modern art and architecture were non-Germanic and therefore Bolshevik. When the Nazis took over, the author, Paul Renner, lost his teaching job in Munich, and the books were removed from the market. Few survived; this one did. 8vo, 61, [3] pages in wrappers, entirely in German. Upper corners slightly creased, covers a bit rubbed, foxing to top edge. Otherwise, Fine. With a letter from the publisher laid in, and the original wraparound band attached to the covers. Ex-libris Ernst von Bergen, with his small label attached to inside front cover. OCLC WorldCat lists only a handful of institutions holding the original edition; other libraries carry a 2003 reprint. RARE. Paul Renner (1878-1956) was a German typeface designer who was perhaps best known as the designer of Futura, a type font still popular today. His book, which was issued by a Swiss publisher because German publishers wouldn't touch it, is set in Futura. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         Brave New World

London Chatto & Windus 1932 - 1st edition, 1st printing. 306pp. Octavo. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth with gold gilt lettering and decorations stamped to the spine. The top edge of text block stained blue. Slight bumping to corners. Some minor spots of foxing to the bottom edge. Illustrated dust jacket is price clipped and has some minor rubbing to the back panel, with minor professional restoration tidying up some closed tears. The jacket is in very good condition otherwise. Internally clean and an overall tight and bright copy. This is the first trade edition of Huxley's seminal piece of dystopic literature in the scarcely seen dust jacket. This novel takes place in an imagined dystopic state where the population is limited; natural reproduction and, as a result, the family, have been abolished; children are educated through hypnopaedic processes. Citizens have been conditioned to accept their stations in life through a process of breeding in castes, sensational entertainment, drugs, encouraged recreational sex and an abundance of material goods. There are areas of the world where "savage reservations" exist without such luxuries and family units and romantic relationships still exist. The majority of the story revolves around one such savage, John, as he is introduced to the New World and ultimately rejects the morally empty society. A beautiful copy of one of the greatest works of dystopic fiction and a deeply influential work that has been alluded to in numerous songs, movies, television shows and other books.          Mimeograph typescript, agreement between Katharine Hepburn and RKO Studios , Inc, signed ("Katharine Hepburn") and ("DO Selznick")

1932 - 25 pp., annotations throughout, including two loose pages regarding Hepburn's salary for "A Bill of Divorcement" with annotations in pencil, dated August 30, 1932, also signed by Hepburn and Selznick; together with a typescript copy bound in blue paper with annotations and two loose pages, both with secretarial signatures. First Contract and First Role on Screen. HEPBURN'S FIRST MOTION PICTURE CONTRACT: "? employ[ing] the Artist to render to the Corporation her exclusive services as an actress, performer or entertainer in connection with the production of a feature length motion picture.[with] a salary of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1,500.00) per week ?" with an option to employ Katharine Hepburn "? in connection with the production of two (2) additional feature length motion pictures ?" RKO had already cast John Barrymore as the father in "A Bill of Divorcement," but was having trouble casting the role of the daughter for its adaptation of the British stage play by Clemence Dane. Miss Hepburn's agent, Leland Hayward, persuaded director George Cukor to watch her test. Cukor and studio boss David O. Selznick were both impressed, and Hepburn won the role. In July of 1932, Miss Hepburn and her close friend Laura Harding took the train from New York to California, calling it their "Hollywood Adventure." Anne Edwards, in her biography Katherine Hepburn: A Remarkable Woman, writes of Miss Hepburn's arrival to the RKO lot: "Adela Rogers St. John recalled, 'As long as I live I will never forget the first day she appeared on the lot. Everybody was in the commissary at lunch when she walked in with Mr. Cukor. Several executives nearly fainted. Mr. Selznick swallowed a chicken wing whole. We beheld a tall, skinny girl entirely covered with freckles and wearing the most appalling and incredible clothes ?'"(pp. 85-86). As always, Miss Hepburn made an entrance with a lasting impression. "A Bill of Divorcement" was an auspicious debut for Hepburn; critics praised her performance, and a year later, in only her third film, she would win her first of a record four Academy Awards for actress in a leading role, in RKO's "Morning Glory" Provenance: Estate of Katharine Hepburn Front and back cover very worn, and detached from mimeograph copy, tears and wear on front and back cover on typescript copy 25 pp., annotations throughout, including two loose pages regarding Hepburn's salary for "A Bill of Divorcement" with annotations in pencil, dated August 30, 1932, also signed by Hepburn and Selznick; together with a typescript copy bound in blue paper with annotations and two loose pages, both with secretarial signatures [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Photographs of the Hostilities in Shanghai in 1932]

1932. 253 snapshots most held in place by photo corners, 22 black card leaves, 5 are loose. Some photographs and leaves are missing in the early section of the album though fortunately these seem likely to have held more personal images judging by those that immediately follow. The covers of the album missing. One photograph is torn in two but the others are all in good condition. A very interesting album which opens with photographs reflecting European life in China in the 1930s. Domestic scenes, snapshots taken at leisure - on board a yacht, hunting, at the races and while viewing the "Pagodas up Country' etc. Six photographs show the arrival of an aeroplane at the race course and an assembled crowd of people including uniformed servicemen to meet it. What makes this album unusual and particularly interesting are the 145 photographs which show hostilities in Shanghai in 1932. This second part of the album is serious in nature with many photographs of corpses, the bombing of Shanghai from a distance, close up images of devastation caused, fighting in the street, barricades, and other images grimly portrait the city grimly at war. Many of the images were taken within the Shanghai International settlement. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 159540).

         Black Mischief.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1932. FIRST EDITION, with proof state dust-jacket. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.303 [1]. In publisher's snakeskin-patterned red and black cloth with gilt titles to spine. With publisher's PROOF STATE cream dust-jacket, with a blank rear flap and no price marked to the front flap.Edges heavily spotted; slight reading lean. Spine lightly sunned. Jacket is slightly discoloured with some minor chips and closed tears to edges. Very good. Waugh's third novel is a controversial book which established him as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, 'Black Mischief' is a thinly veiled reference to the then empire of Abyssinia, now Ethiopia. The novel chronicles the efforts of the English-educated Emperor Seth, assisted by a fellow Oxford graduate (Waugh's recurring character) Basil Seal, to modernize his Empire.

         The Taxi-Dance Hall

University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1932 - First edition. Octavo. 300, [1]pp., three folding maps of Chicago bound in. Small stains near the spine, thus very good, in very good or better dustwrapper with a few small stains, mostly on the front panel. Sociological exploration of the taxi-dance hall in Chicago. The author's conclusion was that the hall, where young girls danced with gentlemen for payment (for the proverbial "dime-a-dance") was a school for sexual exploitation, but which might fulfill a positive place in society for lonely men if the halls were carefully monitored. Although the taxi-dance has become extinct, its cousin the lap dance is apparently still flourishing, albeit we are told, for somewhat more than a dime. [Attributes: First Edition]

         Brave New World.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1932. First edition of the Huxley's masterpiece. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In fine condition. A very nice presentation. "A nightmarish prognostication of a future in which humanity has been destroyed by science... easily Huxley's most popular (and many good judges continue to think his best) novel" (DNB). "After the success of his first three novels, Huxley abandoned the fictional milieu of literary London and directed his satire toward an imagined future. He admitted that the original idea of Brave New World was to challenge H.G. Wells' Utopian vision... The novel also marks Huxley's increasing disenchantment with the world, which was to result in his leaving England for California in 1937 in search of a more spiritual life. The book was immediately successful" (Parker & Kermode, 161-62). Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 Greatest Novels of the twentieth century.
