Mitteleuropa. Unter Mitwirkung der Deutschen Luft Hansa A.G. Mit einem Geleitwort von Erhard Milch, Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Luft Hansa A.G.

Leipzig, Bibliographisches Institut, 1931 - XII. 544 Seiten. 1 gefaltete Karte. Sprache: Deutsch, Gewicht in Gramm: 520. Original-Leinen, 13x21cm, Zustand: 3

George Gershwin; A Study in American Music.

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1931. Octavo (204 × 137 mm). Contemporary red morocco presentation binding, lettered Gershwin to spine and to front board within a single fillet panel, single gilt rule to turn-ins, red endpapers, top edge red, others uncut; original pictorial endpapers retained. Portrait frontispiece and 15 plates, caricature to half-title, musical notation to title page and text. Light restoration of scuff to front joint, but overall very good. First edition, first printing, signed by the dedicatee Ira Gershwin in pencil on the front free endpaper. This early biography of the great American composer is dedicated by the author to George's lyricist brother, Ira, "in many respects the family chronicler", who offered Goldberg his "untiring assistance" (Preface). Highly influential in the development of the popular song in the early part of the 20th century, the Gershwins contributed many of the most memorable tunes to the Great American Songbook, including "Lady Be Good", "The Man I Love", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". After George's untimely death in 1937, Ira went on to work with Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, and Harold Arlen. This copy in a stylish contemporary binding, almost certainly the work of impresario-designer Merle Armitage, whose presentation copy from George was bound almost identically. The first owner, whose small book-label is on the front free endpaper recto, was Olive Skogerson, a Swedish-American immigrant who worked her way up from stenographer to comptroller with the Fox Motion Picture Studio. In the year of publication the Gershwins scored the romantic comedy Delicious for Fox, although little of their work made the final cut.

THE WAVES with the ORIGINAL FIRST ISSUE DUSTJACKET

Hogarth Press, London, UK 1931 - FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING - States on Copyright Page: first published in 1931 - Considered by many to be her masterpiece, this novel contributed to the solid establishment of Woolf's reputation and her place as one of the "principal exponents of Modernism." - "The Waves" evidences Woolf's literary innovations, e.g. stream of consciousness and complex weaving of the characters' lives. This novel describes the lives of a group of friends, from childhood to later life. The speech pattern of the characters' utterances is undifferentiated and yet, "their individuality is presented through a highly patterned sequence of recurring phrases and images, and what we learn of their daily lives. we learn obliquely." The text is divided by sections of lyrical prose, depicting the rising and setting sun over the shoreline and the waves. This is the most profound and poetic of all her works. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket accompanies this book. Designed by the author's famous sister:Vanessa Bell. Price of 7/6 on the spine, and 7s. 6d. net to inner prelim. The dustjacket is housed in a removable plastic protective, archival sleeve. - When I purchased this book the dust jacket was chipped at the top and bottom of the spine and the tips of the folds so I have repaired these chips from another first edition original dust jacket so this dustjacket retains it's integrity. [the final image shows you the repairs before I put the dust jacket into it's removable protective sleeve]. The colour has darkened since it's 1931 publication and has a few small light soil marks. Purple cloth with gilt/gold lettering to the spine which is perfectly legible but the purple colour has faded unevenly on the spine and front and rear boards. Creasing to cloth top and bottom of spine also. Remains firmly bound to inner page block. Pages are foxed throughout, but apart from this, they are clean and tightly bound. - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest.          The Instinct Never Dies.

Ed. W. Bateman, n.p., 1931., 1931 First edition. Quarto, full limp cowhide. One of the finest and rarest of Texas imprints, and one that has been referred to as the 'black tulip' of western fine printing. Of legendary rarity and highlighted in Al Lowman's The Printing Arts in Texas, this copy is accompanied by a letter from the author to Dudley Dobie concerning the book's origins and the great expense required to print it. The book and letter were owned by W. Thomas Taylor, author of Texfake, a book which exposed the theft and forgery of early Texas documents in the 1970s, the publisher of Bookways, a quarterly devoted to book arts, and the designer/printer of over fifty books. Printed recto only, the book was written, designed and the type set by Ed W. Bateman, a one time newspaper reporter (hence the title) and a wildcatter of great success and failure. This book was created during one of his periods of great success. The text and illustrations are printed in two colors and the subject matter ranges from a father's implacable revenge for his son's death to a Mexican marijuana party visited in the company of a Texas Ranger. A fine copy in the publisher's slipcase (with moderate wear to slipcase). The letter to Dudley Dobie is extraordinary and has become rather famous in itself; on B Bar Cattle Company letterhead, dated April 13, 1941: 'I produced this book during the Bateman Age of Extravagance, when money (for which, apparently, I have a native-born contempt) was indeed plentiful. I spent so much on it, the very sum per copy would horrify an intelligent man --- not even a Morgan or a Rockefeller could or would pay what I paid.' The letter is trifolded; uniformly browned, with mild chipping at edges. One of the ultimate prizes of Texas fine printing. One of the essays in J. Frank Dobie's book, "Out of the Old Rock" (Little Brown, 1972) is about Bateman: "A wildcatter is a person who drills for oil in a place oil is not known to exist. Bankers consider his business about as safe as buying lottery tickets. In 1930, Ed Bateman, a Texas wildcatter, brought in the biggest discovery well in the history of the oil industry." Dobie refers to "The Instinct Never Dies" as follows: "Ed Bateman is a philosopher. There are many things in his philosophy that many oil men have never dreamed of. Sometimes the old urge to write seizes him. I have a rare little book that he not only wrote but designed and set with his own hands. One sketch in it is about a hermit philosopher-geologist who claimed to know the secret of finding 'enough petroleum to endow this planet for ages.'" (3214001). Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

George Gershwin; A Study in American Music.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1931 - Octavo (204 × 137 mm). Contemporary red morocco presentation binding, lettered Gershwin to spine and to front board within a single fillet panel, single gilt rule to turn-ins, red endpapers, top edge red, others uncut; original pictorial endpapers retained. Light restoration of scuff to front joint, but overall very good. Portrait frontispiece and 15 plates, caricature to half-title, musical notation to title page and text. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
