Cuban Cookery. Gastronomic Secrets of the Tropics, with an Appendix on Cuban Drinks

Havana, Cuba: Molina y Cia, 1931. Octavo, 158 pages. Illustrated with line drawings by Conrado Massaguer. Second edition of the first Cuban cookbook printed in English, and likely the first Cuban cocktail book printed in English. The first was published by Editorial Hermes, with 150 pages. Some institutional records indicate this Molina y Cia edition was published in 1946, but we can find nothing to date is more precisely than post 1931. De Baralt was the American wife of a Cuban doctor who moved to Havana around the turn of the century. She clearly felt at home there, as she refers to Cuban food as "our" cuisine throughout. She also exhibits a notable understanding of other world cuisines in her introduction, trying to locate Cuban cooking relative to others - favorably of course. The book contains an appendix of fifty-three cocktails and refrescos, including what was considered for a time the first printed recipe for a Cuban mojito, here called a Cuban Mojo. Then it was claimed the first appearance was in Sloppy Joe's Cocktail Manual, Season 1931-32, and it is true that that book appears to be the first to use the name Mojito, but the ingredients include lemon, not lime (perhaps intending "limon". It wasn't until 1935 (the manual was published annually) that Sloppy Joe's Cocktail Manual changes the recipe to now include "lime", and "shell of lime"). As of this writing, the earliest known appearance in print of the Mojito is in Juan Lasa's Libro de Cocktail (1929), where is appears as Mojo de Ron. ~ A few leaves dog-eared; some rubbing to text block edges. Rear hinge delicate. Rubbing and abrasions to the publisher's black cloth with a title label printed in red pasted to the front board; a bit of sun fading to the label. Good plus. Scarce. [OCLC locates seven copies; Noling Beverage Literature, page 50].

         STRAY SHOTS.

The Derrydale Press, New York - 1931, ii, 124pp, illustrated in dry point by the author. Very light wear, else VG+. Limited to 535 copies signed by the author at the frontispiece; additionally inscribed and signed by author, "To _____ ______, good hunting. Roland Clark." Preface: "Sundry friends suggested, a long time ago, that I write a book. They professed to find in my old shooting log the material necessary to so ambitious a venture, and volunteered their services in editing the same. The writing of a book, they assured me, was quite an easy matter. All that one required was some brains and a capacity for work. They intimated that it would be their part to supply the needed brains. How, I often wonder, should I have done without them! They have come around nights, smoked my tobacco, drunk the liquor prescribed to me by an over-worked yet kindly physician, and ravaged my old diary from cover to dusty cover. One after another, these flatterers have egged me on till out of the mists of old yesterdays, memories come a-flocking. But there are, I take it, hard and fast rules which govern the writer's art. Alas, I know nothing of them. I am piecing together the memory of old days; living them over again, and setting them down in black and white just as they really happened, and I shall wander far, no doubt, from the path of nice composition. Deal kindly with these little yarns and grant me a sportsman's indulgence for all that they may lack." [Attributes: Hard Cover]
