Photograph album of service in China with the US 15th Infantry Regiment, 1929-32.

China: 1929-32 - Landscape quarto (280 x 370 mm). Chinese commercial album of pale brown sheep, coloured images on covers (front showing the famous Nine Dragon Screen, Beihai Park, Beijing and lettered "1930 - 1932 Tientsin, China", back showing a full-length portrait of a Chinese warrior), cord ties through punched holes with white metal eyelets, coloured Chinese pin-ups on pastedowns. 104 pp. black heavy stock paper leaves (each with tissue guard), 655 corner-mounted original photographs (with red, black or marbled pink ornamental mounts) measuring between 45 x 65 mm and 215 x 280 mm, numerous postcards, photo postcards, postage stamps. Wonderfully engaging, wide-ranging and extensively-captioned visual record of China as seen through the eyes of a soldier in the US 15th Infantry Regiment ("The Old China Hands"), based in Tientsin (Tianjin) between 1929 and 1932, a period of bloody turbulence in China. This enthralling album encompasses many aspects of China, from the well-documented street life that always fascinated the visiting Westerner (peddlers, barbers, gamblers, shoemakers, the deformed bound "lotus feet" of Chinese women, decapitated heads of criminals hung from lamp posts) to personal photographs of ice skating on frozen canals, temples, funerals, graves, pagodas, statues of the Buddha, sampans and junks, the famous Marble Boat (also known as the Boat of Purity and Ease, a lakeside pavilion situated in the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing), and, naturally, the Great Wall. Towards the end of the album there is a fine series of some 100 candid smaller images (measuring 60 x 60 mm) taken in and around Beijing (clearly photographed in the winter as infantrymen are pictured wearing fur hats and greatcoats) showing the astrolabe at the Ancient Observatory (Guguanxiangtai), scenes in the complex of the Forbidden City and on the Sacred Road leading to the Ming Tombs (two figures are shown with cameras, one a fellow soldier and another bearing some resemblance to the celebrated Swedish Sinologist Sven Hedin). At this time Tientsin (Tianjin) was divided into "concession territories": through an agreement with the Qing dynasty, Japan, Britain, the US, and a number of European powers (France, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Italy, Austria-Hungary) administered different sections of the city. This process had begun in 1860 with concessions to Britain and France and led to the rapid development of Tientsin over the next half century. The US 15th Infantry were originally stationed in Tientsin (Tianjin) in 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, and served there until March 1938. This long service gave rise to their nickname of "The Old China Hands" and the adoption of the Chinese dragon on the unit insignia. During this period of ceaseless turmoil in China the regiment provided protection against marauding bandits and warlord armies vying for control; the Chinese Memorial Gate (pictured here and now at Fort Benning, Georgia) was presented to the regiment in 1925 by local villages, in gratitude for the vital security role played by the 15th in combatting the invading army of warlord Feng Yuxiang. During this period the north east of China was affected by the brief but bloody Sino-Soviet Conflict of July-September 1929 – for control of the strategically important Chinese Eastern Railway – and the Tientsin Incident of 1931, when the Kwantung Army of Japan, acting independently, invaded Manchuria and established the puppet state of Manchukuo. Four photographs entitled "The War of Tientsin in Pictures" shows barricaded and sandbagged streets in the city. There is also a sequence of twelve images of the "Shanghai War", showing both Japanese and Chinese soldiers (some manning the Great Wall): this relates to the Shanghai or January 28 Incident of 1932, instigated by the Japanese bombing of Shanghai and the subsequent armed conflict. The album opens with a fine formal photograph of G Company (under the command of Captain S. C. Robertson) and there are, scatte

Photograph album compiled by an African American railroad steward including one image of the aftermath of the Tulsa Race Riot

Kansas City, Tulsa, Buffalo, 1929. Album. Very good. This 11.5" x 7" album contains about 65 b/w photographs, most approximately 5" x 3.5" or 4.5" x 2". Some of the photos have been trimmed to shape. Seven or eight pieces of ephemera (greeting cards, business cards, medical treatment receipt, news clippings, etc.) Three sepia portrait photos, including one of Hardy, are laid-in. Overall, in very nice shape. Some photos have minor edge-wear or are cut to shape. Several have missing or creased corners, and a person has been excised from one group image. Minor wear to the album cover. Very nice grouping of photos showing young, well-to-do African-American men and women. One shows a Hardy carrying a large traveling bag; one shows destruction from the Tulsa Race Riot; two show men and women in graduation robes, and many are posed shots of family or friends with several taken at the "Scout" statue in Kansas City, Missouri. The ephemera includes several business cards from professionals of color (physician, dentist, chemistry professor), a treatment receipt from the University of Michigan Health Service, several greeting cards (one with a photo of Hardy's wife, Marie), and a later mid-1930s news clipping Miss Eva Bateman (Noles) had been accepted as the first African-American student to attend the E. J. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, 1940 census records show that the Hardys, both college graduates, lived in Buffalo, New York, and that Herbert was a railroad steward. Bateman-Noles went on to a distinguished nursing career and retired as the Director of Nursing at Buffalo's famed Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Peka? Jan Marhoul: román [The baker Jan Marhoul: a novel]

Prague: Odeon, 1929. Octavo (19.8 x 13.7 cm). Original decorative wrappers by Karel Teige; 134, [3] pp. This copy unnumbered, but signed and inscribed by the author and Toyen to Vit?zslav Nezval. Very good or better; with very faint soil to wrappers. Third edition (but first illustrated) of the acclaimed novel by Vancura (1891-1942), an early member of the Devetsil avant-garde group and co-formulator of the Poetism movement. This edition was the first to feature the illustrations by Czech surrealist artist Toyen (Marie Cermínová, 1902-1980). An important, outstanding association copy, warmly inscribed by Vancura and Toyen to Vítezslav Nezval (1900-1958) in the year of publication, "for his passionate praise." Nezval was another leading light of Czech poetism and, later, surrealism, and an early member of Devetsil famous both for his energy as an organizer of the avant-garde and for his prolific output of highly lyrical and associative verse. Cover featured in Vloemans 2012 (no. 164).

There are glimpses of the veteran USAT (US Army Transport) ships "Thomas" and "Grant" and scenes from the 15th's journey out to China – at San Francisco, Honolulu, Guam, and the US military airfield at Nichols Field in the Philippines. Another aspect of a soldier's life overseas is "hidden" beneath a colour illustration of Beijing's Nine Dragon Screen: the names of some 13 "floozies" with names such as "Rosie Hot Pants", "The Merry Widow" and "Cock Eye" and personal attributes ranging from "Dirty Neck" to "Good Looking". Soldiers from the other "concession territories" of Tientsin (Italy, France, and Britain) are also captured, along with some fine snapshots of American and Chinese soldiers fraternizing (these are dated 29 and 30 May 1929). Loosely inserted are two attractively-produced menu cards: for Christmas 1930 (with an original photo postcard of Company G on the cover) and Thanksgiving 1931 (Company F). The compiler of this album may have been Private Rudolph M. Bergner: there is a small pencil mark next to his name in the Christmas 1930 menu card and his name also appears in the Company F Thanksgiving menu. A fascinating archive of both original and commercial photographs that gives an engrossing view from the perspective of a serving soldier during a period of violent upheaval and historic change in modern China: a period that foreshadowed the gathering storm of the Second World War.

E.V.HOWELL PAINTED FIGURES: THE BUFFS REGIMENT

OWELL, Lieutenant E.V: Wooden painted soldiers by Lt E.V Howell circa 1929. Lieutenant Ernest Vernon Howell was born on 7th May 1891 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 8th September 1917. He was promoted Lieutenant on 4th March 1919 and discharged from the army on 16th June 1920. In May 1929 he wrote to the Curator of Lancaster Museum on hearing the news of the establishment of the King's Own Museum. He wrote "I am an invalided ex officer (retired) and have now taken up my former hobby of painting etc to support myself and family. I am specialising in sketches etc of past and present uniforms of the British Army." The figures, are approx 11 inches high and they originally cost 6 shillings and 6 pence each. Figures were also available at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 feet high. (25, 35, 50, 70 shillings and £5 5 shillings respectively). "The wooden figures in my opinion" he wrote "make the more interesting exhibits for museum purposes, the two foot and three foot sizes being most suitable. They are large enough to shew the small details which are often so important in uniforms" Lieutenant Howell had already provided figures to the Royal Scots Regiment, Royal Scots Fusiliers, The Rifle Brigade, The Worcester Regiment and The Border Regiment. These figures depict a private of The Buffs regiment for 1742, Grenadiers for 1751 and 1768, a private for 1792 and others for 1811and 1838. A private of The Light Company of 1854 and an sergeant for 1904 bring up the rear.
