SELF-PORTRAIT OF LYND WARD AUTHOR OF GOD'S MAN ." [caption title]

Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, New York 1929 - Original woodcut proof (15 x 10 cm plus large margins), with printed tissue overlay affixed by flap on verso. Fine, in publisher's envelope with return address. The upper panel of the envelope is darkened from proximity to something, not affecting the print. According to the publisher's caption, this is one of "100 proofs taken directly from Mr. Ward's wood block and sent to you with compliments of his publisher." It is signed below the image by Ward in pencil. While the edition is generous, the mode of this item's distribution, as a promotional item for Ward's first novel without words, resulted in a somewhat larger attrition rate than would normally be expected.

        6 pittori di Torino

Milano: Edizione Belvedere, , 1929. Brossura (wrappers). Ottimo (Fine). 25 tavole in bianco e nero. Ottimo (Fine). .

        7 FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN ..

New York: Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, [1929].. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] 9-310 [311-320: ads], eight inserted plates, original red cloth, front panel stamped in black and gold, spine panel stamped in black. Photoplay edition. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Merritt to pioneer fan publisher/printer Conrad Ruppert on the copyright page: "To Conrad Ruppert, / The pictures have / nothing to do with / the story but what / of it? / Sincerely / A. Merritt." Signed by Ruppert on the front free endpaper. Photoplay edition with eight stills from the 1929 film. "7 FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN was released as both a silent film and as a sound film with Vitaphone musical score, sound effects and some dialogue sequences. The film received generally negative reviews, including from such publications as THE NEW YORK TIMES, VARIETY -- which called it 'An utterly moronic sound film ... all hokum' -- and the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, in which Mildred Martin wrote 'after all the screams and creaks and thumps it reaches a somewhat tame conclusion ...' Despite this it performed well at the box office. A companion Photoplay edition of the Merritt novel, published by Grosset & Dunlap and featuring several stills from the film, also sold extremely well. The sound version [of the film] is presumed lost ... [and] the Vitaphone soundtrack for recording is also lost." - Wikipedia. A 2014 restored copy of the silent version is available on YouTube. A very good copy in good four-color pictorial dust jacket with wear, chipping and shallow creasing at edges and tears with tape mends. A nice association copy. This book is rarely found signed or inscribed by Merritt. (#41946)

The book appeared in several formats, the present example being the fullest and most limited version.

A very good set. 130 black and white heliogravures. First editions, limited issue. A complete set of the Surrealist-inflected, avant-garde Parisian art and literary journal, issued between 25 May 1929 and 10 June 1931. Each volume is numbered: the first four volumes were printed in an edition of 3,000 copies, volumes 5 to 7 one of 2,000 copies, and volume 8 was one of 1,700 copies. Established by Pierre Lévy, founder of Éditions du Carrefour, Bifur provided a forum for many of the Surrealists who had been alienated from Breton's group. In Breton's Second Surrealist Manifesto (1929) he waspishly described Bifur as a "remarkable repository for garbage". It features contributions in French from: Tristan Tzara, André Malraux, Jacques Prévert, Franz Kafka, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Langston Hughes, Maurice Tabard, André Kerstsz, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Claude Cahun, Giorgio De Chirico, Lilika Nacos, Francis Picabia, Martin-Luis Guzman, Rene Daumal, Ramon Gomez De La Serna, Jean Giono, William Carlos Williams, Michel Leiris, Pierre MacOrlan, Boris Pilniak, Jean Sylviere, Pierre Minet, Nathan Altman, Robert Desnos, Gabriel Bounoure, and Caradoc Evans. The reproductions in heliogravure include works by Andre Masson, De Chirico, De La Serna, Paul Klee, Man Ray, and Germaine Krull. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Andrew Marvell", original manuscript.

1929. 47 leaves, quarto (285 x 222 mm), complete, written on one side of the paper only in blue ink, with proposed footnotes in red. Original folding buff paper wrapper, holograph title on front. Housed in a modern folding case. Compositor's marks, dated at end "Finished June 7 in 1929". The manuscript evidently composed in a notebook and subsequently carefully disbound (traces of blue paper and glue to inner edges), a little marginal browning, condition excellent. The complete original holograph manuscript used as the printer's setting copy for Sackville-West's essay on Marvell, published that year as the first monograph in the projected Faber series, "The Poets on the Poets". (The next work in the series was T. S. Eliot on Dante, but there were only two more after that.) Sackville-West makes it clear on the first page that she intends to deal with only one aspect of the writer: "The subject of this essay is the Andrew Marvell who wrote poetry; the political and theological aspects of his life, and the expression which they found in his satires, his pamphlets, and his letters, will scarcely be touched upon at all. I offer no excuse for this omission. It is purely as a poet that I would consider him." Within these limits, the monograph, finished less than a year before she and Harold Nicolson purchased Sissinghurst Castle, exhibits a natural congruence between subject and essayist, between the author of "The Garden" and "Damon the Mower" and the writer, gardener, and author of "The Land". Aside from a few short stories to have come to light since and a few ephemeral pieces previously disposed of (mostly for charity), the great bulk of Vita Sackville-West's literary archive was offered for public sale at auction by Sotheby's, 10 July 2003. The archive, which had remained in the Nicolson family since its composition, was unsold at the auction but afterwards split into two groups and sold by private treaty. The manuscripts of her novels went to a private collector, the remainder to Yale. The present item remains the most substantial of her original manuscripts on the market.

The Road Followed by Alexander " - Three holograph, signed letters regarding the 1897-98 Malakand expedition on the northwest colonial Indian frontier that saw young Winston Churchill's first combat and first published book, two from the commanding General Sir Bindon Blood and one from Churchill's friend and longtime assistant Sir Edward "Eddie" Marsh

London 1929 - This collection of 1929 correspondence concerns the 1897-98 Malakand expedition on the northwest colonial Indian frontier that saw a young Winston Churchill’s first combat and was the subject of his first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force. The correspondence includes two holograph, signed letters from the expedition’s commander, General Sir Bindon Blood, and one holograph, signed letter from Churchill’s longtime assistant Eddie Marsh. The correspondence recipient, "Rev. E. J. F. Davies", apparently took a keen and possibly personal interest in the expedition’s history. The first letter from Blood is dated "12th May 1929" and fills both sides of a single sheet of "Cadogan Square" stationery, with the final lines and signed valedictory inked perpendicular to the rest of the text on the upper portion of the recto. Blood references a 10 May letter from Davies and provides three requested autographs, inked on a separate, accompanying sheet. Blood states: "No doubt you have seen Winston Churchill’s book on "The Malakand Field Force"? He gives you a good idea of the atmosphere and of the spirit of the soldiers – ‘Ever elegantly marching through the most pellucid air on the road followed by Alexander when he invaded India.’" The second letter from Blood is dated "25th May 1929" answering a 13 April letter from Davies which Blood had kept "until I could answer it properly". Quite lengthy, this 762-word letter fills 12 sides of stationery. Blood opens by more fully describing Churchill’s book, recommending the 1899 (Silver Library) edition and advising where it might be purchased. After telling Davies "I see you are a little mixed in your recollections of the Frontier operations of 1897-98", Blood fills 11 pages with his own detailed personal account, including further mention of Churchill. Davies clearly took Blood’s advice and sought the 1899 edition of Churchill’s book. The final holograph letter to Davies is from Churchill’s assistant Eddie Marsh. Inked on a single sheet of "Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, S.W." stationery dated "8.6.29" (Churchill was then serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer), the letter reads: "Mr. Churchill desires me to thank you for your letter & to say that his "Malakand Field Force" is in print in the Silver Library. Yours faithfully, E. Marsh". (It wasn’t, having been out of print since 1901.) A Victorian archetype, Sir Bindon Blood (1842-1940) joined the Royal Engineers after training at the East India Company’s military college and spent thirty-five years in India, except for short periods of active service in South Africa. Churchill befriended Bindon Blood in 1896 and "extracted from him a promise that if ever he commanded another expedition on the Indian frontier, he would allow Churchill to accompany him." (Churchill, Youth 1874-1900, p.346) True to his word, as commanding General of the Malakand Field Force expedition, Blood wrote to Churchill on 22 August 1897: "I should advise your coming to me as a press correspondent, and when you are here I shall put you on the strength on the 1st opportunity." Enabled by Blood, "on 16 September 1897, Churchill took part in his first real action as a combatant." (p.358) His newspaper despatches led to his first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898). Churchill dedicated the book to Blood and chose a photograph of Blood for the frontispiece. More than four decades later, Blood died on 16 May 1940, just six days after his one-time rashly ambitious subaltern became wartime Prime Minister. In 1905, when Churchill chose Sir Edward Howard "Eddie" Marsh (1872-1953) as his Private Secretary, Marsh was "an obscure clerk in the West African Department" and Churchill the newly appointed Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. This appointment became the basis of a lifelong friendship. Marsh "remained at his side in every Cabinet post he held for the next twenty-five years." (Gilbert, VIII, p.794)

Brown (presentation inscription, signature on front free endpaper, dated 1929 at foot); Louis Daniel Brodsky, American poet and Faulkner scholar (then deaccessioned from the Brodsky-Faulkner collection at Southeast Missouri State University); Roger Rechler (his sale, Christie's New York, 11 October 2002, lot 77). Brown, Faulkner's romance language professor at "Ole Miss" in the late teens. According to Frederick Karl, Brown was perhaps the most distinguished faculty member at the university, a Renaissance man who taught languages, archaeology, and geology, and collected pestles, mortars, and sleigh bells. He awarded Faulkner with a prize for a poem at the end of school (See Karl, William Faulkner, 1989, pp. 140, 153). Presentation copies of Sartoris are extremely rare.

A Shropshire Lad and Last Poems.

Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire: printed at The Alcuin Press, published by The Richards Press Limited, London,, 1929. Two volumes in one, octavo. Publisher's deluxe brown morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands and titles direct, top edge gilt. Extremities a little scuffed, some light spotting to edge, but sound and internally clean, a very good copy indeed. First Alcuin Press edition, number 315 of 325 sets of which this example is bound together in the rare publisher's deluxe single volume binding. The Alcuin Press edition was the first to offer, together as a single published item though in two volumes, what were then the complete published works of poet (More Poems being published only after his death in 1936). Almost all the sets were issued in two cloth-backed volumes, and H.P.R. Finberg's request to issue a deluxe version in a single leather-bound volume was refused by Housman, who wrote to him on 1 February 1929 to declare that: "unless I change my mind, A Shropshire Lad and Last Poems will not be published in one volume during my lifetime." Nonetheless Finberg persevered in secret, and according to Naiditch at least four copies were thus bound. This copy has a presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, "Laurence Gallichan, 1929, H.P.", most likely by Finberg himself.

        Stagione 1929-1930

Torino: s.e., , 1929-1930. Rilegato mezza pelle (half-leather binding). Ottimo (Fine).

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Sartoris.

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1929 - Octavo. Original black cloth. With the Arthur Hawkins dust jacket. In a quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Edith M. Cloth a little rubbed, front hinge weak. An excellent copy n the dust jacket with a few minor nicks. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his close childhood friend on the front free endpaper: "To my good friend, Edith, from Bill," and signed by Edith M. Brown beneath the inscription; additionally signed by Faulkner on the title, "William Faulkner 28 May 1929." Brown was one of three children of Calvin S. Massey 289; Peterson A5.1.         Andrew Marvell", original manuscript.

1929 1929 - 47 leaves, quarto (285 x 222 mm), complete, written on one side of the paper only in blue ink, with proposed footnotes in red. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Shtern afn dakh (Lid un Balade) [= Stars on the Roof] Stern oyf'n Dach

Verlag Shalom Aleichem Farlag Sholem Alykhem, Paris Str. 7, Bucharest, Romnia 1929 - [6], 180 pages. 20 x 13 cm. Itzik Manger (30 May 1901, Czernowitz, then Austrian-Hungarian Empire, later Romania and now in the Ukraine - 21 February 1969, Gedera, Israel) was a prominent Yiddish poet and playwright. His father, Hillel Manger, was a skilled tailor in love with literature, which he referred to as 'literatoyreh' (a portmanteau of the Yiddish words literatura and Toyreh). Manger attended the Kaiser Königlicher Dritter Staats-Gymnasium, where he studied German literature until he was expelled for pranks and bad behavior. Thereafter his education was at the Yiddish theatre¿s backstage. In 1921, Manger began publishing his early poems and ballads in several new literary journals founded in the aftermath of World War I. Soon afterwards, he settled in Bucharest and wrote for the local Yiddish newspapers while giving occasional lectures on Spanish, Romanian, and Gypsy folklore. In 1927, Manger came to Warsaw, the spiritual and intellectual center of Ashkenazi Jewry and remained there for the next decade, which became the most productive years of his entire career. In 1929, Manger published his first book of poetry, Shtern afn dakh (Stars on the Roof) to critical acclaim. He became famous. Between 1929 and 1938 h gave frequent readings of his own poetry at the Writers' Club, was interviewed by all the major Warsaw Yiddish papers, published articles in the prestigious journal Literarishe Bleter (Literary Pages), issued his own literary journal called Chosen Words filled with his poetry, fiction, and artistic manifestos. At the same time, Manger continued to publish his own works, including a series of modernist poems inspired by the Oral Torah, a series of fictional vignettes on the history of Yiddish literature and three more volumes of poetry. His works secured Manger his international reputation. With widespread anti-Semitism in the highest levels of Polish government and society, Jewish life in Warsaw became increasingly dire, so Manger left for Paris in 1938. But Paris was not safe for long. In 1940 he fled to Marseilles, Tunis, Liverpool, and finally London, where he became a British citizen and remained, unhappily, for 11 eleven years. Disillusioned and unproductive, Manger immigrated to Israel in 1958, where he remained until his death. In Israel he achieved success. In 1965, Dov Seltzer directed a highly popular production of Manger's Songs of the Megillah which set a record in Israeli theatre with 400+ performances. When he died in 1969, Manger was mourned as an Israeli national poet. Romanian Jewish playwright Israil Bercovici adapted a collection of Manger's poems into a two-act stage piece, Mangheriada, which premiered 6 April 1968 at the Romanian State Jewish Theater in Bucharest. Manger's poem "Oyfn veg shteyt a boym" has been set to music and has entered the repertoire of Yiddish song. . . [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BENDIGO'S SERMON. And How He Taught the Six Fighting Men of Birmingham a Good Lesson

1929. Nottingham: Ishmael Wilson & Son, 1929. Original light blue wrappers pictorially stamped in black. First (and only) Separate Edition. This is an original poem by Conan Doyle, about a renowned prizefighter from Nottingham named William Thompson (1811-1880 -- alias "Bendigo") -- who after his boxing career turned to religion, and itinerant preaching. Doyle was a big fan of prizefighting -- as exemplified by his 1896 novel RODNEY STONE and his short story "The Croxley Master" (in THE GREEN FLAG, 1900). The poem "Bendy's Sermon" had appeared in Doyle's 1911 volume of verse SONGS OF THE ROAD; its first separate appearance is this four-page booklet, illustrated with photographs of (unrelated) boxing matches -- published "by kind permission of the Author" by a local newsagent in Bendigo's home-town of Nottingham.~It is in very good-plus condition, with a few short edge-tears and one small chip out of the spine -- which for this piece is a rather remarkable condition, as this is a very cheap production: the actual four-page text is on extremely brittle paper which browns and cracks readily. (G&G notes that Wilson's publications, such as this, were printed on a small "Cropper" machine, two pages at a time.) Green & Gibson A34c. Housed in a suede-lined clamshell case with leather label.~Also included is 6" x 4-1/2" promotional card printed by the same Ishmael Wilson of Nottingham, with a drawing of "'Bendigo' in 1839" on one side ("one of the most Scientific Boxers who ever lived"), and with ads for Nottingham merchants on the reverse side. The card bears the date "Registered Dec. 1887", which probably refers to the date Wilson registered the drawing; Wilson started as a newsagent in 1874 (at age 16!), and died in 1934.

UNTITLED ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH [FEMALE NUDE ILLUMINATED]

Ad. Braun & Co., [Paris 1929 - Untitled lithograph. Image size 10 3/8 x 6 5/8" (26.7 x 17 cm), with full margins. Fine, in lightly smudged archival matting. One of an edition of 250 impressions printed on Montval, signed in pencil in the lower right margin. Lovet-Lorski (Lithuanian/American 1894-1973), was a major contributor to the American Art Deco style of the 1920's. Although best known as a sculptor, in 1929 Braun & Co. published two portfolios of his lithographs, of which this lithograph was a component. The image is of a female nude figure exalted, bathed in a shaft of light from the upper right corner to the lower left. Late in life, after arthritis hampered his ability to sculpt, Lovet-Lorski returned to drawing and print-making. His work is held in the collections of the Luxembourg Museum, Paris; Petit Palais, Paris; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; San Diego Fine Arts Society; Los Angeles Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum; San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; Boston University; and Columbia University.

THE MARACOT DEEP and Other Stories

1929. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1929. Original black cloth decorated in yellow, with dust jacket. First American Edition of the last volume of fiction to be published during Doyle's lifetime. The title tale is Doyle's great science fiction adventure in which Professor Maracot leads an expedition to the floor of the Atlantic Ocean and encounters an ancient submarine civilization -- illustrating Doyle's long-time interest in the Atlantis legend. Two of the other three tales are Professor Challenger science fiction stories -- "The Disintegration Machine" and "When the World Screamed." The other one, "The Story of Spedegue's Dropper," is a World War I tale in which a cricket bowler's lob technique is adapted for hurling grenades in trench warfare.~The very uncommon dust jacket is a color pictorial one, designed by Fay Turpin, showing a battle between man and shark in front of undersea buildings. The volume is in fine condition; the jacket is near-fine, with the red spine lettering a little faded, and a few tiny tears (but nothing is lacking). Green & Gibson A47c. Housed in a felt-lined morocco-backed clamshell case.

"Documents was a Surrealist art magazine edited by Georges Bataille. Published in Paris between April 1929 and January 1931, it ran for 15 issues, each of which contained a wide range of original writing and photographs. It was overseen by the writer-philosopher Georges Bataille, who became more and more its single guiding figure as the issues progressed. Primarily through the pages of this journal, Bataille forcefully challenged the tenets of Surrealism espoused by André Breton in favor of an alternate model, in which humanity could embrace the formless, the sordid, the discarded and disregarded."         Our Exagmination Round His Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress. With Letters of Protest by G. V. L. Slingsby and Vladimir Dixon.

Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1929 - Octavo. Original white wrappers printed in black. Housed in a quarter calf solander box. A superb copy. First edition, first impression, large paper issue. This is copy 45 of 96 numbered copies printed on Verge d'Arches. This early critique of Joyce's final work was published some 10 years prior to the publication of the finished novel. Part of the incentive to publish was apparently to raise funds for the perennially impecunious Joyce. A myth surrounding this work is that one or both of the two letters of protest were written by Joyce himself. However both authors existed - indeed Beach herself commissioned Slingsby. Dixon's effort - which is marvellous - was an unsolicited one by a Russian émigré who was to die in Paris in 1929, just as the book was published. Slocum & Cahoon B10. [Attributes: First Edition]
