         White Buildings

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1926. 1st edition. The title page is a cancel, with Allen Tate's name (who wrote the Foreword) spelled correctly. One of Crane's own copies of his first book (the only one that's ever surfaced, and the only one that's likely to) with his bookplate and his ownership signature (in ink) "Hart Crane, Aug '31" (he drowned in 1932). This copy should not be confused with 1st editions that just have his bookplate for evidence of ownership, as his family (with all the integrity of hyenas) sold bookplates after his death. Fine in a beautiful dustjacket with the spine faded half a shade else fine condition, quality that parts the clouds to let the Sun shine down, and quite a rare jacket in such condition. Since the title page was canceled immediately, Crane logically opted for author's copies with his friend Tate's name spelled properly. Heavy. Singular. Best copy in the world, so far. Fine / near fine.

Titel und Initialen für die Bremer Presse

Bremer Presse: (Munich), 1926. Simons, Anna. Folio. (16)ff. Designer William Addison Dwiggins' copy, with the notation inside the portfolio case: "Presented by the publishers to WAD, and given by him to Edward A. Karr." A collection of titles and initials designed by Anna Simons for the Bremer Presse. Along with Graily Hewitt, Eric Gill, and Percy Smith, Simons was one of Edward Johnston's star pupils at the Royal College of Art in London. It was after studying with Johnston, and translating his Writing and Lettering, & Illuminating into German, that Simons went home to Germany in 1918 to work at the Bremer Presse. During her time there, she would design many titles and initial sets for the Presse, and in 1926, this portfolio was issued to showcase her work. Each sheet in the portfolio is headed by one of Simons' Bremer Presse title designs, including her titles for the Divine Comedy, Fichte's Reden an Die Seutsche Nation, Chansons d'Amour, Albii Tabulli Elegiae, and others. The titles are followed by the initials she cut for the work. Housed in a paper-covered portfolio backed in linen, with a paper label to the cover and three cloth tie straps. Portfolio sunned, with corners bumped, small tears to top and bottom of spine, and top and bottom ties partially torn away. Sheets with scattered foxing particularly at edges, else about fine.          Up Hill and down Dale in Grenada. With a Foreword by the Hon'ble Gerald Smith, Colonial Treasurer, British Honduras

1926 - First edition. Double page colour map. 8vo. Orignal cloth-backed printed paper boards, a little faded, errata slip tipped in. [v], ii, 93pp. St. George's, Grenada Guardian, A lovely copy of this scarce Trinidad imrpint, the double page map was also printed on the island. After a distinguished war service, Devas settled in Grenanda in 1922 and remained in the West Indies for the rest of his life. He wrote a number of books on the Caribbean, this being the first. In the foreword, the book is summarised as a ?description of the chief scenic and other attractions of the island.? However it is more much interesting and considered than that. The opening chapter includes a discussion of three different maps of the island and their relation to the one produced here (originally produced under the direction of Alexander Gross and first printed ?on a single sheet of the Victory Series by ?Geographia? Ltd, London?). He then proceeds to correct some of the small inaccuracies of it from first-hand information. Following the general format of an itinerary, Devas provides detailed descriptions of the Grand Etang, Mt Qua Qua, Concord Falls and the Blue Basin, Mt St Catherine, Victoria and Hapsack and St Patrick's, Lake Antoine and ?Fedon's Camp? and Carriacou. Devas also discusses some of Grenada's natural history, with lengthy notes on the iguana and some of the native birds. Inthis engaging account, he combines historical and topographical information and occasionally interleaves this with some of his own experiences. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         White Buildings

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1926. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, corrected state with the corrected title page spelling "Allen," rather than "Allan" tipped in. Foreword by Allen Tate. The entire first printing consisted of 500 copies, 50 of which were sent out to reviewers before the mistake was caught. The title page was quickly reset and the revised pages tipped in by hand in the 450 remaining copies. Faint bend in the text block, edgewear on the fragile boards, very good in very good or a little better dustwrapper with one fold strengthened on the verso. Housed in a cloth chemise and quarter morocco slipcase titled in gilt. Inscribed by Hart Crane: "For John Wolcott In Memoriam the Cleveland days 'Where cuckoos clucked to finches' Hart Crane."The line "Where cuckoos clucked to finches" appears in the penultimate stanza of the second part (of three) in Crane's poem For The Marriage of Faustus and Helen, considered by critics to be one of his greatest poems and which appears on pages 37-44 of this volume of poetry. The line apparently suggests the animated conversations taking place at a frenzied jazz club. Crane grew up in Cleveland, Ohio in the north tower of his family's large home at 1709 East 115th Street, his "sanctum de la tour." Wolcott was almost certainly one of the young friends who Crane left behind when, at the age of 17, he abandoned Cleveland for New York. A significant copy of the first book (of only two before his suicide at the age of 32) of one of the preeminent and influential modernist poets.

R.U.R., Rossumaj Universalaj Robotoj: kolektiva dramo je enkoduka komedio kaj 3 aktoj [R.U.R. Rossum's Universal Robots: a collective play in three acts and a prologue]

Moraviaj Esperanto Pioniroj, Olomouc 1926 - Octavo (21 × 14.8 cm). Original pictorial wrappers with a linocut print; 108, [3] pp. A very good copy. First edition in Esperanto of Karel Capek's groundbreaking science fiction play, which is famous for introducing the coinage 'robot', based on the Czech word robota, for 'hard labor' or 'slavery.' "Capek's invention of the contemporary idea of the robot was a direct response to the radical cultural and economic transformations produced by increasing industrialisation. Rather than the spectacle of mechanical life made by man, as seen on the eighteenth-century stage, R.U.R. reflected the glowing fears that man himself had become machine" (Elizabeth Stephens, "We Have Always Been Robots," in Robots and Art, ed. D. Herath, et al., p. 34). A great success in the Czech Republic, the play was translated and performed throughout the world almost immediately. With an attractive linocut cover design by an unattributed artist. Karel's brother and close collaborator, Josef Capek, created numerous cover designs for the play's early editions; this one was clearly inspired by his style, but does not appear to be his work (not in Pomajzlová, Videt knihu: knizní grafika Josefa Capka, 2010). Though not credited, the translator likely was Otto F. Babler, a prolific Moravian translator and publisher. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         Tam-tam: hudební leták; gazette musicale [Tam-tam: a musical bulletin], nos. 3, 4, 5, 6 (of six published)

self-published, Prague 1926 - Octavos (20 × 14 cm). Original staple-stitched typo- illustrated self-wrappers (most likely by Karel Teige); 32 pp. each. Illustrations and typo-design throughout. Very light wear to spine folds; still very good, with the last three issues uncut and unopened. A substantial run of this short-lived avant-garde journal, one of the only Czech periodicals clearly influenced by Dada. Published by Ctibor Blatný, E. F. Burian, Jindrich Hýbler and Jirí Maránek, it contains musical "sketches" and compositions, cryptic anecdotes, ramblings, and theoretical articles, including a translation of S. A. Boguslavsky's essay on Moscow composers and a piece titled "Polydynamics" by E. F. Burian. Tam-tam also features reproductions of work by ?tyrský, Toyen, ?íma, Obrtel, and Rodchenko. While it does not use the term "Dada" itself, Jind ich Toman has suggested that the journal's name, which translates to "there-there" (in German: da-da), points to its aesthetic orientation. More importantly, Toman notes the aggressive, iconoclastic tone of the contributions, its faible for fragmentary and illogical proclamations, and a general tendency toward a "beautiful ugliness" (see his essay "Te to vidí?, te u? ne," 2007). The four issues also feature some of the most striking typographic compositions of the Czech avant-garde. Although he is not credited explicitly, they are most likely the work of Karel Teige. Typographic manicules, which Teige used during this period, are also a frequent device in Kurt Schwitters' design for Merz, the Hannover Dada periodical, to which Teige's compositions bear a certain resemblance. Another telling detail are the vertically crossed lines, found on the rear wrappers of one of the issues. Not in Vloemans. Rare, with no copies found in KVK, OCLC. According to its online catalog, the Czech National Library at some time deaccessioned its only copy of a single issue (no. 2). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Savonarola. A Dramatic Poem

London: R. Cobden-Sanderson, 1926. First edition, 300 copies printed. xv, [1], 99 pp. 8vo. Original black cloth with white paper spine label, gray dust jacket printed in black. A few chips and minor toning to jacket. First edition, 300 copies printed. xv, [1], 99 pp. 8vo. Dedication copy. Dedication copy, inscribed by the author, the mother of T.S. Eliot, to Eliot's sister: "Marian C. Eliot / With dear love / from / Mother." The book is dedicated: "To My Children." T.S. Eliot wrote the introduction to the book and helped arrange for its publication. An educator, social reformer, and a published writer of essays and poems, Charlotte Champe Stearns Eliot (1843-1929) never achieved her literary ambitions, but encouraged Eliot in his own. She wrote to Eliot while he was still at Harvard: "I hope in your literary work you will receive early the recognition I strove for and failed. I should so have loved a college course, but was obliged to teach before I was nineteen ... 'a young lady of unusual brilliancy as a scholar' my old yellow testimonial says, but when I was set to teaching young children, my Trigonometry and Astronomy counted for naught, and I made a dead failure" (Letters Vol I, 2011, p. 11).
