His Small Contribution to Dream Theory is a collection of short articles published by Freud between the years of 1913 and 1923, which includes Fairy Tale Material of Dreams, A Dream as Means of Proof, Dream and Telepathy, Notes Upon the Theory and Practice of Dream Interpretation, The Limits of Dream Interpretation, The Ethical Responsibility for the Contents of Dreams, and The Occult Significance of Dreams.

Mathematical Investigations in the Theory of Value and Prices.

New Haven: Yale University Press,, 1925. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt. 2 photographic frontispieces and numerous diagrams to the text. Spine faded, ends and corners bruised, light toning to margins, otherwise a bright copy. Royal Statistical Society stamps to front free endpaper and title page, dated 10 February 1926. First edition in book form, first impression, publisher's presentation copy, of the "startlingly original PhD thesis" (Blaug) which expounds the monetary theories for which Fisher became famous and established his international reputation. This is a photo-engraved reprint of Fisher's doctoral work, first published in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1892. "Fisher's aim in his Mathematical Investigations was to present a general mathematical model of the determination of value and prices. He claimed to have specified the equations of general economic equilibrium for the case of independent goods (chapter 4, sec. 10), although the only mathematical economist whose work he had consulted was Jevons. With commendable honesty he recognizes the priority of Walras's Eléments d'économie politique pure (1874) as far as the equations of the general equilibrium are concerned and likewise the priority of Edgeworth's Mathematical Psychics (1881) as regards the concept of utility surfaces. It appears that, although only a student, Fisher had independently developed a theory of general economic equilibrium that was identical to part of Walras's and included the concept of the indifference surface, one of the fundamental bases of modern economic theory" (IESS V, pp. 476-7). This copy is inscribed, "From the Publishers (Humphrey Milford) Price 4/6 net" on the front free endpaper. Milford (1877–1952) was the head of the London office of Oxford University Press and his name "became a familiar mark on Oxford books, distinguishing London volumes from the Clarendon Press imprint that appeared on works which the delegates supervised at Oxford" (ODNB). As such, his name appears on the title page of this copy.

         OLD MAN WITH PIPE

1925 - Unique oil pigment print photograph, image size 8 x 6 in. [20.3 x 15.2 cm.] tipped to art paper 11 x 14 inches. Presented in a 16 x 20 inch archival window-mat. Slight chipping at the bottom blank corners of the photographic stock with no loss of the image; else fine condition. Doris Ulmann (1882-1934), although prolific, the majority of her photographs are unique prints and of these, most are left unsigned. From 1917 through 1925, Doris Ulmann created approximately 150 oil pigment prints. Given the extreme difficulty in obtaining success with this process, the prints are unique monotypes. The subtle details visible in the shadows of this print exhibit a technical mastery of both the exposure and of the pigment process. For a detailed description of Ulmann's oil print process and method of presentation, see p. 276 -77 of Philip Walker Jacobs' excellent THE LIFE AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF DORIS ULMANN.          The Life of Sir William Osler. [2 volumes].

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1925. Oxford:: Clarendon Press, 1925., 1925. Two volumes. Thick 8vo. xiii, [3], 686; x, [2], 728 pp. Frontis. portraits, 42 illustrations, indices. Navy blue gilt-stamped cloth; rubbed. Both volumes with ownership signature of D. C. Hoffman, 1926. Ink inscription, "Very truly yours Harvey Cushing." INSCRIBED BY HARVEY CUSHING. Additional ink ownership signature of Mark B. Adams, October, 1973. First edition, second impression. THIS IS A RARE COPY OF THE HIGHLY RESPECTED AND AWARDED BIOGRAPHY OF SIR WILLIAM OSLER WITH THE ORIGINAL INSCRIPTION AND SIGNATURE OF HARVEY CUSHING. Harvey Cushing is often referred to as the father of neurosurgery. "Through his work on the pituitary gland, Cushing was also one of the founders of endocrinology. A well-read man who wrote a phenomenal amount throughout his long career (winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1926 for his hagiography of Sir William Osler), Cushing was also a noted bibliophile, a decent amateur medical historian, and a war hero" (Clarkfield, 2006, NEJM, Vol. 354, p. 534). His greatest contribution to medicine, however, may be his introduction of the Riva-Rocci sphygmomanometer to the United States, and his introduction of blood pressure as a vital sign. His interest in William Osler was personal. In World War I he treated Osler's son, Edward, who did not survive the war. PROVENANCE: Donald C. Hoffman, M.D., was with the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, and Assistant in Medicine, Boston City Hospital. He wrote (or co-wrote) various research papers including, "The Electric Charge of Mosaic Virus Particles" (1930), "The Influence of Testicle Extract on the Intradermal Spread of Injected Fluids and Particles" (1930), "Properties of the Causative Agent of a Chicken Tumor," (1932). Mark B. Adams (1947-2007) "A graduate of Reed College and the University of Oregon Medical School, Dr. Adams interned at the Medical College of Wisconsin in General Surgery and earned a Master's degree in Microbiology from that institution during his surgical residency. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Department of Surgery after joining the division of Transplantation in 1978, reaching full professor in 1989 and subsequently Acting Chair, Vice Chair and Chair. He held a variety of committee positions within UNOS and the ASTS, including chair of the ASTS Ethics committee" (Johnson, 2007, "In Memoriam Mark B. Adams M.D. M.S. F.A.C.S.", American Journal of Transplantation, Vol. 7, p. 2246).

         Le crépuscule des dieux.

Paris, le livre contemporain 1925 - Eaux-fortes en couleurs de Richard Ranft. With 31 full-page and 31 smaller original color etchings. 259 pp., 1 leaf. Large 4to. Maroon morocco, both covers richly gilt in a classicist style, edges gilt, orig. illus. wrappers bound in, sign. by (Charles) Weckesser in gilt on the front-turn in. In matching slipcase. Paris, le livre contemporain, 1925. No. 50 "ad personam" of 119 numbered copies. The etchings were printed by Porcabeuf, the text by the Imprimerie Nationale, Paul Gallimard and Pierre Dauze were responsible for the production. The novel by E. Bourges (1852-1925) is an early document of the Wagner cult not only for its subject matter; even the composition follows Wagner's style, using the technique of the "leitmotiv". It was first published in 1884, and was hailed as a masterpiece; Cocteau still called it an "oeuvre magnifique" in 1923. The Swiss artist Richard Ranft (1862-1931), who illustrated the novel first, catches the "décadence" perfectly. - Fine copy, bound by the famous Belgian bookbinder Weckesser. - Monod 1779; Vollmer IV, 17. MODERN ILLUSTRATED BOOKS (1900-1999) ; [Attributes: Soft Cover]
