Musiciens d'Autrefois [Musicians of the Past] - INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY TO GUIDO ADLER

Paris: Libraire Hachette, 1924. Ninth Edition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 8vo. 306 pp. Inscribed in ink on the half title "A Mr. le Prof. D. Guido Adler / en confraternel hommage / et cordial souvenir / Romain Rolland / Villeneuve, 8 Nov.bre 1926." Original wrappers bound in to half green cloth, pale green boards somewhat stained and sunned, a couple small tears to page margins, wrapper and half title stained and reinforced with paper along the gutter, several library stamps and stickers (see description below) otherwise in very good condition.

An important association copy of this collection of articles and essays on music, inscribed by the author to the father of modern musicology, Guido Adler. This volume confiscated by the Nazis and recently restored to his heirs from the library of the University of Vienna.

Rolland was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915 "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings."

Guido Adler is regarded as the father of modern musicology. He was the founder of the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar of the University of Vienna, regarded as the prototype of musical research centres worldwide. He was a friend of many composers, including Brahms, Bruckner, Bartók and Mahler, who presented him with the autograph manuscript of the song "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen". After the Anschluss and during the last illness of the musicologist, the great library which he formed became a bargaining chip for the survival of Adler and his daughter Melanie. She imagined that they might be able to leave Vienna if the collection were given or sold to a library. The bargaining failed. Adler died, the library and his manuscripts were confiscated and Melanie transported and shot in 1942. This and the other books were catalogued by the library later in that year. Some parts of the library were found after the war and restored to the family and are now in the University of Georgia. The present volume was more recently discovered in the Music Library of the University of Vienna, marked with the stamp and inventory number of the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, having been stolen by the organisation Adler had founded.

        Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1924. A Near Fine Copy Of The First American Trade Edition [Nielsen, Kay, illustrator]. Andersen, Hans Christian. Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen. Illustrated by Kay Nielsen. New York: George H. Doran Comapny, [1924]. First American trade edition. Quarto (11 1/8 x 8 9/16 in; 282 x 217 mm.). 280, [1], [3, blank] pp. Twelve mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards and numerous black and white text illustrations (seventeen full-page) and decorative borders and initials. Publisher's black cloth over boards, front cover with pictorial label printed in silver, orange and black, spine pictorially decorated in silver, pictorial endpapers printed in gray. Minimal rubbing to silver decoration on spine otherwise a bright and near fine copy. "In an attempt to reinvigorate the market for gift books after the war, Hodder & Stoughton resumed the publishing of Kay Nielsen's books, though on a more modest scale. In 1924 they published a work that Nielsen had begun in 1912, Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, including sixteen stories illustrated with twelve watercolors. Nielsen returned to London, and in 1925 his final book for Hodder & Stoughton, Hansel and Gretel, appeared with twelve color plates" (Susan E. Meyer, A Treasury of the Great Children's Book Illustrators, p. 206). Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen's designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring...Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen's objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story's emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).

        OBSERVATIONS

The Dial Press, New York 1924 - Black cloth and boards, printed paper spine label. Offsetting from a now absent clipping between two pages, a few small rubs to boards, otherwise about fine in the very uncommon foil finish dust jacket, which shows careful restorations at crown and toe of spine, along the front flap fold, and to three creased tears in the lower panel. First edition of Moore's first clothbound book, incorporating the text of her preceding two pamphlets in company with new work and work not hitherto collected. This volume was the recipient of the Dial Award for 1924, an honor accorded only one other poet to that point: T.S. Eliot for THE WASTE LAND. Although the size of the edition is not recorded by the bibliographer, it was no doubt small: the first printing is uncommon in commerce (notably so in dust jacket), and a corrected second printing was required and issued three months after the first. THE WASTE LAND's edition of one thousand copies was exhausted and a second printing appeared in a similar time frame; however, THE WASTE LAND is a common book, and OBSERVATIONS is not. Most likely the first printing did not exceed one thousand copies, and may very well have been smaller. ABBOTT A3.1.

T'erorizmi da k'omunizmi [Terrorism and Communism]

      S. S. S. R. Sakhelmts'ipo Gamomtsemloba, Tbilisi 1924 - Octavo (22.8 × 15 cm). Original printed wrappers; 193, [1] pp. About very good, partially uncut and unopened; small owner inscription to front wrapper and light wear to spine. First Georgian edition of Trotsky's defense of violent revolution, initially published in German in 1920. Trotsky's book is a response to Karl Kautsky's pamphlet "Die Diktatur des Proletariats" (Vienna, 1918), which criticizes the Bolshevik overthrow of the beginnings of parliamentary democracy in Russia after the October Revolution. Lenin was the first to rebut Kautsky's "betrayal", insisting that the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat against the bourgeoisie was necessary and should not be encumbered by laws or moral considerations. A year later, Trotsky's book presented a longer justification for the temporary use of violence and terror in the transition to socialism, as well as a warning: "The man who repudiates the dictatorship of the proletariat repudiates the socialist revolution and digs the grave of socialism." This Georgian translation of Trotsky's work was issued after the Soviet invasion of Georgia and the creation of a Transcaucasian SFSR, together with former Armenia and Azerbaijan, in 1922. Its publication also followed the so-called Georgian Affair of 1922-1923, an important dispute about local autonomy and national interests in the region, which was ultimately decided in favor of Stalin and Ordzhonikidze, squashing Georgia's hopes of becoming an independent member state of the Soviet Union. Lenin himself followed the conflict, and was dismayed by Stalin's imposition of central authority on smaller nation states, and the Affair was perhaps the final reason for his break with the future leader of the Soviet Union. With his health declining, Lenin reached out to Trotsky in the hope of gaining him for the Georgian cause, but Trotsky was evidently suspicious of Georgia as a center of Menshevism. A scarce translation, which would have been subject to confiscation after Trotsky's fall from grace in the late 1920s. One of 2000 copies. We are unable to trace any copies in KVK or OCLC. Acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard ("Empire of the Sun," "Shakespeare in Love") adapted the miniseries from these four novels. Rarely offered as a set.

        The quantum theory of radiation.

Taylor & Francis, London 1924 - First edition of this celebrated paper. Its idea of modeling atomic behaviour under incident electromagnetic radiation using ‘virtual oscillators’ led Born and Heisenberg to explore mathematics that strongly inspired the subsequent development of matrix mechanics. The most striking feature of this remarkable paper, "The Quantum Theory of Radiation," was the renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description. Even the distribution of energy and momentum between the radiation field and the "virtual oscillators" constituting the atomic systems was assumed to be statistical, the conservation laws being fulfilled only on the average" (DSB). Rare in original printed wrappers.Following the discovery of the Compton effect late in 1922, many physicists had tried to account for the frequency shift of the scattered X-rays observed by Compton. Some found it difficult to accept Compton’s explanation in terms of light quanta (photons) with definite energy and momenta. Bohr, in particular, could not accept the existence of photons, writing in his Nobel lecture in December 1922, "In spite of its heuristic value, the hypothesis of light-quanta, which is quite irreconcilable with so-called interference phenomena, is not able to throw light on the nature of radiation." When the young American physicist John Slater arrived in Copenhagen just before Christmas 1923, and explained his new ideas on radiation theory, Bohr saw a way to explain the Compton effect without invoking light quanta. "BKS begin by recalling that ‘the exchange of energy and momentum between matter and radiation claims essentially discontinuous features. These have even [ ] led to the introduction of light-quanta ’ They abandon light-quanta in their own paper, replacing this concept by a new one ‘due to Slater the atom, even before the process of transition between stationary states takes place is capable of communicating with distant atoms through a virtual radiation field’, a field distinct from the conventional, real radiation field. This virtual field, carried by the atom in a given stationary state, was supposed to know and carry all the possible transition frequencies to lower states, one might say, to release one of these frequencies. Emission of light in an atomic transition is, BKS posited, not spontaneous but rather induced by the virtual fields ‘by probability laws analogous to those which in Einstein’s theory hold for induced transitions’. Accordingly, ‘the atom is under no necessity of knowing what transition it is going to make ahead of time’. "Does communication with a distant atom, the receipt of a light signal emitted by another atom ‘even before transition takes place’ not violate causality? It does. ‘We abandon any attempt at a causal connection between the transition in distant atoms, and especially a direct application of the principles of conservation of energy and momentum, so characteristic of classical theories Not only conservation of energy but also conservation of momentum [reduce to] a statistical law.’ Regarding Compton’s results, BKS noted, correctly, that so far his experiments had only confirmed energy-momentum conservation averaged over many individual processes, which was not in conflict with their statistical viewpoint" (Pais, Niels Bohr’s Times, pp. 236-7). Einstein and Pauli both reacted negatively to the BKS proposal, and "the paper was hardly in print before A. H. Compton and A. W. Simon had established by direct experiment the strict conservation of energy and momentum in an individual process of interaction between atom and radiation. Nevertheless, this short-lived attempt exerted a profound influence on the course of events; what remained after its failure was the conviction that the classical mode of description of the atomic processes had to be entirely relinquished" (DSB II, p. 247). The BKS paper was printed simultaneously in German as ‘Über die Quantentheorie der Strahlung’ in Zeitsc
