NEW HAMPSHIRE: A Poem With Notes and Grace Notes

New York: Henry Holt, 1923. First Edition, First Printing. Beautifully illustrated throughout with woodcuts by J. J. Lankes. 8vo, publisher's original half green cloth over gray paper covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt and with a gilt label lettered in gray on the upper cover, with the original publisher's printed and decorated dustjacket. 113 pp. A very good copy, internally very fine, fresh and clean, the binding with only a very small amount of age at the backstrip and a touch of rubbing to the bottom corners, the jacket present though with a bit of wear and some chipping, the rear panel more so than the front and spine panels which both still look quite nice. FIRST EDITION. NEW HAMPSHIRE is one of Frost's earlier works and also one of his greatest. The collection includes the title-poem, one of his longer works, as well as over 35 others. It includes such well known poems as; "Star-Splitter, "Dust to Snow" and perhaps one of his most often recited works "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", a perennial holiday favorite in New England and other chilly climes. Considered one of the greatest 20th century American poets, Frost also won much acclaim and popularity throughout the English speaking world. J.J. Lankes and Robert Frost enjoyed a long professional and personal association. Lankes' woodcuts beautified many of Frost's published works.

Tunica originale in crespo di seta

Über die Anwendung der Quantentheorie auf den Atombau: I. Die Grundpostulate der Quantentheorie" [On the Application of the Quantum Theory to Atomic Structure: The Basic Postulates of Quantum Theory] (Vol. 13, pp. 117-165) WITH "Über Phasenbeziehungen bei den Bohrschen Modellen von Atomen und Molekeln" [About Phase Relationships in the Bohr Models of Atoms and Molecules] (Vol. 14. pp. 44-55) in Zeitschrift für Physik 13 & 14 [Two Bound Together], 1923

Julius Springer, Berlin 1923 - BOUND FIRST EDITION OF BOHR's 1923 EXPLANATION OF THE ENTIRE RANGE OF QUANTUM PHENOMENA USING ONLY HIS TWO POSTULATES: THE EXISTENCE OF STATIONARY STATES AND THE EMISSION OF RADIATION IN TRANSITION BETWEEN TWO STATES. At the paper's conclusion, Bohr summarized the difficulties quantum mechanical theories had in coping with light quanta, coupling, and dispersion, thus setting the stage for the new quantum mechanics of Schrodinger and Heisenberg. Other papers of significance are noted following the Bohr discussion. As early as 1918, "Bohr had visualized, at least in outline, the whole theory of atomic phenomena. He of course realized that he was still very far from a logically consistent framework wide enough to incorporate both the quantum postulates and those aspects of classical mechanics and electrodynamics that seemed to retain some validity" (DSB). Bohr's intent in this paper was to "expound systematically the problems which have been met in the investigation of atomic structure" (Nielsen, Correspondence Principle, 40). As Heisenberg would later point out, Bohr (as he did with his correspondence principle) is careful in this paper to postulate a "detailed analogy between the quantum theory and the classical theory appropriate to the mental picture employed. This analogy does not merely serve as a guide to the discovery of formal laws; its special value is that it furnishes the interpretation of the laws that are found in terms of the mental picture used (Heisenberg, Physical Principles, 105). In the introduction, Bohr made a statement he was to repeat often: "Every description of natural processes must be based on ideas which have been introduced and defined by the classical theory" (Bohr, 117). The paper divides into three chapters: The Stationary States, The Process of Radiation, and On the Formal Nature of the Quantum Theory. Bohr wrote: "We shall try to show that, notwithstanding the uncertainty which the preceding considerations contain, it yet seems possible, even for atoms with several electrons, to characterize their motion in a rational manner by the introduction of quantum numbers? The demand for sharp, stable, stationary states can be referred to in the language of the quantum theory as a general principle of the existence and permanence of the quantum numbers" (Nielsen, 41). Bohr then discusses the issues which neither classical nor the present quantum theory had yet given "adequate account", thereby laying the groundwork for what was to come. ALSO INCLUDED: "Über Phasenbeziehungen bei den Bohrschen Modellen von Atomen und Molekeln" [About Phase Relationships in the Bohr Models of Atoms and Molecules] (Vol. 14, pp. 44-55). 1st ed. Born & Heisenberg's paper on Bohr's atomic model as a part of Heisenberg's habilitation. ALSO: Han's Kramers "Über das Modell des Heliumatoms" [The Model oft he Helium Atom] (Vol. 13, pp. 312-342). Kramer's application of Bohr's theories to the model of he helium atom. "By failing to obtain agreement with the observed ionization potential, it demonstrated very clearly the inability of classical mechanics, and hence the perturbation theory, to describe accurately the motion of electrons in an atom, even in a stationary state" (Nielsen, 41). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. 4to. (9 x 6.25 inches; 225 x 156mm). Two volumes bound as one. [vi], 406; [iv], 414, [2]. Tightly bound in blue cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine.         Alice Im Spiegelland [Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there].

1923 - Wien-Leipzig-New York; Sesam Verlag. 1923. 8vo. Original mid-blue cloth lettered gilt to spine with a decorative title in gilt to upper board, mid-blue endpapers, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; [vi], 7-121 + [ii]; with 12 fine, striking, and saturated, colour-lithographed plates in Expressionist style together with a decorative title in black and white; a very attractive copy indeed with mild dulling to spine gilt, internally fresh throughout with almost unavoidable even toning to text stock and a couple of insignificant edge nicks, protected by the remarkably elusive pictorial dustwrapper featuring an additional coloured plate not reproduced internally, the wrapper with light overall dusting, small loss to head of spine (maximum width 27mm), one or two short and closed edge tears, nicking to a couple of corners, and light lateral creasing to top edge. First edition illustrated thus. A very scarce edition indeed. Lovett (the seminal bibliography of Alice which lists over 2000 titles) records a copy of the same year in blue cloth, without the dustwrapper (item 689), with only 5 coloured plates and might therefore be incomplete, or an abridged reprint. Only two other copies of this book were traced in commerce at the time of cataloguing (at substantial prices) and neither possess the dustwrapper. Only 3 copies listed on Copac without the dustwrapper (Liverpool; V. & A.; Oxford). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Harmonium

New York: Knopf, 1923. Octavo, original blue cloth over patterned paper boards, paper spine label, uncut and partially unopened. First issue, with blue, red, yellow and white checkered pattern and red top edge. Light toning to spine label and boards, faint ring of a demitasse cup on the front board. Without extremely scarce dust jacket. Edelstein A1a-1. First edition, first issue, one of only 500 copies in the first-state binding. Although Stevens' poems had appeared in magazines for almost ten years, Harmonium was his first book, published when he was a middle-aged lawyer for a Hartford insurance company. Initially overshadowed by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, which had appeared the previous year, Harmonium stands alongside that work now as a milestone in modern American poetry; a few of the many highlights include "The Emperor of Ice-Cream," "Sunday Morning," "Anecdote of the Jar," "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," and "Le Monocle de Mon Oncle": "The honey of heaven may or may not come, / But that of earth both comes and goes at once." This copy bears the bookplate of popular Connecticut writer Annie Eliot Trumbull. A younger member of Mark Twain's circle and frequent contributor to the Atlantic Monthly, Trumbull had provided Stevens with his literary introduction to Hartford in 1913, driving him around the countryside by day and inviting him to a dinner party at her country club. Stevens reported to his wife: "The Miss Trumbull was, after all, a most agreeable person, with very pleasant manners and a sense of humor." Stevens and Trumbull would soon be neighbors: his longtime Hartford office was just down the block from her home. As a leader of the local Poetry Society, Trumbull organized events for Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, and William Butler Yeats over the years, but Stevens repeatedly turned down her invitations to appear (Brazeau 115, 304). Trumbull, in turn, does not seem to have made it through Harmonium: this copy is partially unopened. Small Hartford bookseller's ticket. A lovely association copy of a modernist landmark, housed in a custom clamshell box.

Voz odlazi Nova lirika, izdan'e Khipnos [The train is leaving New poems, published by Khipnos]

Belgrade: Khipnos, 1923. Octavo (19 × 14 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 18 pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to front wrapper verso. Wrappers expertly restored at upper corner; else about very good. First and only edition of this scarce, controversial volume of "constructivist" poems by Rade Drainac (whose real name was Radojko Jovanovi , 1899-1943), the founding member of the Yugoslav Surrealist group and editor of the Dadaist journal Khipnos, a "magazine for intuitive art" (1922-1923). With a striking constructivist wrapper design incorporating the motif of a train in motion, suggested by a large red square, with a smaller square evoking the raised railway signal, and the words "look out! signal" stacked below. Drainac is considered one of the most original and fascinating voices of Serbian interwar literature; he began writing as a symbolist and developed a highly unconventional, expressly avant-gardistic style around 1922. After 1926, Drainac lived in Paris, where he survived by playing the violin as an accompaniment to silent films, before returning to Serbia shortly before the war. Rear wrapper with an advert of Drainac's Erotikon. All of the author's works are very scarce. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at the British Library and Michigan.

The World Crisis (5 vol set)

Thornton Butterworth - The World Crisis (5 volume set), Winston S. Churchill, Thornton Butterworth, 1923, Very Rare Churchill's reflection on the First World War is considered by many to be his finest work despite living in the shadow of "The Second World War", and is considerably more scarce, with sets in good condition at a very high premium. This set is in remarkably good condition, particularly as it is approaching 100 years old. General comments (see individual volume description below for specifics) - there are no dust jackets as issued, the binding is tight and straight, the boards have retained their colour well with the gilt on the spines still bright and there are some age rubbing and markings but none of major significance. The endpapers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions with some minor foxing and tanning of the foredges. All maps are present in very good order. 1911-1914. Second Edition Second Impression (April 1923 same month as first publication), neat owner's name to first free endpaper. 1915. First Edition Third Impression (November 1923 a month after first publication), small tear to the cloth (not board) at base of spine. 1916-1918 Part I. First Edition Second Impression (March 1927 same month as first publication). 1916-1918 Part II. First Edition Second Impression (March 1927 same month as first publication). The Aftermath. First Edition Second Impression (March 1929 same month as first publication), neat owner's name inside front board. A very good set of a remarkable work that still looks resplendent on the shelf. A great gift for the historian or book collector. Will be despatched by courier wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
