New York, NY: The Macmillan Company, 1921. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by the author. Octavo, pp. xxxi; 784. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, in a stylish photographic dustjacket. Illustrated with two fold out maps, and several photographs. Fore edge and tail edge roughly trimmed. Cloth remains in very good condition, some damp staining extending along top half of front board, corners rubbed, endcaps pushed. Two large folding maps in pocket at rear, one in colour, uncoloured map somewhat tanned, pocket with small discoloured area. Internally clean, with very minor tanning to margins. Textblock has 'rippling' throughout, although this has not affected clarity of text/illustrations. Dustjacket in like, with some damp staining, dustiness, and light creasing to extremities; minor chips at ends of spine panel. Stefansson's weighty tome is an account of his five-year exploration of the Canadian Arctic, including his discovery of the edge of the continental shelf. It also recounts the details of his time spent investigating the lives of the Copper Inuit, including records of their supposedly all-meat diet. Author's inscription to flyleaf reads "Inscribed to Sidney Shea, by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Pittsburgh, January 16 1921". Of his icy exploration, Stefansson is reputed to have said that "there are two kinds of Arctic problems, the imaginary, and the real. Of the two, the imaginary are the most real."

HAGADAH SHEL PESAH [BUDKO HAGGADAH] Hagada shel Pesach [Passover haggadah, Pesah pessach pesakh]

Lowit, Berlin 1921 - 8vo. Black board hardcover with gilt illustration on front. With 39 woodcut historiated initials and lithograph etchings. Page 36 has a Budko design label pasted in place, see scan. Joseph Budko (1888-1940) , was a "painter and graphic artist. Budko, who was born in Plonsk, received a traditional Jewish education. In 1902 he went to study at the art school in Vilna. In 1910 Budko moved to Berlin where he learned metal-chasing and also studied at the Museum of Arts and Crafts. In Berlin Budko met Hermann Struck who taught him the technique of etching. Eventually he also took up woodcutting, lithography, and painting. In 1933 Budko settled in Palestine. In 1935 he became the director of the reopened New Bezalel school of arts and crafts. Budko stressed the teaching of graphic design and utilized the ornamental value of the Hebrew letters. Budko's subject matter was determined by the Jewish environment in which he grew up and to which he returned in Jerusalem. Budko developed a style that combined the personal with the Jewish, being a synthesis of Jewish tradition and modern art. He also revived the spirit of Jewish book illustration, adapting it to modern design. Among the books he illustrated are the Haggadah, and he designed many bookplates. " (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica). "Joseph Budko¿s Haggadah, 1921, skillfully integrated the Hebrew text with illustrations. Budko was thought to be withdrawn and outwardly cold, but his art was warm in a style that permitted a melding of tradition with modernism, slavery with redemption. His [illustration of a] faceless Jew trudges alone through history from a callous past to an unknowable future, moving over a snow-lined path, half-frozen, but determined and defiant. No signs or wonders for him - he knows he must make it on his own. " (Page 353 of "The way Jews lived: five hundred years of printed words and images¿ by Constance Harris).         [ALEXANDRA EXTER'S ARTWORK] Zapiski rezhissiora [i.e. Director's Notes]

Moscow: Kamerny teatr, 1921. 193 pp.: ill. 23x16 cm. Original illustrated wrappers. Some restoration of the covers and spine, some soiling, Soviet bookshop's stamp and label on the recto of the rear cover. Otherwise very good. First edition. One of 3000 copies. Rare. Initials, illustrations and cover design by Alexandra Exter (1882-1949), one of the most experimental women of the Russian avant-garde. She contributed to the success of Russian theatre scene: three productions of the Kamerny Theatre in Moscow that she designed ('Thamyris the Citharist', 'Salome' and 'Romeo and Juliet') are noted in the history of art as true masterpieces marked by costume and stage designs. This is the first theatre analysis from the perspective of the constructivist method. It includes Tairov's notes about all parts of theatre including actors, director, literature and music, costumes, theatre atmosphere and audience, and how all these parts should interact. Alexander Tairov (1885-1950) was Russian and Soviet actor and director. He was a founder of the Kamerny Theatre (1914-1949), a chamber theatre in Moscow. The decor for the theatre was designed by members of OBMOKHU (Society of Young Russian Artists). There was Konstantin Medunetskii, a Vladimir Tatlin's and Alexander Rodchenko's student. In 1922-1931 Stenberg Brothers was also designing sets and costumes for this theatre.
