Scrapbook]: U.S. Navy Sailor's Scrapbook kept during 1917-1921 in California, Hawaii, and Australia

California, Hawaii, Australia 1921 - Folio measuring 11" x 9.5". 76pp. Green "De Luxe Line" binder filled with photographs and ephemera from 1917-1921. Tears, foxing, and chips thus very good with fine photographs. A scrapbook detailing an U.S. Navy sailor's time in the Pacific during the end of World War I. Contains three sepia photographs sized between 5.5" x 3.5" and 4.5" x 2.5", as well as various ephemera including: Naval notices, menus, tickets, broadsides, pamphlets, seven postcards and 39 holiday cards.A scrapbook filled with various ephemera from the end of World War I put together by Willie Osburn, a U.S. Navy sailor. From 1917 to 1921, the scrapbook features notices from Naval posts, menus, tickets to events, broadsides, pamphlets for religious themes and informational guides, as well as postcards and holiday cards. Osburn sailed from Hawaii on the S.S. Ventura to San Francisco, California where several of the Naval notices and menus are from a training station there. One menu from the training station features a large eagle holding a rock and paper with the words "Kultur," on it. The Date is July 4th, 1918 and is in full color with a small poem by Henry Van Dyke on the verso. Several other cards and menus are decorated in bright colors, a St. Patrick's day card features an embroidered four leaf clover in green, a Valentine's day card features two small children holding hands with a poem, and several Christmas cards are decorated with holly, angels, and trees. There are also seven postcards from Australia and California that were sent to Osburn featuring illustrated pictures of different locations. The broadsides feature information for various events such as dance nights, theatrical performances, and high society club events. Among the ephemera Osburn has several membership cards and pamphlets from the Islamic Temple (Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine) in California. The fraternity had nothing to do with Arab culture or Islam but was a prominent social club in the United States. There are also a couple of illustrations of the Freemasonry symbol included in the scrapbook. The Naval training station's Gazette is also tipped into the scrapbook. The Yerba Buena Gazette volume 1, number 1 issue from October 3rd, 1918 which briefly talks about the spread of Spanish Influenza throughout the world and how many of the Naval camps, are being put under quarantine. Another article talks about the mission of the Naval station, "The mission of every man in the Navy is 'To help the Navy win the war," and goes on to explain that without a mission a man is worthless. Other small, less serious articles are written about camp shows and performances as well as sports games and personal ads. The letters to Osburn are brief and usually ask how he is doing and that his mother is ill. Several letters all give their sympathy to Osburn for losing a family member, but even these letters are a page or less. Aside from the brightly colored cards, interesting pamphlets, and hopeful letters, the time frame does show in a letter from the commandant. The letter states that "All marriages of members of the naval personnel attached to station and ships with persons of other races are prohibited." It can be assumed since the Navy sailors were stationed on Hawaii and Samoa that they may have had relations with other races during their time there. Osburn's scrapbook ends in 1921 with a detailed review of his banking statements but he did go on to serve in World War II and died in 1971. An extensive look at the various types of ephemera collected during the end of World War I by a Navy Sailor serving in the U.S.

        Glimpses of the Yantze Gorges.

Shanghai, Hongkong, Singapore, Yokohama, Hankow, Kelly & Walsh, 1921. 8vo. Original blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt; pp. xi, 86, colour frontispiece, highly illustrated with plates after photographs and after drawings by Ivon A. Donelly; one plate and two pages with brown spot; provenance: Captain Arthur Tucker's copy, with interesting annotations about the author in ink (see below). First edition, a moving association copy, of a book capturing the drama of navigating the Yangtze Gorges, written by 'The Grand Old Man of the Yangtze,' who had spent half his life navigating the river in his role as Customs River Inspector. This was the definitive, publicly availabe guide to navigating the Yangtze, including chapters on different types of junks and modern steamers. Provenance: Captain Arthur Tucker served as officer and master of the China Navigation Company of London for over 20 years. He commanded many vessels registered in the East and South China Sea, and navigated theYangtze. His ship was torpedoed in 1918, and in 1919 he was selected by the Company's Marine Superintendent at Shanghai to study the navigation of the gorges and rapids of the Upper Yangtse on a purpose-built steamer. After a visit to his hometown Hull, he returned with the new turbine steamer Kweiyang, where he inscribed this volume in his neat copperplate hand in December 10, 1921 in Hongkong. On the blank he commemorates the author of this book: 'Capt S. C.Plant died on board the Blue Funnel Steamer "Teiresias" between Shanghai & Hong Kong. 26/2/21. Mrs. S. C. Plant died at Hong Kong on March 1/3/21. Buried together at Happy Valley Cemetery, Hong Kong, March 2nd 1921'. This inscription is accompanied by a pasted down original photograph of the author's grave stone in Hong Kong.

        Geometrie und Erfahrung (pp.121-131).

S.ber. Akad. Wiss. Berl., 1921/ 5. - Berlin 1921, 8, S.103-166, OBrosch unaufgeschnittenes frisches Exemplar. The quite rare first edition and first appearance in print, rarely found in this fine condition, unopened and in original wrappers! During the early years of the second decade of this century Einstein was also concerned to clarify misconceptions about the theory of relativity and to present his views on natural sciences on a less abstract level. Among the efforts in this direction, his particular beautiful lecture on "Geometry and Experience" stands out. At the Prussian Academy's commemorative session honouring Frederick the Great, founder of the Academy, Einstein delivered this lecture in which he summed up his views on the geometrization of physics and relativity and the relation of mathematics to the external world. Here he gave his famous answer to the puzzling question of why mathematics should be so well adapted to describing the external world: "Insofar as the Laws of Mathematics refer to the external world, they are not certain and insofar as they are certain, they do not refer to reality. The lecture was extended to book form. cf. W.Alicke. Weil No.114 Schlipp-Shields No.148

Series of 4 letters: 3 ALS and 1 LS + autograph additions, Cleveland OH, 1947-1951, 13 pages large 4to. With 1 envelope. Good condition. With interesting addenda (below).

Wood, Jasper (1921-2002), American civil rights activist, photographer and writer. The letters are addressed to the American writer and editor (Carrefour Press) Michael Fraenkel (1896-1957), in the 1930s in Paris a close friend and furtherer of Henry Miller ("Boris" in Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" is modeled after him). - At the time when these letters were written young Jasper Wood made his first literary steps and was about to make a name of himself as a photographer. He was highly attracted by Fraenkel's concept of the spiritual death suffered by materialist Western man, as laid down in Fraenkel's books "Werther's Younger Brother" (1930), "Bastard Death (1936)" and "Death Is Not Enough"(1939) - a spiritual death to be overcome by the return to human love, which Wood refers to as "religiousness".1) July 19, (1947). After their first meeting (in Fraenkel's home in New York) Wood writes he had been going "through a horrible Werther period" due to his "working in the commercial world" - "My photography has become my only creative outfit for the time being - and I have even sold some of it ...Our talk and the presence reveales how deeply you are motivated by this religiousness within your mind!!! With Miller its in his guts!!! And with Patchen its deep in his soul ..." Joyce, Picasso, and Freud were realizing this need for religiousness to a degree, yet "they were men of action - not men of love - and they went deep into the Bastard Death, which is the same as Lawrences Masturbative Man ..."2) No date (1947). Lengthily discussing his book project "The Voice of the Apocalypse" in which he wishes to present (together with prospective co-authors like Fraenkel) "the general history of Apocalyptic writing", naming Celine, Henry Miller, Kenneth Patchen, Dylan Thomas and others. - "Is Giono an apocalyptic voice, or is he a pastoralist ...Did I tell you Bastard Death was the only book in English in Otto Rank's library when he died? Well it was, a signed copy ..."3) (September 26, 1947). Again on the book project, and on Miller. "... Am enclosing a letter from Miller's wife that speaks for itself. As a man he seems about through - and as a writer just beginning. But for a man like Miller to have a wife say no - that's too much. He likes Lawrence - but remember how Lawrence hated the possessiveness of the word 'wife'. And when she refers to him as 'Henry Miller' it's too much. It sounds too much like God. Patchen and Miller create the same response - you don't - and therein lies your inviolate fineness ...Don't ever let what has happened to Miller in America happen to you. If it starts - well, go away again ... And keep your manhood. I need Miller in the book though - can you get him to cooperate, do you think? ...Oh, that Miller, he knew the need of destroying the artist in the man in his heart and soul and guts and then becomes more and more artist and less and less man. It's horrible - and if he knows what is going on ... it must hurt like hell. He needs someone like you now more than ever before ..."4) June 24 (1951). Typewritten letter on post-war Europe. "... I can well imagine that you found Europe today not for people like us ... The blood is stale, and I believe that Lawrence would at long last give up on his loved Italy. The final straw is to read that a bunch of homosexuals are living in Lawrence's old home there. They are seemingly supported by Caresse Crosby - said group includes Pearl Kazin, Truman Capote, etc. ... Tennessee Williams ... has also stayed with this group. Death-stayed dead, that's the only word for it. Then ... those rather horrible long, exhausingly drawnout notebooks of Andre Gide. This to me seems to paint the inner exhaustion of that part of the world today ..." Subsequently discussing Pound and Céline - the latter "may become a saint ... Because through what appeared to be attacks upon the Jews he became the Jew through the world's attacks upon him. He bore the brunt - and he lives ... Most of the others may have experienced horror, but they did not come through. And today they live as parasites on the side of the ugly hulk that is left.I have been doing a great deal of photography. Enclosed is the announcement for a show I had in the winter ... Won first award at Cleveland Museum of Art for group of three negro photographs. Have also been photographing an ana-baptist sect ... the amish ... They are shrewd, hard, tight, hypocritical as any people ever were ... yet with a strange beauty in their children, and a clean hardness about their lives which is most attractive ... But when a people use their religious people use their orthodox beliefs as a shield against the encroachment of the material world, they are already in defeat ... The new quality is born of out Life through Death, and an Acceptance of the disease and all it was and ever can be. Accept, but no longer be prodded by - that is the greatness of living after coming from out of the valley of Death ..." (The announcement mentioned is still with the letter).Enclosed are a typewritten copy of another letter from JW to MF another printed announcement of an exhibition a letter by his wife Nancy to MF's wife Daphne (1947) a typewritten essay by Fraenkel on JP (4 pages) and photocopies of several letters from MF to JP, 1945-1951 (50 pages).

Quarante Clichés-Glace, tirés sur les plaques provenant de la collection de M. Cuvelier

Paris: Maurice Le Garrec, 1921. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Two letterpress bifolia: half-title and title, and 'Avertissement' and table. 40 cliché verre prints, originally 1854-1904, on smooth wove paper, each print with the stamp of Sagot-Le Garrec (L. 1766a), and numbered 44/150 in pencil on the reverse, the full sheets as published, hinged at the upper reverse corners, in mounts stamped with the plate numbers. 481 x 394 mm overall, plate sizes vary. Loose in original cloth-board portfolio, gilt-lettered on front. Some staining to text leaves, plates in fine condition. LIMITED EDITION, number 44 of 150 sets. A superb collection by the Parisian art dealer and publisher Maurice Le Garrec reprinting cliché verre plates from Corot, the master of the technique, Daubigny, Delacrois, Millet, and Rousseau, all masters of the Romantic and Barbizon schools. Though they are reproduced in black rather than the characteristic brown inks of the 19th-century impressions, the scarce portfolio increased public awareness of the printmaking process. See Alain Paviot, Le cliché-verre. Corot, Delacroix, Millet, Rousseau, Daubigny, Paris 1995, pp. 9-14. Comprising: J. B. C. Corot (19): La Petite Soeur; Le Petit Cavalier sous Bois; Le Songeur; La Jeune Fille et la Mort; Le Grand Cavalier sous Bois; Le Petit Berger, 1ere planche; Le Petit Berger, 2me planche; Le Jardin de Péricles ; L'Allée des Peintres; Griffonnage; Le Grand Bucheron; La Tour d'Henri VIII; Souvenir d'Ostie; Les Jardins d'Horage; Jeune Mère a l'Entrée d'un Bois; Les Arbres dans la Montagne; Un Déjeuner dans la Clairiére; La Ronde Gauloise; Souvenir du Bas-Brau (L.D. 41-3, 45-6, 49-50, 52-60, 65-6, 73).  C. Daubigny (16): Le Marais aux Canards; Les Cerfs; Sentier dans les Blés; Le Pont; Le Ruisseau dans la Clairière; Le Grand Parc à Moutons; Le Gu; La Rentrée du Troupeau; La Gardeuse de Chèvres; La Fenaison; L'Ane au Pré; Effet de Nuit; Le Bouquet d'Aunes; Vaches a l'Abreuvoir; La Machine Hydraulique; Vaches sous Bois (L.D. 133-147, 149); E.         [Photo Album]: Women in College

Massachusetts, 1921. Very Good. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 7" x 10". Stapled black cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 262 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 6" x 8", some with captions. Very good album with some chips and tears on the boards and leaves, with near fine photographs some with fading.A photo album compiled by a young woman attending college in Massachusetts beginning in 1919. From street signs it appears she went to Fitchburg Normal School, now Fitchburg State University, in North Central Massachusetts. Many of the photos show the women posed around campus with one photo of the four women huddled together smiling which reads, "fresh freshman," another shows them climbing a sign for Pearl Hill Road. They also visited friends, both men and women, at Harvard. Two photos show members of Fitchburg's girls' basketball team with a caption which reads, "Rah, Rah, Rah!" and another which reads "the victorious five 3 cheers!" Many of the photos show the women posing and being silly with such captions as: "naughty, naughty," "why Vera!," and "asleep at the switch." The women are seen in fashionable outfits, school uniforms, and hats throughout the album. One particularly intriguing image shows a woman, her hat in hand, passionately kissing a female schoolmate with a caption that read: "you mouthwatering Sappho." The women in this set of photos are flirty and smiling and posing on a bridge in a wooded area. After graduating the complier became a school teacher in 1921 and there are photos of her with her class of younger girls posed in a school yard and during a school play. Other photos include family snapshots and vacation photos featuring one of the women posed in her new car and another of a woman with a baseball bat.An compelling collection of photos focusing on a woman's time in college and her relationships with her classmates.
