Adrien Sénéchal concernant sa collection de gravures et d'illustrations de Reims sous les bombardements, il souhaite obtenir une de ces impressions qu'il trouve « très poétique et magnifique » [poetic and beautiful idea].         The Works of Henry James.

London: Macmillan and Company, 1921-23. Finely bound set of Henry James. The large format edition printed in London of the final and most complete collected works, with additions and corrections to the New York edition. Octavo, 35 volumes, bound in contemporary three quarters red morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt. Volume 24 constitutes the first English appearance of the short novel Watch and Ward. Prefatory notes by Percy Lubbock. In fine condition. A exceptional set. Henry James is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of renowned philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between emigre Americans, English people, and continental Europeans - examples of such novels include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and The Wings of the Dove. His later works were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often made use of a personal style in which ambiguous or contradictory motivations and impressions were overlaid or closely juxtaposed in the discussion of a single character's psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to impressionist painting. In addition to voluminous works of fiction, James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays.

THE WANDERINGS OF A SPIRITUALIST [inscribed plus three letters]

1921 - [FOUR signatures of A. Conan Doyl] Illustrated. New York: George H. Doran Company, n.d. [1921]. Original green cloth. First American Edition, issued in the same month as the English edition, and consisting of only 1500 copies. This is Doyle's account of his 1920-1921 missionary tour of Australia and New Zealand, spreading his belief in spiritualism. Though a travel account, there is much spiritualistic content; for example, it includes a photograph of the "God-speed luncheon" given in London to wish the travelers well on their voyage -- at which "250 out of 290 guests rose as testimony that they were in personal touch with their dead." The following year (see below), Doyle and his family traveled to America for a similar "missionary trip" (9 April - 22 June), giving speeches for the cause of spiritualism -- which trip would result in his book OUR AMERICAN ADVENTURE (1923). This is a good-to-very good copy, with some wear along some edges and with minor speckling of the cloth. Green & Gibson B28b.~This copy is inscribed by Doyle, "Yours in the great cause of Spirit | Arthur Conan Doyle | May 31 /22". As of this date Doyle and his family were back in New York City, staying at the Ambassador Hotel -- after a loop that included Toronto, Toledo and Chicago.~Tipped onto the front endpaper is an Ambassador Hotel note-card written and signed by Doyle, to "My dear Stilwell," dated May 30" and reading "We are clear tomorrow (Wednesday). I could imagine nothing more pleasant than to start about 3:30 or later and drive with you, if we could get back about 6 or later. Perhaps you would let us know. Hurriedly, A. Conan Doyle". Clearly, Doyle did meet up with "Stilwell" the next day, at which time he gave him this book.~Arthur Edward Stilwell (1859-1928) had been the developer and (in 1897-1900) the president of the KCP&G Railroad -- the Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf, later the Kansas City Southern. He claimed that he made many of his decisions by consulting his "brownies" -- nocturnal spiritual fairies providing guidance. For example he claimed that his brownies had advised him not to make Galveston the Gulf terminus of his line, because that city was destined to be destroyed by a tidal wave -- which it would be in 1900; he placed the terminus at a different location, which he founded and named for himself -- Port Arthur. (Stilwell Oklahoma is also on the line.) According to a 2009 article about "Stilwell's gift," "Arthur Conan Doyle and other authorities on the supernatural considered Stilwell to have the greatest psychic experiences known to man" [Red Dirt]. Six years after these letters, Stilwell died of apoplexy in New York City; thirteen days later, his wife took her life by jumping out of their window. It was learned that they were virtually penniless.~Loosely inserted is another autograph note to "My dear Stilwell" and signed "A. Conan Doyle," dated "June 29" on a note-card bearing the banner of the White Star Line (the Doyles sailed home on the RMS Adriatic). The note's text reads:~I wrote before I left but I fear I misaddressed. I wish I could have seen you but I had a fearsome pressure at the end. | I have read your book "The Light". It is a very level & workmanlike production, with no highlights, but never sinking below a good quality. I agree with your Publishers that it would be better not to allude to the Brownies. It is difficult not to think that it is some literary secondary personality of your own. | I hope some path may open up for your Spiritual labours. I have written about you in my little book which MAY run almost at once in the N.Y. American. I have left nothing undone to smooth your way, but when it comes to a business proposition it becomes outside my powers. | Our joint remembrance to your wife.~Lastly, there is another autograph letter signed, again to "My dear Stilwell" but dated "Sept 24" and on Doyle's Crowborough stationery, in which Doyle wrote:~I am full of sympathy but it is simply impossible for me to fal [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Correspondence and Papers of the New York City Charter Revision Commission, 1921-1923

7 volumes as follows: 4 volumes of Correspondence, 2 volumes of the "Original Draft of Charter," and 1 volume of Miscellaneous Papers, all dated 1921-1923, as follows:4 volumes of Correspondence, 619 letters, 521 pp., bound with two-hole paper fasteners, stiff paper wrappers, mostly typed and signed, except for outgoing letters, which are copies, ex-library, ink stamp inside front wrappers, with dated ink stamp "Aug - 1923." The four volumes consist of letters bound together in chronological order beginning on 15 November 1921 through 23 April 1923. The volumes include approximately 350 incoming letters to the Charter Revision Commission, mainly addressed either to the chairman, Francis M. Scott (62 letters), or to the counsel to the Commission, Edward J. McGoldrick (71 letters), or secretary of the Commission, Prof. Howard L. McBain (29), or Henry de Forest Baldwin (38 letters), when Baldwin took over as chairman of the Commission after Scott's death. There are also approximately 269 retained copies of outgoing letters by Scott (20 letters), McGoldrick (60 letters), McBain (21 letters), and of Henry de Forest Baldwin (10 letters), and some others. McBain and McGoldrick wrote more of the outgoing letters after the death of Scott in February 1922, and before a new chairman was appointed. Baldwin was appointed the new chairman to the Commission to replace Scott. There are many copies of letters that are simply signed as "Secretary," which McBain likely wrote, as he was the Secretary. There are also many letters written and addressed simply to the "Charter Revision Commission," rather than to the chairman, counsel, or an individual board member, as well as outgoing letters with no title, or signature. The correspondents to the Commission tend to be other Commission members, or the many law firms they dealt with, or people who represented various organizations, or entities. These correspondents offer suggestions to the Commission, or simply want their voices heard by the Commission, or seek to make appointments with the Commission in order to talk about the topics that interest them. There are also a number of private businesses, contractors, building trades, and related businesses, etc., that write to the Commission. There are also letters that detail the "day to day" operations of the Commission from setting up meetings to lining up printers to print their various reports, or hiring stenographers to take notes, and simply answering requests of libraries interested in their publications, etc. Several of the various departments of New York City write to try to get an understanding of what things might be introduced into the revised Charter that would affect their departments. Some of the organizations, or entities private, civic, and governmental, that wrote to the Commission include: Non-Profit Entities: National Municipalities League; Parks and Playground Association of the City of New York; American Society of Landscape Architects - New York Chapter; Citizens Union of the City of New York; Tenement House Committee; Taxpayers Association; New York Botanical Garden; Municipal Art Society of New York; State Charities Aid Association; Housing Committee of the Brooklyn Bureau of Charites; Committee on Non-Partisan Facts about New York's 1921 Campaign and Budget; Proportional Representation League; National Museum League; Institute for Government Research; Zoning Committee; Brooklyn Academy of Music; Firemen's Association of the State of New York; International Children's School Farm League; The Women's Civic Committee; and League of Women's Voters -7th Assembly District. His secretary also wrote several letters, as does Fiorello H. La Guardia, who wrote 1 letter in his role as the President of the Board of Aldermen; other members of the Commission write letters, or have letters written to them. Various state officials write from their different positions (state comptroller, etc.) 2 volumes of "Original Draft of Charter," 146 pp., and 201 pp., bound with two-hole paper fasteners, paper wrappers, typed with editing in pencil to text, library ink stamp inside front, also dated ink stamp "Aug 7 -1923."This is the original draft of the newly revised New York City Charter, divided in half in two volumes, with some edits made to the text by someone from the Commission, either Scott, his predecessor Baldwin, or possibly Franklin W.M. Cutcheon who took over as counsel for the Commission when McGoldrick left. Cutcheon is known to have been the one who wrote the final revised charter. 1 volume of Miscellaneous Papers, comprised of 21 different items, approximately 160 pp., typed and printed, dated 1921-1923, bound with two-hole metal paper fasteners, paper wrappers, front wrapper detached, library ink stamp inside front, with ink stamp date "Aug 7 - 1923," volume consists of the following documents:1. Draft Report of the New York Charter Commission [includes editing in pencil to text]21. Proposed Constitutional Amendments Reported by the Commission to the Legislature May 1, 1923. Historical BackgroundGreater New York was formed by an Act of the Legislature passed in 1897 to take effect on January 1, 1898. When a bill providing for a commission, the duty of which would be to draft a new charter making consolidation effective, was presented to the City authorities, it was vetoed by the mayor. The veto was over-ridden by the Legislature with but little consideration, and the bill was approved by the Governor. The Commission appointed in 1896 to prepare a charter for the consolidated city, recognized the difficulty of the task committed to them and the distinctively original legislation affecting the organization of the City proposed by the Commission of 1896. This proposal was the creation of the borough system, the local improvement boards and the Board of Public Improvements, the latter consisting of the borough presidents, the Mayor, Comptroller, Corporation Counsel, and the heads of the six departments of Water Supply, Highways, Street Cleaning, Sewers, Public Buildings, Lighting and Supplies, and Bridges. The Commission provided a series of checks and safeguards against hasty and ill-considered action, and believed that it had devised a system which would render habitual recourse to the Legislature unnecessary. The Revision Commission of 1900 pointed out the failure of this legislative feature of the first charter. In its report it found that "although it was the purpose of the former Commission to confer upon the City this large measure of self-government, it has been found in practice that difficulties which perhaps could not reasonably have been anticipated have rendered the provisions of the charter ineffectual to carry out such purposes. The 'checks and safeguards,' which it was thought necessary to place upon the action of the various municipal bodies are so numerous, and the powers of legislation are so minutely sub-divided and so widely distributed, that it was proved extremely difficult and often impossible, to secure prompt results upon other than routine matters."After the Revision Commission of 1900 abolished the Board of Public Improvements and distributed the powers among the borough presidents, heads of certain departments, and the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, it made further radical changes. The legislative body was reduced to a single chamber, and the Board of Estimate and Apportionment for the first time in its twenty-seven years of existence was made to consist wholly of elected, instead of elected and appointed officials. Borough Presidents were made members, together with the Mayor, Comptroller, and the President of the Board of Aldermen, thus radically changing the historical character of the Board, a change which, after more than six years of trial, did not justify the actions of its authors, thus bringing about the need for another commission. The demand for a new charter for the city was so insistent, that in 1907 a law was enacted providing for the appointment of the New York Charter Commission. This Commission reported to the Legislature in 1909. The Commission claimed that the work of framing a new charter was one upon which no time limit should be set and against its wishes, presented their report to the Legislature. The Commission presented a charter and an administrative code. It considered as the chief value of its work, "the attempt to separate the organic or structural matters of the city government from the adjective or administrative details." Unfortunately, this idea was the first to be put into the waste basket as when presented to the Legislature, the Legislature's Committee formed to handle the Charter Commission report found it impossible to separate the two (structural & administrative). The end result of the Legislature's Committee was the Hammond Charter of 1910 and the later Hammond Charter of 1911. Neither Charter was acted upon by the Legislature. Then came the Cullen-Foley (or Gaynor) Charter of 1911, again the work of the Legislature's Committee, which passed the Assembly, but failed in the Senate. However, all was not lost as many recommendations by the Charter Revision Commission of 1907-1909 and the Charter Legislative Committee of 1910-1911 were enacted and helped to improve city government. It is this historical backdrop that led to the formation of the New York Charter Revision Commission of 1921-1923. The following text is taken from a 1921 issue of "Greater New York: Bulletin of the Merchants' Association of New York" (vol. X, No. 19, pp. 9):"Charter Revision CommissionChapter 342, Laws of 1921 An Act to provide for the appointment of a commission to inquire into the local government of the City of New York. Approved 30 April 1921; effective 1 Nov 1921. Creates the New York Charter Commission, consisting of fifteen persons, residents of New York City, to be appointed by the Governor within thirty days after 1 Nov 1921. As members of the Commission the Governor is required to appoint the Mayor, the Comptroller, one of the Boroughs Presidents, and one member of the Board of Aldermen. The Commission is empowered to investigate the local government of New York City, the manner of conducting and transacting business in the several departments, boards and offices thereof, the effect and working of the Greater New York charter, and all other acts relating to the City, and to suggest such legislation as it may deem advisable with respect thereto The Commission is also charged with drafting and submitting with its final report a new charter and, within its discretion, an administrative code or other body of supplementary local law for enforcement within New York City. Progress reports are to be made to the 1922 Legislature, together with bills to carry out the recommendations of the Commission." Members of the New York Charter Revision CommissionNew York Governor Nathan Lewis Miller (1868-1953) was previously a state comptroller (1901-1903) and New York State Supreme Court Justice (1903-1915). He became Governor of New York in 1921 and served for two years. He was good friends with Andrew Carnegie and helped Carnegie's U.S. Steel Corporation effect the mergers that created this early mega-corporation that made Carnegie wealthy. Governor Miller was tasked with the job of appointing the fifteen members of the Charter Revision Commission, which required among the fifteen appointees the mayor of NYC, one of the New York City borough presidents, a NYC alderman, and the NYC Comptroller. The fifteen men that Miller appointed were:John Francis Hylan (1868-1936) was the mayor of New York City when appointed by Governor Miller. The other required picks were: Edward Reigelmann (1869-1941), Borough President of Brooklyn; John J. Keller, Alderman of New York City; and Charles L. Craig (1872-1935), comptroller of New York City. There are several letters to and from these individuals in this collection.Other appointments were: Francis M. Scott (1848-1922), appointed chairman of commission. Scott was a former New York State Supreme Court Justice. He died while serving as chairman on the commission in 1922 and due to Scott's death, the commission's final report to the state legislature was delayed. Governor Miller replaced Scott with Henry DeForest Baldwin (1862-1947). Baldwin was a well-known New York City attorney. He also replaced Scott as chairman of the commission as well. There are a number of letters both to and from Scott, as well as Baldwin.Edward M. Bassett (1863-1948), considered the "The Father of American Zoning," was appointed by Governor Miller. Bassett wrote the first comprehensive zoning ordinance in the United States, which was adopted by NYC in 1916. Bassett also served as U.S. Congressman (1903-1905) from New York. George Cromwell (1860-1934) was an attorney and politician tapped by Miller. He was the son of Henry Bowman Cromwell, founder of the Cromwell Shipping Line. George Cromwell was a former president of the borough of Manhattan and was previously a New York State Senate (1915-1918).Others appointed by Miller were: Lewis Lewis Delafield (1886-1957), a New York City attorney, served on several commissions for Governors Alfred E. Smith and Thomas E. Dewey; attorney Joseph M. Levine; Professor Howard L. McBain (1880-1936), an American political scientist, and the person credited with originating the phrase "Living Constitution." McBain was a professor of municipal science and administration at Columbia University. There are a number of letters written by and to McBain as he acted in the capacity of Secretary for the Commission. Others who were appointed to the Commission were, businessman and politician Herman A. Metz (1867-1934), Metz served as U.S. Congressman and former Comptroller of NYC; Colonel William B. Parsons (1859-1932), a civil engineer who founded the firm that became Parsons Brinckerhoff, one of the largest American civil engineering firms, he served in the Spanish-American War as a colonel and in WWI as a general; Frank L. Polk (1871-1943), a prominent U.S. lawyer and name partner of the law firm today known as Davis Polk & Wardwell, he was the first U.S. Under Secretary of State (1919-1920) appointed by President Wilson and served on the American Commission to Negotiate Peace (1919), representing the U.S. after Wilson and Secretary Lansing departed France in 1919.Rounding out the Commission were Arthur S. Somers (1866-1932), a Brooklyn businessman who served as President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and also served on the board of Brooklyn Mass Transit (BMT) and as commissioner and president of the Brooklyn Board of Education; and lastly H. Pushae Williams, a businessman, banker, and president of the Queens Chamber of Commerce.Edward J. McGoldrick was picked to act as counsel for the New York City Charter Revision Commission. When McGoldrick was latter appointed to the New York State Supreme Court he replaced as counsel by F.W. M. Cutcheon, who appears to have been tasked with the job of writing up the final revised charter. The political affiliations of the Commission were evenly divided and made up of seven democrats and seven republicans, with one independent democrat. They represented the interests from the various boroughs of New York City and included both political and business interests.

(Preface to) SIMPLE COOKING PRECEPTS FOR A LITTLE HOUSE [1/100 copies signed by Conrad]

1921. [signed by Conrad] by Jessie Conrad. [No place: privately printed, 1921.] Original stapled self-wrappers. First Edition, being one of 100 copies numbered and signed by Conrad (this being #62). "This preface to Jessie's cookery book shares the distinction with the preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' of probably having been ordered printed by Conrad himself rather than by one of those pamphlet manufacturers who were responsible for most of [his] 'privately printed' works" [Cagle]. Conrad had written this preface sometime between 1909 and 1911, "on the occasion of a half jocular suggestion by a friend that Mrs. Conrad should write a cookery book. But it was [not until 1920-1921] while detained indoors and often laid up in consequence of a serious operation that Mrs. Conrad was induced to take up the old suggestion" (per Conrad's secretary in 1921). The preface appeared first in this four-page form, and then, after appearing in 1923 in her book (actually titled A HANDBOOK OF COOKERY FOR A SMALL HOUSE), this preface was included with the title "Cookery" in Conrad's LAST ESSAYS.~This is a fine copy.         Miftah al-lugha [= Key to language]. [Istanbul?], (dated at the end of the text:) 1028 AH [= 1618/19]. Small 4to (22 x 14 cm). An Ottoman manuscript guide to the Persian language with an alphabetical Persian-Turkish glossary, written in Turkish and Persian in an Arabic script in black and red ink on heavily sized and burnished Venetian paper, with 8 later(?) Ottoman astronomical illustrations (7 full-page and 1 double-page) drawn and painted in ink and coloured gouaches (some with gold) mounted over 9 text pages. Contemporary goatskin.

For the text: F. Bleiber, Der Sprachschlüssel des Scheich Mahmud ibn Adham (1921); G. Flügel, Arabischen, Persischen und Türkischen Handschriften der ... Hofbibliothek zu Wien (1865), 121. An Ottoman manuscript guide to the Persian language by Mahmud ibn-Adham, who appears to have originally written it in 896 AH (1490/91). The central section is an alphabetical Persian-Turkish glossary. The text block measures 15 x 8.5 cm, with 13 lines of text per page with some words in red, some pages with interlinear text in red and/or text in the fore-edge margin in black and/or red. The 8 astronomical illustrations match each other in format (except that one is double-page) and style, and were probably produced as a set. Since these illustrations are mounted on the leaves of the manuscript (covering all but the first lines of the text on 9 pages) and bear little relation to the content of the manuscript, they were clearly added at a later date. That does not necessarily mean they were drawn and painted after the manuscript was written, but we suspect they date from ca. 1700. In the illustration on leaf 91, eight of the nine astronomers and their instruments are clearly copied directly or indirectly from a 1577 (985 AH) view of Taqi al-Din's observatory in Istanbul (Istanbul University Library, MS F1404, fol. 57a) and the ninth appears to be a mirrored and shifted copy of a figure from that view. With owner's stamp overlapping one corner of 7 of the 8 mounted illustrations (so mostly in the margin of the manuscript leaf) and several inscriptions in Arabic script. With occasional mostly marginal stains at the head and in the gutter, slightly affecting the text on a few leaves, and a few small and mostly marginal worm holes in the first few and last few leaves, but otherwise in good condition and with the colours in the astronomical illustrations fresh and bright. The sewing in a couple quires has come loose, and the binding is worn, with some chips and tears in the spine. A ca. 1618/19 Ottoman manuscript guide to the Persian language, with 8 stunning astronomical illustrations mounted on its leaves.

Rheinsberg. Ein Bilderbuch für Verliebte. Mit 8 (davon 6 ganzs.) Orig.-Radierungen von Kurt Szafranski.

Bln., Axel Juncker Vlg. 1921 - Berlin, Axel Juncker Vlg. [1921]. 101 S., 1 Bl. 8°. Grüner OHLdr. mit goldgepräg. RTitel, farb. illustr. [. . .]". [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
