Memoirs of a Lady Motorist. By Olivia Graham (Associate of the Royal Automobile Club) ... With nine Plates and a Map of Scotland.

London, George Routledge, 1916. Small 8vo. Original cloth, ruled and lettered in green; pp. [iv], 116, [8, illustrated motoring-related advertisements], colour portrait, plates after photographs, colour-printed map of Scotland; near-fine. First edition, very rare, privately printed, despite the commercial publisher. The pioneering author set out in her American Flanders 20-hp car across Scotland, including the Highlands. In the second part of the book Miss Flanders (after having run almost 10,000 miles) was replaced by 'Brownie', an Argyll 12/18, a Dumbartonshire-manufactured vehicle. - A good and early motoring book and a book on the rough topography of Scotland, written by a female motoring pioneer.

The Cavalier: Double Xmas No: 1916

Moulin Almond, Perthshire, , 1916–30. Vol. IV. No: III. [Together with:] Photograph album of the Smythe family. 2 volumes, octavo and landscape octavo: The Cavalier (270 x 195 mm) handmade binding of cream-coloured card covers stitched to a ribbed silk spine, front cover hand-painted with a gilt border enclosing a running decoration of holly and berries, central panel hand-painted with three ringing bells entwined with ropework that drops down to form the lettering "The Cavalier Xmas 1916"; photograph album: attractive art deco binding of multicoloured striped cloth with chevron pattern, 36 leaves of grey heavy card stock, photographs mounted both sides, captioned throughout. Some wear to extremities of both volumes but overall in very good condition. Unique handmade "magazine" constructed by a group of ladies of the Scottish county set, to be borrowed (at a nominal rate) by a select group of recipients, to help raise funds for the war effort, rather in the manner of a circulating library; a printed receipt shows that the donation of £1 5 shillings went to the Mesopotamia Comforts Fund. The moving spirit here was Barbara Emily Smythe (b.1899) - daughter of Katherine Jane Bagot (1859-1952) and Lt-Col. David Murray Smythe (1850-1928) – and she features prominently in the accompanying photograph album. She was assisted by the three Misses Drummond, Miss Arbuthnot and Miss Newdigate. There were clearly a number of "issues" of "The Cavalier" and this one features stories and poems. One story, "Robin's Wish", concludes by noting that "We never saw Cousin Paul again. A year later he was killed in the Great War – fighting on the Russian front (I can't spell the name of the place he was killed at)" – this is followed by a handmade Christmas card entitled "Christmas Leave", showing a young man in naval uniform sitting by the fireside surrounded by children – "Cousin Paul" was perhaps lost on the North Russia convoys. Another relation, Charles Stewart, is revealed in an acrostic poem, as is Latakia, the principal Syrian port on the Mediterranean (which links to the Mesopotamian campaign). Another poem ("The Ballad of a 'Diable Bleu'") sings the praises of the French Chasseurs Alpin – no doubt a rather romantic figure in the minds of these Scottish ladies. The rear pastedown of The Cavalier carries the names of some 15 members of the fund-raising circle, with addresses in Perth, Errol, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Carlisle, Canterbury, Nuneaton, Hampton-on-Thames, Sunningdale, and four in London (including Lady Hilda Murray and Lady Betty Hay); these each have a pocket made from hessian strips, explained on the Editorial page: "No reader must keep the 'Cavalier' longer than two days. If kept longer ½d. must be paid for every extra day. Please put six penny stamps in the pocket under your name, & send it on to the next address. The money thus made goes to War Funds & the Queens Hospital for Children". Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from Barbara E. Smythe to an unnamed recipient: "I hope this will reach you safely & will interest you. The illustrations are often better than in that no: - I was rather in a hurry! Ever & your affect: niece Barbara E. Smythe" (dated 5 September 1917, Moulin Almond, Perth). "The Cavalier" contents: 183 pp. (paginated): Editorial details, 3pp, one full=page coloured "Christmas Greetings"; "Robin's Wish" (story) 67 pp, 4 full-page colour illustrations; "Christmas Leave" hand-painted card; "Grandmama" (story) 20 pp, one full=page colour illustration; "The Fair City" (poem) 1 page, one full=page colour illustration; "The Ballad of a 'Diable Bleu'" (poem) 6pp, one full-page colour illustration; "The Cavalier Club" (letter from the Editor) 2pp; "Father Christmas in Charge" (story) 17 pp; "Acrostic" (poem) one page; "Mist" (poem) one page; "The Passing Year" (poem) 5pp; "Night" (poem) one page; printed receipt from the Mesopotamia Comforts Fund (dated 25 November 1916) acknowledging receipt of £1 5 shillings; "Fire-Flame" (story) 54 pp, 2 full-page illustrations (one colour, one black & white); "Answer to the Acrostic" half page. The extensively-captioned photograph album offers a captivating panorama of upper middle class life during the 1920s, concentrated around a well-connected Scottish county family: there are approximately 450 original black and white photographs (largely 70 x 45 mm) of the Smythe family and their friends and relations covering the period from autumn 1924 to April 1930; including mages of their home at Moulin Almond, near Methven, Perthshire, holidaying in Tenerife and in Dumfries & Galloway, attending hunt balls, weddings, shooting parties, the summer school of music at St Andrews (including a number of images of composer Harold Craxton (1885-1971), father of the painter John Craxton), curling on Methven Loch, one snap of Prince von Weikersheim and Lord Edward and Gay Gleichen, scenes at the 1929 general election (which resulted in a hung parliament; it was known as the "Flapper Election" because women aged between 21 and 29 were allowed to vote for the first time; images here of family friend and Conservative MP for Perth, Noel Skelton (1880-1935)). An attractive and poignant memento of the Home Front during the Great War.

         Passed by the Censor.

?Le Havre: , 1916. Folio. 63 sheets (470 × 312 mm) loose in khaki portfolio as issued; title leaf, "préface" in facsimile holograph, contents leaf printed in red and black, 30 coloured lithographic portraits from Woog's pencil and crayon sketches as listed, all but one accompanied by a leaf with a humorous calligraphic poem within a scroll, one such leaf covering two portraits, an additional unidentified portrait, and a "finis" leaf with image of a crashing Zeppelin. The portfolio a little soiled, spotted and nibbled on the flaps, but remains sound and attractive in a utilitarian fashion, the contents clean and entirely sound, overall very good. Extremely uncommon, no location on Copac, OCLC identifies two copies - LoC and Princeton, both listed under the incorrect name of "Raymond Wood" - a copy also in the Le Havre Municipal Archives noting 32 plates, and suggesting a limitation of 115 copies. Attractive collection of skilfully rendered portraits - some sensitively naturalistic, others with a touch of sympathetic satire - of British and French personalities at the British Base Depôt at Le Havre where Woog was attached as a liaison officer from 1915 until the end of the war. One of Woog's colleagues on the Mission Militaire Française, here portrayed as "Herzog - Adjutant Interpète" is better known as André Maurois (born Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog), who recorded his own experiences in the highly successful comic novel Les silences du colonel Bramble (1926) in which the author appears in the guise of the French interpreter Aurelle. Maurois recalled Woog in his autobiography I Remember, I Remember (1942), as "a talented painter and charming companion" (p. 120). In fact, Woog was the first person to read Bramble in manuscript and encouraged Maurois to publish (see Jean Bothorel's biography of the publisher Bernard Grasset). The wraps of the first edition featured a portrait by Woog of Col. Asser, base commander at Le Havre, representing Bramble. A full-length portrait of Asser is inevitably the first in the portfolio. The majority of the portraits are accompanied by witty rhymes composed by Lieut., Staniforth, Assistant Provost Marshal, set within elaborate scrolls with banderolles, the work of H. Mostyn-Prichard, Cox's agent on the base, both of whom also feature among the portraits. In his preface Woog explains that he had no intention of publishing these sketches "but my victims insisted that their friends ought to be given the chance to see the whole in book form". Raymond Woog (1875-1949) was born in Paris, studied with Gustave Moreau, and became a full member of the Société National des Beaux-Arts in 1911, exhibiting widely until his death in 1949, he has works in the Musée de Roubaix, Musée du Luxembourg, the Ministère de l'Éducation nationale, and the French embassy in Berlin. A highly engaging series of portraits, surprisingly well produced considering the exigencies of the time - being printed on excellent heavy stock paper – and presented here in an appealing "sur la campagne" portfolio.

Autograph signed letter; two pages on Northampton General Hospital head note paper, dated 12th July 1916. Together with photographs of Keeble and his wife and a small number of documents including Demobilization Certificate. 62033 Private later Acting Sergeant Walter Keeble 2nd Battalion Middlesex Regiment went over the top on July the 1st 1916, taking part in perhaps the worst days action ever undertaken by the British Army. Advancing over Mash Valley near Ovilliers he was caught between two German lines, wounded on the 2nd he is left lying out with no food and little water until his rescue on the 7th. His account contained in what appears to be an uncensored letter to his wife describes his experiences "No food or water only rain water that I caught in my helmet" "The best bit of luck was I had no rifle or else I should not have been here now". "I think my poor old Batt. was wiped out" In fact the 2nd Battalion had around 650 casualties on the 1st July 1916. Together with small framed photographs of Walter, contemporary group postcard photo of his unit, note to him from a Lieutenant J.Kenneth Grayson and a photographic medallion with a small colour tinted photograph him in uniform and his wife on the reverse. The photograph of him and his wife, probably taken towards the end of the war shows her wearing the medallion. Surely an almost unique record of endurance, particularly unusual in being recorded first hand just a week later. All items contained in a specially made archive box.

Arrangement of the Chinese Characters according to an Alphabetical System with Japanese Dictionary of 8000 Characters and List of 22000 Charakters.

Tokyo, Kobunsha, 1916. 15, (546) pp. Green clothbound (original) volume with gold-embossed title along spine and blind-tooled publisher`s mark on front. Illustrated endpaper with floral ornamentation. Famous study of Russian Orientalist, Sinologist and scholar of Japanese Studies Otto Julius Rosenberg (1888 - 1919) on a system of classification of Chinese characters. Rosenberg studied from 1906 to 1911 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of St. Petersburg, lectured by, among others, the founder of the Russian school of Indology, Sergei Oldenburg (1863 - 1934). During a study stay in Bonn in 1909, Rosenberg befriended Hermann Jacobi (1850-1937), the greatest Indologist and Sanskrit scholar of that time. As part of an internship at the Department of Oriental Languages (SOS) at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität two years later, he also befriended the German linguist and scholar of Japanese studies, Rudolf Lange (1850 - 1933). From 1912 to 1916 he studied Buddhist Literature and Tradition at the University of Tokyo. Here Rosenberg became acquainted with the then leading Buddhist Scholars of Japan. In the course of this stay, he explored the school of Zen Buddhism as one of the first Western scientists and also became an expert for Japanese and Chinese characters used in the writing of Chinese and Japanese. In 1924, his work \"The problems of Buddhist philosophy\" was published in German. Based on ideas of Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist Vasily Vasilyev (1818 - 1900), Rosenberg developed a method of classification of Chinese and Japanese characters. He published the results of his research in a dictionary which was published in English and Japanese and which formed the basis of the so-called \"Four Corner Method\", which is still employed today in the creation of Chinese and Japanese dictionaries. This volume is extremely rare and, according to the world`s largest bibliographic database, WorldCat, it is only found in six libraries worldwide. The copy offered here was purchased from a Japanese private collection. Boards slightly stained (esp. back cover), otherwise good copy of an extremely rare and fragile item of considerable scientific work with regards to the disclosure of far-eastern language systems.
