In Northern Mists. Arctic exploration in early times. Translated by Arthur G. Chater

London: William Heinemann 1911 - First English edition, 2 volumes, 4to. Coloured frontispieces tipped in plus black and white illustrations in the text. Original blue cloth, gilt spine titles, upper covers with a gilt vignette and title and rules in black, damp stain to the edge of the spine of volume I, otherwise a very good set still with their d.w.'s, these showing some light marking and stains to the spines, otherwise sound. The larger version of the two binding variants with the title in black to the upper covers. The wrappers were seemingly produced for the smaller binding, hence looking slightly too small for this set. Nevertheless an unusual survival.

Das Graphische Werk Emil Noldes bis 1910

Julius Bard. Hardcover. Berlin, 1911. Quarto, 140 pp. The first volume in the series. Original woodcuts throughout. Number 391 of an edition of 435. A very good minus copy with excellent, bright contents. Chip to paper at head of spine of about 1/2 x 1.5 inches, affecting the lettering at the end of the title. Very tiny creases to corners of some upper pages, closed tear to outer paper on the lower portion of the rear outer hinge of the spine, very faint intermittent foxing to contents. Nolde married Danish actress Ada Vilstrup in 1902 and moved to Berlin, where he would meet collector Gustav Schiefler and artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, both of whom would advocate his work later in life. He spent a brief time between 1906-1907 as a member of the revolutionary expressionist group Die Brucke (The Bridge), and as a member of the Berlin Secession in 1908-1910, but he eventually left or was expelled from both of these groups - foreshadowing of the difficulty Nolde had maintaining relationships with the organizations to which he belonged. He had achieved some fame by this time and exhibited with Kandinsky's Der Blaue Reiter group in 1912, supporting himself through his art. This book contains beautiful Expressionist woodcuts by Nolde. A very nice example. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. . Very Good. 1911. First Edition.

Manuscript China Letter Book, Contemporary to the Chinese Revolution, Made By by a German Imperial Navy Engineer.

China, 1911-1912 - Tsingtao [Qingdao], Hong Kong, Amoy [Xiamen], Wusung [Shanghai], Chefoo [Yantai], Yokohama, Hakodate, Port Arthur, 1911-1912. Journal of manuscript retained copies of letters and diary notes made by German naval engineer H.L.A. Heine while serving onboard Scharnhorst, during and after the Chinese Revolution, with a few hand sketched diagrams within the text. Together with two pencil drawings of nautical scenes inscribed by the artists and measuring approximately 14,5 x 10 cm, and one black and white photograph of a group of German Navy officers perhaps including Heine himself, the photograph measuring approximately 11 x 8 cm. Qto. Approximately 390 pages in manuscript, written in ink single sided onto thin tissue leafs, a scant few integral blanks. Text is almost entirely in German. Volume measures approximately 22,5 x 27 cm, blue cloth boards titled in English and Chinese to front "Foreign Letters: The Terminus Stores. Kowloon." Spine reinforced with tape, a red wax seal cemented to rear board, otherwise in very good condition, internally clean and bright. SMS Scharnhorst was an armored cruiser of the Imperial German Navy, the lead ship of her class, assigned to the German East Asia Squadron based in Tsingtao in 1909. After arriving, she replaced the cruiser Fürst Bismarck as the squadron flagship, a position she would hold for the rest of her career. Over the next five years, she went on several tours of various Asian ports to show the flag for Germany. She frequently carried the squadron commanders to meet with Asian heads of state and was present in Japan for the coronation of the Taisho Emperor 30 July 1912. Attached to the China Station of the German Navy and spending some two years at this post, Hans Ludwig Adolf Heine, 'marine ingenieur, SMS Scharnhorst,' wrote several letters, to family and friends, and also to notable business firms. All of the correspondences are dated, with location also given. Several of the letters were written at Tsingtao, being the ship's base port in China. To demonstrate German presence in the Far East, also to augment political and trade relations, frequent tours were made along the coast of China to the Japanese islands. Surely, he would have observed some fascinating communities and situations. For example, he was in Port Arthur [now called Lüshunkou District] on 5 September 1911 only six years after the siege which took place during the Russo-Japanese War. Yokohama was also a port of call later the same month. In December 1911 he is in Hakodate, Japan. He was also in Japan after the death of Emperor Meiji the Great, when his successor Emperor Taisho was given the throne. At least one voyage in 1912 was made as far as Vladivostok in Russia, during which an eight-page letter was penned and contains references to the Russian city, as well as Peking, and torpedo boats in Tientsin [Tianjin]. From January to May 1912 he wrote from Wusung or while anchored off the Wusung Küste [coast]. At the time, Wusung was a separate small port town; it has since become a sub-district of Baoshan in northern Shanghai.

Mexican Cooking. The Flavor of the Twentieth Century. That Real Mexican Tang

[San Antonio, TX]: U.S. Print and Litho Co, 1911. Tall, stapled booklet, 44 pages. Illustrated in color. Ads. Very early edition of the first Mexican-American cookbook published in in English. Gebhardt published this little recipe booklet to help spread an understanding of Mexican-American cooking in order that they might grow demand for their products. The recipes claim to drawn from the "most famous chefs in Old Mexico". The dating of this cookbook remains a bit hazy, with Andrew Smith, in his introduction to the Applewood reprint stating "about 1908", Bob Brown says, "before 1910", and all copies appearing in OCLC state either 1910 or 1911. According to the archives of the company at University of Texas San Antonio, Gebhardt received a meat license in 1911, allowing them to produce canned "chili meat". This booklet includes an ad for chili meat, as well as some recipes for the same, and so it is at least as late as 1911. Some discoloration and a edge-chipping to the color-printed wrappers, otherwise very good. [OCLC locates ten copies (all with 44 pages and with the color ads); Brown 4202; not in Cagle].

Ninth Impression. 12mo. 74pp. Frederick Meech was the family butler for Edward Henry Harriman and accompanied him on his scientic expedition to catalog the flora and fauna of the Alaska coastline. Many prominent scientists and naturalists, including John Muir, went on the expedition, aboard the luxuriously refitted 250-foot steamer George W. Elder. Tan cloth with brown lettering in the scarce publisher's printed dustjacket with an ad for "Our National Parks" printed to the rear panel. Near fine (minor wear to extremities) in very good dustjacket (flap corners clipped; 3/8 x 1 1/4" missing to spine head, not affecting the title; some chipping & short closed tears to extremities; light soiling). John Muir's true story of what happened on an Alaskan glacier with a dog named Stickeen, in 1880, is one of Muir's best-known writings, and is now considered a classic dog story; this book made more special with John Muir's personal inscription. Of Stickeen Muir wrote, "I have known many dogs, and many a story I could tell of their wisdom and devotion; but to none do I owe so much as to Stickeen. At first the least promising and least known of my dog-friends, he suddenly became the best known of them all. Our storm-battle for life brought him to light, and through him as through a window I have ever since been looking with deeper sympathy into all my fellow mortals." (BAL 1759; Kimes 281).

         POEMS

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, 1911. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 500 COPIES. This is the first collection of poetry from Rupert Brooke (1887-1915), who perhaps best personified the doomed youth of the Great War. The son of a schoolmaster at Rugby, Brooke was educated there and at Cambridge, writing poetry from his early years. According to DNB, "during his years at Cambridge, influenced by the Jacobean poets and dramatists that he studied, Brooke refined the style of his poetry. The lush extravagance learned from the decadents gave way to a harder-edged diction, metaphor which sometimes tested the boundaries of Edwardian good taste, and a penchant for syllogism. He showed a particular felicity in his use of the sonnet and rhymed octosyllabics. The subject matter of the poems is dominated by conflicts in which youth and innocence are preferred to age and experience, mind is valued above the distrusted body, and the ‘eternal' is often aspired to at the expense of the transitory." Brooke's second and last book of poems, "1914," was published posthumously, and contained his epitaph for a generation lost to war: "If I should die, think only this of me / That there's some corner of a foreign field / That is for ever England." For Brooke, that was the Greek island Skyros, where he succumbed to septicemia on the way to Gallipolli.. 190 x 125 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 7/8"). viii, 87, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 500 COPIES. " ... my adventure in the ice ... " Walter Wellman (1858 -1934) was an American journalist, explorer, aeronaut, founder of the Cincinnati Evening Post in 1879, and after 1884 became the Washington correspondent for the Chicago Herald, and then the Times-Herald. Here, he submits his manuscript to an editor: " ... You will find herewith manuscript and photographs for the next installments. Possibly there will be time enough to have one of your artists make a spirited sketch of an incident described in the first part of the story - my adventure in the ice ... " Wellman's "adventures in ice" probably refers to one of his two unsuccessful overland expeditions to the North Pole, in 1893 and 1898. Wellman became convinced by his adventures that the surest way to the Pole was by airship, and he subsequently organized three such pioneering expeditions.

Stickeen: The Story of a Dog (SIGNED by John Muir))

New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1911. INSCRIBED "To Frederick W. Meech/With sincere regards/John Muir/May 30, 1911." Ninth Impression. 12mo.
