         THE TALE OF TIMMY TIPTOES

1911. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. Original light brown paper boards with arched pictorial onlay. First Edition of these adventures of Timmy Tiptoes (and his wife Goody), grey squirrels trying to get nuts collected and stored up for the oncoming winter. Timmy is wrongly accused of stealing other squirrels' nuts and is thrown through a tree-hole into his and Goody's nut storehouse -- where he gets sidetracked and eats so many of the nuts that he becomes too fat to get out. The presence of chipmunks and a bear in this tale have led to speculation that the author had American children in mind when she wrote and illustrated this book.~Customers could buy TIMMY TIPTOES in either light brown or dark green paper boards, priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth, at 1/6. This copy is in light brown boards, and is in very good-plus condition (very slight wear at the spine ends); the half-title bears a "Nov. 1911" mother-to-son gift inscription. Linder pp 208-209 and p. 429; Quinby 20.

More ghost stories of an antiquary.

London Edward Arnold 1911 - First edition, 8vo, 24pp. advertisements, contemporary ownership inscriptions to front endpapers, original cloth with title and bat designed blocked in black, some minor marking and edge-wear. The sequel to the author's Ghost Stories (1904), a ghoulish collection of tales primarily designed to be read aloud in the traditional fashion. Montague Rhodes James was a respected specialist in apocryphal writings and medieval manuscript, with an impressive career amongst the dusty halls of academia, not least as director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, administrator for King's College and Provost of Eton. However, he is primarily remembered for ghost stories such as these, with their wonderfully eerie atmosphere and malignant spirits. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He also established schools and translated, as noted previously, several works into Chinese.    Of this edition, WorldCat locates complete copies at three U.S. institutions (NYPL, Stanford, Johns Hopkins) and apparently partial copies at four others (University of Chicago, Princeton, Rutgers, UVa).          THE HAMPDENSHIRE WONDER. Signed By The Author

Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, London 1911 - This rarity of science fiction is signed by the author. One of the first novels to involve a Wunderkind. The child in it, Victor Stott, is the son of a famous cricket player. This origin is perhaps a reference to H.G. Well's father Joseph Wells. The novel concerns his progress from infant to almost preternaturally brilliant child. Victor Stott is subtly deformed to allow for his powerful brain. Bound in the preferred dark green boards with bold gilt spine lettering. Author's second novel. A very good plus to near fine book with the original dust jacket, also near fine with shallow chipping at spine crown. A very bright example of this rare jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Joseph Henry Lynch (1911-1989) - Mid 20th Century Oil, Farrier.

Mid 20th Century - DescriptionAn impressive oil painting by Joseph Henry Lynch (1911-1989) depicting a farrier outside J. Edwards stables shoeing a horse. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with tongue and dart detailing. Signed. On canvas on stretchers. ConditionIn fine condition.BiographyJoseph Henry Lynch (1911-1989) was a successful British artist of the mid-20th century. There is little information to be found on Lynch himself and he destroyed many of his original paintings before he died in 1989. He is best known for his sultry and fantastical paintings of women created in the 1960s, many of which feature in the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film, A Clockwork Orange. His most iconic work is “Tina” (1961), which featured in both Kubrick’s film and on the front cover of Edwyn Collin’s LP, A Girl Like You (1995). Lynch was also an accomplished landscape artist and his bold use of colour and line, along with the slightly stylised nature of his portraits, reflect the vibrancy and energy of the Sixties. Lynch’s prints were originally sold in outlets like Boots and Woolworth’s: “Tina” and the rest of Lynch’s female portraits were purchased in their thousands, becoming a household staple for the rest of the Sixties and Seventies. They are now popular with collectors and considered key pieces for any kitsch, vintage domestic interior. Size: X-Large (>60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism Weight: 18000.00g [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Photo Album]: The Goings on at Briarcliff College

New York 1911 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Black textured cloth over paper boards. Contains 87 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Album is very good with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an unnamed woman while she was attending Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York from 1910 to 1911. Briarcliff College was originally founded as Mrs. Dow's School for Girls in 1903 at Briarcliff Lodge and by 1933 had become a junior college. The album shows the year of 1910 to 1911 with photos of the women participating in a cooking class, various theatrical performances, and posing around the campus. The theater was a huge part of the women's time at the college and featured many historic reenactments using Native American scenes and Middle Eastern costumes. One photo shows the women in various costumes, some of them dressed as men, clowns, and one in black face, with a hand drawn poster that says "Roasted Puppies" in the background. The women are also shown enjoying the seasons from ice skating in winter to picnicking in spring. One photo displays the women as a group playing mandolins and guitars. Another photo shows a small group of girls sitting in a field with rifles in the foreground.A nice collection of photographs representing a women's college in 1910 displaying the creativity and quirkiness of its students.
