         Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven.

      New York: Harper & Brothers, 1909. First edition of the last work published by Twain during his life. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece, tissue guard. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small chips to the extremities. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. Although not published until 1907 in Harper's Magazine, followed by a slim book version with some revisions in 1909, the story was quite old. The original manuscript dated back perhaps as far as 1868, and an 1873 version has survived. The story was revised several times, and chapters 3 and 4 of the manuscript became the Harper's story. Longer versions of the manuscript have subsequently been published, including one edited by Dixon Wector which appeared as part of Report from Paradise (1952), and in part 1 of Mark Twain's Quarrel with Heaven: "Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven" And Other Sketches" (Ray B. Browne, ed., 1970). Twain claimed that the story in its early version was a satire of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward's The Gates Ajar, a very popular novel published in 1868.

(7 3/4 x 5"). xv, [i], 376 pp. CHARMING VELLUCENT BINDING BY CEDRIC CHIVERS OF BATH (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), upper cover with central medallion depicting a coach rollicking along a country lane, this surrounded by a collar of inlaid mother-of-pearl, and with a painted frame of garlands crowned with an inlaid mother-of-pearl horseshoe, smooth spine with titling and similar garland design, gilt-ruled turn-ins, vellum doublures, marbled free endpapers, top edge gilt. With 214 illustrations in the text by Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton. Front flyleaf with ink signature of B. Whipham. A touch of soiling to spine, final leaf with small hole affecting a couple of letters, otherwise a very fine copy, quite clean and bright inside and out, with none of the usual splaying to the vellum boards. First published in 1883, this nostalgic look at the highways and byways of pre-railroad Britain is the most popular work by William Outram Tristram, offered here in a pleasing Chivers vellucent binding with a lively vignette based on the book illustrations. Tristram (fl. 1883-1911) takes the reader down seven major coach routes--the Bath, Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover, York, and Holyhead roads--and regales us with anecdotes about the inns, sights, and characters one might meet along the way. Anyone who has read 19th century novels that include journeys by coach will appreciate this opportunity to see what such a trip might have been like for characters such as Austen's Elizabeth Bennet. Charming illustrations like the ones in the present volume made the name of illustrator Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), who, according to Houfe, "created an idyllic world of stage coaches, sedan chairs, feasts and port wine." Cedric Chivers (1853-1929) established binding premises in his native Bath after an inspiring visit to the Paris Exhibition of 1878, and a short time later, after hearing a lecture by Cyril Davenport on the 18th century painted vellum bindings of Edwards of Halifax, he began producing his own work in this tradition, creating what he called the "vellucent" binding. The innovative part of these bindings, as seen here, was accomplished by rendering vellum transparent, then placing it over painted pieces of paper, thereby protecting the surface of the paper from soiling and abrasion. Prideaux says that the process achieves the effect of enriched enamel. The cream color of the paper boards on our copy gives it the look of a painting on ivory, the pastel hues employed are especially pleasing, and the coaching scene is much more animated than many Chivers designs.          The Key of Solomon the King (Clavicula Salomonis) Now First Translated and edited from Ancient MSS in the British Museum

      Kegan Paul Trench Trubner & Co, London 1909 - Hardcover, Quarto. (8" x 10 1/4") viii (+ ii) + 126pp Original cloth boards with contrasting buckram spine, lettered in gilt. Teg., others uncut. 15 full page plates depicting sigils, talismans etc., 7 of which are printed on coloured paper (blue). The "Key of Solomon" was long accounted as amongst 'the most famous, or infamous, of all magical textbooks' The Mather's translation was the true first published edition of this famous work, the seventeenth century Paris edition being both corrupt and woefully incomplete. Mathers is famous as one of the founders and leaders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as an occult scholar, and as the long-time nemesis of his former pupil, Aleister Crowley. Mather's based his edition of the "Key of Solomon" on 7 manuscripts then housed in the British Museum. It was first published by Redway in 1889, in a limited edition of 500 copies. This presumably sold out over the next two decades, and thus in 1909 the book was reprinted by Kegan Paul. As far as is known, no textual alterations were made between editions, although the pagination varies, due to changes in layout. The print run of the Second Edition is unknown, but it must have been small, as it is just as scarce as the First Edition. Cloth rubbed overall with some chafing to head and tail of spine, cloth starting to split at places in gutters but the boards are still firmly attached, corners bumped and chafed with some fraying, small tidy bookplate and contemporary bookshop sticker on front endpapers, endpapers unevenly browned, some toning to the pages, otherwise internally clean and solid. Overall a VG copy of a scarce and important edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      London: William Heinemann, 1909. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, quarto (24x18cm), pp.xlviii; 372; pp.xvi; 419; [1]. Portrait of E. H. Shackleton as frontispiece to first volume, with portrait of the Northern Party at the South Magnetic Pole to second volume. Both are protected with captioned tissue guards. Generously illustrated throughout with photographic plates and diagrams, in addition to several plates in colour. Half dark blue morocco, cloth sides, gilt titles, t.e.g., folding maps in pouch at rear of vol. II.Light spotting, exterior unmarked. A very good copy in an attractive recent leather binding. A comprehensive work, filled with a mass of maps, photographs and sketches which chronicle the expedition. This item truly embodies the golden age of polar exploration. Although the expedition team was unable to attain its goal of reaching the South Pole, Shackleton and his companions reached 88° 23' S, a point only 180 kilometres (112 mi) from the Pole. Accomplishments also included: the first ascent of Mount Erebus, the location of the Magnetic South Pole by Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David and MacKay (January 16, 1909), and the discovery of the Beardmore Glacier passage (named after Shackleton's patron). The group was the first to cross the Trans-Antarctic mountain range, and to set foot on the South Polar Plateau. Subsisting on half-rations, Shackleton discovered the party's salvation - a letter declaring that Nimrod would sail on February 26, 1909. In response, the crew burnt the camp to attract the departing ship's attention. The plan succeeded, and on March 1, 1909, Shackleton departed for home and returned to the United Kingdom a hero. He was knighted for reaching the furthest south of any human at that time. Regarding the failure to reach the South Pole, Shackleton remarked to his wife: "Better a live donkey than a dead lion.". It would be three more years before Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first to reach the South Pole, followed shortly by Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition.

      Wright Lorimer, San Francisco 1909 - Walter M. S. [Myron Smith] Lowell, American stage actor and playwright, author of famous religious play The Shepherd King and star of the Broadway production (playing David). Lorimer, a Colgate College (Massachusetts) graduate, Oxford post-grad, Dearborn Stock Company of Chicago theatre member, then surprisingly: Pennsylvania baptist preacher, marriage and a gig as a poultry farmer .then 15-year old Zelda ran away with him in Michigan, all that before the iconic role of King David. Six years plus, the nation loved him and his stardom rose. After wide notoriety, a vaudeville crestfall and the absence of a follow-up chapter of success, he committed suicide at the age of 38 years, by putting his head in the gas oven of a boarding house kitchen on 124 West Sixty-fifth Street .His personal letterhead reads: Grasp Thine Opportunities, showing a hand grasping three arrows. Three letters from what likely are hotels in Northern California, wherein he writes to Estelle Carpenter, Decemeber 14, 1909, 777 Turk St., San Francisco: 'My Dear Miss Carpenter' after visiting her unusual and welcoming home. You must know that I see many homes in a season of travel, homes where money has been spent with a lavish hand - some arranged with an artistic taste, some crowded with valuable decorations with so little sense that one is uncomfortable - but your home! The memory of the sweet odor - the quiet - the presence of the spirit of something unnameable but most satisfying will long linger in my memory. He offers her a box at the Garrick Theatre (program laid in), invites her to come, perhaps closing night, and fill it with friends. (To Estelle Carpenter, Q of H) January 3, 1910, Sacramento: To The Carpenters: My own dear friends, just a line to tell you how I miss you and wish I could run in to dinner. The memory of your loving kindness is sweeter than all the flowers that grow in all the gardens of California and your home is 'Sunshine" even in stormy weather. Jan 10-15th I shall be in Los Angeles and hope to have a line from each of you. Writes of manager/advance man.          Photo Album]: "Round the World 1905-6 Manchuria and S. Africa 1908-9" Military Observer

      1909 - Folio. Measuring 11" x 14". Half leather and pebbled black cloth over boards with gilt decorations. Contains 328 albumen photographs measuring between 3" x 4" and 4" x 6", with captions. Album is very good with foxing on the pages, worn edges, and a few images cut out otherwise with near fine photographs.A photo album compiled by Major General Richard Bannatyne Allason on a "round the world" trip spanning 1905 to 1909, from his time as "military observer" in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War. The album begins with a photo of a large house with the caption "starting from New Mile Chase, Ascot." Following this Allason entered Canada and crossed the country by train on a C.P.R. Engine and photographed the rail stations, attendants, and conductors. From Canada they boarded the RMS Empress of India. These photos show the passengers of the ship, Captain Beetham (who had become commander in 1905), and his first officer.After the travel photos the album continues with images of the Japanese 1st Army in Kin-Ka-Ko under the leadership of General Kuroki Tamemoto. There are several images of Kuroki with foreign military attaches dating from June, 1905. These photos show the 1st Army in candids and portraits around their barracks and include interiors of the quarters and of the grounds. Of interest are multiple images of Kuroki's Chief of Staff Major General Fujii Shigeta, including one print signed by Fujii, and a photograph of John J. Pershing (Pershing served as the American military attache attached to Kuroki's 1st Army in Manchuria from March to September). Allason also captured images of the local non-military including a "Manchurian family doing weekly washing of both clothes and persons." Another section of photos shows Army transport horses with one captioned, "specimen of Manchurian 'wheelpony' and harness in country cart -- so much used by Japanese army." Allason featured numerous photos of the horses used by the army labeling each one and what they were used for. One group of photos shows local smiths shoeing the horses, which involved tying the horse down and working on him, "the usual method of shoeing horses and mules" according to Allason. He also took portrait photos of various soldiers depicting their gear and uniform and captioning the photo with rank and outpost.Allason also photographed men out in the field displaying their artillery as well as methods of hiding from the enemy. He features photos of the "telegraph section in our riffraff," machine guns, and a cart with a ladder. One photo shows two men behind a haystack and reads, "how mere monts were concealed from view." Another shows a man labeled "a look out" on a hill. The next section documents the Japanese Mountain Battery 12th Division 1st Army. These photos show numerous carts with guns and close ups of boxes of ammunition as well as a column of pack horses and men in "marching order." Many of the gun used were captured by the Japanese including one featured here which reads, "captured Russian Field Gun," and is photographed from every angle with a description of the mechanisms and how it was used. One page is titled, "Japanese artillery in action," and depicts the men loading and firing their field guns. The battery often used pontoon boats to transport their heavy equipment to various locales and these are featured in photos depicting their construction. The boats are seen ferrying with the caption, "used as a raft [it carries] one gun and wagon or 24 men with kits."While traveling Allason documented the cultures of the countries he was visiting. During his Manchurian leg he photographed the "tomb of the Emperor of Manchuria" which featured the "memorial chapel" to Emperor Taiso" from about 1600 A.D. He photographed temples, local homes, and the Imperial Palace. One photo reads, "house in Palace -- shows some weeds in the courtyard and a porcelain roof." He photographed memorials and grave sites including a "temporary obelisk to fallen Japanese soldier

      New York: Harper & Brothers, 1909. First edition of the last work published by Twain during his life. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece, tissue guard. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small chips to the extremities. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. Although not published until 1907 in Harper's Magazine, followed by a slim book version with some revisions in 1909, the story was quite old. The original manuscript dated back perhaps as far as 1868, and an 1873 version has survived. The story was revised several times, and chapters 3 and 4 of the manuscript became the Harper's story. Longer versions of the manuscript have subsequently been published, including one edited by Dixon Wector which appeared as part of Report from Paradise (1952), and in part 1 of Mark Twain's Quarrel with Heaven: "Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven" And Other Sketches" (Ray B. Browne, ed., 1970). Twain claimed that the story in its early version was a satire of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward's The Gates Ajar, a very popular novel published in 1868.

Alfred Harmsworth, Viscount Northcliffe (1865-1922), proprietor of the Daily Mail, was, like Shackleton, of Anglo-Irish background. Northcliffe took a keen interest in Polar exploration, he was an important sponsor of the Discovery Expedition of 1901-04, on which Shackleton served as Third Officer, and the earlier Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to the Arctic in 1894-97. The Daily Mail played a key role in the promotion of Shackleton's iconic status: "When Shackleton returned to civilization [following the Nimrod expedition], he was eager to get word to the Daily Mail, with which he had a contract for exclusive rights to the story. Before the ship returned to Lyttelton harbor [New Zealand], Shackleton slipped in at Stewart Island and sent a lengthy wire to his newspaper. Within days word of his accomplishment spread around the world. Aided by the slant of the Daily Mail, which proclaimed Shackleton the conqueror of the South Pole. Since he had nearly found the route [to the Pole] and determined that the pole was on that lofty plain [the Antarctic Plateau], Shackleton instantly became famous" (T. H. Baughman, Shackleton of the Antarctic, 2009, pp. 41-42). The Heart of the Antarctic is Shackleton's account of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907–9 (Nimrod) and "remains one of the half-dozen greatest polar accounts" (ibid.). "Their sledge journey to the south magnetic pole was one of the three foremost achievements of this expedition. The other two achievements were, first, the ascent and survey of Mount Erebus (12,448 feet), the active volcano on Ross Island and, second, the southern sledge journey, which reached within 100 miles of the south pole" (ODNB). Shackleton's diary entries for the latter, published here "virtually unaltered" constitute "one of the most compelling narratives in the Antarctic literature" (Rosove p.386). The expedition established Shackleton as a "bona fide English hero," but the success of the book did little to alleviate "the financial problems left to him by the expedition" (Books on Ice). Publisher's blue cloth, titles, designs and rule in silver on the spine and front boards, top page edges gilt. Shackleton gained fame as a member of Capt. Robert F. Scott's first expedition (1901-1902), and in 1907 came within 100 miles of the South Pole; a record at the time. This expedition of Shackleton's was the first to reach the Magnetic South Pole, the first to ascend the volcano Mt. Erebus, and substantially added to the knowledge of the geology and biology of the region. Three folding maps and one folding panorama at the rear of volume two, all Fine. An attractive set. Very Good plus or better with no dust jackets (presumably as issued), much nicer than usually found. 'I ran away the day I was born' Peter Pan Pauline Chase. Pauline Chase (May 20, 1885 - March 15, 1962) was an American actress who performed on the stage in both the United States and the UK. She is known for her extended run in the title role of British productions of Peter Pan.She was born Ellen Pauline Matthew Bliss in Washington May 20, 1885. She began acting at the age of 15. She played one of the Lost Boys in the debut of Peter Pan in London in 1904. She was later selected by producer Charles Frohman and playwright J M Barrie for the title role, which she played from 1906-1913. She was J M Barrie's personal favorite for the role of Peter Pan. She retired from the stage after the Christmas run of Peter Pan which ended in 1913 to marry banker Captain Alexander Victir Drummond. They had three children.She was said to have had an affair with explorer Robert Falcon Scott before he was married.She died in Royal Tunbridge Wells, England in 1962. Book is very good++ and bright. Substantial quarto in recent full vellum gilt, with 23 colour lithographs on decorative mounts, text pages also with decoration and ornamentation. Margins yellowed, occasional light marks and spots to contents, light folds and occasional spots and marks to some tissues, all 23 entertaining lithographs in fine condition.          Interesting Signed Photograph with Two Autograph Inscriptions

      - An especially interesting signed photograph of the great Hungarian-born American violinist.  Image size 138 x 90 mm.; overall size 230 x 150 mm. With autograph inscriptions in black ink, in Hungarian, one to lower margin of photograph: "To Dr. Lipót Sebestyén in remembrance of our seeing each other again (1909-1928!)" and the other to lower margin of mount: "To András Sebestyén in remembrance of our conversation on the old days in October 1963 Joseph Szigeti."Mount slightly worn and browned; small tear to upper margin and stains to lower; remnants of brown paper to verso. According to the Hungarian Jewish Encyclopedia (Magyar Zsidó Lexikon, ed. Péter Újvári, 1929), there was a municipal prefect named Lipót Sebestyén in the city of Lugos in 1928."[Szigeti] became a pupil of Jen Hubay at the Budapest Academy. After his London début in 1907, [he] remained in Britain until 1913. Szigeti settled in the USA in 1940 and became a citizen in 1951. He played contemporary music with enormous conviction and persuaded concert managers and recording companies to accept a repertory that stressed contemporary works."
