FUNNY BUNNIES: ARTIST'S MANUSCRIPT WITH WATERCOLORS

      - PARKER,N. AND B. FUNNY BUNNIES: ARTIST'S MANUSCRIPT WITH WATERCOLORS. This is the rare original manuscript for the Parkers' book Funny Bunnies published in London by W. & R. Chambers circa 1905. This original is composed of a ring bound sketch book containing all of the original watercolors used in the book (including the covers), as well as paste-ups for each text page that are also generously illustrated in line. The art for the covers has been mounted onto a single sheet of grey paper to form the covers of the manuscript. Like the published book, it is oblong measuring 14" wide by 10 inches, slightly larger than the published book and except for a short crease on the cover it is in fine condition. The text in verse tells about the daily doings of a family of humanized bunnies that are portrayed in great detail with humor and affection. Aside from the text drawings and interesting publishing notations, there are 14 fabulous full page finished waterecolors that if sold separately would amount to much more than the price of the entire manuscript. Original work by the Parkers is ultra rare and this is a wonderful opportunity to own the complete work for a picture book by them.

L'invasion de la mer. Le phare du bout du monde

      - Collection hetzel, Paris 1905, Grd. in-8 (18x27,5cm), 236pp.

Collection of Christmas cards, plus an original drawing by Georgie Gaskin

1905 - 14ff. A collection of ten color Christmas cards for the years 1896 through 1905, designed by Georgie Gaskin for Laurence W. Hodson and his family. The printed versions of the cards are accompanied by an original drawing and two proofs, including one that is hand-colored, of the card for 1896 depicting Santa Claus, heavily laden with sacks of toys, bestowing gifts upon two of the Hodsons' children. The drawing is initialed by Gaskin, and it and the hand-colored proof have her pencilled notes at the bottom. Also included in the collection is a hand-colored rough illustration of three children at play that went unused. The color printed cards feature delicate vining borders intertwined with banners that extend the Christmas greeting for that year. The subjects of the cards include the Hodson children at play and nativity scenes, and one contains a calendar for the year 1905. Georgie Gaskin and her husband, Arthu were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Though Arthur Gaskin illustrated books, including The Shepheard's Calendar by the Kelmscott Press, the couple was more well known for their elegant handmade jewelry. Georgie designed the jewelry, which often featured elaborate flowering vines, a characteristic that can readily be seen in these Christmas card designs. The original drawing has a few spots of discoloration, not affecting the image; the printed cards were previously held in mats and show some mat burn to the front side with adhesive on the back; otherwise, the items in this collection are in near fine condition.       1905 - or Two Years amonst the ice of the South Pole.First U.S. edition. Large folding & 3 other maps, portrait frontispiece & 4 coloured plates, with numerous illustrations in the text. Large 8vo. Very good original green pictorial cloth, gilt, very minor wear to top and base of spine. xx, 608pp. London, for Hurst & Blackett and New York, the MacMillan Co. The Nordenskjold expedition was part of a three pronged geographical attack on the Antarctic continent devised at the International Geographical Congress of 1895. The others were those of Scott and Drygalski. Nordenskold's sector was to be the South Atlantic, and they achieved a great deal especially considering that they lost their ship ?Antarctic? to the ice, which left the party stranded in three groups over winter. The artist on board was Frank Stokes, an American. This copy has Nordenskjold's signature tipped in and bears the library stamps of the New York Mercantile Library, to which, it seems, it was presented. Rosove, 240. A2; Spence, 860.          Autograph Letter Signed ("N. Tesla")

New York 1905 - 1 p. (45 words) pen and ink on folded sheet of Waldor-Astoria stationery. Small 8vo. A brief letter, about 45 words, from famed inventor Nikola Tesla written on the hotel stationary of New York City hotel The Waldorf-Astoria.In 1904, at a career and financial low, Tesla was forced to take out a mortgage for his Wardenclyffe Tower property, to cover his hotel expenses of living at the Waldorf-Astoria.The early 1900s were challenging years for Tesla as he sought to built his "Tesla Tower." Known as the Wardenclyffe Tower, this structure was designed by Tesla to be a powerful wireless transmission station, built on an 81-acre campus in Shoreham, New York.Things went sour as a financial embarrassment was caused by the refusal of the primary backer of the Tesla Tower to produce more cash; none other than financier J.P. Morgan. Tesla went through great angst trying to plead with J.P. Morgan to fund the completion of his tower, but his pleas were rebuffed. One biographer has suggested that by 1906 Tesla suffered a nervous breakdown because of his struggles with the Wardenclyffe Tower.Despite all of his tremendous ongoing difficulties, Tesla here expresses condolences for the death of a friend's wife: ".She leaves in my mind an indelible memory of great kindness and amicability.". Faint offsetting from old envelope, folded once; very good 1 p. (45 words) pen and ink on folded sheet of Waldor-Astoria stationery. Small 8vo

THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. [and] SUPPLEMENTAL NIGHTS

[London]: Printed by the Burton Club for Private Subscribers Only, [ca. 1905]. No. 5 OF 250 COPIES OF THE DE LUXE EDITION. This is an attractively bound set, in especially fine condition, of one of the enduring works in all of literature, and especially important as a work of translation. Probably derived from Egyptian and Persian origins, the "Arabian Nights' Entertainment," or "The Thousand and One Nights" has as its framework the story of a king who kills successive wives on the morning after the consummation of their marriage. The fatal pattern is broken by the wily Scheherazade, who enthralls her husband (and the reader) with stories so pleasing that her life is spared. The stories first appeared in a European language with the publication of a French translation by Antoine Galland early in the 18th century, and they were first done into English, with some omissions, by Edward William Lane in 1839-41. According to Britannica, the present famous translation by Burton, first printed in 1885-88, is "by far the most celebrated of all of his books. . . . As a monument of his Arabic learning and his encyclopedic knowledge of Eastern life, this translation was his greatest achievement." A man with superhuman energy, a ferocious temper, and a lust for savage experiences, Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-90) was a translator of the first order, an explorer, soldier, linguist, writer, anthropologist, and diplomat--he served as consul, respectively, in Fernando Po (on the west coast of Africa), Santos (Brazil), Damascus, and Trieste. It is said that during his lifetime he mastered 29 languages, and he authored perhaps 50 substantial books. Our printing of "Nights" is done "for private subscribers only" because, as was the case with the first edition, its erotic nature was still too explicit for the general British audience. Apart from the importance of its content, this is an attractive set in a pleasing decorative binding, and the book has apparently been the property of very modest or very careful owners, because it appears to be almost untouched.. 248 x 171 mm. (9 3/4 x 6 3/4"). Together, 17 volumes (seven of these being "Supplemental Nights"). No. 5 OF 250 COPIES OF THE DE LUXE EDITION. Contemporary black half morocco over blue buckram boards, raised bands, spine gilt in panels featuring large complex fleuron, its sides with arching palm fronds on curled stems, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, partially UNOPENED. 113 plates after Letchford, LaLauze, and others. Penzer, pp. 126-34 (citing other editions). A hint of rubbing to isolated spots on the bindings, one leaf with three-inch tear at foot, other trivial imperfections internally, but IN ESPECIALLY FINE CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT, with virtually no signs of use. This is an attractively bound set, in especially fine condition, of one of the enduring works in all of literature, and especially important as a work of translation.          Autograph Letter Signed ("N. Tesla")

New York, 1905. 1 p. (45 words) pen and ink on folded sheet of Waldor-Astoria stationery. Small 8vo. Faint offsetting from old envelope, folded once; very good. 1 p. (45 words) pen and ink on folded sheet of Waldor-Astoria stationery. Small 8vo. A brief letter, about 45 words, from famed inventor Nikola Tesla written on the hotel stationary of New York City hotel The Waldorf-Astoria. In 1904, at a career and financial low, Tesla was forced to take out a mortgage for his Wardenclyffe Tower property, to cover his hotel expenses of living at the Waldorf-Astoria. The early 1900s were challenging years for Tesla as he sought to built his "Tesla Tower." Known as the Wardenclyffe Tower, this structure was designed by Tesla to be a powerful wireless transmission station, built on an 81-acre campus in Shoreham, New York.  Things went sour as a financial embarrassment was caused by the refusal of the primary backer of the Tesla Tower to produce more cash; none other than financier J.P. Morgan. Tesla went through great angst trying to plead with J.P. Morgan to fund the completion of his tower, but his pleas were rebuffed. One biographer has suggested that by 1906 Tesla suffered a nervous breakdown because of his struggles with the Wardenclyffe Tower. Despite all of his tremendous ongoing difficulties, Tesla here expresses condolences for the death of a friend's wife: "...She leaves in my mind an indelible memory of great kindness and amicability.".

Oliver Wendell Holmes Autograph Letter Signed.

1905. Autograph letter signed from Oliver Wendell Holmes on Supreme Court letterhead. The letter is to artist Arthur Conrad LeDuc, who sent Holmes a Christmas gift. The letter measures 5 inches by 8 inches. Matted in framed. The entire piece measures 19 inches by 20 inches. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1902 to 1932, and as Acting Chief Justice of the United States January-February 1930. Noted for his long service, his concise and pithy opinions and his deference to the decisions of elected legislatures, he is one of the most widely cited United States Supreme Court justices in history, particularly for his "clear and present danger" opinion for a unanimous Court in the 1919 case of Schenck v. United States, and is one of the most influential American common law judges, honored during his lifetime in Great Britain as well as the United States. Holmes retired from the Court at the age 90, making him the oldest Justice in the Supreme Court's history. He also served as an Associate Justice and as Chief Justice on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and was Weld Professor of Law at the Harvard Law School, of which he was an alumnus.

         The Game

New York: Macmillan, 1905. First edition, second issue. With plate illustrations and decorations by Henry Hutt and T.C. Lawrence. 182, [6 (ads)] pp. 8vo. Original green-gray pictorial cloth, decorated in white and brown and lettered in red and gilt, t.e.g., illustrated endpapers. A few vignette illustrations colored in crayon, crayon scribbles to gutter of pp 38-39, staple at bottom of ffep, long closed tear to pp. 77-8, spine slightly darkened, humorous contemporary ink inscription on front-free endpaper, some rubbing and wear to extremities. First edition, second issue. With plate illustrations and decorations by Henry Hutt and T.C. Lawrence. 182, [6 (ads)] pp. 8vo. Inscribed to London's close friend and early admirer, Cloudesley Johns. First edition, inscribed by London: "Dear Cloudesley - Who is ethically disinclined to my flimflamming a capitalist society out of a dollar and a half, and who, therefore, as a good socialist must make explanation to another good socialist, namely, Jack London Glen Ellen, July 17/05." An excellent association copy of Jack London's boxing novel. According to London, Cloudesley Johns was the first person who ever wrote him about his work, offering praise of the stories "To the Man on Trail" and "The White Silence" in the January and February 1899 issues of the Overland. The resulting friendship lasted until London's death (see The Book of Jack London, 1899, p. 277ff). "If Jack had no mentor but himself, Cloudesley had Jack London - a pugnacious mentor who seldom pulled his punches. Jack's advice was born of his own experience and to Johns, as to many other aspiring writers, he gave of it freely. They met on several occasions. During London's writing of The Sea Wolf in 1903, Johns came up to Piedmont and the two men sailed up to the mouth of the Sacramento River on Jack's sloop Spray. There they played chess, swam, shot ducks and mudhens, fished, talked and wrote. 'The more I see of Cloudesley, the more I like him,' Jack wrote. 'He is honest and loyal, young and fresh, understands the discipline of a boat, and is a good cook, to say nothing of being a good-natured and genial companion'" (Walker and Reesman, p. 15). [Literature of the People's Will Party: second supplement to the collection "State crimes in Russia"]. From the Chimen Abramsky collection.; Russkaia Istoricheskaia Biblioteka [Russian Historical Library], no. 6

[Paris]: Société nouvelle de librairie et d'édition, 1905. Octavo (19 × 12.5 cm). Contemporary half-leather with gilt-tooled red leather spine label; 978, [8] pp. Lacking original wrappers, title, and a first leaf with preface; second leaf with restauration; else a very good copy with wide uncut margins in an attractive contemporary binding and with an important provenance. Vast anthology reproducing the text of periodicals, letters, proclamations, and other documents of the People's Will party, or Narodnaia Volia, a revolutionary group active from 1879 to 1884. The party argued for creating a Russian socialist movement based on the Russian peasantry, and many of its members advocated terrorist means for achieving their goals. The group formed many underground cells and is perhaps best remembered for the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. The anthology gathers the contents of all eleven issues of the group's eponymous journal, which appeared 1879-1885, followed by bulletins, directive, and other documents relevant to the party's development. Bogucharsky, who used the pseudonym Basilevsky, was a journalist, publisher, and historian of the Russian revolutionary movement. He edited periodicals such as "Byloe" and "Minuvshie gody." This copy from the famous collection of Socialistica of the Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thought. His collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, The House of Twenty Thousand Books (2014). We locate no auction records in Russia or abroad. No. 182 in the Souvarine and Bernshtein catalog (Dekker & Nordemann BV, 1980), priced 950 fl.

Fads and Fancies of Representative Americans at the Beginning of the 20th Century: Being a Portrayal of their Tastes, Diversions and Achievements.

New York: Town Topics Publishing Company, 1905. First edition. Folio, original full green morocco, elaborate tooling to the spine, front and back panels, green silk doublures and endleaves, all edges gilt. Illustrated hundreds of photogravures. All edges gilt. Huntington, Chanler, Cleveland, Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, Foxhall Keene, and many others. In fine condition. An exceptional production. William d'Alton Mann was a businessman and newspaper and magazine publisher during the civil war. He developed the Mann Boudoir Car, a railroad sleeping car, and published the Mobile Register, The Smart Set, and Town Topics. Mann came to be known for his dubious practices. For example, he created the "blind item," a gossipy news story in which the details of a private happening are reported while the identities of the people involved are not revealed. Mann used this as blackmail to publicly threaten an individual into doing his will, lest Mann chooses to expose him.

Fantastic Early-1900's Signed Postcard Collection with Many AMQS's

      - A fantastic collection of 57 signed postcards from Latin American, Spanish and Italian musicians, actors, and other cultural figures, collected ca. 1905 in Buenos Aires. The collection, on a variety of artistic and portrait postcards, some hand-colored, includes many beautifully detailed autograph musical quotations and some amusing inscriptions. On the verso, most of the postcards are addressed to the (sister?) collectors Ramona Imaz Otaño and Patricia Otaño; many of those presumably earlier addressed to Patricia have been changed to Ramona's name, suggesting some swapping or perhaps a little jealousy! The figures who have signed the postcards include singers Lina Cavalieri (1874-1944) [facsimile signature on hand-colored card], Adele Stehle (1865-1945), Andres Perello de Segurola (1874-1953), Carmelita Bau Bonaplata (1870-1911) and Alice Zeppilli (1885-1969); composers Napoleone Cesi, Giuseppe Frugatta (1860-1933), Luigi Romaniello (1860-1916) (two postcards), Spyridon Samaras (1861-1917), Arthur Napoleão dos Santos, (1843-1925), Amintore Galli (1845-1919) -- a particularly elaborate AMQS with a long inscription -- Goffredo Cochi, and Jole Gasparini; violinist Leon Fontova (1875-1949); actresses Nieves Suarez, Clotile Dumas (1882-1969), and Virginia Fabregas (1871-1950); and painter Ricardo Lopez Cabrera; among many others!Postcards each 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Overall in fine to very fine condition, with the occasional slight smudge or wear to the edges. A very lovely collection.
