WORKS OF ALFRED LORD TENNYSON, Poet Laureate

London: Macmillan, 1905. With an engraved portrait frontispiece of Tennyson after J. Mayall. 8vo, beautifully bound in full crimson morocco, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled, separating compartments elaborately decorated with fully tooled panels gilt, lettered in gilt in one compartment, the covers with very fine gilt tooling incorporating dense and wide floral borders surrounded by multiple gilt fillet lines, the turnovers gilt rolled, marbled end-leaves, all edges gilt, a very handsome binding indeed. viii, 900 + (2) Index and colophon pp. A very fine copy, beautifully preserved and especially handsome. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AND A VERY FINE COLLECTION OF THE POET'S WORK. ONE OF THE GREAT POETS OF HIS TIME. Tennyson was made Poet Laureate in succession to Wordsworth in 1850. He was held in the highest regard by Victoria and Albert. All of his great works are included here, including the "Idylls" and the "Charge of the Light Brigade". Tennyson was the first to be raised to a British peerage for his writing. He is still today one of the most popular British poets. In writing Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter, ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature, as source material for his poetry. The 'Idylls' for instance and the related poems were based on the Arthurian legends, and retell the story of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him in blank verse. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. 'Idylls of the King' is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era.

        STAFF OFFICER'S SCRAP-BOOK During the Russo-Japanese War

London: Edward Arnold, 1905, 1907. 2 volumes. First edition, first impression of each volume. Profusely illustrated with photographs, plans and maps. Many of the plans and maps are folding, maps printed in colours. Thick 8vo, publisher's original bindings of royal blue ribbed cloth lettered and ruled in gilt on spines, upper covers with gilt printed signatures and border rules in blind. x, 362; xi, 387 including index, 16 pages of ads. A very nice set, very handsome and bright, some bits of age evidence to the cloth at the board edges as is normal. A VERY SCARCE SET IN FIRST ISSUE FORMAT FOR EACH VOLUME. THIS SET IS ALSO IN QUITE BRIGHT AND PLEASING CONDITION. After more than twenty-five years of proving his mettle in India and Afghanistan, Ian Hamilton was appointed foreign attaché to the First Japanese Army during the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Although his movements in the field were severely restricted, Hamilton's descriptive powers as a writer turned this war diary into one of the most acclaimed and widely read military memoirs of the period. Hamilton's Scrap-Book was hailed by Britannica as "a book which by reason of the interest of its subject, the charm of the author's style, and and the combination of war experience and of imagination which inspired his judgments and criticisms, at once took rank in Europe as a modern military classic." Both volumes of this fine set include copious illustrations and fold-out maps, and many remain to this day in remarkable condition. This set with the ownership signature of Sir Donald Currie, and noted as being from his steam yacht Iolaire. Further there is a tipped 1920 typed label of his daughter, Margaret (Currie) Mirrielees, which also notes the volumes as ex-libris the S.Y. Iolaire. Currie was a ship owner, member of Parliament and noted philanthropist. His political career began in 1875 when, due to his knowledge of South African affairs gained as an owner of the Union Steamship Company, Lord Carnarvon, the colonial secretary, entrusted him with the conduct of negotiations with President Brand of the Orange Free State and President Burgers of the Transvaal Republic regarding the occupation of the Kimberley diamond fields. Currie entered Parliament in 1880 and in 1886 he broke on the home rule question with Gladstone, whom he had hitherto followed. He represented West Perthshire until his retirement from parliament in 1900. He remained on intimate social terms with Gladstone, who was on several occasions between 1883 and 1895 his guest with other distinguished persons on one or other of his ships for summer cruises.

Sotsial'demokrat: rabochaia gazeta [Social Democrat: a worker's newspaper], nos. 5-15.

Geneva, Tipografiia Partii, 1905. - Small folio (224 x 298 mm). Contemporary buckram boards; each issue ca. 12-18 pp. Eleven consecutive issues of this extremely scarce Menshevik periodical published in Switzerland (in total, sixteen issues appeared). An important resource on the eventful year 1905, which saw both the Russo-Japanese War and the revolutionary upheaval in Russia, the journal contains politial articles, news reports, as well as original poetry by Russian political emigres, but also updates submitted by Russian revolutionary committees in the Russian Empire. The "Sotsial'demokrat" was edited by Fiodor Il'ich Gurvich (pseudonym "Dan"), a leading Menshevik theorist. In 1917, Gurvich joined the Petrograd Soviet; in 1922 he was expelled from the Soviet Union. - Occasional stains and light discolorations; a few issues somewhat resized to lower edge; some issues still partly uncut. From the famous collection of the Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thinking. His enormous collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, "The House of Twenty Thousand Books" (2014). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Muller-Pouillets Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie; Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik; Atlas zum Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik.

Braunschweig: F. Vieweg, 1905-7, 1909. Braunschweig:: F. Vieweg, 1905-7, 1909., 1905. 4 parts in 5 volumes. 8vo. xiv, 544; [4], [xv]-xvii, [1], [545]-801, [1]; xxvii, [1], 1189, [1]; xiv, 923, [1]; xii, 622, [1] pp. 22 plates (some folding, some in color), 838, 915, 499, 531 figs. Modern half brown morocco, paste-paper boards, blind- and gilt-stamped spine labels, raised bands. Fine. FIRST EDITION in German, complete. This is the most advanced textbook on Cosmic Physics and Meteorology of its time. "His acclaimed textbook on physics and meteorology, Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie, was published in four parts.[6] Also, it was translated into German by Johann Heinrich Jakob Muller, and published with the title, Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie." – Wikip. "Pouillet's lectures — which were partially collected in his Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie (1927) and in the Lecons de physique de la Faculte des sciences (1828) — were widely read. (Pouillet published a popular account of Elements in 1850.) Although offering no spectacular novelties, they presented, in clear language, a survey of the state of the various branches of physics and of recent developments in them." – DSB XI, p. 111. / A much revised and expanded version of what was originally Pouillet's Elements de Physique Experimentale et de Meteorologie (1827), which Muller translated into Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie (1842) and then expanded with the supplement Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik (1856). It was eventually taken to a ninth edition by Pfaundler (1886-98) and finally revised and expanded yet again by Pfaundler into this final edition including an additional volume, Magnetismus und Elektrizitat (1909), written by Walter Kaufmann (1871-1947) and Alfred Coehn (1863-1938). The final version unifies almost a century's worth of effort in various disciplines into a single textbook.

Frz.

Collection hetzel 1905 - - Collection hetzel, Paris 1905, Grd. in-8 (18x27,5cm), 236pp. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Collective first edition illustrated (and only edition of this title) by George Roux 12 chromotypographies, inset black and many photographs of Algeria (some in color). Carton to an elephant with title in the red vermilion fan. Back to the lighthouse. second board with palmettes frame and central macaroon. Beautiful top plate, but small areas scraped around "Extraordinary Journeys". Second flat good, but with some scraped areas at the left corner. Beautiful back, with clean gold, with a headdress a little sagging, the tail perfect. Along the outer edge, 1.5cm area rubbed. Sharp corners. Copy very fresh, without freckles. Very nice copy. The invasion of the sea , is the last novel which Jules Verne was able to correct the tests, and happens in Tunisia and in Algeria: project of a channel which would flood a part of the Sahara. As for the Lighthouse at the end of the world , Jules Verne did not correct the proofs and it was his son Michel who made a number of changes to the original text. The action takes place in South America, east of Tierra del Fuego, where the Pacific meets the Atlantic. Wreckers lurking there, reminiscent of Stevenson's novel of the same name. These two novels first appeared for the first time in 1905. 236pp. ; 204pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
