YOUTH: A Narrative. And Two Other Stories

1902. ["Heart of Darkness"] Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1902. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1902. Original light green cloth decorated in black. First Edition. Although "Youth" gets top billing on the title page and binding, this book is sought largely for one of the "two other stories": the first appearance in book form of "Heart of Darkness," Conrad's classic tale of a journey up the Congo -- into the darkness of the jungle and of man's primal instincts. Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film "Apocalypse Now" placed the same character, Kurtz, in Vietnam War-era Cambodia.~This copy has the ad catalogue in the second state (same first edition leaves, just a different ad catalogue inserted by the binder). Condition is very good-plus (spine a little sunned, quite minor wear at the spine ends, endpapers lightly cracked). Cagle A7a.1.

(Photo album): Family's Photo Album of Camping Trips and other Adventures

Colorado / New York / Pennsylvania / Delaware / Connecticut, 1902. Very Good. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 7". Gray paper wrappers . Contains 61 black and white gelatin silver, cyanotype, or sepia toned photographs measuring between 0.5" x 0.5" and 4.5" x 3" with some captions. Some chips with edgewear thus a very good album with fine photographs.A photo album containing pictures from between 1896 and 1902 of a group of young people traveling and camping in Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Within these locations, the travelers visit the Blue Mountain Falls, the Catskill Mountains, the Bushkill Mountains, and the Hotel Rexmere, among others. Pictures show them camping with handmade tents, climbing rocks to sit next to waterfalls, dancing in the woods, and always smiling. There are also several pictures showing them riding horses or standing next to them as this was the best method of travel to various locations where a carriage could not fit, as well as a couple pictures of a tandem bike. While most of the photos are taken over rivers, in front of hotels, and setting up the camp site, there are a couple of photographs captioned "House of Hanna, 1902". Several photos are cutouts in shapes like circles, diamonds, and some are trimmed around the person's shape. These cutouts are seen more in the pictures of the children later in the photo album. The children are mostly posed with big smiles in cyanotype photographs. On the last page, incongruously there are two magazine cut outs of a town in Kashiwabara and an Asian man holding two water buckets on a stick. An interesting and relatively collection of photographs of travelers off on outdoor adventures together and later with their children.

        Wolfville Nights

New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1902. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Fine in an attractive, very good or better dustwrapper with a number of small chips, and a little tanning to the spine. Laid in is a small, two-page Autograph Letter Signed ("Alfred Henry Lewis") to the publisher Moffat, Yard and Co. politely declining their offer to co-author a book with Western artist Charles Schreyvogel. In 1917 and 1918 four separate films were made from the Wolfville stories, at least two of them using the same cast and crew. Rare in jacket.

        The Watcher by The Threshold

London, William Blackwood and Sons 1902. First Edition. 8vo. Pp 136 + [32] catalogue, dated 2/02. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth, titled and ruled in orange and white, top edge trimmed, others uncut. Endpapers a little toned, uncut edges with some spotting. Cloth a little scuffed to extremities, bumped to spine ends, nevertheless clean, strong and attractive. Very good indeed. Booksellers label and Bookplate to front pastedown (of George Waterston of Edinburgh; noted printers and stationers whose company ran successfully from 1752 until 2004, which is not a bad business lifespan) tipped in before prelims is a letter dated 1900 from Buchan to the noted distillery firm of Sandeman's in answer to a query of theirs regarding a character of the same name who featured in "John Burnet of Barns." A splendid and rip-roaring collection of weird and supernatural oddities. A pretty nice copy of a tricky book, lacking most of the usual damage (chipping to the front board decoration, flattening of the spine, fraying, horrendous bumping, possession by demons etc.) and instead being bright, clean and lovely to look at, a claim that cannot be shared by most books of its distinguished vintage. Most copies of the Hound of The Baskervilles (published in the same year) are considerably less well turned out. Packed with stories of lost tribes of Picts, bizarre behaviour by the otherwise respectable and a fair amount of feverishly guzzled brandy for purely medicinal purposes. Blanchard A13.         Cassell's Magazine Illustrated / bound volume June to November 1902 / including The Adventures of Rodney Pringle

Cassell and Company, Limited, London 1902 - Half red leather, pages showing modest age-toning, some rub to spine edges, the rear hinge weakening and a bit fragile, call this hardcover bound volume of the Edwardian monthly magazine "very-good-minus." From 1905 through his death in 1943 (and beyond -- posthumous story collections popped up well into the 1970s) former colonial surgeon R(ichard) Austin Freeman was celebrated as one of Britain's leading purveyors of detective fiction, the bulk of his tales featuring medico-forensic sleuth Dr. Thorndyke and his man, Polson. In collaboration with his friend John James Pitcairn (medical officer of Holloway Prison), however, Freeman actually wrote an earlier series of six tales featuring a character whose talents, powers of observation, and mastery of disguise easily matched those of Sherlock Holmes, but who turned those skills to the service of . . . crime. The original six adventures of gentleman burglar, con man and stock manipulator Rodney Pringle were published in Cassell's Magazine from June through November, 1902, under the pseudonym "Clifford Ashdown." The tales were then gathered into a small hardcover book published by Ward Lock, dated 1902, and titled (straightforwardly enough) "The Adventures of Rodney Pringle." Which promptly disappeared. Don't ask us. They're just gone. Six copies of that hardcover first edition are believed to remain in existence. Authorities as notable as Ellery Queen have declared "The Adventures of Rodney Pringle" the "rarest book in detective fiction" (though there are other nominees for that honor, of course.) R.B. Russell estimated the value of a nice copy at about $2,200 in 2010 . . . though those stalking a copy today might be well advised to have $4,000 at the ready. But is that coveted small book REALLY the first hardcover edition? For not only do all six of the tales appear in the bound volume of Cassell's Magazine dated "1902.2" -- June through November of that year -- but they're accompanied here by the fine original illustrations by Fred Pegram, at the original "large octavo" magazine size -- some of them striking full-page plates with image areas of 5X8 inches! Also featuring a series of non-fiction essays by R. Austin Freeman on Britain's lighthouses, as well as profiles of Mark Twain and Thomas A. Edison (by other hands), this 668-pg. bound volume is rarely encountered. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Zaria: sotsial'-demokraticheskii nauchno-politicheskii zhurnal, nos. 1 and 2-3.

Stuttgart, Dietz, 1901-1902. - Octavo (155 x 230 mm). 2 vols. (8), 286 (instead of 288) pp. (4), 428 pp. Contemporary maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine. Three of only four issues (in two volumes) of the "Dawn", an extremely uncommon journal of revolutionary Marxism edited by the Iskra group in Stuttgart. Here Vladimir Ulyanov famously first used the pseudonym "Lenin" to sign a published article (he had begun to use the pseudonym in letters in 1901). - Issue no. 1 contains an article "Sluchainyi zametki" (Random observations) signed by the earlier pseudonym "T. Kh", which he also used for two articles in issue no. 2-3. The third long article, "The Agrarian Question and the 'Critics of Marx'" ("Gg. 'kritiki' v agrarnom voprose") is signed "Lenin". The journal propagated the ideas of revolutionary Marxism and criticized the Narodniks and other more moderate movements. Among the leading contributors were G. Plekhanov, Z. Zasulich, P. Aksel'rod, Iu. Martov, A. Potresov and others. - Issue no. 1 also contains a translation of the memoirs of Karl Kautsky. Also included is a four-page pamphlet (single folded leaf) about a dispute within the editorial team, entitled "Kto vydumal plokhuiu vydumku' ("Who thought up the bad idea?"), written by the economist and philosopher Boris N. Krichevskii (1866-1919). Both volumes are from the famous collection of the Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thinking. His collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, "The House of Twenty Thousand Books" (2014). - Bookplate of the London School of Economics, with withdrawal stamp and Chimen Abramsky's hand-written note inside front wrapper, noting that he exchanged these volumes in 1970. No. 1 one lacks the final leaf. Very scarce in the trade. Emig p. 197. Schwarz p. 166. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Tannhauser. A Story of All Time

London: Kegan, Paul, Trench and Trubner. 1902. First edition. One of a run of 500 copies on laid paper [a further 6 copies were printed on vellum]. 4to. Publisher's white linen spine over blue paper covered boards. Slight rubbing to extremities, edge chipping to the white paper title label, some soiling of the white linen, some scuffing to edges and a couple of slight scratches to the front board, not penetrating the paper. A very good copy. Internally clean with light spotting, most noticeable to prelims. Last third or so of pages unopened. A strong handsome copy of a rare piece of Crowley. Legend has it that the Major Therion himself wrote this piece of teutonic drama in a single 67 hour frenzy of composition. It seems to have been met with rather grim critical response at the time, although all agreed that it was a nicely produced volume.: "Such magnificence of paper, print, and margin, that we trust we are right in assuming that he is possessed of material wealth even greater than the wealth of languages, which he displays so profusely throughout the volume. With all these attractions, he nevertheless fails to stir at all deeply. -The Pall Mall Gazette, date unknown." And my personal favourite: " We are not sure that Mr. Aleister Crowley treats life as a sacrament, because we do not understand him. -The Daily Chronicle, date unknown." Comprehensible or not, Mr. Crowley was nothing if not impossible to ignore. A distinguished copy of a scarce work.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1902 - 1902 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Good Condition

1902. Hi, This lot is an 1902 Original Hardback Wisden. In Superb condition The first Hardback that Wisden produced was in 1896, this is the seventh year of the hardback and a year I have found hard to find recently, especially in this condition. The front board is very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, one tiny mark to the top, the rear board is near perfect and the spine gilt is very bright and original. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. As good as mine on my shelf. The only downside and it is a bit picky is there is a tiny indentation to the edge of the rear board where a band has been around it. A rare Wisden in superb condition (++) and a very nice price.
