A superior collection of weird stories, described as "One of the landmark books of the genre." Bleiler. Hommage cordiale H.G. Ibels. Xbre 1910'. Ibels was one of the major commercial graphic artists of the period and a collaborator of Toulouse-Lautrec's. 18mo (206 × 135 mm), pp. [4], 246, illustrations. Original pictorial wrappers preserved in original boards with printed spine, with original dust jacket also with printed spine. Spine of jacket rather soiled.       Boston: Copeland & Day,, 1896. Designs by Tom B. Meteyard. Octavo. Original yellow boards, titles and illustration to spine and front. Illustrated endpapers by Meteyard. Minor chips to ends, faint damp stain to front board, covers generally lightly tanned, but an excellent copy, uncut. First edition, one of 60 large paper copies, inscribed and signed by Carman with the 8-line poem "Daisies" (also printed on page 13) written out on the half title, and additionally signed or initialled by Carman no less than 26 times in the text (conceivably marking out the poems of which he, rather than Hovey, was author). Carman has also signed the dedication page (the dedication reads "To M. G. M., so good to lighten cares, / The boys inscribe this second book of theirs"), making it not impossible that this copy, with its elaborately personalised attributes, was the dedication copy. The book is self-evidently rare thus. The three Vagabondia poetry collections issued by Canadian poet Bliss Carman (1861-1929, Canada's unofficial laureate) and American poet Richard Hovey (1864-1900) represented a revival in the verse of the American 90s, with anthologist Louis Untermeyer reporting that, out of an environment of moribund detachment: "revolt openly declared itself with the publication of Songs from Vagabondia (1894), More Songs from Vagabondia (1896), and Last Songs from Vagabondia (1900)... It was the heartiness, the gypsy jollity, the rush of high spirits, that conquered. Readers of the Vagabondia books were swept along by their speed faster than by their philosophy." The poems even gained praise from the later modernists, with Ezra Pound noting that he "greatly enjoyed The Songs of Vagabondia by Mr Bliss Carman and the late Richard Hovey". This second instalment contains the much-anthologised "A Vagabond Song".

In a folding fabrikoid box. Miller was born in 1851, attended Cornell, and went to Kansas in 1878. This colorful narrative of his life as a rancher there over the next five years is an excellent firsthand account of ranching in the Indian Territory during that early period. In later life Miller spent a year and a half in Alaska in 1898-99, and died in Binghamton in 1930. One of the best early accounts of the Indian Territory, and quite scarce. HOWES M602. Though sympathetic to the reformist aims of the German socialist movement, it included some trenchant and farsighted criticisms of Marxist dogmas. The book was written partly as the outcome of a visit to Berlin in 1895 with his first wife, Alys Pearsall Smith, whom he had married the previous year. In Berlin, Russell formulated an ambitious scheme of writing two series of books, one on the philosophy of the sciences, the other on social and political questions. "At last," as he later put it, "I would achieve a Hegelian synthesis in an encyclopaedic work dealing equally with theory and practice."       Adelaide, Government Printer, 1896. Foolscap folio, 32 pages (including Appendix B: Report of the Physical Geography of Central Australia, by Professor R. Tate and J.A. Watt) plus 24 plates on 13 leaves (printed rectos only) and a folding meteorological chart, 2 folding maps (a topographical map of Mount Watt and a Survey of Hermannsburg Mission Station) and a very large folding colour map (1210 x 1210 mm). Recent cloth with lettering on the front cover; blank bottom margin of the main map slightly creased with one tiny tear expertly repaired; a fine copy. South Australian Parliamentary Paper 19 of 1896: only 650 copies printed. Winnecke was the leader of the expedition, and in 'the natural order of things these [journals and maps] should have been published in connection with the scientific and other records of the Horn Expedition, as both supplementary and complementary to them'. After a financial disagreement with W.A. Horn (the organiser and backer of the venture) this did not occur, and this first edition was published under the auspices of the South Australian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia in conjunction with the Department of the Minister for the Northern Territory and the Survey Department. McLaren 16973; an octavo edition was published the following year (see McLaren 16969 - not noting the very large map).

Increasingly difficult to find in pleasing condition, this is a very desirable copy in the original publisher's boards of a book universally acclaimed as one of the great achievements in printing history. The most important figure in the revival of printing in England at the end of the 19th century, William Morris (1834-96) had fallen in love with Chaucer's works when he and Burne-Jones were students at Oxford. With the founding of the Kelmscott Press (and, in effect, the launching of the modern private press movement) in 1891, Morris began plans almost immediately for the Chaucer. The press at 14 Upper Mall began producing the book in August of 1894, but it was not until June of 1896 that any completed copies became available. Morris was already a sick man, and Burne-Jones had privately worried that his friend might not live to see his dream realized. Morris died not long afterward. Like the Gutenberg Bible and Caxton's first printing of Chaucer in 1478, the present monumental folio is one of the world's printing masterpieces. In the words of "Artist & the Book, 1860-1960," the Kelmscott Chaucer, for which both Morris and Burne-Jones "worked in the neo-Medieval idiom bequeathed by the Pre-Raphaelites, . . . is perhaps the most famous book of the modern private press movement, and the culmination of William Morris' endeavor." Ray says that the book "is not only the most important of the Kelmscott Press' productions; it is also one of the great books of the world." The borders designed by Morris are incredibly rich and lush. The work would be extraordinary even without the designs by Burne-Jones, but these are certainly the book's most compelling feature. The original plan had been for 60 illustrations, but this grew to 87 before the work was done. While other illustrated Chaucers, beginning with Caxton's, had usually limited images largely to individual portraits of each Canterbury pilgrim, Burne-Jones chose instead to draw complex vignettes illustrating the pilgrims' tales (as well as Chaucer's other works). Part of the dramatic impression left by the book results from the cumulative power of the very large number of impressive bordered pages one encounters going through the text. The intricate woodcut frames are used a total of 118 times, and each one of them enlivens a page nearly 18 inches tall. The impression is especially memorable when the framed pages face each other: 36 of the Burne-Jones cuts with their borders are opposite one another in 18 particularly beautiful openings, and there are several other remarkable openings (including the first one) where a woodcut with its frame faces a bordered text. The present copy is remarkably clean in general, and its boards show almost no signs of use, which is especially unusual.       London: Macmillan and Co., 1890 [1896] - Tall octavo. Original white cloth-backed white pictorial boards designed by E. Gertrude Thomson, title to front cover red and black. Contemporary school prize plate (The King's High School for Girls, Warwick) to front pastedown. Bookseller's stamp to head of front free endpaper. Slight wear to extremities, foxing to covers and endpapers; an excellent copy. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard and 19 colour illustrations after John Tenniel. Second edition (the first published in the UK), second issue, re-priced at one shilling on the title page. The original printing of this condensed version of Alice for younger readers was discarded by Dodgson in much the same way as its 1865 predecessor. Dodgson rejected the entire first edition of 10,000 copies in 1889, which was printed on toned paper, on the grounds that the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy". The first 4,000 rejected sheets were sent to America for publication under the imprint of Macmillan & Co. of New York, and a second edition of 10,000 copies was prepared, dated 1890, and priced four shillings. The most notable alteration between the first and second editions is the printing of the sheets on white rather than toned paper and the change to the illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, removing Alice's profile. A little marked overall, rubbing to extremities, spine sometime expertly repaired, contents toned, occasional foxing. A good copy. Etched frontispiece, 43 plates and 2 maps, 1 of which is folding. First edition of this agreeable, generously illustrated account of life in the Indian civil service between 1862 and 1870. The author served as a district collector and magistrate, seeing postings in Calcutta, Chittagong, Comilla, Dhaka, Burma, and elsewhere though "his life emerges as slight on work and heavy with the hunt as he lurches about pig-sticking and shooting tigers, bears, and natives with an indifferent skill" (Riddick); he was invalided back to England after being badlymauled by tiger.       Boston: Copeland & Day, 1896 - Octavo. Original yellow boards, titles and illustration to spine and front. Minor chips to ends, faint damp stain to front board, covers generally lightly tanned, but an excellent copy, uncut. Illustrated endpapers by Meteyard. First edition, one of 60 large paper copies, inscribed and signed by Carman with the 8-line poem "Daisies" (also printed on page 13) written out on the half title, and additionally signed or initialled by Carman no less than 26 times in the text (conceivably marking out the poems of which he, rather than Hovey, was author). Carman has also signed the dedication page (the dedication reads "To M. G. M., so good to lighten cares, / The boys inscribe this second book of theirs"), making it not impossible that this copy, with its elaborately personalised attributes, was the dedication copy. The book is self-evidently rare thus. The three Vagabondia poetry collections issued by Canadian poet Bliss Carman (1861-1929, Canada's unofficial laureate) and American poet Richard Hovey (1864-1900) represented a revival in the verse of the American 90s, with anthologist Louis Untermeyer reporting that, out of an environment of moribund detachment: "revolt openly declared itself with the publication of Songs from Vagabondia (1894), More Songs from Vagabondia (1896), and Last Songs from Vagabondia (1900). It was the heartiness, the gypsy jollity, the rush of high spirits, that conquered. Readers of the Vagabondia books were swept along by their speed faster than by their philosophy." The poems even gained praise from the later modernists, with Ezra Pound noting that he "greatly enjoyed The Songs of Vagabondia by Mr Bliss Carman and the late Richard Hovey". First Edition, which consisted of only 1,000 copies.~Emily [1830-1886] attended Amherst Academy; spent one year (1847-48) at South Hadley Female Seminary (ancestress of Mount Holyoke College); visited Washington and Philadelphia for a few weeks in the spring of 1854, while her father was in Congress; spent part of 1864 and 1865 in Boston to be treated for eye trouble; and died at fifty-five of Bright's disease. That is the entire record of her outward life. It is the least important thing about her.~To account for Emily Dickinson the recluse, who for twenty years never went farther than her garden gate, who saw no one but her family and a very few chosen friends, who dressed always in white and wrote her poems secretly on scraps of paper, rolled and tied with a thread and thrust into bureau drawers, one need not imagine any strange mysteries of love and renunciation. Certainly Emily loved an unknown man, loved him deeply and unceasingly, but could not or would not marry him.~She had the same sort of demanding, tyrannical, autocratic, and possessive father as did Elizabeth Barrett; and she did not escape. Emily's lover was not strong enough to overcome the terrific attachment, half love, half fear, that tied her to [her father] Edward Dickinson. Her hermit life, driven into and upon herself, was her answer to the tyranny which turned an ardent, gay, witty girl into a shy and withered spinster. [K&H]~Other than a few poems anonymously contributed, none of Emily's verse was published during her lifetime (-- to avoid what she called "the auction of the mind"). After her death, her brother Austin and sister Lavinia (who controlled the manuscripts) arranged to have a volume published in 1890; one of the friends who edited it, T.W. Higginson, could not convince Houghton Mifflin (for whom he worked) to publish it -- as they considered it "confused." Roberts Bros tentatively issued just 500 copies, and was then dumbfounded to see the book meet unprecedented demand and quickly run through many printings. Thus a "Second Series" of additional poems was published in 1891 (960 copies), followed by this "Third [and last] Series" in 1896. The cover design for all three volumes includes Indian pipes -- from a painting Mabel Loomis Todd had given to Emily in 1882 that thereafter hung in the latter's bedroom -- what Emily called her "preferred flower of life."~The 1,000 copies were bound in two similar cloth bindings (no priority, but of differing price). Binding A, as here, is white cloth with gilt Indian pipes, with pea-green cloth spine and all page edges gilt (priced at $1.50); binding B is grey or olive cloth, beveled board edges (also with the Indian pipes), with only the top edge gilt (priced at $1.25). Of the two cloth bindings, this "A" is generally a bit more sought-after -- because it is a closer match to the only binding in which the First Series of poems had come out, and because today "A" binding copies are scarcer than "B" binding copies.~This copy is in very good-plus, perhaps near-fine condition -- the only noteworthy flaw being a damp-mark at the top of the rear board. It was reproduced, both by commercial and hobby toy-makers as a children's toy called the "golliwog", and had great popularity in Europe and Australia into the 1970s. The doll is characterized by black skin, eyes rimmed in white, clown lips and frizzy hair. Though home-made golliwogs were sometimes female, the golliwog was generally male. For this reason, in the period following World War II, the golliwog was seen, along with the teddy bear, as a suitable soft toy for a young boy.The image of the doll has become the subject of controversy. Its depiction of black people has been accused of being racist, along with pickaninnies, minstrels, mammy figures, and other caricatures. The golliwog has been described as "the least known of the major anti-Black caricatures in the United States". In recent years, changing political attitudes with regard to race have reduced the popularity and sales of golliwogs as toys. Manufacturers who have used golliwogs as a motif have either withdrawn them as an icon or changed the name. In particular, the association of the golliwog with the pejorative term "wog" has resulted in the use of alternative names such as "golly" and "golly doll". Florence Kate Upton was born in 1873 in Flushing, New York, the daughter of English parents who had emigrated to the United States three years previously. Following the death of her father, she moved back to England with her mother and sisters when she was fourteen. There she spent several years drawing and developing her artistic skills. To afford tuition to art school, she illustrated a children's book entitled The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg. The 1895 book included a character named the Golliwogg, who was first described as "a horrid sight, the blackest gnome", but who quickly turned out to be a friendly character, and is later attributed with a "kind face." A product of the blackface minstrel tradition, the Golliwogg had jet black skin; bright red lips; and wild woolly hair. He wore red trousers, a shirt with a stiff collar, red bow-tie, and a blue jacket with tails -- all traditional minstrel attire.
