[Travel Journal]: Portugal and Spain October 1872; Tangier and Norway 1894

Portugal, Spain, Norway, Tangier, 1894. Good. Octavo. Half leather with cloth boards and paper label on the front board. Spine and corner leather worn away or eroding with some spotting on the boards thus good only with detached front board. A travel journal composed by Walter C. Pepys while visiting Portugal, Spain, France, and Norway during different years of his life with roughly half of the journal used on both sides of 58 leaves (or approximately 116 pages) comprised of approximately 20,000 words. Pepys was a practicing barrister and had gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 60th Rifles, an infantry rifle regiment of the British Army. The diary begins with his departure by steam boat to Oporto, Portugal in 1872. He describes the women on his first day there, "I had a good opportunity for seeing the people - The women are remarkably fine - many handsome and carry licensure loads on their heads- they dress in dark colours but usually have a bright cotton kerchief on the shoulder or head. Their love for jewelry evidently strong." He makes small remarks like this often in regards to the people he sees. On Halloween in Lisbon, he describes the King, "a fine house well filled in honor of the King's Birthday - he and wife were present - he looks leery and has that reputation." And again while in Boulogne, France he describes the people around him, "crowded with snobs from 'Old England' uninviting, uncomfortable and very dear." However even though he is quick to judge the people he meets he describes the locations and events with admiration. In Seville he describes their Christmas ceremony, "at dusk I saw a most curious ceremony at the Cathedral- 10 boys dancing before the high altar to the strain of a string band - they were dressed in white feathered cocked hats... This ceremony was unique to Seville and lasted the octave of the feast of the Immaculate Conception... The Vatican once attempted to abolish it." He also describes some of the other churches he visits, "the Grand Cathedral - lately restored is very fine - somewhat like Canterbury... Magnificent rose windows and one good one in the south aisle by Jean Cousin." During his time in Malaga, Spain he writes about the rioting: "Shutter up - house doors closed and armed bands of ruffians parading about shouting 'Viva La Republica!' Most of them armed were procured... In accomplish which many shots were fired and several killed and wounded." This was due to the First Spanish Republic political regime that existed from 1873 until 1874, made up of radicals, republicans, and democrats calling for a socialist revolution. In the next few entries he writes about the town returning to normal except for the influx of troops from Granada. Though he does not write as often of events as he did previously, he does write, "I hope someday again to see her in a more settled state than this at present," on the day he leaves to return home. His trip to Norway in July of 1894 is much calmer. Most of the entries begin with waking up and the weather that accompanies him while traveling; "a terrific thunderstorm, lightning magnificent - seeming to strike in balls of tine." He describes Norway as, "heavily timbered with more trepidant plots of cultivation." However, unlike his trips in 1872 and 1873 he is more morose. He writes, "The evenings are closing in- but I wrote up my funeral tonight by twilight." The rest of the entries from Norway never mention this topic again but there is still a looming discontent in them. Pepys married in 1874 and had five children before passing away in 1914 at the age of 73. An interesting, occasionally eventful, and sometimes introspective look back on the various journeys throughout a man's life.

Recollections of a Virginian (Owned and Signed by Union Civil War General, Rush Hawkins)

Sampson, Low, Marston & Company, London 1894 - 5 3/4 X 8 1/4 Inches. 279 PP. First British edition of this autobiography of Confederate General Dabney Herndon Maury (Brig. General, CSA). Signed and previously owned by Union General Rush Hawkins (9th NY Infantry). A very important copy. Signed by noted book collector and General Rush Hawkins on the half title-page. He has added the date of July 20, 1914 to this signature. Additionally signed with lengthy commentary on Maury on the following page (dated August 27, 1914). One would assume that this was the time at which he read the book and formed the sentiments behind his annotation. Signed, "A very charming personal account by a southern Gentleman of the "old school". I knew many like him sixty years ago. But alas now I might search our whole country over, in vain, for another like him. We have become a nation of hustling and the real gentlemen don't count. Aug. 27, 1914 - RCH"This copy, the scarce British first edition, looks to have been donated by Hawkins to the James M. Clift Masonic Library. Library blindstamp on the title-page. Evidence of removal of two bookplates to inside front pastedown. Scuffing and wear to original covers and edges. Toning and foxing throughout. Hinges a bit weak. Overall, a solid copy of a very rare book in which A UNION GENERAL IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR SHARES HIS TRUE ADMIRATION FOR A CONFEDERATE GENERAL.       - An interesting autograph letter from the important composer, thanking a friend for his positive review of "L'après-midi d'un Faune" and remarking on the rarity of friendly relations between musicians. 1 p. on Debussy's Parisian letterhead, dated "Thursday" in Debussy's hand; another hand has dated at the foot: December 22, 1894. Translated from the French, in part: "Many thanks for the nice article dedicated to the prelude to 'L'après-midi d'un Faune,' and also for the artistic collegiality with which you approach it! This is something so rare among musicians, especially among those who have already "arrived"; they immediately become like dogs defending a bone they have laboriously acquired! One must praise those who, like you, recognizing another art from their own, are incidentally not the loudest voices." 14 x 9.5 cm. Fine.

Albert Goodwin RWS (1845-1932) - Very Fine 1894 Watercolour,.

1894 - Albert Goodwin RWS (1845-1932) - Very Fine Original 1894 Watercolour. A very fine watercolour by the established artist Albert Goodwin, whose unmistakable monogram can be seen in the lower left corner. The watercolour is well presented in a double card mount and gilt frame. Monogrammed and Dated. Small area of surface loss along the top edge as shown in the photo, otherwise picture is in good condition.Albert Goodwin RWS (1845?1932) was a notable English landscape painter specialising in watercolours. His work shows the influences of Turner and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Goodwin was born in Maidstone in Kent, the son of a builder and one of 9 children. After leaving school he became an apprentice draper. His exceptional artistic ability was recognised at an early age and he went on to study with the Pre-Raphaelite artists Arthur Hughes and Ford Madox Brown - the latter predicting that he would become "one of the greatest landscape painters of the age". At the age of 15 his first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) in 1876. He was championed by famed art critic John Ruskin who took him on a tour of Europe, where he made many sketches from nature which were later turned into watercolours. During his lifetime he travelled extensively throughout Britain and Europe, and visited many other countries. Goodwin was a prolific artist, producing over 800 works and continuing to paint well into his eighties. His wide variety of landscape subjects reflected his love of travel and show the influence of Turner, with whom he felt a strong affinity. In later works he developed experimental techniques such as using ink over water colour to achieve atmospheric lighting effects. His works are also an important record of social history. For more information please click here. Size: Large (30-60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism Weight: 5000.00g [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         The Dolly Dialogues

Westminster Gazette, London 1894 - pp 111. 12mo (7 1/4" x 5 3/4"). A book of literary sketches by the author of The Prisoner of Zenda, and his first major literary success. FINE BINDING by ANASTASIA POWER, signed and dated with her monogram: 18AP99. In green and brown morocco with extensive gilt decoration on both front and rear covers. Spine in six raised compartments, with gilt three-lobed leaves and dots, title in gilt on second from top, and the date 1894 at foot of spine. Identical gilt design on both front and rear boards, consisting of a outer border of large tudor roses interspersed with three lobed leaves, gilt dots and linked to an inner leafed border with symmetrical straight lines of gilt giving a slight chevron effect. A central gilt design is comprised of one tudor rose within a diamond formation of the same leaves and dots. The edges of the boards are banded with gilt fillet, while the turn-ins are lined with two parallel runs of gilt fillet, with the bookbinder's monogram, described above, within at the left side of rear cover. Grey endpapers with offsetting from turn-ins. Overall, condition is Very Good, with slight rubbing on raised compartments, along outer joints, and at head and tail of spine. Small abrasion to four corners, with chip of leather off back lower corner of cover. The green-to-brown coloration of the binding leather seems a deliberate design element, giving a nice contrasting three dimensional "ombre" effect which contrasts with the flat-looking, heavily gilt design; (one is reminded of a jacquard silk fabric) *** Of ANASTASIA (ANNIE) POWER, English bookbinder, the youngest of nine children of a Whitby,Yorkshire oculist and his wife. Her training in bookbinding was probably an economic necessity given such a large family, but in any case she managed to get to London by the 1880's and trained with Douglas Cockerell as a bookbinder. Traditionally, this work was done by men, as the bookbinding guilds did not employ women. She was said to have been much influenced by Cockerell's designs. Famous in his own right as an inventive and artistic binder, Cockerell had been trained by Thomas Cobden-Sanderson, (original bookbinder at the Kelmscott Press) to whose Doves Bindery Cockerell was apprenticed beginning in 1893. Anastasia was either connected to, or a member of, the following: the Guild of Handicraft, formed by C.R. Ashbee, (whose members included William Morris and Holman Hunt); she also bound books for Cobden-Sanderson's Essex House Press sometime after its founding in 1898; The Guild of Women Binders and Hampstead Bindery in London in the period 1898-1904. A nineteen year old Virginia Woolf has been documented as studying bookbinding with Anastasia Power and her friend Sylvia Stebbing in a bindery they shared on Museum Street in London in 1901 (see Tony Bradshaw: Edinburgh Companion to Virginia Woolf and the Arts 2010, Chapter 6). This training would be of use to Woolf when she and her husband Leonard later established the Hogarth Press. While some middle class lady book binders of the day had brief careers, Anastasia Power's work would continue another thirty or so years, well after marriage to painter Gerald Loosely in 1905. The Royal Library at Windsor has another of her later works, a colorful onlaid binding of 1925 for Queen Mary. Interestingly, Annie Power seems to have chosen to use her maiden name professionally, at a time when this was very unusual. One imagines her in the feminist vanguard in Edwardian England; a dedicated professional woman in a traditionally male occupation, taken seriously by her male mentors. What speaks for itself in any case,is this extremely charming early-period book binding here produced by Anastasia Power, signed with a gilt colophon on the inside back cover of her works, seven of which we are privileged to have currently, ranging in date from 1899 to 1905.         Photogravures of American Fungi.

      C. G. Lloyd 1894-1898, Cincinnati - First edition of famed American mycologist C.G. Lloyd's first publication. A presentation copy of this collection of photogravures, evidently issued two at a time over a period of four years. Oblong quarto. Twenty-nine photogravures, 11 x 9 inches each, of various fungi, most with printed text, most numbered in sequence (1-26, final three plates with manuscript ink notations and are not numbered). Nearly all with plain tissue guards. String-tied in contemporary plain wrappers, front wrapper with the title and presentation in manuscript: "With the Compliments of Mr C. G. Lloyd/May 12, 1905/to/E. P. Sterling/[other text is lost due to damage to front wrapper]". Rear wrapper has no text. Two leaves with manuscript list of contents at front in black ink and underlined in red. Each photogravure has a penciled note at bottom, mainly stating whether the fungi in question is edible or not. Wrappers worn and chipped but with photogravures in excellent condition. A very good example of this rare, self-published collection. This publication was issued in three configurations; all copies had 26 numbered plates (as in the copy at NYPL and others); some copies were issued with three unnumbered plates of phallic mushrooms; some copies were issued with six unnumbered plates This copy, being a presentation, was sent out with 29 plates, placing it in the second configuration. It is apparent from literature of the time that the plates were issued two at a time. They were mainly for students and were never offered for sale. We can find no other copy ever having been offered at auction. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. This copy with a presentation inscription on the front from Lloyd to E. B. Sterling. Sterling was a collector from Trenton New Jersey, whose collections greatly enriched the holdings of the Lloyd Museum and the New Jersey State Museum. He was a founding member of the American Philatelic Society (1886), and also collected shells and coins. He worked as the director of the inheritance tax department for the state comptrol.Curtis Gates Lloyd (July 17, 1859 Ð November 11, 1926) was an American mycologist known for both his research on the Gasteromycetes, as well as his controversial views on naming conventions in taxonomy. He had a herbarium with over 59,000 fungal specimens, and published over a thousand new species of fungi. He was an accomplished photographer and actually took all the photographs in this collection. Along with his two brothers John Uri Lloyd and Nelson Ashley Lloyd, he founded the Lloyd Library and Museum in Cincinnati. During the early 1900s, C.G. was generously excused by his brothers from most of his duties with the firm of Lloyd Brothers, Inc., and devoted the majority of his time to scientific study. Establishing offices at Kew in London and in Paris, C. G. studied the existing works on mycology as well as specimens, and published his own findings. He quickly attained a prominent and fractious role as a leading authority in the field. C. G. Lloyd fought against using personal names in the identification of fungi, and attacked many of the mycologists of his day for attaching their names to anything they could grab. The Lloyd Museum is operational to this day and the works of C. G. Lloyd are still considered essential in the field of American mycology. The Lloyd museum has three copies of this item; 26, 29 and 32 plates. In none of theirs is there a title-page (rather the title is taken from the text at the bottom of the plates). Nor does any of their copies seem to have a table of contents as with this copy. It is quite likely that the "wrappers" are merely the remnants of a presentation envelope.
