Gustav Adolfs torg med gamla operan och Gustav II Adolfs ryttarstaty, Jakobs kyrktorn i fonden. Vaktstyrka från Svea livgarde.

Blyertsteckning. Osignerad. 20 x 26 cm.

Fort Assinniboine, Montana Collection of Photographs

      - Set of seven albumen photographs of Fort Assinniboine, Montana taken from the 1870s to 1890. Only two photographs have H. G. Klenze imprints on verso, the rest are unmarked. All are mounted and measure between 9" x 5 ½" and 10" x 8" (including mounts) ; four mounts are dark brown with gilt edges, Klenze imprints are on two of these, and three mounts are buff, one with manuscript title underneath photo. Conditions range from good to very good. All photographs have light soiling and light wear to edges; some have light silvering; all mounts have light wear and creasing to all edges and moderate soiling and toning on verso; the corner of one mount is bent and has a 3" crease affecting photograph; a different photo/mount is missing the bottom right corner, including a 1" portion of the photo. Almost all images have good contrast and detail. Imprints read: "H. G Klenze. Post Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T. Photographs of noted Indian Chiefs. Views of Western Scenery" and H. G Klenze. Photographer, Fort Assinniboine, M. T." Some of Klenze's earlier imprints state that he was successor to David F. Barry, a prolific photographer in the Dakota Territory. Photographs in this collection depict a square with officers' quarters on the right, enlisted men's quarters on the left, views showing the soldiers lined up in formation, armed with bayonets and rifles, relaxed scenes of soldiers posed on a stairway, and a sawmill located behind the officers' quarters. Like all military forts, the grounds and structures were continually rebuilt, with at least two time periods represented in these photographs. Four photographs represent the Fort when it had many whitewashed buildings and a boardwalk. The other three clearly represent a later time, likely 1880s to 1890s. The brick octagonal structure of the officers' quarters, located on the right side of one photograph is known to be built in 1880. The size and scale of Fort Assinniboine's military post and 220,000-acre military reservation established it as one of the most massive in the United States. At one time 750 officers, enlisted men and civilians resided at the post. "Between 1879 and 1903, Fort Assinniboine served as a key component of a national military strategy to secure the International Border with Canada with respect to an overall policy of intimidation and containment of Native American nations" (Montana State Historical Society). The Fort influenced national Indian policy, in particular the Cree, Metis, Blackfeet, and Sioux nations, and impacted the lifeways of those native populations. This is a historically important collection documenting the evolution of an important military base.

TRAVELS IN AFRICA DURING THE YEARS 1875-1878. [with,] TRAVELS IN AFRICA DURING THE YEARS 1879-1883. [with,] TRAVELS IN AFRICA DURING THE YEARS 1882-1886. Translated from the German by A.H. Keane, F.R.G.S.

London and Philadelphia: Chapman and Hall, 1890, 1891, 1892. 3 volumes. First edition in English of each volume, a complete set of the work. Extensively illustrated with hundreds of illustrations, many being full page, charts and maps throughout all volumes and with a large folding coloured map in the second and third volumes. Large, thick 8vo, each volume in the uniform publisher's original green cloth, ruled in black on covers and spine, pictorial vignettes on the upper covers, spines lettered in gilt. viii, 582; viii, 477,2 ads; viii, 586 pp. A rare complete set of this cornerstone work. The volumes in varied condition as this work was published and sold over time. Volumes II and III are very handsome, fine copies with old unobtrusive Gloucestershire Hartland library numbers on the lower quadrant of the spines, internal labels at the pastedowns and free flies, but otherwise, are exceptionally bright and clean copies of these scarce volumes. Volume I is a near very good copy with the cloth still bright but with some light rubbing along the edges and extremities caused by use or by shelving, the hinges reinforced neatly with binders' tape, the text a little shaken but still quite clean and fresh, this volume without the folding map. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION SET COMPLETE. Junker remained continuously in Equatorial Africa from 1875 to 1886, leading extensive expeditions from bases in Khartoum and Lado. He was a leisurely traveler and careful observer. His main objective was to study the people with whom he came into contact, and to collect animal and plant specimens. His explorations are extensively recorded in this work, first published in Germany in 1889. Junker charted the course of the Congo and its tributaries during his decade in Central Africa. His investigations of the Nile-Congo watershed successfully combated the then popular hydrographical theories and established the identity of the Welle and Ubangi. Born of German parents in Moscow, he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert, "a region at that time ... still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery". His fascination with the region led him to make three expeditions over a period of eleven years and he is recognised as one of the great African explorers. Junker received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887.

        The principles of psychology

New York: Henry Holt, 1890. James, William (1843-1910). The principles of psychology. 2 vols. [2], xii, 689; [2], vi, 704, 8 (adverts.)pp. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1890. 218 x 142 mm. Original olive cloth, gilt-lettered spines, light wear, a few tiny splits in spinal extremities. Light toning, minor offsetting on Vol. I title, but a very good set. First Edition, later impression. James's textbook of psychology represents one of the first attempts to treat psychology as a natural science in which the mind is conceived of as being subject to both Darwininan evolutionary principles and to acts of will. "The book presents, in masterly language, a wealth of naturalistic observation about human behaviour and conscious experience . . . It makes clear that psychology concerns, and is of concern to, the lives of individual people. It is exploratory, not consistently scientific in spirit, and arrives at no coherent theory of psychology. However, it widens horizons and raises issues that have, in the twentieth century, been approached scientifically. It raises many issues that still challenge scientific enquiry" (Oxford Companion to the Mind, p. 396). The Principles was printed from stereotype plates so that only one edition exists, with numerous printings all made from the original set of plates. The first impression can be distinguished by the reading "the seat of intellectual power" in Vol. I, p. 10, lines 9-10, and by the reading "object of sensation" in Vol. II, p. 101, line 20.         The Principles of Psychology

A foundational work of modern psychology and thought in its first printing of only 1000 copies. Two volumes - covers rubbed, spine ends bumped, top edges a bit dusty, miscellaneous pencil notations in the text. Withal, a very sound and internally clean set which is probably Near Fine but I'll conservatively call it Very Good. Both volumes with a contemporary owner signature dated one month(October, 1890) after publication, and later bookplates of Harvard psychologist Henry Wechsler. "Twelve years in the writing, The Principles was, and in many ways still is, a document unique in the history of human thought. Its author was not only completely conversant with the psychological literature in English, but with that in French, German, and Italian; and, as a result, The Principles presented the discipline for the first time as a truly international endeavor. James was also an artist, with the artist's eye for shading and detail, and one of the English language's truly great prose stylists. In The Principles these characteristics combined to yield some of the richest descriptions of human experience, human behavior, and human nature ever to appear in a work of non-fiction...Of all James's contributions, however, there are three for which he has been especially famous in the history of psychology: his analysis of the stream of thought, his characterization of the self, and his theory of emotion."(Wozniak)

A lovely example of this rare set, the bindings unusually fresh with the morocco and vellum in an especially good state of preservation, extremely fresh and clean internally. Only a light bit of aging to the vellum, quite unusual in this condition. VERY SCARCE LIMITED EDITION OF ONE OF THE PRINCIPLE WRITINGS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST EXPLORERS OF THE DARK CONTINENT. "By 1885 Stanley had become deeply interested in the schemes of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Mackinnon, chairman of the British India Steam Navigation Company, for establishing a British protectorate in East Equatorial Africa, and it was believed that this object could be furthered at the same time that relief was afforded to Emin Pasha, governor of the the Equatorial Province of Egypt, who had been isolated by the Mahdist rising of 1881-1885...Instead of choosing the direct route Stanley decided to go by way of the Congo, as thereby he would be able to render services to the infant Congo State, then encountering great difficulties with the Zanzibar Arabs established on the Upper Congo" (EB). Stanley and Tippoo Tib, the chief of the Congo Arabs, entered into an agreement for the latter to assume governorship of the Stanley Falls station and supply carriers for the Emin relief expedition, and then travelled up the Congo to Bangala together. They parted ways at Stanley Falls and Stanley started his trip toward Albert Nyanza, leaving a rear-guard at Yambuya on the lower Aruwimi under the command of Major E.M. Barttelot. Stanley's journey to Albert Nyanza became a hazardous 160-day march through "nothing but miles and miles, endless miles of forest" that claimed the lives of over half of Stanley's men from starvation, disease, and hostility of the natives. Finally upon the arrival at Albert Nyanza, Stanley achieved communication with Emin but was troubled by the non-arrival of his rear-guard. He retraced his steps back to Yambuya to find that Tippoo Tib had broken faith, Barttelot had been murdered, and the camp was in disarray and only one European was left. Stanley again set out for Albert Nyanza, where Stanley, Emin Pasha, and the survivors of the rear-guard began the return journey to Zanzibar by way of Uganda, a trip during which he discovered the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori), traced the course of the Semliki River, discovered Albert Edward Nyanza and the great southwestern gulf of Victorian Nyanza. Of Stanley's original 646 men, only 246 survived. This account of his adventures was wildly popular and published in six languages. This particular edition is extremely scarce in such excellent condition.

        A Musical Box Photograph Album

n.d. - Late 19th or early 20th century Olympia photgraphic album with music box. Publisher's quarto embossed brown cushioned leather boards clasped with a brass clasp at fore-edge, the opening of which is intended to trigger the music box, later respine, minor edgewear and a little scuffing here and there, essentially very good indeed, strong and bright. Gilt and green patterned endpapers. Internally clean and bright. With ten heavy card die cut chromolithographed album pages accepting between 1 and 4 photographs (no photos are present), each page is heavily decorated with a full colour depiction of a different sporting endeavour or other. Cricket, archery, baseball, curling, lacrosse and lawn tennis are all present, with the occasional foray into fox hunting and snowshoe racing. Bright and colourful, with some interesting insights into accepted uniforms for turn of the century sporting events. The music box is fully operational and charmingly melodic with the minor details that a single link in the gear release linkage has been replaced by a small piece of wire and that the linking trigger bar is no longer attached to the clasp which means you have to give it a slight tug to play the jaunty tune.which will be instantly recogniseable to anyone who didn't grow up on Joy Division and The Sisters of Mercy but is a bit of a mystery to me. The mechanism is protected by a hinged glass door and the winding key is present and secured to the side of the movement (which I think is a clockwork 1 tune 55 note model). The keyhole is in the centre of the rear board. That rather jumbled foray into mechanical engineering was intended to suggest that everything is present and correct and the music box component plays very nicely. Altogether a charming object, Olympia apparently produced several variations on this album, with and without the music box from the 1890's onwards.they were produced in Germany, a detail that has been carefully scratched out on the title page presumably from someone who had some reason to be resentful towards Germany in the early to mid 20th century, which admittedly doesn't narrow it down at all. A fascinating item, and the kind of thing we don't normally trip over. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
