Sur une proprieté du système d'equations différentielles qui définit la rotation d'un corps solide autour d'un point fixe. Autograph manuscript signed, 11 leaves, written on recto only, with some corrections and additions. Undated, but first published in Acta Mathematica 14 (1890), pp. 81-93.

[1890] 1890 - Important autograph manuscript by ?the greatest woman mathematician prior to the twentieth century? (DSB) and the first woman in Europe to obtain a doctorate in mathematics. This paper complements and completes her most famous work, ?Sur le problème de la rotation d?un corps solide autour d?un point fixe? (Acta Mathematica 12 (1889), pp. 177-232), for which she received the 1888 Bordin Prize from the French Academy of Sciences. ?Prior to Sofya Kowalevsy?s work the only solutions to the motion of a rigid body about a fixed point had been developed for the two cases where the body is symnmetric. In the first case, developed by Euler, there are no external forces, and the center of mass is fixed within the body. This is the case that describes the motion of the earth. In the second case, derived by Lagrange, the fixed point and the center of gravity both lie of the axis of symmetry of the body. This case describes the motion of the top. Sofya Kowalevsy developed the first of the solvable special cases for an unsymmetrical top. In this case the center of mass is no longer on an axis in the body. She solved the problem by constructing coordinates explicitly as ultra-elliptic functions of time? (Rappaport, p. 570). Kovalevskaya continued her work in the present paper, which shows that the Euler, Lagrange and Kovalevskaya cases are, in fact, the only solvable cases of the motion of a rigid body. ?Kovalevskaya's contribution was remarkable in many respects. First, she applied a recently developed and highly abstract mathematical theory (the theory of Abelian functions) to solve a physical problem [in the 1889 paper]. Second, she introduced one of the first proofs of the non-integrability of a physical system [in the present paper]. This result, together with Poincaré?s and Bruns? work on the three-body problem, announced the failure of the program of classical mechanics to integrate exactly and for all times the equations of motion? (Goriely, p. 8).?To appreciate Kovalevskaya?s contributions to the problem of a rotating rigid body it is necessary to understand the state of the problem before and after she worked on it. The physical problem ? to express the position of the figure axes of a rigid body explicitly as functions of time ? arises naturally from Newtonian mechanics. The first person to make progress on the problem was Euler, who over a period of twenty years gave various mathematical formulations of the problem and solved the resulting differential equations completely for the case of a body free of torque. Lagrange studied the problem, formulating it in terms of curvilinear coordinates that were better adapted to the problem than the rectangular coordinates used by Euler. Lagrange solved the case of greatest physical interest, when the body has the symmetry of a spinning top.?In both the Euler and Lagrange cases the solutions are expressed by writing time as an elliptic integral of a spatial variable. By the time of Lagrange elliptic integrals had been extensively studied by Legendre ? Further progress on the problem awaited advances in elliptic functions and sufficient liberation from physical intuition to regard time as a complex variable, at least for purposes of mathematical analysis ??The necessary steps were taken by Jacobi, who had discovered the double-periodicity of the inverse functions and investigated them as functions of a complex variable. Jacobi?s researches on elliptic functions led him to the discovery that such functions are best represented as quotients of theta functions. Jacobi applied these theta functions to represent the elliptic functions which arise in the Euler case and produced some very elegant formulas to represent the motion. This work, published only two years before Jacobi?s death in 1851, clearly marked the beginning of a new epoch in the study of the rotation problem. For the first time since the equations of motion had been agreed upon a genuinely new tool ? theta functions ? was available

Most of these were fabricated by the company itself, but some were also of foreign fabric sold under their lable. – The company was established in 1848 by Francis Barker, who at that time could already refer to 20 years of experience in making compasses and sundials for J. & G. Simms of London, a work he gained considerable fame for. "Francis Barker was a prolific compass maker. He experiemented constantly and produced a truly massive range of different compass styles and variations over the years. His business was primarily wholesale and the vast majority of his items were sold unsigned to shops and ‘makers’ who then applied their own signatures and sold the items as their own, as still happens today (.)". (cited after trademarklondon). – Instruments by Francis Barker & Son are collectibles today with some of which, such like golden pocket compasses (advertismenets included in this lot), selling for GBP 1.500-3.000. 1001 g

1890 - First edition. Portrait frontispiece & 15 further plates. 8vo. Fine original pictorial cloth, gilt. viii, 288pp. New York, Author of the renowned two-volume work Around the World on a Bicycle, in January 1889 the New York World sent Stevens out to report on Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief expedition. He travelled first to Bagamoyo and on to Msuwa where reports of Stanley's whereabouts proved accurate. Having drunk champagne with Stanley, Eimn, Casati, Stairs and Parke, he accompanied Stanley's expedition on its final march back to Bagamoyo. The work concludes with a lengthy interview with Emin. The English edition was actually printed in America using the same sheets, so there's no real primacy between the two.          In Darkest Africa or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria.

New York: Charles Scribner's, 1890. First American edition of Stanley's classic work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Two steel-engraved portrait frontispieces, two photogravure plates on India paper, mounted, 36 wood-engraved plates on India, mounted, 6 etchings by M.G. Montbard signed by the artist in pencil, 4 colored maps and plans; the 2 larger folding maps mounted on linen. In near fine condition with some light rubbing to the extremities. A very sharp example. Stanley and Emin entered Bagamoyo on their donkeys, some way ahead of their caravan, on 4 December, 1889. It was sensational news. Emin was safe, although the expedition to relieve him had cost the lives of at least 700 people. With the good journalist's facility for rapid reporting, Stanley began his account of the rescue at the Hotel Victoria, Cairo, on 25 January 1890, working on it continuously for fifty days at the rate of 20 printed pages per day. The first portion of the manuscript was delivered to the printer's on 12 March and the last proof sheet returned for printing by Clowes on 3 June. Hosken p. 189

         LEAVES OF GRASS

n.p.: , ca. 1890[?]. n.p., ca. 1890[?]. This manuscript can perhaps best be described as a most elegant commonplace book: our unknown scribe has lettered the title page "My Leaves" in red majuscules, and followed it with a collection of favorite passages from Whitman's best-known work, copied out in a pleasing humanist hand. The manuscript isn't signed or dated, but the style of the writing and the binding suggest that the creator was likely inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement that flourished during the final decades of the 19th century and first years of the 20th. Whether this was a personal treasure or a valued gift, it has been very carefully preserved over the years, and shows few signs of use.. 232 x 180 mm. (9 1/8 x 7"). [46] leaves with text on recto only. Original limp vellum, gilt titling, green silk ties threaded through both covers. In a contemporary (original?) hinged wooden box. With burnished gold initial at beginning of each excerpt.Occasional naturally occurring variations in color of vellum both to the binding and to a half dozen leaves, a couple of pages with small ink stains of no consequence, otherwise a very pleasing specimen featuring a lovely hand, a well-preserved binding, and leaves that are clean, smooth, and fresh. This manuscript can perhaps best be described as a most elegant commonplace book: our unknown scribe has lettered the title page "My Leaves" in red majuscules, and followed it with a collection of favorite passages from Whitman's best-known work, copied out in a pleasing humanist hand.          In Darkest Africa

New York: Scribner's, 1890 - Two volumes. xv, 529 pp; xv, 472 pp. 6 etchings, 150 woodcut illustrations and maps, 2 facsimiles of pages from Stanley’s notebooks, 2 large folding color maps mounted on linen. Original half dark brown morocco, vellum boards stamped in gilt. Some wear and soiling. Very good. EDITION DE LUXE, one of 250 large paper copies signed by Stanley. This beautiful production is superior in every respect, including the quality of the binding, the paper, and the illustrations, to the ordinary trade edition. Stanley, best remembered for finding Dr. Livingstone, was the greatest journalist-explorer of the nineteenth century. This book tells the harrowing story of his third expedition to central Africa, facing nearly insurmountable obstacles and dangers passing through the almost impenetrable jungle of the great Congo Forest. Stanley set off with 646 men but only 246 survived. The expedition helped lead to the foundation of British East Africa, and in along the way, the Ruwenzori mountain range and Lake Albert Edward Nyanza were discovered. Gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Bound by Johanna Birkenruth, with her stamp. A rather plain and unimpressive binding for Birkenruth, and this must be a very early example of her work, predating her later association with Frank Karslake’s exhibition of bindings by women binders in 1897 and the founding of the Guild of Women Bookbinders in 1898. Boards slightly edgeworn and marked. Ink inscription to first blank. Scattered foxing. Color frontispiece portrait engraving. With 28 additional engravings and photographic plates. Text in French.          L'alchimiste Eau-forte,

On aurait pu s'y attendre. (SOURCE). TRÈS RARE.          LEAVES OF GRASS

ca. 1890[?], n.p. - 232 x 180 mm. (9 1/8 x 7"). [46] leaves with text on recto only. Original limp vellum, gilt titling, green silk ties threaded through both covers. In a contemporary (original?) hinged wooden box. With burnished gold initial at beginning of each excerpt. Occasional naturally occurring variations in color of vellum both to the binding and to a half dozen leaves, a couple of pages with small ink stains of no consequence, otherwise a very pleasing specimen featuring a lovely hand, a well-preserved binding, and leaves that are clean, smooth, and fresh. Whether this was a personal treasure or a valued gift, it has been very carefully preserved over the years, and shows few signs of use.          The Gentle Art of Making Enemies:

(Antwerp) New York: Frederick Stokes & Brother. 1890 - Bound with the orig. grey printed paper wrappers, in full dark green crushed morocco, elaborate gilt floral borders, raised bands, gilt compartments, red & brown morocco labels, gilt dentelles. v.g. The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, published partly in response to his infamous libel trial brought against John Ruskin, Whistler had asked his friend Sheridan Ford to edit it. Prior to publication however, the relationship broke down and Whistler chose instead to edit the work himself; it was published by William Heinemann in 1890. Ford, determined to publish his own version, printed an edition of 2000 copies in Antwerp. He was followed to Antwerp by Whistler?s lawyer Sir George Lewis who successfully imprisoned Ford and embargoed all 2000 copies. Subsequently Ford issued another pirated edition with the unauthorised imprint of Frederick Stokes & Brother. Although another Paris edition was suppressed by Lewis, copies of the ?Frederick Stokes? edition made their way to America. Ford, in his initial ?note? commends ?the book to Mr Whistler?s enemies, with the soothing assurance that should each of them purchase a copy the edition will be exhausted in a week? A collection of letters and articles chronicling in large part his many grievances against his acquaintances and friends. Included is Ruskin?s criticism of Whistler?s painting Nocturne in Black and Gold ? The Falling Rocket that propelled Whistler to the libel courts: ?For Mr. Whistler's own sake, no less than for the protection of the purchaser, Sir Coutts Lindsay ought not to have admitted works into the gallery in which the ill-educated conceit of the artist so nearly approached the aspect of wilful imposture. I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now; but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public?s face.? [Attributes: Soft Cover]

AUTOGRAPH BOOK BELONGING TO THE JOURNALIST OSCAR GRUEN, WITH HUNDREDS OF ENTRIES OBTAINED AT THE TWENTIETH ZIONIST CONGRESS (1937) AND THE EVIAN CONFERENCE (1938)

(). Original boards, 4to. Oscar Gruen (1890-1953) was the founding editor of the first Jewish news bureau, the Juedische Pressezentrale, which published a weekly edition in Zurich from 1917 to 1940. Gruen began the Pressezentrale in the wake of World War I in order to counteract what he saw as international agitation against Jews. In 1919, Gruen was a member of the committee which, under the leadership of Louis Marshall, presented the Jewish case to the Paris Peace Conference and secured the inclusion of the "minority rights clause" in the various constitutions of the newly established states in Central Europe. As editor of one of the worlds leading Jewish periodicals, Gruen witnessed firsthand many of the most important Jewish-related events of the time, including the 20th Zionist Congress (1937) and the Evian Conference (1938) . This autograph book records more than 300 signatures and inscriptions from the delegates and attendees of these two important conferences. Signatures include: Chaim Weizmann, Marcus Ehrenpreis, Stephen S. Wise, A. S. Yahudah, Abba Hillel Silver, Elias Tcherikower, Cyrus Adler, Judah Magnes, Felix Warburg, David de Sola Pool, Louis Lipsky, Lord Marley, Menachem Ussishkin and a great many others.
