Spiritualism [Kokkuri Kaidan - Seiyo Kijutsu - Genmei Supirichuarizumu].

      - Tokyo, Iguru Shobo Shosetsubu 1887 (Meiji 20) 18x12cm publisher's cloth backed printed boards; [4],48,[4 advert]pp, one double page and two full page illustrations. A used copy with ink writing on the covers, endpapers and two leaves before the text begins. Not bad paper but a slap-happy binding that seems to have been put together with optimism rather than paste and has come adrift here and there. Enlarged edition, first published two months earlier and a rare book no matter how many editions there were. Seiyo Kijutsu translates as western magic and Japan is introduced to the seance - the popular pastime of hailing passing spirits to bring news from the beyond. Kokkuri - a pun involving fox, badger, both magical creatures, and to bob up and down - or table turning was definitely not a western import welcomed by authorities but it became all the rage through the 1890s. Worldcat finds no copies of this. NDL finds and illustrates the first edition of [4],42 pages and this edition.

A Victorian Era Original Paper Crafts Album with Exceptional Furniture and Flower Still Life Examples

OFFERING: A ca. 1887 original paper arts album with exceptional furniture and flower still life examples. The album was done in New York by Miss Rogers, a Froebel kindergarten teacher trainee, principally using paper folding, but with ornamental examples that use also multiple other Froebel paper craft 'occupations', including paper plaiting, cutting, interlacing, drawing, and painting. Examples and series are mounted on thirty card leaves that open in concertina format with mounts on both sides of the leaves, some with captions in pencil. Highlighting the album are the ornamental paper art works that integrate all her skills, including splendid examples of a Morris chair, with painted wood armature and folded paper and plaited paper cushions, a chaise longue in the Moorish style, with painted frame, folded paper cushions, plaited paper feet, and cut paper fringes, and a still life of Oxeye daisies in a painted terracotta flower pot decorated with freehand drawn snails, with folded paper flowers, and cut paper petals and stems. PROVENANCE: The Froebel album with ownership signature on the front pastedown is believed to have been done at the New York Seminary for Kindergartners by Miss Antoinette C. Rogers [1865-1938], (born and buried in Watertown, NY) who began teaching kindergarten at her own school in New Haven in 1889. Kindergarten-Primary Magazine cites a celebration for her 10th year of kindergarten in 1899. The training consisted of one year of course work and one year of practice teaching and she is believed to have studied with co-founder, Maria Kraus-Boelté. The album received a grade of A+. By 1911 Antoinette C. Rogers was so prominent in the field that she was President of the Froebel League of New York City (Yearbook of the Association for Childhood Education International, 1911, v. 18, p.19): her school is cited by the 1914 U.S. Government Education Bulletin for Kindergarten in the United States. RARITY: Although a good number of these Froebel method albums were made, original examples in good condition now rarely appear for sale. SIZE: 11 x 9.5 inches (279 x 241 mm) PAGINATION: 52 leaf sides have mounted series or examples, including nine ornamental. Some leaves have handwritten pencil captions. FORMAT: Light blue cloth board concertina portfolio with plain pastedowns and folding card leaves reinforced at the spine and fore-edges with grey cloth tape. CONDITION DETAIL: Leaf Mount 27 with offset toning, a few other examples with light offset toning / Card Leaves: some soiling, five leaves with some foxing or spotting at an edge / Portfolio Album: slight edgewear, rubs, corners bent in with wear / Upper Cover: top edge showing board in one area, some color fade, showing as white dots and lines / Lower Cover: two abrasion spots, some minor stain spots / Spine: crown and foot push-ins, minor joint tears, rubs, some soiling / Closure Ribbon: Very Good, light wear / Concertina Binding: Very Good, leaves reinforced with cloth tape at spine and fore-edges. FRIEDRICH FROEBEL [1782-1852]: In recent decades, Fröbel's play-based, integrated curriculum, designed to develop an appreciation in young children for harmony in Nature and the unity of all things has been extensively studied and written about with more than 13,000 scholar citations. It is now understood that the Froebel method's influence on education, literature, art, etc. has been wide-ranging. "My educational method offers to its pupils, from the beginning the opportunity to collect their own experiences from things themselves, to look with their own eyes and to learn to know by their own experiments, things and the relations of things to each other, and also the real life of the world of humanity." [Marenholtz-Bülow, Reminiscences of Friedrich Froebel, p. 226] FOLDS OF BEAUTY: are the principal part of Froebel paper folding and are based in large part on crystalline structures. Using the traditional blintz fold (a modern term, now widely adopted), initiated by folding four corners of a square to the center of the paper, numerous variations are possible. Other geometric shapes such as hexagons, octagons, etc. can also be used to make the folds. The Froebel variations is a term applied to use of the pinwheel (windmill) and it is estimated that more than 500 variations are possible. Froebel also has been passed down in the folding literature via the three dimensional Froebel star, often used for Advent star Christmas decorations. CHRONOLOGY: 1837: Froebel opened the Anstalt für Kleinkinderpflege [Institute for Fostering Young Children] in Bad Blankenburg, Thuringia, Germany. He renamed it Kindergarten (Children's garden) in 1840. / 1855: Among early commentators in English was Charles Dickens on paper cutting observed in a kindergarten; "By cutting paper, patterns are produced in the Infant Garden that would often, though the work of very little hands, be received in schools of design with acclamation." [Dickens, Infant Gardens, Household Words, July 1855] / 1856: The first kindergarten in the United States opened with teaching in German in the private home of Margarethe Meyer Schurz in Watertown, Wisconsin. / 1860: Elizabeth Peabody, "drawn to Froebel's emphasis on encouraging development in young children through play, gardening, group songs and games", intensively studied his methods. In 1860 she opened the first English language kindergarten in the United States in Boston, Massachusetts. (Patricia Cantor, Elizabeth Peabody) / 1868: The first kindergarten training school was established in Boston by Matilda and Alma Kriege. Matilda Kriege studied with Baroness von Marenholtz-Bülow, a patron, disciple and authority on Froebel. / 1873: Maria Kraus-Boelté [1836-1918]) came to the United States in 1872. Previously, she had trained in Hamburg for two years with Luise Froebel, and first worked and then directed the London kindergarten established by Bertha Ronge (sister of Margarethe Meyer Schurz). In 1867, she returned to Hamburg and taught training courses there, and subsequently, in Lübeck. She opened the New York Seminary for Kindergartners in 1873 with her husband, John Kraus, an advocate for the value of kindergarten who had previously worked at the U.S. Bureau of Education. The school became an influential center for the teaching of kindergarten in the United States. 1873: William Harris, superintendent of the St. Louis Public Schools, opened the first public kindergarten in the United States at the Des Peres School with Susan Blow as head teacher. Susan Blow had studied in New York with Maria Kraus-Boelté. / 1898: By 1898 there were 3,000 kindergartens in the United States with an enrollment of approximately 200,000 children.          Kyosai gadan [Kyosai's Account of Painting]

Iwamoto Shun 1887 [Meiji 20], Tokyo - Two parts in four volumes. Woodblock printed in colors. 'Part I gives Gyosai's thoughts on painting; part II, a life of the artist by his pupil Baitei Gaso. One of the novelties of the book is the introduction of a synopsis in English (of a kind) of the Japanese text. The artist's ability to reproduce any Japanese style is remarkable and alarming.'--British Library catalog. Kyosai (1831-1889) was one of the great Meiji-era artists. This book presents both a history of Japanese art as well as Western influences on the island nation. His guide to painting is crudely translated into English. In order to make his points, Kyosai reproduces works by several centuries of famous artists, with a breadth of styles from realist, romantic, primitive, refined, and grotesque (to apply Western labels). The printing is rather crude, giving the art an urgency and conveying Kyosai's passion for art and the history of art. It is rare that an artist is so able to take advantage of the severe limitations of a medium and turn them into an advantage. It reminds your humble cataloguer of the mimeograph revolution in poetry (again, a Western reference, for which I apologize), where poor printing quality emphasized the poets' need for self-expression and the desire to break new artistic ground. Kyosai gadan is a truly magnificent illustrated book, filled with goblins, courtesans, and chickens. Hillier & Smith 1980, 147. First edition (first printing). Four volumes near fine in wrappers with paper labels; bound with green thread. Folding case good only, with old tape repairs on the inside joints; the title written in ink on the spine, and the loss of both bone ties. Previous owner's chop in each volume. A presentable copy of a scarce and important book. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         Nancy. A Novel.

Richard Bentley and Son, London 1887 - Engraved frontispiece of Nancy. Eighth Edition. 8vo. [191 x 121 x 34 mm]. [2]ff, 438pp. Contemporary binding by Birdsall & Son of Northampton (signed in gilt on front turn-in) in vellum over boards, the covers tooled in gilt with a wide border of three fillets and repeated foliate and floral tools with medallions and darts in the corners. The spine divided into five panels with gilt tooled bnads, lettered in the second and at the foot, the others with a flower tool within compartments, gilt floral endleaves, gilt edges. (Slightly marked and a few trivial scratches on rear cover). First published in 1873. A little spotting at fore-edge but a very good copy. Inscribed in ink at the head of the title: "with the author's love and best wishes, July 22nd '90". It is slightly cropped, indicating that the binding came after the inscription. With a bookplate with initials "EB" on the attractive gilt floral endleaves. The volume subsequently belonged to the artist Raoul Millais (1901-1999). Rhoda Broughton (1840-1920) was a Welsh novelist and short story writer, with a reputation for sensationalism and recognised as a queen of the circulating libraries. She was well connected, being friends with Henry James and a neice of Sheridan Le Fanu, though Oscar Wilde took against her. After her death Somerset Maugham observed, "I remember Miss Broughton telling me once that when she was young people said her books were fast and when she was old they said her books were slow, and it was very hard since she had written exactly the same sort of book for over forty years". In 1762 William Birdsall bought John Lacy's Northampton bindery and the business remained in the family until 1961. On its closure the collection of over 3000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto. Gerring, Notes on Bookbinding, 1899, notes that in its heyday Birdsall employed a staff of 250, engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes and stationery, as well as all types of bookbindings.

The Song of Songs. With 26 etchings from designs by Edmond Hedouin and Emile Boilvin. From designs by Bida.

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Co., 1887. 25 cm x 32 cm. 47 pages. 21 illustrations in black and white. Original hardcover. Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear. The Song of Songs also known as the Song of Solomon, Canticles, or the Canticle of Canticles, is one of the "scrolls" (megillot) of the Writings (Ketuvim), the last section of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. It is also the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the Song of Songs is read every Friday night for the divine loving union they see in it; Ashkenazim chant it on the Sabbath during Passover, marking the beginning of the grain harvest and commemorating the Exodus from Egypt.nScripturally, the Song of Songs is unique in its celebration of sexual love. It gives "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The "daughters of Jerusalem" form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader.nJewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel. Christian tradition, in addition to appreciating the literal meaning of a love song between man and woman, has read the poem as an allegory of Christ and his "bride", the Christian Church.

Collection of 21 original costume designs for ballets and theatrical performances by the British artist Wilhelm [William John Charles] Pitcher. From the important collection of dance historian George Verdak (1923-1993)

Pitcher (most commonly referred to as Wilhelm) worked as a set and costume designer for ballets, pantomimes, comic operas, musical comedies, and Shakespearian and other theatrical productions. He is perhaps best-known for his work for the Empire Theatre in London from 1887 to 1915, where he designed both sets and costumes for numerous ballets, many of which starred Adeline Genée (she performed the skirt dance at the Empire Theatre in 1899 in "Round the Town Again"). He also contributed a number of articles to The Magazine of Art, including one entitled "Art in Ballet" in 1895. "Wilhelm was one of the most prolific stage designers of his day... For 20 years before World War I he was (in all but name) artistic director of ballet at the Empire Theatre, London. He wrote the scenarios and co-ordinated choreography, music and design into a coherent whole, ahead of similar concepts by the great choreographer Michael Fokine at the Diaghilev ballet. Wilhelm had great taste and his costumes were designed with strong attention to detail... His designs seem superficially charming, but are actually very practical, perfectly depicting in watercolour the fabrics he wanted the makers to use as well as indicating the character for which the design was intended." Website of the Victoria and Albert Museum "The Empire Theatre was the center for Victorian ballet. William John Charles Pitcher, known as C. Wilhelm, played an important role at the Empire from 1887 to 1915 as librettist and designer of costumes and settings. His costume designs were imaginative adaptations of historical costumes, descriptive representations of material objects, and detailed conceptions executed in soft and delicate tonalities. Many of Wilhelm's sketches have survived and thus are able to serve as a documentation of the period's social aesthetic." Eras of the Dance p. 54. Verdak, noted ballet dancer and choreographer, was an important collector of historical documents and works of art relating to the dance, assembling a large and important archive over many years. After dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and other companies, he became artistic director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and professor of Dance at Butler University..          "The Palace of Pleasure" from Faust. Original set design for a production at the Empire Theatre, London, 1895. Signed and dated by the artist "Wilhelm inv. del 1895" at lower right. From the important collection of dance historian George Verdak (1923-1993)

An attractive, carefully executed, elaborately detailed design. His designs seem superficially charming, but are actually very practical, perfectly depicting in watercolour the fabrics he wanted the makers to use as well as indicating the character for which the design was intended." Website of the Victoria and Albert Museum "The legend of Faust has been a recurringly popular theme in dance. In 1723 John Rich presented his ballet pantomime The Necromancer or the History of Dr Faustus at the Lincolns Inn Fields theatre in London and during the 19th century there was a rash of Faust-inspired ballets... [including] Lanner's Faust" with music by M. Lutz and E. Ford, performed at the Empire Theatre in London in 1895. The Oxford Dictionary of Dance, p. 163. Verdak, noted ballet dancer and choreographer, was an important collector of historical documents and works of art relating to the dance, assembling a large and important archive over many years. After dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and other companies, he became artistic director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and professor of Dance at Butler University. While Wilhelm's costume designs are held in various public collections, his far more intricate set designs are not widely held and are rarely offered on the market.. Executed in watercolour and body colour on paper. 295 mm. x 380 mm. (11-5/8" x 14-7/8"). Three light vertical folds; 35 mm. tear to lower margin; remnants of old matting and glue to outer edge of mat; laid down to mat board. Provenance: The George Verdak Collection.

The Song of Songs. With 26 etchings from designs by Edmond Hedouin and Emile Boilvin. From designs by Bida.

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Co. 1887 - Sprache: English 25 cm x 32 cm. In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the Song of Songs is read every Friday night for the divine loving union they see in it; Ashkenazim chant it on the Sabbath during Passover, marking the beginning of the grain harvest and commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Scripturally, the Song of Songs is unique in its celebration of sexual love. It gives "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The "daughters of Jerusalem" form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader. Jewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel. Christian tradition, in addition to appreciating the literal meaning of a love song between man and woman, has read the poem as an allegory of Christ and his "bride", the Christian Church.
