1887. This lot is an 1887 Original Paperback Wisden with a Facsimile Spine. In Very Good Condition. The covers are very good, a couple of small marks, a couple are a touch ugly but decent enough covers, there is some wear to page ii at the base (or rear of the cover). The spine is expertly made and internally the pages are very respectable, a touch of foxing which is pretty normal for a book from the 1880s. Tightly bound with minimal trimming.

Hashiyat al-Dasuqi 'ala Mughni al-Labib lill Imam Ibn Hisham al-'Ansari. TWO VOLUMES IN ONE.

Al-Matba'a al-Maimaniyya, Cairo 1887 - Volume I: 332 pp., / Volume II: 3 pp., (contents), 320 pp., Arabic text within borders, Mughni al-Labib text is printed on margin, heavy foxing on title page & last page, paper browned, modern hard back binding, gilt title on spine, al-Matba’a al-Maymaniyy, Cairo, 1305 A. H. / 1887. Numerous commentaries have been written on Ibn Hisham al-Ansari’s "Mughni al-Labib ‘An Kutub al-‘A’arib" including this one by Musataf ‘Arafa al-Dasuqi. Ibn Hisham al-Ansari was a distinguished and renowned Arab grammarian. Born at the beginning of 8th century Hijrah, he wrote several works which are being learnt and studied even today. "Mughni al-Labib", was compiled twice by Ibn Hisham in 749 A. H. and 756 A. H. Mughni al-Labib is among the leading grammatical works, specifically in discussion of the huruf al-ma ‘ani (grammatical prepositions or particles), in addition to other aspects of grammar. The objectives of Mughni al-Labib are stated in its muqaddimah (introduction), among which are, to facilitate understanding of al-Qur’an and to simplify students’ learning of grammatical rules and questions. Further, the methodology used by Ibn Hisham in Mughni al-Labib helps students, particularly those who major in Arabic language, to understand its content. The methodology used includes a suitable selection of topics, simplified arrangement of al-huruf order, wide and detailed discussion, and accuracy of information. It is hoped that this book, Mughni al-Labib continues to receive the attention deserved in view of the abundant benefits gained from it, and also that it continues to be part of the reference for the existing syllabus, specifically for students who major in Arabic language.       Philadelphia, : J.B. Lippincott Co., . Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear.. Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Co., 1887. 25 cm x 32 cm. 47 pages. 21 illustrations in black and white. Original hardcover. Excellent condition extremely rare edition (no.129 of 250 copies only) with only very minor signs of external wear. The Song of Songs also known as the Song of Solomon, Canticles, or the Canticle of Canticles, is one of the "scrolls" (megillot) of the Writings (Ketuvim), the last section of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible. It is also the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. In Sephardic Jewish tradition, the Song of Songs is read every Friday night for the divine loving union they see in it; Ashkenazim chant it on the Sabbath during Passover, marking the beginning of the grain harvest and commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Scripturally, the Song of Songs is unique in its celebration of sexual love. It gives "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The "daughters of Jerusalem" form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader. Jewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between God and Israel. Christian tradition, in addition to appreciating the literal meaning of a love song between man and woman, has read the poem as an allegory of Christ and his "bride", the Christian Church.

Letters of Samuel Johnson (2 vols.): lii, 423; [4], 476 p. Johnsonian Miscellanies (2 vols.): xv, 488; vii, 517 p. 23 cm. Life of Johnson contains 14 illustrations, including 4 portraits of Johnson, 1 portrait of Boswell, 5 samples of Johnson's writing, one item addressed to Johnson, map of the tour through Scotland, and a chart of Johnson's contemporaries. 8 of these illustrations are fold-outs. The Letters include one fold-out facsimile. Half leather bindings signed by Morrell Binder London. Spines in gilt with burgundy and brown labels. Slight chips to spine heads of Life Vol. 3, Letters Vol. I and Miscellanies Vol. I. Three of the brown labels have slight cracking. A little wear to lower spines in Boswell's Life Vol. I and Miscellanies Vol. I. Life Vol. I has a discolouration to title page and frontispiece opposite. Vol. 3 has small dent at bottom of front board and discoloured pages near beginning where a news clipping is placed. Bookplates of Frederick Cowan on front pastedowns. The London bindery of W. T. Morrell was established c. 1861 in Soho, London. Morrell's son W.J. Morrell took over the management in 1887 after his father's death, and subsequently brought his brother John into partnership. In 1891 an observer noted that W.J. & J. Morrell, at that time employing 50 people, preferred to bind all their work by hand and the gilding and the marbling of both paper and leather was also done on site. The editor of these works, George Birkbeck Hill (1835-1903), devoted himself to the study of English 18th-century literature, and gained a reputation as the most learned commentator on the works of Samuel Johnson. The elaborate six-volume edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, included here, is a monumental work, invaluable to a student studying Johnson. A gorgeous set that will look magnificent on the shelf of any Johnson admirer.

A Victorian Era Original Paper Crafts Album with Exceptional Furniture and Flower Still Life Examples

OFFERING: A ca. 1887 original paper arts album with exceptional furniture and flower still life examples. The album was done in New York by Miss Rogers, a Froebel kindergarten teacher trainee, principally using paper folding, but with ornamental examples that use also multiple other Froebel paper craft 'occupations', including paper plaiting, cutting, interlacing, drawing, and painting. Examples and series are mounted on thirty card leaves that open in concertina format with mounts on both sides of the leaves, some with captions in pencil. Highlighting the album are the ornamental paper art works that integrate all her skills, including splendid examples of a Morris chair, with painted wood armature and folded paper and plaited paper cushions, a chaise longue in the Moorish style, with painted frame, folded paper cushions, plaited paper feet, and cut paper fringes, and a still life of Oxeye daisies in a painted terracotta flower pot decorated with freehand drawn snails, with folded paper flowers, and cut paper petals and stems. PROVENANCE: The Froebel album with ownership signature on the front pastedown is believed to have been done at the New York Seminary for Kindergartners by Miss Antoinette C. Rogers [1865-1938], (born and buried in Watertown, NY) who began teaching kindergarten at her own school in New Haven in 1889. Kindergarten-Primary Magazine cites a celebration for her 10th year of kindergarten in 1899. The training consisted of one year of course work and one year of practice teaching and she is believed to have studied with co-founder, Maria Kraus-Boelté. The album received a grade of A+. By 1911 Antoinette C. Rogers was so prominent in the field that she was President of the Froebel League of New York City (Yearbook of the Association for Childhood Education International, 1911, v. 18, p.19): her school is cited by the 1914 U.S. Government Education Bulletin for Kindergarten in the United States. RARITY: Although a good number of these Froebel method albums were made, original examples in good condition now rarely appear for sale. SIZE: 11 x 9.5 inches (279 x 241 mm) PAGINATION: 52 leaf sides have mounted series or examples, including nine ornamental. Some leaves have handwritten pencil captions. FORMAT: Light blue cloth board concertina portfolio with plain pastedowns and folding card leaves reinforced at the spine and fore-edges with grey cloth tape. CONDITION DETAIL: Leaf Mount 27 with offset toning, a few other examples with light offset toning / Card Leaves: some soiling, five leaves with some foxing or spotting at an edge / Portfolio Album: slight edgewear, rubs, corners bent in with wear / Upper Cover: top edge showing board in one area, some color fade, showing as white dots and lines / Lower Cover: two abrasion spots, some minor stain spots / Spine: crown and foot push-ins, minor joint tears, rubs, some soiling / Closure Ribbon: Very Good, light wear / Concertina Binding: Very Good, leaves reinforced with cloth tape at spine and fore-edges. FRIEDRICH FROEBEL [1782-1852]: In recent decades, Fröbel's play-based, integrated curriculum, designed to develop an appreciation in young children for harmony in Nature and the unity of all things has been extensively studied and written about with more than 13,000 scholar citations. It is now understood that the Froebel method's influence on education, literature, art, etc. has been wide-ranging. "My educational method offers to its pupils, from the beginning the opportunity to collect their own experiences from things themselves, to look with their own eyes and to learn to know by their own experiments, things and the relations of things to each other, and also the real life of the world of humanity." [Marenholtz-Bülow, Reminiscences of Friedrich Froebel, p. 226] FOLDS OF BEAUTY: are the principal part of Froebel paper folding and are based in large part on crystalline structures. Using the traditional blintz fold (a modern term, now widely adopted), initiated by folding four corners of a square to the center of the paper, numerous variations are possible. Other geometric shapes such as hexagons, octagons, etc. can also be used to make the folds. The Froebel variations is a term applied to use of the pinwheel (windmill) and it is estimated that more than 500 variations are possible. Froebel also has been passed down in the folding literature via the three dimensional Froebel star, often used for Advent star Christmas decorations. CHRONOLOGY: 1837: Froebel opened the Anstalt für Kleinkinderpflege [Institute for Fostering Young Children] in Bad Blankenburg, Thuringia, Germany. He renamed it Kindergarten (Children's garden) in 1840. / 1855: Among early commentators in English was Charles Dickens on paper cutting observed in a kindergarten; "By cutting paper, patterns are produced in the Infant Garden that would often, though the work of very little hands, be received in schools of design with acclamation." [Dickens, Infant Gardens, Household Words, July 1855] / 1856: The first kindergarten in the United States opened with teaching in German in the private home of Margarethe Meyer Schurz in Watertown, Wisconsin. / 1860: Elizabeth Peabody, "drawn to Froebel's emphasis on encouraging development in young children through play, gardening, group songs and games", intensively studied his methods. In 1860 she opened the first English language kindergarten in the United States in Boston, Massachusetts. (Patricia Cantor, Elizabeth Peabody) / 1868: The first kindergarten training school was established in Boston by Matilda and Alma Kriege. Matilda Kriege studied with Baroness von Marenholtz-Bülow, a patron, disciple and authority on Froebel. / 1873: Maria Kraus-Boelté [1836-1918]) came to the United States in 1872. Previously, she had trained in Hamburg for two years with Luise Froebel, and first worked and then directed the London kindergarten established by Bertha Ronge (sister of Margarethe Meyer Schurz). In 1867, she returned to Hamburg and taught training courses there, and subsequently, in Lübeck. She opened the New York Seminary for Kindergartners in 1873 with her husband, John Kraus, an advocate for the value of kindergarten who had previously worked at the U.S. Bureau of Education. The school became an influential center for the teaching of kindergarten in the United States. 1873: William Harris, superintendent of the St. Louis Public Schools, opened the first public kindergarten in the United States at the Des Peres School with Susan Blow as head teacher. Susan Blow had studied in New York with Maria Kraus-Boelté. / 1898: By 1898 there were 3,000 kindergartens in the United States with an enrollment of approximately 200,000 children. The artist's ability to reproduce any Japanese style is remarkable and alarming.'--British Library catalog. Kyosai (1831-1889) was one of the great Meiji-era artists. This book presents both a history of Japanese art as well as Western influences on the island nation. His guide to painting is crudely translated into English. In order to make his points, Kyosai reproduces works by several centuries of famous artists, with a breadth of styles from realist, romantic, primitive, refined, and grotesque (to apply Western labels). The printing is rather crude, giving the art an urgency and conveying Kyosai's passion for art and the history of art. It is rare that an artist is so able to take advantage of the severe limitations of a medium and turn them into an advantage. It reminds your humble cataloguer of the mimeograph revolution in poetry (again, a Western reference, for which I apologize), where poor printing quality emphasized the poets' need for self-expression and the desire to break new artistic ground. Kyosai gadan is a truly magnificent illustrated book, filled with goblins, courtesans, and chickens. Hillier & Smith 1980, 147. First edition (first printing). Four volumes near fine in wrappers with paper labels; bound with green thread. Folding case good only, with old tape repairs on the inside joints; the title written in ink on the spine, and the loss of both bone ties. Previous owner's chop in each volume. A presentable copy of a scarce and important book.
