         Number 91

John W. Lovell Company, New York 1887 - Red cloth boards are gold, black, and blind-stamped. The title, "Number 91", is stamped in black against a solid gold panel at the center of the front cover. Below the title, "Putnam" is printed diagonally between heavy black lines. The title is also stamped in black against a solid gold panel on the spine. The boards are bright, showing just very light edge wear, rubbing, and soiling. The thread at the lower 1.25 inch of the rear joint is coming loose-the unravelling thread is visible. The spine shows just a slight roll. The hinges are secure. Floral green endpapers. Pages unmarked. A very nice example of a Horatio Alger psuedonym seldom used in published books. "Number 91" was origiinally serialized in Frank Munsey's "Golden Argosy" in 1886. Horatio Alger, Jr., (1832-1899), was so prolific in his output, that two or more of his writings often ran concurrently in "Golden Argosy", and so Alger resorted to using a psuedonym so as not to over-saturate the Alger name. When the Putnam-penned serializations were published as books, the author name invariably reverted to Alger Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         Belle Boyd

      March 23, 1887.

Autograph Letter Signed, "Belle Boyd Hammond High," 1 page, 10.25" x 6", Peoria, [Illinois], March 23, 1887, to "Melton," an old friend from school in Virginia. Light even toning, small loss at bottom right (not affecting text) expertly in-filled, else fine.

She writes, in full: "Dear Melton, Cherish thru life kind thoughts of me & know that the pleasant hours spent in your home after so many years have intervened shall often be recalled by me. Your old schoolmate & friend ..."

Boyd was married twice after the war: first to John Swainston Hammond, and after divorcing him in 1884, marrying Nathaniel Rue High the next year. In 1886 she had been touring the country delivering dramatic lectures on her life as a Confederate spy.

Boyd's autograph in any form is extremely rare. We are aware of fewer than ten examples selling at auction in the past fifty years and this is the only Autograph Letter Signed we have ever encountered.

Stafford and Co Printers and Engravers, Nottingham 1887 - This is a hugely attractive are rare surviving poster advertising the appearance of Livermore Brothers Court Minstrels at The Agricultural Hall Bridgnorth, Shropshire Wednesday and Thursday February 9th & 10th the poster is not specifically dated but online records show that this show was touring in 1887 and also appeared at Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington in that year, and the 9th & 10th February fell on a Wednesday and Thursday that year so it's safe to assume this poster dates to 1887 as well, The Minstrels appeared with blackened faces and powdered wigs in elegant court dresses of the reign of King George II, preforming ballads, Operatic Selections, Quartettes, Dances, Burlesques, and Comicalities, all accompanied with a superb string and brass band with a very strong African American vernacular.          The Four Sides of the Obelisk. (Cleopatra's Needle.)

American Polytechnic Company, Buffalo, NY 1887 - Color lithograph. Image measures 18" x 11 1/2". Sheet measures 21" x 27 1/4". Plate XXXIV. This color lithograph artfully renders the four sides of the so-called Cleopatra's Needle, famously relocated to New York's Central Park in 1880. Below each side of the obelisk is the square design which adorns the matching part of the pyramid at the obelisk's point. Published only 7 years after the obelisk's relocation, this fascinating print attests to the rapidity of the deterioration which the structure suffered when exposed to New York's climate and pollution. Particularly on the south and west sides, the legibility of the hieroglyphics has been appropriately compromised. This print is from a limited edition of Binion's "Ancient Egypt or Mizraim," Vol. II, published in 1887 and considered a landmark of American chromolithography. This copy of the print is in fantastic condition, with very minor foxing on the right side and minimal edge discoloration. Samuel Augustus Binion (1853-1914) was a Polish author, traveler, and translator. With "Ancient Egypt," he sought to present Egyptian history, art, and architecture in a thorough manner. He intended the size of the work to be sumptuous enough to allow for the faithful depiction of buildings, ornamentation, hieroglyphics, and decorations in their original colors, yet still manageable for use in both private and public libraries.
