Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)

New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First trade edition, first printing, first state. (The first in cloth, following sheep binding and salesman's dummy issues. All definitive points present: frontispiece has table with tablecloth visible under bust, Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; pg. 9 has "Decided" instead of "Decides"; Pg. 13 lists phantom illustration on pg. 88 "Him and another Man"; Pg. 57 error "with the was" 11 lines up from bottom of text; pg. 155 missing last digit of page number-- unstamped, technically the true first state. Correct trade issue straight fly on pg. 283 [sorry, no bulge!]. BAL's third state of the title page, not a cancel; 1884 date on copyright page. Pg. 143 has "l" in "Col." missing, broken type "b" in "body." No signature mark on pg. 161.) About Very Good condition. A restored copy with sturdy binding but spine rebacked patchily, new endpapers. Pen scribbles on frontispiece and first page of text. A few stray smudges and light stains to pages but overall in nice shape. Corners bumped with exposed tips. Gilt lettering fairly strong. Cloth mottled, a bit stained, and rubbed. Faint tidemark along bottom margin of pgs. 289-304. Wear near head. A nice copy of a masterwork of American literature.

         The Witch's Head

London Hurst and Blackett 1885 - First edition. Three volumes. 8vo. Publisher's olive green cloth, frayed to spine ends, spines a little discoloured, titled in silver gilt to spine and front board, minor edgewear and scuffing, essentially a very good, set of the author's scarce second novel, of which only 500 copies were printed. Internally clean, dark brown glazed endpapers, inner hinges starting to volumes I and III. Inscribed by Haggard to the half-title of volume I: "To Ella Green, From her affectionate brother, The Author. February 1885." A strong association for a seldom seen title written just prior to King Solomon's Mines and undoubtedly influencing it; the African sequences in Witch's Head being those most singled out for praise by critics.          Reminiscences of Sport in India.

London, W.H. Allen & Co., 1885. 8vo. Original burgundy cloth (secundary binding), spine ornamented and lettered in gilt, covers ruled in blind; pp. xi, [3], 419; frontispiece, 7 other plates by the author; binding a bit rubbed, a little browned in places and a few minot rears to a few pages. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to one Dr. Simon, Litchfield Barracks in 1897, on front paste-down. This is a classic 'stiff-upper-lipped' account, written with brisk military brio, while evincing much affection for his native servants - as long as they do not get ideas above their station! His discussion of "Shikar" proceeds thus: 'I use this very well known Oriental word for all kinds of sport, though, as a rule, the use of Indian words in English books is much to be deprecated'. Czech ; cf. Elliott - "Field Sports in India 1800-1947", 1973 (pp. 80 and 216).

         MEMOIRS OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1885. This biography of Napoleon by a man who actually knew him has been expertly "grangerized" with portraits and views, and is offered here in a luxurious binding and with distinguished provenance. Bourrienne (1769-1834) was apparently a youthful friend of Napoleon, went to military school with him, and shared a bohemian life with him for a period beginning in 1792. When Napoleon was victorious as the leader of the Army of Italy but bogged down in protracted negotiations with Austria in 1797, Bourrienne was called in for his legal knowledge and diplomatic skills, both of which helped in drafting the treaty of Campo Formio. During the next year, Bourrienne accompanied Napoleon to Egypt as his private secretary, and his account of this period, while not always viewed as reliable, is very vivid. Although he was subsequently employed in service to the government, Bourrienne spent most of the rest of his life out of the public eye, after having disgraced himself by amassing a personal fortune through corrupt means. His chief claim to fame is the present work. The bindings here are fittingly regal, the morocco with an almost mirror-like finish, and the extra illustrations have been added with care and taste. All are protected with tissue guards, and those taken from periodicals printed on less-than-ideal paper have been mounted on heavy stock, thus preventing the browning and offsetting often seen in less impeccably extra-illustrated works. The work was likely done for former owner William H. Bartlett (1850-1918), a wealthy Chicago businessman who bought a 205,000-acre ranch in New Mexico and hired architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee to build a magnificent 25,000 square-foot mansion that included an elegant library.. 222 x 142 mm. (8 7/8 x 5 5/8"). Three volumes extended to nine. HANDSOME EARLY 20TH CENTURY SCARLET CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT (stamp-signed on doublures by the Knickerbocker Press and Putnam's Sons), covers with gilt-rule frame with Napoleonic insignia at corners, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with an initial "N," a bee, or a crown at center, gilt titling, DARK GREEN MOROCCO DOUBLURES tooled with similar gilt frame, matching moiré silk endleaves, top edges gilt. With woodcuts in the text, 38 plates (as called for), and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 524 PLATES, some of these in color. Front flyleaf with engraved bookplate of William H. Bartlett, showing the library of his stately Casa Grande in Vermejo Park, NM. One board with four small black ink spots, but A LOVELY SET IN EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION, the bindings quite lustrous and unworn, and internally, clean, fresh, and bright, as well as refreshingly free of the offsetting that plagues so many extra-illustrated sets. This biography of Napoleon by a man who actually knew him has been expertly "grangerized" with portraits and views, and is offered here in a luxurious binding and with distinguished provenance. A single issue of the Chinese periodical "Dianshizhai Pictorial" which was a Chinese magazine founded by Ernest Major published in Shanghai between 1884 and 1898. "The educated Chinese writers and editors that Major hired to produce the paper proudly announced that the paper's purpose was not only to transmit news, but to allow for the expression of "public opinion" or even, by the eve of the overthrow of the Qing dynasty, to be "the mouth of the citizenry...It was the combination of the written text and the striking visuals, however, that made the Dianshizhai Pictorial so appealing to a broader audience than even its parent Shenbao."          THE DIVINE COMEDY

London: Longman, Green, and Co, 1885. This animated binding is unsigned, but is clearly the work of a skilled craftsman and talented designer--perhaps one who studied with one of the great English binders and teachers of the period. The rose leaf tools and heart-shaped leaves are familiar components of the Arts & Crafts style, but the flowers here are daisies and tulip-like buds rather than the Tudor roses more commonly seen. The onlays are myriad (nearly 500 total), and required hours of painstaking work. The text here is a line-for-line translation of the Italian classic, with the terza rima form of the original preserved.. 212 x 135 mm. (8 x 5"). lxxvi, 390 pp., [1] leaf. Translated by James Innes Minchin. ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY BURGUNDY CRUSHED MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT IN THE ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE, covers with ornate floral border of repeating sprays of gilt flowers and leaves, central panel gilt with twining floral vines, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central daisy radiating sprigs of leaves, turn-ins with double gilt rules flanking a row of inlaid green calf circlets, gilt daisies at corners, all edges gilt. A whisper of wear to joints, minor foxing to first and last quires, otherwise a fine copy, clean and bright inside and out, and with almost no signs of use.          The Literary Remains of Henry James.

James R. Osgood and Company, Boston 1885 - 1 blank leaf + 1 leaf with "Works of Henry James" on verso + frontispiece picture (with tissue guard) + TP + [5] = Contents + [7]-471 + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First Edition of William James 119 page "Introduction" to a collection of his father's works (McDermott 1884-5 sic). In this, James' first appearance in a book, his importatnt 119-page Introduction "presents many of [his] characteristic views, such as the antithesis betwen monism and pluralism, healthy-minded and the sick soul, religion and moralism, and the appeal to practices for the decision between them. It contains the germ of the principles elaborated in The Varieties of Religious Experience (John J. McDermott, The Writings of William James, Random House, New York, 1967, p. 822)SEE ALSO William James, In the Maelstrom of American Modernism by Robert D. Richardson (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and New York, 2007, PP. 248-253) for an insightful and in depth look at the significance of this "Introduction".The remaining contents of the book consist of an autobiographical sketch written by James' father, Henry James Senior along with his fifteen chapter book, Spiritual Creation and "Some Personal Recollections of Carlyle". It concludes with a three-page bibliography of Henry James Senior's works. The elder James was a devotee of Swedenborg and his works are generally in support of that system of belief. The book, although James' first and his father's last, was not a success and it "sank with scarcely a ripple. A dismissive notice appeared in, of all places, Godkin's Nation; a few friends wrote brief, labored acknowledgments. The publisher sold five copies in six months" (In the Maelstrom noted above, p. 254). Publisher's original dark maroon covers with gilt lettering on the spine. The spine is lightly, but noticably sunned. the head and tail of the spine have been professionally restored. With the bookplate of Charles Deitz of Omaha on side fron cover.       New York:: Charles L. Webster & Company,, 1885, 1886. . First Trade Printing. Two Volumes Complete. A Very Good plus tight set in green cloth bindings stamped in gold on the spine and front covers. This set is complete with the facsimile letter of Grant's original terms for Lee's surrender that is often missing. Mark Twain was the publisher of this monumental memoir as well as its editor and proof reader. Twain was extremely fond of and a close friend of Grant and encouraged the President and war hero to write his memoirs. Grant was dying of throat cancer but completed his two volume opus, dictating the second volume to a secretary. Twain noted in a letter to his daughter that the manuscript was not even set yet and 20,000 sets had been ordered from only two states. "Wait till you hear from the other 37." Grant finished his memoirs on July 18, 1885 and died five days later on July 23rd. Following his death, advance orders of the memoirs reached 300,000 sets realizing close to $450,000 for his family which was otherwise penniless. In a 1992 New York Times book review, General Schwarzkopf is quoted as using Grant's two-volume work as his model, calling it the finest military history of the Civil War..

The Life of the late General F. R. Chesney Colonel Commandant Royal Artillery

W.H. Allen, London 1885 - London: W. H. Allen & Co., 1885. First edition. 8vo. pp. xxiii, 477, [2], 48 (pubs. cat.); port. frontis., one extending map of the Euphrates; some small marginal tears, else largely unopened in the original cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed. With an accompanying letter from Louisa Chesney pasted to flyleaf, presenting the book to the Turkish ambassador to London Monsieur Musurus, and with a copy of his letter in reply pasted in at rear. Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872) led the 1835 expedition that investigated the navigability of the Euphrates river by crossing from the Bay of Antioch and continuing aboard two steamers, Tigris and Euphrates, to the mouth. The loss of the Tigris during a whirlwind did not diminish Chesney's opinion that the Euphrates was indeed navigable, and could thus form a stage in the overland route to India. The idea was not sanctioned by the British Government, and Chesney continued instead a military career, spending much of the 1840s in China, where he commanded the artillery at the Hong Kong Station. After his death, his widow and daughter used his extensive journals to write up the present life, this copy of which was presented by Chesney’s widow to the Turkish ambassador Kostaki Musurus (who is mentioned in the book).

Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands: Forty-Four Plates Painted in Water-Colours and Described by Mrs. Francis Sinclair, Jr.

Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, London 1885 - (14 1/8 x 10 1/8 inches). Guarded throughout. [12]pp. 44 chromolithographed plates, printed by Leighton Brothers, each with accompanying text leaf. Later green crushed morocco, covers elaborately panelled in gilt, expertly rebacked to style First edition of "One of the most prized of Hawaiian books among collectors" (Forbes). In the preface, the author writes: "The following collection of flowers was made upon the islands of Kauai and Niihau, the most northern of the Hawaiian archipelago. It is not by any means a large collection, considering that the flowering plants of the islands are said by naturalists to exceed four hundred varieties. But this enumeration was made some years ago, and it is probable that many plants have become extinct since then." Her wonderfully illustrated work would be the first book dedicated to Hawaiian flora to be illustrated in colour. Isabella Sinclair (nee McHutcheson), was born in Scotland in 1840, married her cousin Frank Sinclair in 1863 and moved to Hawaii that year. Having studied botany in New Zealand, Sinclair began painting watercolors of the Hawaiian flora, carefully identifying each specimen with its botanical name as provided by Joseph Hooker, along with its natural habitat, its native name and other information. As Forbes notes, the work was an early example of a perfect binding and as such copies tend to be found loose in their bindings with subsequent damage to the plates and leaves. This example beautifully bound and in very fine condition internally. Stafleu TL2 12.024; Forbes 3736; Nissen 1848; Great Flower Books p. 76. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
