[THREE HANDSOME COLOR LITHOGRAPHS DEPICTING THREE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BATTLES DURING THE NORTH-WEST, OR SECOND RIEL REBELLION]

Toronto: Toronto Lithographing Co., 1885. Three color lithographs. Cut Knife and Fish Creek: approximately 20 1/4 x 26 3/4 inches; Capture at Batoche: approximately 19 1/2 x 26 1/4 inches. Cut Knife and Fish Creek trimmed about 3/4 inch along the top margin, and about 1 1/4 inches along left margin. Capture at Batoche trimmed slightly more, but evenly in each margin and adhered to backing board. Overall good plus. A trio of rare battlefield views depicting three of the major skirmishes fought during the North-West Rebellion in Saskatchewan in 1885. This series of battles is also known by several other names, including the Saskatchewan Rebellion, the Northwest Uprising, and the Second Riel Rebellion (the first Riel Rebellion occurred near Manitoba in 1869, and is also known as the Red River Rebellion). Both the 1869 and 1885 actions were led by Louis Riel, the leader of the Métis people. Chronologically, the lithographs are as follows: 1) "Battle of Fish Creek." This battle occurred on April 24, 1885, and resulted in a stunning victory when around 200 Métis soldiers overcame a superior force of 900 government soldiers, and temporarily halted an advance on Batoche. 2) "Battle of Cut Knife." On May 2, 1885, a force of Cree warriors held off a superior group of Canadian army units. 3) "The Capture of Batoche." Effectively the end of the rebellion, the Métis were soundly defeated in the second week of May after they ran out of ammunition on the third day of fighting. This action forced Riel to surrender on May 15. The Métis are one of the recognized aboriginal groups in Canada who trace their roots to the first interaction between First Nations people and the earliest European settlers, usually French, and largely as a result of the fur trade. The Métis are, in essence, the earliest mixed-race people in Canada, and developed a separate, distinct culture based on their ancestral origins, usually stemming from the coupling of an indigenous woman and a male European settler. By the 19th century, the Métis were well-assimilated into French- Canadian culture, and many worked as fur traders for the North-West Company or Hudson's Bay Company, or supplied furs as independent trappers. When those companies pulled out of the Red River and Saskatchewan regions in the mid-to-late 1800s, the Canadian government took over the land, and began to enforce their will on the Métis people. The first armed conflict between the Métis and the Canadian provincial government occurred in 1869 in the Red River region, where Louis Riel led an unsuccessful rebellion. Some fifteen years later, the Métis formed their own provincial government in western Saskatchewan after hearing that the Canadian government was sending mounted police to enforce Canadian law in the region. This Second Riel Rebellion occurred in a series of skirmishes between the Métis and the Canadian armed forces between March 26 and May 12, 1885. Though led by Louis Riel, the Métis ultimately lost again to the Canadian government. Still, both rebellions helped the Métis gain some measure of recognition and respect from the Canadian government that they would very likely have not earned otherwise. The lithographs were produced by the Toronto Lithographing Company, purveyors of patriotic views of famous Canadian wars. In this case, the company assigned W.D. Blatchly to paint the scenes for the 1885 conflicts; Blatchley was, at the time, one of the leading artists in all of Canada. An excellent series of lithographs illustrating three important events in the famous rebellion, with outstanding display appeal.

GREELEY ARCTIC EXPEDITION. SEASONS OF 1881-84

Newburyport, Ma.: S.C. Reed, 1885. Cabinet photograph, mounted on card, 5 x 8 inches. Minor edge wear, two later presentation inscriptions and photographer's studio stamp on verso. Very good. A rare cabinet card photograph picturing the members of the ill-fated Greely Arctic Expedition. Greely led a scientific expedition aboard the Proteus to Lady Franklin Bay in 1881. Greely and his crew were stranded at Fort Conger on Ellesmere Island without supplies. Nineteen of the twenty-five crew members would perish in the Arctic, and one more would die on the journey home after Greely's party was rescued near Cape Sabine. Rumors of cannibalism would haunt the survivors of the expedition for the rest of their lives. Pictured here are several of the expedition members, including Adolphus Greely, just before they departed. They are identified as follows: D. Schneider, D. Cross, D. Linn, S. Long, S. Frederick, D. Henry, S. Connell, D. Bender, D. Salor, S. Bierdersack, D. Gardner, D. Ellis and D. Ralston - Seated from left to right: S. Brainard, D. Keslingbury, S. Greeley (leader), D. Lockwood, D. Israil, D. Jewell, and D. Rice.

Works of Mrs. Anna Brownell Jameson

Works of Mrs. Anna Brownell Jameson - 8 Volume Set (1885 Dark Blue Half Leather)Works of Mrs. Jameson, from the last London Edition. Published in 1885 by Houghton Mifflin (Boston). Hardcover, half leather bindings. Eight volumes in total, size is approximately 16mo, about 6.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide, in dark blue fine grained leather that features gilt tooling to the spine as well as marbled boards, textblock edges, cover edges, and endpapers. Approximately 400 pages in each volume, which primarily consist of commentary and criticism on Christian Art. Mrs. Jameson's most memorable work being "Sacred and Legendary Art". Previous owner bookplate on the front endpaper with library inventory numbers, and the same owner's name appears in red pencil in two other places of each and every volume. That owner was Caroline McCullough Everhard who served as President of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association in the 1890's.Beautiful set with wear such as scratches to the covers, bumped corners, chips to the marbled edges, and moderate rubbing of the leather to the spine heads, spine tails, edges, and especially the corners. "Sketches of Art Literature and Character" shows the most wear and imperfections as the spine tail has been distorted on the bottom, the front board has impressions and scratches, and the rear foreedge has a chip; it seems this volume was likely dropped or mishandled, but it is still intact and sound. "Legends of the Madonna" has a chip of the spine head missing and this volume shows the most edge wear and rubbing to the leather and bumped corners. "The Diary of an Ennuyée" has a hard nick to the rear foreedge and Volume II of "Sacred and Legendary Art" has a nick to the top edge. Aside from the previous owner's bookplate and red pencil markings, there is no writing to the text and the bindings are tight. Overall considering the age, this half leather bookset is in Very Good condition.8 Volumes Include:> The Characteristics of Women - Moral, Poetical, and Historical;> The Diary of an Ennuyée;> Studies, Stories and Memoirs;> Sketches of Art Literature and Character;> Legends of the Madonna - as Represented in the Fine Arts;> Sacred and Legendary Art, Volume I - as Represented in the Fine Arts (Containing the Legends of the Angels and Archangels, the Evangelists, the Apostles, the Doctors of the Church, and St. Mary Magdalene);> Sacred and Legendary Art, Volume II - as Represented in the Fine Arts (Containing the Legends of the Angels and Archangels, the Evangelists, the Apostles, the Doctors of the Church, and St. Mary Magdalene);> Legends of the Monastic Orders - as Represented in the Fine Arts (Forming the Second Series of Sacred and Legendary Art).

It is a charming book that has various printed questions of a rather personal nature with blank pages opposite for answers. Meant to be shared with close friends, as the subtitle of the book suggests, this one has four sectiond filled in. Questions range from the titillating, "Were you ever in love? and if so, how often?" to the more mundane, "Your favorite amusement". Scarce in the trade

Four Studies of a Male and Female Nude, circa 1885

[Philadelphia, 1885. A remarkable set of four original silver gelatin photographs (9 x 9 cm). Consisting of two studies of a male nude, seated on a chair upon a table, and two studies of a female nude standing on a table. All four with the word "Lemly" in pencil on the rear. Slightly silvered at the edges, else near fine. These nude studies are of they type made by Thomas Eakins and students in his circle at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and the Art Students' League of Philadelphia in the mid-1880s. They were acquired from an estate in Camden County, New Jersey, which came with a bronze sculpture by Samuel Murray, a close friend and protege of Eakins, and his assistant at the Art Students' League. The photographer, whether Eakins himself or someone in his circle, cannot be determined with certainty, but the evidence points to Eakins. Gordon Hendricks, who organized the first exhibition of Eakins' photographs at the PAFA in 1969, provides two relevant clues. In the exhibition catalog he writes, "...how do we know the photographs in the exhibition are Eakins'? The answer is to be found in two areas: first, the provenance, and second, the quality and relevance. A number of the photographs were signed by the artist himself [most were not], and the overwhelming majority have come from his immediate family or from two pupils, Samuel Murray or Charles Bregler." These four photographs meet both conditions of quality and relevance, and the Samuel Murray provenance. The studio and identity of the models is also uncertain. They were likely not taken at either the PAFA studios or the Art Students League in Philadelphia. But it is known that Eakins made photographic studies in the studio at his home on Mount Vernon Street, and in a studio at 1330 Chestnut Street, which he shared with Samuel Murray. However, the few published photographs from these two studios do not reveal enough of the interior background to make a positive identification. The female nude could quite possibly be the same person pictured in the exhibition catalog for the great Thomas Eakins exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2001-02: "Female Nude with a Mask at the PAFA, c.1883" (page 179, plate 134). Seen as Jungian archetypes, both bear an uncanny resemblance to the Venus of Dolni Vestonice, and both bear a striking resemblance to the known Eakins model Ms. Weda Cook, who is pictured in a photograph by Eakins from the collection of Gordon Hendricks: "Weda Cook with Academy plaster cast" (figure 40; 164) from the 1969 exhibition catalog. A rare and possibly unique set, revealing a hitherto unknown series of photographic studies from the school of Thomas Eakins.

CONGO AND THE FOUNDING OF ITS FREE STATE: A Story of Work and Exploration

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1885. 2 volumes. First edition, probably printed in England for Harpers at the same time as the Sampson, Low issue. Pagination is identical and the setting appears to be as well. Profusely illustrated with over one hundred full-page plates and in-text drawings, multi-folding maps, as well as with very large maps folded into the binding pockets at the rear of the books. 8vo, publisher's original light green cloth, lavishly decorated with all-over pictorial designs in gilt, red, black, green and other colours on the spines and upper covers. xxvii, 528; x, 483. Index, 12 ads. About as fine a copy as one could hope to see. An unusually nice set of this scarce book. Very tight and clean copies, probably unused and as pristine, corners, covers, tips, all in excellent condition. Very rare thus. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF STANLEY'S IMPORTANT AND POPULAR WORK ON THE FOUNDING OF THE CONGO FREE STATE. This two-volume work of exploration, history, and socio-political-economy is the result of Stanley's expedition up the Congo River in1879-84 and his attempts to re-open the interior for King Leopold of Belgium. From this journey came the establishment of the Congo State, the first free commericial state in Equatorial Africa. Henry Stanley was one of the most popular figures of the 19th Century. Adventurer, explorer and rescuer-- the public could not get enough of this romantic figure. In true Victorian style, this volume highlights his greatest achievements, his rescues of LIvingstone and Emin Pasha and his aid in establishing the Congo Free State. Sets of this important work in original cloth have become exceeding difficult to obtain. First editions are now especially elusive.

Original costume design by the important Russian artist Konstantin Alexeevich Korovine (1861-1939). Untitled and undated by ca. 1900-1920, possibly for a character in an opera.

Executed in ink, pencil, gouache, and silver paint on wove paper. Unsigned, but with monogrammatic handstamp to lower left corner. With annotations in ink in Russian relative to various parts of the costume. Slightly worn and soiled; some edge tears and repairs; upper right corner with erasure resulting in minor paper loss. Korovine designed costumes for productions of Russian operas including Borodin's Prince Igor, Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko and Le Coq d'Or. "Konstantine Korovine is one of the most famous of Russia's twentieth-century stage designers... [He] made his debut as a theatrical painter in 1885 when he executed the sets and costumes for the production of Snegurochka at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera (after Vasnetsov's designs) and, thereafter, he emerged rapidly as an independent stage designer - decorating, according to one souce, 80 operas, 37 ballets and 17 dramas during his lifetime. Korovine brought to the Russian stage a vibrancy and richness that was lacking in the traditional Imperial theaters... [He] felt more at ease when called upon to design operas and ballets treating of Russian history and legend such as Prince Igor, Sadko, and The Golden Cockerel, and he designed sets and costumes for such spectacles at home and abroad."         The Chinese At Home and Abroad. Together with the Report of the Special Committee of the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco, on the Condition of the Chinese Quarter of that City

      A. L. Bancroft, San Francisco 1885 - A notorious anti-Chinese book, with a remarkable and visually compelling fold-out color map of vice in San Francisco's Chinatown. iii, 118, 114 pages, plus the fold-out 'Official Map of Chinatown in San Francisco' (21-3/4 by 8-1/2 inches). ***BIBLIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION*** Two books, separately paginated, in one, with a rather complex bibliography, to wit: The first part of this volume is an extended anti-Chinese diatribe, apparently printed only in this edition. The second book is a reprinting of a report issued by a special committee, headed by Farwell, of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, cataloguing the supposed harm inflicted on the city by its Chinese residents. That report was issued in three versions in 1885: 1) As a separate report '. on the Condition of the Chinese Quarter and the Chinese in San Francisco' dated July 20, 1885; 2) as part of a bound collection of Municipal Reports for the fiscal year 1884-1885; and 3) in the present volume, sometime after September 1885. The separate report and the collected reports version both included an appendix not present here. This version and the separate report appear to have been printed from the same plates; the collected version has a different pagination and typesetting. Textual differences may exist, but if so, they are minor. The present volume includes a report on the Chinatown in Sacramento based on testimony given before state legislative committee in 1876. The testimony was published in Sacramento newspapers at the time; this may be the first book appearance of the committee hearing transcripts. All three versions of the San Francisco supervisor's report included the landmark 'official' map of Chinatown (more accurately a documentation of vice, which was considered synonymous with Chinese neighborhoods in 1885 San Francisco). The map is known in two variants. There is a large-scale version (62 by 140 cm), printed on two sheets, that is believed to have been issued separately. The smaller-scale issue, printed on one sheet and included in all three published versions of the reports, measures 22 by 54 cm. According to the map scholar David Rumsey, the smaller issue has one correction, correctly showing a Chinese house of prostitution where the separate map shows the location as a site of white prostitution. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR*** Farwell arrived in San Francisco from Massachusetts in 1849 as part of a company that purchased a ship, filled it with supplies needed in the Gold Rush, and set sail for fortune and adventure. Farwell settled in San Francsico and pursued a number of businesses. He was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1884 and served one term. ***ABOUT THE BOOK*** Soon after his election, Farwell and fellow supervisor John E. Kunkler formed a special committee that visited every address in Chinatown and produced a report on the vice found in the neighborhood. The report also provides considerable detail about the living conditions and culture of Chinese immigrants and their American-born children. This book might be considered a minority report to the official Board of Supervisors' findings. The official report is based on survey results and is narrowly focused on San Francisco. Farwell clearly wished to go further. In the first section of this volume, Farwell aims to 'expose.the vices, low grade of morality, cruelties, and all the general qualities which the [Chinese] race possess' and to '[prove] incontrovertibly, that the Chinese at home are a race unfit in every aspect of life to mingle with and exist among a Christian community' (p. 3-4). Farwell's publisher, A. L. Bancroft, emphasized these personal views in advertisements run in newspapers throughout the Western United States, calling The Chinese At Home and Abroad 'The Book of the Hour!' and summarizing it as 'Showing the peculiar characteristics of this repulsive people. It proves the appalling danger of retaining this heathen race among us' (See Nevada State Journal (Reno), M [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rowarth & Co (printer), London 1885 - No publisher details; printed by Rowarth & Co, London, 1885. The author was 2nd Earl Granville, styled Lord Leveson until 1846. This is a presentation copy, inscribed "With the writer's compliments" at the head of the title page and presented to the Reverend Alfred Fuller, father of A.W.F. Fuller; the Surrey Justice in question is Bostock Fuller, an ancestor of the Fuller family. There is a further gift inscription on the facing-title page from the Rev Fuller to his son, dated 9 Jany 1914 "From Father". A.W.F. Fuller has added his own signature above this. Family notes are added to this page, the title page, and throughout, with clarifications and corrections by both Rev Fuller and A.W.F. Boards are brown cloth and are in very good condition with light staining and some fading to the spine; title page and end paper are heavily toned, suggesting this has been rebound. Internally excellent condition.         JOHNSTONS' SPECIAL MAP TO ELUCIDATE THE RUSSO-AFGHAN BOUNDARY QUESTION.

: W. & A.K. Johnston. no date but [1885], Edinburg & London - Large folding colour lithographed map dissected and mounted on linen. 19 x 28 inches. Original publisher's brown cloth boards with gilt lettered title 'Map showing the Russo-Afghan Boundaries. A very rare map with only four copies found in Worldcat. A very good example, extremities of the covers slightly rubbed and one or two childish scribbles on the verso but the map is unafected. The map shows the territories of the Russian Empire, British India, Afghanistan, Persia and still independent Khanates of Bukhara and Khiva. The main attention is paid to the disputed territory around the oasis of Panjdeh which shortly before had become the area of battle between Russian and Afghan forces in the course of Russian expansion south. Wikipedia says 'The incident soured the relations between Britain and Russia, but outright war was averted with diplomacy. Lord Dufferin managed to secure a settlement in which Russia kept the Merv Oasis and Pandjeh to the south of it, but relinquished an important pass further west and promised to respect Afghan territorial integrity in the future. Following the incident, the Anglo-Russian Boundary Commission was established to delineate the northern frontier of Afghanistan. The commission did not have any Afghan involvement, and effectively led to Afghanistan becoming a buffer state between British India and the Russian Empire. The incident brought the southward expansion of Imperial Russia to a halt. The Russians founded the border town of Kushka in the conquered territory; it was the southernmost settlement of both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.' The map is supplemented with three inset maps showing the enlargement view of the disputed territory; growth of the Russian Empire towards India since Peter the Great to the present time; and a map showing the territory of the British Empire with the distances between its parts. Also the railways of British India are shown, both operational and in construction. A small inset map is also given, showing British possessions in Asia, Africa and Australasia, with the distances between them.
