REVI-LONA: A ROMANCE OF LOVE IN A MARVELOUS LAND ..

[Greensburg, Pa: Tribune Press Pub. Co.], n.d. [Circa 1879].. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-247 [248: printer's imprint], original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. "Lost race adventure novel set in the Antarctic, about a matriarchy amidst super-scientific technology and prehistoric monsters." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 59. "Except for the Candidian humor of the escapades with the governing council, Cowan maintains a serious tone, thereby increasing the complexity of his satire. Only individual interpretation can determine whether he intended the work as a satire solely upon the concept of a communistic state or as a satire of all Utopias pictured in the popular literature of the period. In either event, REVI-LONA assumes an historical importance as one of the earliest attacks upon the romantic idealism of the late nineteenth century." - Clareson, The Emergence of American Science Fiction: 1880-1915, pp. 132-33. "Told in a very florid style that suggests that the author was a fan of Herman Melville's; sometimes overwritten to the point of being boring, but also with many interesting strokes of imagination. All in all a substantial work." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 488. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-49; (1981) 1-48; (1987) 1-27; and (1995) 1-27. Clareson, Science Fiction in America 1870s-1930s 198. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 270. Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 47. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 66. Bleiler (1978), p. 51. Reginald 03485. Wright (III) 1224. Several early pages have a few copy edits in ink. Lettering on spine panel a bit dull (less that usual), a nearly fine copy. (#151804)

La loi périodique des éléments chimiques

Paris, Quesneville.

      - Virch. Arch. path. Anat., 78/2. - Berlin, Verlag von Georg Reimer, 1879, 8°, pp.197-372, 6 lith. Tafeln, feiner Halbledereinband. First print of the first-ever drawing of human chromosomes, published in 1879 by Julius Arnold (1835-1915), professor of pathology in Heidelberg! - - "The growth of cancerous tissue depends on cell multiplication, and the process by which cancer cells multiply had already drawn the attention of pathologists in the last Century. Arnold (1879) was the first to describe cell division in human tumours, and cells which he saw containing several nuclei suggested to him that they were produced by "multiple" division of the nucleus. The term "chromosome" was only a year old when Klebs (1889) described aberrant mitosis in tumour tissue, and noted that in some cells the number of "chromosome bodies" was very large. - - The earliest systematic study of cell division in malignant tissue was made by Hansemann, who presented the first descriptive cytology of human tumours in a series of papers published between 1890 and 1906. He drew attention to the many irregularities occuring in malignant tissue during the process of cell multiplication, and attributed the unusually large or small number of chromosomes seen in dividing cells to abnormal spindle formation resulting in an unequal distribution of chromosomes in the daughter cells (Hansemann, 1890)." Epitome of the History of Japan . with Illustrations of the principal historical Personages, taken from ancient Pictures.

'Printed for the Author at the Rising Sun Office, Nagasaki, and Engraved at Osaka, Japan',, Nagasaki 1879 - Presentation copy of one of the odder contributions to Far Eastern ethnography: a self-published thesis on the origins of the Japanese people among the lost tribes of Israel. The opening of Japan in the later nineteenth century after centuries of isolation encouraged numerous Western attempts to account for the specific features of Japanese race and culture. Among these was a notable desire to explain their origins in familiar terms. 'Residing for several years in Japan, McLeod ventured to offer a full theory on the common ancestry of Japanese and Jews. Like his predecessors, he was astonished to find "many Jewish faces similar to those I saw on the continent", and even the Emperor much resembled, he discovered, "the noble Jewish family of von Epstein". Facial resemblance led to further analogies. Japanese shrines are built of cedar, he remarked, as was the Jewish Temple, and Jews carried the Ark of God as the Japanese do with their mikoshi (portable shrine). McLeod believed the Jews crossed Asia, conquered China, Korea, and later, headed by a Jewish-Korean leader known as Emperor Jimmu, they crossed the sea and took over the Japanese archipelago'. ('Lighter than yellow, but not enough': Western Discourse on the Japanese Race', 1854-1904)', Rotem Kowner in The Historical Journal, 43, 1, 2000.The author, a Scots-born businessman-turned-missionary, self-published this work in Japan, with a first edition of 1878 and several later editions withmodifications. This 1879 edition with 153 pages has its last page printed in differing type and its final sentence left incomplete (the verso is blank) in common with other examples. The plates common to both editions are evidently etched or engraved: a most unusual example of Japanese-printed copper plates at this period. McLeod had also produced a larger collection of plates: Illustrations to the Epitome of the ancient history of Japan: including illustrations to guide book (1877). Small 8vo (137 × 92 mm), pp. [4], 153 plus 15 engraved portraits. Minor waterstain to foremargins of first three plates, lightly browned throughout. Original decorated silk brocade covered wrappers. Spine worn, with silk cords frayed. Inscription to front free endpaper: 'To C.H. Cundall Esq. With the Author's compts. Yokohama 16/6/68'. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Geschichte des Levantehandels im Mittelalter.

Stuttgart: J. G. Cotta'schen Buchhandlung, 1879 - 2 volumes, octavo (215 × 135 mm). Contemporary black half morocco; spine in compartments separated by gilt double rules enclosing blind-stamped single rules, titles to second and fourth gilt, floral roll to head and foot gilt; white and purple endbands, marbled sides, red speckled edges. Library stamps to versos of title pages. Spines slightly faded, light wear to corners, top corner of vol. I front board bumped with minor abrasion, small patches of foxing to pastedowns, leaves toned. A very good copy. First edition. In 1082, the Byzantine emperor granted Venice trading rights throughout imperial territory, a decree issued largely in recognition of the city state's growing influence; Venetian merchants became the dominant European force in the Levant throughout the Middle Ages, conducting a thriving trade with the Mamluk dynasty, who ruled from Cairo with Alexandria as their commercial centre, and increasingly the Ottomans, who would eventually conquer the Mamluks in 1517. Together with Karl Hopf's Geschichte Griechenlands vom Beginn des Mittelalters, Heyd's monograph "firmly established the ascendancy of German scholarship in medieval Greek history" (Lock, The Franks in the Aegean 1204–1500, p. 30). A French version entitled Histoire du commerce du Levant au moyen-âge, with numerous additions by the author, was published in Leipzig in 1885. Scarce in commerce. Not in Atabey, Blackmer, Burrell, Macro or Hamilton: The Arcadian Library. [Attributes: First Edition]

Evenals in andere Nederlandse steden. In 1880 telde Den Haag ruim 114.000 inwoners.

        THE SEASONS: A ROMAN IDYLL?WINTER - Alma-Tadema, 1879.

At the foot of one of the columns of a gallery or porch are three women round a brazier, who beguile the time by conversation and a mess of some sort, which one of them stirs on the fire and another tastes. Auguste Blanchard?s engraving share in this design is perhaps the picture?s greatest triumph. The purity of the subdued tones and the texture of the marble base of the column that forms the background by the side of which we have a glimpse of the snowy landscape, are beyond all praise.?Prijs: ?1.250,- (incl. lijst).

DIE LEHRSÄTZE DES NEUGERMANISCHEN JUDENHASSES : MIT BESONDERER RÜCKSICHT AUF W. MARR'S SCHRIFTEN

Würzburg : Stahl. 1879. Hardback. 1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers inside new boards and protective plastic. 8vo. 63 pages ; 22 cm. In German. Title translates into English as, “The Tenets of Neugermanischen Judeophobia with Special Reference to W. [Wilhelm] Marr's Writings Historically and Factually Lit by Ludwig Stern. ” Stern was a German Talmudic scholar, teacher, author, and contemporary of Wilhelm Marr, who published this work in the same year as Marr's infamous pamphlet, Der Weg zum Siege des Germanenthums über das Judenthum (The Way to Victory of Germanicism over Judaism, 1879) . Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) , a radical agitator, had been on the left wing in the 48 revolutions; he later popularized the term anti-semitism. In ‘Der Weg zum Siege des Germanenthums über das Judenthum, ' he introduced the idea that Germans and Jews were locked in a longstanding conflict, the origins of which he attributed to race, argued that Jewish emancipation resulting from German liberalism had allowed the Jews to control German finance and industry, and called for the expulsion of Jews from Germany. Marr later renounced anti-semitism at the end of his life, and declared himself as originally a 'philo-semite', undoubtedly under the impact of the debates in the SPD. This work was published in the same year as The Way to Victory of Germanicism over Judaism. OCLC lists 18 copies worldwide, and none outside of Europe. Water-damage throughout but text is very readable. Ex-Library with Jewish Institutional Stamp and Usual markings. A few tears to paper wrappers. Good condition. Important. (holo2-131-26) .

Evolution, old and new; or, the theories of Buffon, Dr. Erasmus Darwin and Lamarck as compared with that of Mr. Charles Darwin

London: Hardwicke & Bogue, 1879. First edition, 8vo, pp. xii, 384; orig. terracotta cloth stamped in gilt and black; very good, bright copy, with the bookplate of Eric Quayle. "The line of argument ... against the tyranny of natural selection was completed in Evolution, Old and New (1879), Unconscious Memory (1880), Luck or Cunning (1886), The Deadlock in Darwinism (Universal Review, 1890), and Notes, afterwards reprinted in the New Quarterly Review of 1910. These books and papers were a revolt against what Butler considered as a conspiracy of the Darwins to banish mind from the universe, and the scientific controversy was complicated by a grievance 'partly justified even now, wholly justified as far as Butler could possibly then have seen' against Charles Darwin's method of interpreting a private communication (see Festing Jones, Darwin and Butler: a Step towards Reconciliation, 1911). Butler brought to the subject in dispute tenacity, memory, and power of concentration, which enabled him to discover certain defects in the armour of natural selection. A Prague professor, Ewald Hering, had formulated a theory connecting heredity with memory a few years before. Butler knew nothing of this until his Life and Habit was on the eve of publication, but when he looked at Hering's lecture he found the kernel of Hering's theory was practically identical with his own. His object was to show that variation was due less to chance and environment, and more to cunning and effort, design, or memory 'whether conscious or unconscious' than Darwin had supposed. As a guiding principle, however, his views though highly suggestive have not proved of direct service, save as a stimulus to fresh hypotheses" (DNB).
