      Washington, 1866, 1869 und 1875 - 5 meist einseitig beschriebene Briefe, verschiedene Formate. Der US-amerikanische Astronom Asaph Hall (1829 - 1907) ist der Entdecker der beiden Marsmonde Phobos und Deimos. 1857 trat Hall eine Stelle am Harvard-College-Observatorium in Cambridge an wo er zum Experte im Berechnen von Umlaufbahnen wurde. 1862 wechselte Hall an das United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., an dem er bis 1891 blieb. An Professor Wilhelm Julius Foerster (1832 - 1921), ab 1865 Direktor der Berliner Sternwarte, Rektor der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin 1891/92. Zusammen mit Werner von Siemens und Max Wilhelm Meyer gründete Foerster 1888 die astronomische Gesellschaft Urania. Zwei Briefe auf Geschäftspapier des U.S. Naval Observatory Washington D.C. mit gestochener Ansicht der Sternwarte. Die Briefe inhaltlich interessant. Außerdem erwähnt Hall in einem Brief vom 24. Mai 1878 die von ihm entdeckten Marsmonde Phobos und Deimos und bittet Förster ihm Daten zuzuschicken, sollten in der Sternwarte Berlin Beobachtungen zu den beiden Trabanten gemacht worden sein. Auf der Rückseite dieses Briefes, einige mathematische handschriftliche Berechnungen Hall’s. The American astronomer Asaph Hall (1829 - 1907) is the discoverer of the two Marssatellites Phobos and Deimos. In 1857, Hall entered a position at the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge where he became an expert in calculating orbits. In 1862 Hall switched to the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, where he remained until 1891.          John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1875 - 1875 Wisden Front Wrapper Preserved Fine Condition

      1875. This is possibly the best Wisden that we have offered for sale to date on Wisden Auction. The book on offer here is an 1875 Wisden that has been rebound some time ago in green quarter leather with brown boards. The title and year appear in gilt to the spine. The boards are in excellent condition. The front wrapper has been preserved and is in fine condition. The book lacks the rear wrapper. The remaining contents - pages 1-212 are in immaculate, clean, unmarked condition and this is as good an example of an 1875 as we have seen. In the past couple of years we have sold two 1875s - both rebound without the wrappers and each has sold in region of £19,000.00. The book on offer here has the original front wrapper in fine condition and we think therefore that the suggested price - £22,500.00 is just about right. In today's market we would estimate that a rebound copy retaining both wrappers would be in the region of £27,000.00 or thereabouts and a copy still completely in the original wrappers and not rebound would certainly be worth in excess of £30,000.00. If any additional photographs are required or any further information please do not hesitate to contact us. The front and rear hinges are strong and the contents are in excellent, complete, unmarked fine condition. A very nice example.

      New York:: D. Appleton and Company,, 1875. . A Very Good plus set in blue cloth binding with gilt stamping to the front cover and the spine. Two volumes complete, with the fold out map present. Hailed as a prophet of modern war and condemned as a harbinger of modern barbarism, Sherman is the most controversial general of the Civil War.          Binding, Fine- Noulhac, with Signed Photo in Studio] inédite de la Comtesse de Sabran et du Chevalier de Boufflers, 1778-1788

      E. Plon, Paris 1875 - Superbly bound by Noulhac in full black crushed morocco in Jansenist style, however with lavish and bold gilt-blocked spine containing six designs between each raised band, elaborately gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers on heavy stock. Included is a separate photograph (6 x 4") of Noulhac and his wife, in his studio in Paris, exceedingly rare, and signed by both Noulhac and wife (imprinted on mounting papere, "Stanislas, Paris"). Book with etched frontispiece, all edges gilt. Noulhac, 1866-1931, according to Alastair Duncan in Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding: "A superlative craftsman, Noulhac specialized initially in plain leather bindings (reliures jansénistes) and copies of 18th-century bindings. By 1900 he had begun to incorporate modest floral emblems into the dentilled fillet borders on his covers " thus placing this binding most likely Turn of the Century. Book and photograph are fine. Scarce thus. CORRESPONDANCE inédite de la Comtesse de SABRAN et du Chevalier de BOUFFLERS 1778-1788.MAGNIEU (E. de);PRAT (Henri);

         Three hundred French portraits representing personages of the Courts of Francis I, Henry II, and Francis II, by Clouet. Auto-lithographed from the originals at Castle Howard, Yorkshire.

      Londres, Maclure & Macdonald, Paris, Hachette, 1875, - 2 vol. in-folio carrés, [4] et [2] ff. de texte, et 301 portraits lithographiés sur fond teinte, montés sur onglets, dont 2 frontispices, demi-maroquin marine, dos à nerfs ornés de caissons fleurdelisés, têtes dorées (Frame). Bel exemplaire.Impressionnante reproduction de cette collection de croquis à la sanguine de Jean et François Clouet recueillie par Catherine de Médicis et qui a abouti dans des circonsatnces peu élucidées au Castle Howard : la première mention qui en est faite est due à Alexandre Lenoir, qui fait remonter son acquisition par le cinquième duc de Carlisle à un achat en Flandres à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Comme l'on sait, cette collection de 311 pièces fut achetée en 1889 par le duc d'Aumale (1822-1897) et se trouve désormais à Chantilly.

         Insectivorous Plants.

      London: John Murray,, 1875. With illustrations. Octavo. Original green bead-grain cloth neatly rebacked with the original gilt lettered and decorated spine laid down, corners refurbished, blind panelled covers, brown coated endpapers. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. 30 wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Endpapers chipped at fore edge. A very good copy. First edition, of the first printing of a thousand copies. Presentation copy, inscribed in a secretarial hand on the half-title "From the author"; it was customary for Murray's clerk, at the direction of Darwin, to so inscribe copies for presentation. With, tipped to verso of half-title, an autograph note signed by Darwin: "I have told my publisher to send a copy of my Insectivorous Plants to your private address, which I hope that you will accept, & do not trouble yourself to acknowledge its receipt. - My dear Sir yours v[er]y sincerely Ch. Darwin". Inscribed in pencil on the front free endpaper "Masters" (and with some pencilled marginalia and a newspaper clipping concerning insectivorous plants loosely inserted); this is the botanist and journal editor Maxwell Tylden Masters (1833-1907), who kept up a long correspondence with Darwin, and whose father, William, a nurseryman, is described by Freeman as a "friendly correspondent of CD" (Charles Darwin: A Companion). Insectivorous Plants was reviewed in The Gardener's Chronicle while under Masters's editorship. Darwin's "meticulous studies [of insectivorous plants] form a minor contribution to the evolutionary series by the study of the adaptations of such plants to impoverished conditions" (Freeman). Masters himself was a specialist in plant teratology, or the study of malformations and abnormal growth, an area that also greatly interested Darwin, particularly with regard to that effect in peloric orchids. "The book was published on 2 July, 1875, in a standard binding without inserted advertisements. It is stated that 3,000 were printed, of which 2,700 were sold to the trade at once. This cannot be strictly true because both the second and third thousands of the same year stated their thousands on the title pages" (ibid.). An appealing association copy, pairing the great naturalist and one of the most distinguished English botanists of the second half of the 19th century.

         Designs for Encaustic and Geometric Tile Pavement (Spine title)

      Stoke-on-Trent, England: The Campbell Brick and Tile Co. (and) Robert Minton Taylor Tile Works, 1875. Hardbound. Ex library. Plates are clean and vibrant. Library buckram binding. 36 color lithographed pages. All plates bear the stamp in light blue ink of "T. Aspinwall & Son, Sole Agents, 38 Murray Street, NY" at the top of the page. There are 26 plates representing works from the Campbell Brick and Tile Co. with a common logo at the top of the page (this logo includes reference to awards given to them in Dublin in 1872 and Vienna in 1873); there are two plates from this company with a variant logo; there are 8 plates representing work from Robert Minton Taylor Tile Works. It can be noted that the plates from The Campbell Brick and Tile Company list Colin Minton Campbell as the Proprietor, and Robert Minton Taylor as the Manager. The colors in these lithographed plates are extraordinary in their freshness and brightness. There is minor offsetting in spots, and the 8 Fulton plates are printed on slightly thicker stock. These plates would appear to date from 1869 to 1874. The other plates would appear to date from 1875 or after, which is when the Campbell Brick and Tile Company came into existence. Online research indicates many court cases involving Minton, Campbell and Tile manufacture at the time, and the myriad uses of the Minton name by Campbell. The plates illustrate different patterns of tile works that could be ordered (by number, which is unique to each plate illustration. While there does not appear to be duplication in these numbers, they presented in chronological order and the count is not continuous and unbroken. This is sold as a collection of extremely rare color lithographs of English tiles and tile-patterns that were available in the United States from the mid-1870s onward from these manufacturers. Only the University of Rochester appears to have anything similar to this publication, and their record states their copy to have 48 plates but there is no further description. I would not say this publication is missing plates based solely on that reference.
