        Hong Kong Harbour

Hong Kong, ca. 1875 Albumen print, mounted. 9 x 11 ½ inches. Printed caption mounted beneath photograph: "No. 941. - Cargo-boats and native crafts..." This fine photograph by Lai Fong, who has long been considered "the most significant Chinese photographer of the nineteenth-century," offers an excellent glimpse of old Hong Kong's crowded harbor (Bennett). Traditional Chinese junks and sampans fill the waterfront view. During the 19th century the "harbor was at the very center of Hong Kong's attraction and contributed more than anything else to its growing importance. It was a safe, well-sheltered, convenient anchorage, and very beautiful." (Lim, Forgotten Souls, 158.) Hong Kong Harbor was praised for the prosperity it brought to the city as well as its beauty. This photograph shows the bustling waterfront and those who inhabited the junks and sampans moored in the Fragrant Harbor over a century ago.

Ensayo ornitológico de los troquilideos ó colibríes de México por Rafael Montes de Oca Miembro de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural.

Imprenta de Ignacio Escalante, Bajos de San Agustin Num 1, Mexico 1875 - "Fine Hand Colored Lithographs of Mexican Humming Birds". 4to (11 1/2x8 inches); tinted lithographed portrait of the author, 12 lithograph plates of hummingbirds (some with flowers) with original beautiful hand coloring, a few attributed to Hesiquio Iriarte, after original artwork by author-artist.; modern crushed black morocco; original front wrapper bound in. FIRST EDITION OF THIS PIONEERING WORK ON MEXICAN HUMMINGBIRDS by a talented Mexican ornithologist and illustrator, with the descriptions linked to the illustrations by numbers. In total, forty-eight species are listed, and forty-six are illustrated. A native of Mexico, Rafael Montes de Oca (fl. 1859-1880s) was a scientific illustrator, artist, teacher of drawing and languages, and naturalist who wrote, researched, and collected birds and plants of Mexico. Montes de Oca worked as a naturalist on the Mexican-Guatemalan Boundary Commission and collected many plant specimens that are now deposited in the herbarium of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Montes de Oca was a friend and colleague of both naturalist Dr. Manuel María Villada (1841-1922), founding member and longtime president of the Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural, and Mexican painter José María Velasco (1840-1912), who made Mexican geography a symbol of national identity through his paintings. Carolina Amor de Fournier, in her introduction to Hummingbirds and Orchids, describes them as a trio of nature enthusiasts who were often in the field together. Velasco also illustrated botanical, zoological, paleontological, and geological publications. In some instances Velasco modeled his detailed anatomical drawings on the scientist Montes de Oca's specimens. Two of the illustrations in the present work are listed as Velasco's in the exhaustive National Homage, José María Velasco (Mexico, 1993). Fine Bird Books, p. 95.         Fornicazioni di Fra Mazzapicchio edite per cura di Diego Martelli fiorentino ed illustrate da Telemaco Signorini

Nistri, 1875. Delizioso libro d'artista impresso in soli 100 esemplari dichiarati all'ultima carta.

FUGAKU HYAKKEI: THE HUNDRED VIEWS OF MT. FUJI.

[Nagoya 1875, Tohekido]. Blue stitched stiff wrs.,3 vol. set very good, vol.2 original leaf 15 missing, provided in photo copy, else contents complete, clean, clear images, tones of gray, Sumi, black, indigo blue, 16 x 24 cm. R A R E *** *** FUGAKU HYAKKEI: 100 VIEWS OF MT. FUJI HOKUSAI'S MOST FAMOUS BOOK ON MT. FUJI. COLOR WOODBLOCK-PRINTED ON HAND-MAID WASHI PAPER A CLASSIC ! KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI [1760-1849]: Hokusai's most famous work in book form, illustrating a profusion of views of Mt. Fuji from all perspectives. This book was also the prototype for his great color woodblock print series on Mt. Fuji. A delightful and impressive work, considered a classic for over a hundred years. This monograph is devoted to Japan's most sacred Mt. Fuji in all its glory, portrayed in various seasons and as seen by common folk as they go about their daily lives and daily occupations. THE INTRODUCTION: The introduction was written by Hokusai on the first two pages of volume one. THE COMPLETE SET OF 3 VOLUMES: The volumes are about 22.5 x 15.5 cm.[size of some editions may vary], 25+25+25 double folded leaves or 150 pages in all, with illustrations of Mt. Fuji on 144 pages, 6 pages of Japanese text. The history of the various editions and volume count are complex, the work was originally issued complete in two volumes, which included all pages found in the 3 volume set. The set of 3 volumes is no different that those bound in 2 volumes. The binding format was a choice made by binders. The usual format is 3 volumes. THE EDITIONS: There were two main editions: the FIRST EDITION, published in 1834-5 was bound in pink stiff stitched covers, commonly called "FALCON FEATHERS." All later editions are reprints with various dates, bound in yellow, blue, purple, green, black and several other variants. Contents remains the same, it would be a matter of quality of impression. The later editions do not always have a colophon, or date. Some editions do show publisher's information and date. Other copies may have been rebound omitting the colophon. There is no 'standard' relationship between date and color of binding, however we have had many editions and copies, information below reflects this history: In 1875 [Meiji 8th year], reprint, bound in either yellow covers with green printed title slips or blue covers with red printed title slips. In 1877 [Meiji 10th year] reprint in black covers with red printed title slips. A late [final?] reprint in 1940, with yellow covers. All of the above were woodblock printed editions on Washi [hand-made] paper. The contents is identical regardless of edition. The volume size varied by a few centimeters, mostly a difference of the top or bottom margins. The quality of the reprints are determined by the freshness of the impression and registry. As the original woodblocks wore down and warped, they were replaced with new blocks. Some later editions were printed from very worn, poor quality original blocks, others from a mixed variety of old and new blocks, quality varies in each copy. Please visit our website to see the editions currently in stock. Photos posted to our website may not reflect the exact copies in stock, but are 'generic' examples of the contents. THE SUBJECT: MT. FUJI, JAPAN'S MOST SACRED SYMBOL: The work is marvelous, it shows Mt. Fuji portrayed in the daily life of the common people. In the spring time, how ordinary Japanese sat outdoors and viewed the cherry blossoms with Mt. Fuji in the background. Mt. Fuji was always present in daily life as a background. The composition, artistry and skill of Hokusai is without parallel. The book illustrates his unique talent and drawing skills. His artistry pictured Mt. Fuji in myriad scenes, early morning, evening, rain and cloudy days. The mystical quality of Mt. Fuji demonstrates the great respect Hokusai felt, showing the great grandeur of the sacred mountain. Hokusai used acute visual composition concepts, insight and visionary-like "Avant-garde" talent to impress viewers to identify with the splendor of Mt. Fuji. Hokusai is still hailed as Japan's greatest artist of the 19th century. His woodblock printed books and printed command solid prices. THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE THREE VOLUMES: There was a complete English translation of the set and each page. Please visit our website and search for F.V. Dickins, 1960 which is stock. See below for more details. CONDITION NOTE: We may have different dated editions, each copy has been described, not all are in the same condition. Please inquire about any particular edition for more details. Photos posted to our site are 'generic' and represent the general examples of the book & its illustrations. Copies, prices vary. The 1877 edition has a small mend at the last page, the colophon in vol. 3, else very clean, nice. DICKINS TRANSLATION: TWO EDITIONS: WITH ENGLISH TRANSLATION & ILLUSTRATIONS: a. F.V.         The Works of Jefferies. With: The Eulogy of Richard Jefferies, by Walter Besant (1888). Complete in first editions, containing: Restless Human Hearts, Wildlife in a Southern Country, Greene Ferne Farm, Hodge and His Masters, World's End, Story of my Heart, The Toilers of the Field, Life of the Fields, The Open Air, Round About a Great Estate, Bevis, Amateur Poacher, Amaryllis at the Fair, Wood Magic, Field and Hedgerow, Scarlet Shawl, Red Deer, The Dewy Morn, Nature Near London, After London or Wild England, and The Gamekeeper at Home

London, 1875- 1887. FIRST EDITIONS of 22 titles bound in 31 volumes. Attractive contemporary binding by Bradstreet's of deep red half morocco, marbled boards and end papers, top edges gilt. Bookplate to all volumes. Pages edges slightly age toned. A superb set. The set comprises all the books, fiction and non fiction, published during Jefferies' lifetime, as well as 2 titles posthumously published, Field and Hedgerow (1889) and The Toilers of the Fields (1892). Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) is best known for his prolific and sensitive writing on natural history, rural life and agriculture in late Victorian England. However, a closer examination of his career reveals a many-sided author who was something of an enigma. To some people he is more familiar as the author of the children's classic Bevis or the strange futuristic fantasy After London (the central theme of which is unstoppable nature reclaiming its birthright after the collapse of civilisation), while he also has some reputation as a mystic worthy of serious study. Since his death his books have enjoyed intermittent spells of popularity, but today he is unknown to the greater part of the reading public. Jefferies, however, has been an inspiration to a number of more prominent writers and W.H. Hudson, Edward Thomas, Henry Williamson and John Fowles are among those who have acknowledged their debt to him. In my view his greatest achievement lies in his expression, aesthetically and spiritually, of the human encounter with the natural world - something that became almost an obsession for him in his last years (Simon Coleman).

Manuscript Brewer's Journal of Bedford Brewery Newland & Nash, with Detailed Beer Making Methodology.

Bedford, 1875-1898., 1875. Manuscript brewer's journal of Claude Edmund Clark, Managing Director of the Bedford brewery Newland & Nash, containing detailed notes on systems and processes for making beer, with calculations, recipes, as well as discoveries and inventions by leading scientists of the period including Louis Pasteur, Dr. Charles Graham, Justus Freiherr von Liebig, and brewing expert William Littell Tizard, featuring one manuscript drawing and pertinent contemporary newspaper clippings mounted within. Ownership inscription on fly leaf dated January 1875. 8vo. 192 pages. Black calf boards, brass clasp without key, marbled edges, marbled endpapers. Wear to binding, a scant few leaves excised, otherwise in very good condition, fascinating early methodology for brewing beer and making liquor. The author of the present volume went to great lengths to ensure quality beer was produced. This is evidenced in his travels within and beyond the county of Bedfordshire, to observe specific methods of other brewers, and with his frequent references to the works of Louis Pasteur, Dr. Charles Graham, Justus Freiherr von Liebig, and brewing expert William Littell Tizard. Claude Edmund Clark Esq., remembered mainly for his work with the Newland & Nash brewery in Bedford, was brewing from at least January 1875, according to the early entries in the present volume. He was listed as a brewer, resident of St Johns, Bedford, when on 10 June 1886 he married Anne Elizabeth Whitworth of Kempston. On 7 August 1887 they had a daughter whom they named Violet Adaline. On 29 May 1893 they gave birth to a son, Claude Stanley Clark, who would also become a brewer. His father, William Chignell Clark, was a schoolmaster. Newland & Nash began as a malthouse in 1783, expanded rapidly for several decades, and became a public limited company in 1897. Clark was secretary Debenture Trustee of the Limited Company by 1898, and possibly in 1897 immediately upon incorporating. He held this title until 8 Jun 1937, and by 1940 he was listed as the Director of the brewery according to records held in the Bedfordshire Archives. . Manuscript.

A map on pages 102-103 shows our country before Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland were provinces. The rear has listings of cities, villages, post offices, etc. and business cards for patrons of the atlas. Few of these books remain because they're often taken apart for individual map sales. This copy is much used but complete and still magnificent.

Chiushingura, or The Loyal League, A Japanese Romance, with Notes and an Appendix Containing a Metrical Version of the Ballad of Takasago, and Specimens of Original Text in the Japanese Character

Printed at the Japanese Gazette Office, Yokohama 1875 - Near Fine, unread copy in original taupe wrappers. Spine uncreased and smooth; small tear at upper spine; corners gently bumped. Ink ownership signature inside front cover, below a small pasted in label from a Western bookseller in Yokohama. Text block tight. Internally clean and complete, with extra title page in Japanese, 29 blue colored woodcut plates, and a preface and facsimile of Japanese text included at end. An exceptional copy of this rare book that only appears thrice in modern auction records, and is held by only one institution. A wildly popular Japanese romance made accessible to audiences by Takeda Itsumo's 1748 kabuki play, Frederick Dickins' Chiushingura introduced the nobility and courage of the 47 Ronin to the Western world. Previously adapted in 1871 by A. B. Mitford as the first chapter of his collection Tales of Old Japan, it would not be until 1875 that a translation sought to accurately open the world of the samurai and ronin to English speakers. Expressing appreciation for Mitford's "admirable" and "pleasant" rendition of the tale of the 47 ronin, Dickins nevertheless sets his work apart as a scholarly translation, performed with care to the spirit and meaning of the Japanese original, and which includes untranslated Japanese when wordplay or meaning simply does not have an appropriate English pairing. Ultimately, Dickins aims to introduce Westerners to "old world manners and already obsolete sentiments, a curious medieval system that has lasted down to our own time." Chiushingura, or The Loyal League's story and illustrations were well received, and it was reprinted soon after in 1876 and 1880, with few of the 1875 originals surviving today. Near Fine. [2 volumes + Atlas].

Paris:: Gauthier-Villars, 1875, 1877., 1875. 2 volumes + Atlas. Tall 8vo. xx, 428; viii, 484 pp. Atlas: [iv], 6 engraved double-page plates. 13 plates, 280 figs. (some in color). MEMORIAL BOOKLET BOUND IN: Padre Angelo Sechi (In More del Padre Angelo Secchi, Canto Dell'Avvocato B. Mattiauda. Roma: Tipografia Delle Scienze Matematiche e Fisiche, 1878.14 pp). Later half maroon gilt-stamped morocco, marbled boards, raised bands, top edge gilt, initials of owner on foot of spine. Signatures and armorial bookplates of Samuel Verplanck Hoffman. Very good. Second edition. "By observing sunspots at various solar latitudes, Secchi determined that the Sun had a differential rotation and behaves more like a liquid than a solid body. He named the bright areas around sunspots 'faculae', deduced (correctly) that solar granulation was attributed to the action of convection cells, and measured the effect of limb darkening. / Secchi's solar studies were summarized in Le Soleil, published in 1875-1877, in which Secchi related the observed surface phenomena to an overall model of the Sun's structure. He took the Sun to be composed mainly of gas and subject to complex circulation, with surface eruptions driven by an unrecognized force (later found to be magnetic fields)." - Thomas Hockey, Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers, p. 1040. / "Angelo Secchi, an Italian astronomer, died Feb. 26, 1878, at age 59. Secchi was a Jesuit and spent most of his life with the Observatory of the Roman College in Rome, serving as its Director from 1850 until his death. Secchi observed the planets and stars from the roof of the Church of St. Ignatius, which gives the term "study of the heavens" a rich double meaning (second image). Secchi is best known for his work in solar and stellar spectroscopy. Spectroscopy had been founded in 1859, with the discovery that the dark lines in the solar spectrum could be used to identify the elements in the sun. Secchi expanded spectroscopy to include the stars, whose spectra were much more difficult to observe. Secchi discovered that stars come in different "spectral types," with some stars, like the Sun, having many dark lines, while others, like Sirius and Vega, have many fewer lines. He identified four kinds of stars, which he called Types I, II, III, and IV (third image). These designations would be used until they were superseded by the OBAFGKM system proposed at Harvard around the turn of the 20th century. Secchi's stellar types were illustrated by attractive chromolithographs in his book Le Soleil (1870) ... the second French edition (1875) and the first German edition (1872)." - Linda Hall Library - Dr. William B. Ashworth, Jr. PROVENANCE: Samuel Verplanck Hoffman (1866-1942) graduated from Harvard with a degree in mechanical engineering, and from Johns Hopkins with a graduate degree in astronomy, however he devoted most of his life to managing his father's extensive properties in New York City. He was a member of the New York Historical Society for over 40 years, serving as president from 1903 to 1913.

It is partially framed with portraits of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire the Emperor Matthias is at the top center, and Friedrich, the Elector Palatine who would become Matthias enemy, next to him. Like the multiple dedications of the Thesaurus graecae linguae, this title-page suggests the irenic potential of lexicography, offering a dictionary for all German-speakers just before the war that would set one German-speaking community so bitterly against another..."         Photograph Gaudenzio Marconi Nude woman Large vintage photo Paris 1875c

1875 - Large original vintage albumen photo. Nude. Author: Gaudenzio Marconi. Year: 1875c. Size of the photo: 27x20 cm. Condition: very good. Gaudenzio Marconi (Italy 1841 - Paris 1885) Born in Italy in 1841. We have little information about his short life, but there is no doubt that he played a significant role in the development of artistic photography of the nineteenth century. He arrived in Paris in 1869 and became a photographer of nudes, which provided academic painters and sculptors of the period, such as Auguste Rodin. The nudes by Rodin known as "the Bronze Age" are based on works by Gaudenzio Marconi. His best pictures are dated between 1870 and 1875. In life he was recognized as a photographer of nudes for artists. The classic use of the pose and light, the addition of classical objects or backdrops painted with cherubs and mythological elements is an important feature of his work. He died in Paris in 1885 at the age of 44 years. Like so many other great artists, he never had the good fortune to witness the success of his work. Today his photographs reach remarkable prices in major international auctions.
