It is partially framed with portraits of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire the Emperor Matthias is at the top center, and Friedrich, the Elector Palatine who would become Matthias enemy, next to him. Like the multiple dedications of the Thesaurus graecae linguae, this title-page suggests the irenic potential of lexicography, offering a dictionary for all German-speakers just before the war that would set one German-speaking community so bitterly against another..."          Photograph Gaudenzio Marconi Nude woman Large vintage photo Paris 1875c

1875 - Large original vintage albumen photo. Nude. Author: Gaudenzio Marconi. Year: 1875c. Size of the photo: 27x20 cm. Condition: very good. Gaudenzio Marconi (Italy 1841 - Paris 1885) Born in Italy in 1841. We have little information about his short life, but there is no doubt that he played a significant role in the development of artistic photography of the nineteenth century. He arrived in Paris in 1869 and became a photographer of nudes, which provided academic painters and sculptors of the period, such as Auguste Rodin. The nudes by Rodin known as "the Bronze Age" are based on works by Gaudenzio Marconi. His best pictures are dated between 1870 and 1875. In life he was recognized as a photographer of nudes for artists. The classic use of the pose and light, the addition of classical objects or backdrops painted with cherubs and mythological elements is an important feature of his work. He died in Paris in 1885 at the age of 44 years. Like so many other great artists, he never had the good fortune to witness the success of his work. Today his photographs reach remarkable prices in major international auctions.

Cabinet Card Photograph of a Woman by a St. Louis Professional Woman Photographer

Mrs. J.H. Fitzgibbon, Photographer, St. Louis 1875 - Measuring 4.5" x 6" image on a very slightly larger card with the back mark of Mrs. Fitzgibbon and her studio address on Olive Street in St. Louis. Slight wear, just about fine. Nicely composed image of an unidentified woman, possibly an actress, in a fancy, Little Bo Peep-esque outfit adorned with a large show hat.Louisa M. Dennis of Buffalo, New York (later Mrs. J.H. Fitzgibbon) founded the St. Louis studio with her husband in 1869. She took over the studio on Olive Street in 1875 when her husband retired; he died in the sleeping car of a train in 1882. At about that time she sold the studio and in 1883 founded the long-running photographic journal The St. Louis Photographer (which took over from The Practical Photographer which she and her husband had founded upon his retirement) and which conducted business under that name until 1887, when it became The St. Louis and Canadian Photographer, which ran until 1910 or later. She later remarried and conducted business as Mrs. Fitzgibbon-Clark.John H. Fitzgibbon, was a pioneering photographer. He took up photography in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1839 upon the announcement of the Daguerrian process. He later set up a studio in St. Louis, and then still later in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was caught trying to run the blockade during the Civil War in order to flee the city and was sent to Cuba. After the War he was returned to New York City, where he met and married Louisa M. Dennis. At the time of his death a contemporary periodical note the he was "the oldest photographer in the country, save one" (at age 65!).A nice image by an entrepreneurial woman who was both a pioneering western woman photographer and a journalist-publisher. Her work is represented in the Julia Driver Collection of Women in Photography at Yale.

The story is seen here translated into English for the first time, with beautifully printed examples of Japanese wood block printing and calligraphy. NB. The plate list indicates two plates at page 25, but research suggests that this is incorrect, the reality being only one plate will be found at page 25. Phillips, les applications de l’electricite a l’horlogerie et la description d’une sà rie d’appareils spà ciaux se rattachant a l’art de l’horloger / par M. A. Debize. Three volumes

Paris, Dunod 1875 - Enlarged third edition with the inclusion of a supplement as an extra volume (pt. 3) as well as the inclusion of twenty extra plates (seventy plates in total). Supplement contains technical developments since the earlier two editions, and include: Moinet Debize on exhausts, the conical pendulum, the annular balance, the application of electricity to horology, and a reissue of Phillips on the theory of Spiral setting. Two heavy quarto sized volumes in publisher's original printed paper or soft-cover bindings and rough-cut edges. Vol I pp: viii, 448; frontispiece & 20 pull-out plates,Vol II pp: [iv],551; frontis; 204; 31 pull-out plates (pt. I), 19 pull-out plates (pt. II) Binding copies only with text-block of second volume in two pieces (text-block pieces themselves are sturdy), and remaining fragile covers (rear cover of vol I missing) are tatty and worn, Main text and all seventy plates however, are all present, and leaves appear mostly unopened over the two volumes, beginning from ch.4 of vol I onwards. Text also clean, although there is light foxing to many leaves from vol I, and to most leaves in first part of vol II. There are other faults: rear cover of second volume (appendix) has come away from text-block, and has a large corner tear with loss (affecting printed border); last four leaves in index of vol II are loose, and include the last two entries or lines in this index being torn away - although as mentioned above, main text is complete; and six plates from the appendix are loose and tatty with ragged edges and tears (illustrations not affected), and have age-dulled. However, the rest of the plates (all 64 of them) are in neat, crisp condition. Very scarce as a third edition, And very worthy as a binding copy. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy item and extra towards delivery cost may be requested. An enquiry is recommended - especially for overseas delivery.

         Tarikh al-Kkanisah al-Masihiyyah al-Qadimah wa-al-Hadithah.

America University of Beirut, Beirut 1875 - 853 pp., Arabic text, contemporary full calf, rubbed, title gilt on raised spine, translated from Latin by Jacob Murdoch, edited by Father Henry Hurse Jessup. Johann Lorenz von Mosheim or Johann Lorenz Mosheim (1693 – 1755) was a German Lutheran church historian. After studying at the high school in Lübeck, he entered the University of Kiel (1716), where he took his master's degree in 1718. In 1719 he became assessor in the philosophical faculty at Kiel. His works, along with the reputation he had acquired as a lecturer and preacher, secured for him a place at University of Helmstedt as professor ordinarius in 1723. The "Institutionum historiae ecclesiasticae libri IV" appeared in 1726. Mosheim was much consulted by the authorities when the new University of Göttingen was being formed, especially in the framing of the statutes of the theological faculty, and the provisions for making the theologians independent of the ecclesiastical courts. In 1747 he was made the chancellor of the University. In 1748 he was responsible for the visit made by George II of Great Britain to his university. Mosheim wrote "An Ecclesiastical History, From The Birth of Christ to the Beginning of the Eighteenth Century", in which the rise, progress and variation of Church power are considered in their connection with the state of learning and philosophy, and the political history of Europe during that period. It is a two-volume set, translated from Latin by Archibald Maclaine, and was published in London in 1842 by William Tyler. This work was translated from Latin by the American scholar Jacob Murdoch. Provenance: Colonel Samuel B. Miles (1838-1914), diplomat in Oman and Persia, author of "The Countries and Tribes of the Persian Gulf", 1919; gifted by his widow to Bath Public Library, 1920.          Carte-de-visite Photograph of Millie-and-Christine McCoy

Philadelphia: W. L. Germon’s Temple of Art, ca. 1875. McCoy, Millie-and-Christine. Carte-de-visite Photograph of Millie-and-Christine McCoy (1851 – 1912), the "Two-Headed Nightingale" by W. L. Germon's Temple of Art, 914 Arch Street, Philadelphia, no date, circa 1875. Mount: 10.5 cm x 6.3 cm; image 9 cm x 5.5 cm. An albumen print in fine condition. Corners rounded for album insertion. Pencil indentification on the verso. Born into slavery and at the mercy of their exploitative promoter-owners, the Emancipation Proclamation ended the McCoy twins' slavery in 1863. Having been kidnapped and taken to England, the twins received their education and musical training there and began to enjoy success as instrumentalists and singers, thus turning their impediment into an asset, before returning to the United States and appearing in Barnum's circus.

Braunschweig, C. A. Schwetschke und Sohn, 1865 - 1875 (Bd. 1 in zweiter Auflage). Jahrhunderts in anschaulicher Weise widerspiegelt. Weitere Fotos auf der Homepage des Antiquariats (bitte Art.-Nr. auf der Angebotsseite in das Suchfeld eingeben).

De La Demonialite Et Des Animaux Incubes Et Succubes.

Isidore Liseux,, Paris: 1875 - Pagination: XVI, 224p. Modern black cloth over pebbled boards, gilt rules, title to spine in gilt on red label. Original paper wrappers bound-in, minor soiling, back wrapper with some staining at bottom, and old tape repair to bottom edge, no affect, else covers still excellent. Leaf edges uncut, a very clean copy with just a few foxing spots, no affect, overall contents about fine. Title page in red and black print, with small vignette. Text in Latin & French. We locate only one other copy for sale at time of description. Excellent copy of a very rare book. English translation: Demoniality and incubus and succubus animals where it is proved that there exist on earth reasonable creatures other than man, having like him a body and soul. This rare text limited to less than 600 copies in its first printing and sold out immediately, has long been thought a wonder. Sinistrari (1622-1701) was for a long time considered by many a fictitious author and the manuscript Liseux describes in the preface( he states from the Seymour sale of 1871) non existent. The catalog listing was indeed later found lost at Harvard University and Sinistrari is author of several now known works of philosophy and the occult. The book describes incubi and succubi as not being demons, but having body and soul, which allows them to copulate with humans and reproduce - separating them from Satan (being devil demons), and suggesting they are more like evil animals in more of a human form. Wheeler (ed.) Report upon geographical and geological explorations and surveys west of the hundredth meridian. Vol. V. Zoology]

      - Washington, DC, Government Printing Office, 1875. Large 4to (28.4 x 22.5 cm). General title page, pp. 9-20, Title page (to the ornithology part), pp. 133-507, 977-989, 15 chromolithographed plates. Later full cloth with red morocco label with gilt title on the spine. Floral patterned endpapers. = This is the complete bird section of these very elaborate explorations which included much new data on North American natural history, in particular of the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Rim. This is the offprint, hence its rather peculiar page numbering. The plates, by Robert Ridgeway are of very high quality. Many depict new taxa. Henry Wetherbee Henshaw (1850-1929) was an American ornithologist. He joined the Wheeler Expedition as a naturalist, so these are the results of his personal collecting activities. Boards worn at extremities. Small smudge on front board. Pictorial bookplate on front free endpaper verso, and library chart on rear pastedown. Titles, text and plates clean. Rare, especially in a good condition such as this. Nissen IVB, 437; Nissen ZBI, 4756; Zimmer, pp. 298, 670 (under Wheeler). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
