TIMOK, BULGARIA & SERBIA: ????? ?? ???????? ????? ?? ??????? ?????? [KARTA OD BALEJSKE ZEMLJE NA SRBSKOJ STRANI / MAP OF BALEI LAND ON THE SERBIAN SIDE]

[Serbia and Bulgaria, June ]. 1873 - Pan and pencil drawing on paper (Good, soft folds with small tears and loss of image, old repaired tear on the left-hand side) 25 x 40 cm A unique hand drawing of the land around Balei, what is today the northmost point of Bulgaria, in Serbian Cyrillic and Ottoman Turkish was made in 1873, to establish a new border between the Ottoman Empire and Serbia. A unique hand-drawing in ink embraces the area of what is today the northmost point of Bulgaria on the river Timor, close to the town Balei, on the border with Serbia. The map shows the land between a course of the Timok river, going from the south to north part on the right-hand side, and a course of so called Old Timok – a partly dried river course, closed by a Turkish damp in the south. The notes are written in Serbian Cyrillic and in Ottoman Turkish and the map is confirmed by official Ottoman stamps and Serbian and Turkish signatures. The map was drawn in 1873, when new borders between the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans countries were set. In the same year the Banat Military Frontier, today split between Serbia and Romania, was disestablished. In 1876, Serbia declared war on the Ottoman Empire, proclaiming its unification with Bosnia. The formal independence of Serbia was internationally recognized at the Congress of Berlin in 1878.

         The Women of the Arabs.

      - New York, Dodd & Mead, [1873]. 8vo. Original rust cloth, lettered and decorated in black and gilt; pp. x, 371, wood-engraved plates with tissue guards; very light marking and bubbling to cloth, evenly a little toned as usual, a few pages and plates a little brown-spotted; ownership inscription to front paste-down; a very good copy. First edition, very rare. Probably one of the earliest work dealing with the role of women in society and female edocation in and around Lebanon and Syria. 'Following his graduation from Union Theological Seminary and his subsequent ordination to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in the USA, Henry Harris Jessup was appointed as a missionary to Syria in 1855 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In 1870, when the Syria Mission was transferred from the ABCFM to the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, he thereafter served the latter. Until 1860, Jessup resided in Tripoli with his family, but spent the remainder of his missionary service in Beirut where for thirty years he was acting pastor of the Syrian Church of Beirut and superintendent of its school. He also served as secretary of the Asfuriyeh Hospital for the Insane from its establishment and as a missionary editor of the Arabic Journal, El Nesrah. In 1866, Jessup helped found the Syrian Protestant College, now the American University of Beirut. Besides serving as moderator of the 1879 General Assembly, Jessup authored several works about his mission experience in Syria. He died in service and was buried in Beirut' (Presbyterian Historical Society, online). His autobiography, Fifty Three Years in Syria of 1910 is equally rare, i.e. I can't find it at all. Smith J21 ('an authoritative work by a long-time missionary to Syria'). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

         Autobiography.

Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer, 1873. 8vo. Original pebble-grained cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, boards ruled in black; pp. vi, 313, [2, advertisements]; previous owner's signature to initial blank; rear inner hinge a little weakened, lightly toned; a very good copy. First edition, first issue (without errata). The autobigraphy of the great philosopher is perhaps most famous for its depiction of the astounding educational regime through which he was put by his father: 'it has excited universal astonishment... At the age of three the boy could read Greek; by the time he was eight he was reading Plato and Herodotus and an incredible quantity of historical writing; at twelve he has embarked on Aristotle's works on logic, Adam Smith and Ricardo' (PMM 345). Mill goes on to describe his almost inevitable mental collapse in 1826 and the importance of the experience to his philosophy. Rather than allowing himself to become the unemotional, remote intellectual of his father's design, he began to realise the significance of the individual and personal liberty. This act of autobiography is as much a way of the author realising himself as an individual as it is an adjunct to his great works On Liberty and On the Subjugation of Women.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

James R. Osgood and Company, Boston 1873 - First American edition of Verne's masterpiece. Octavo, original blue cloth. With "The End" printed on page 303, illustrated with 109 plates, including two maps, with jellyfish on the front board, and the incorrect use of the word "Sea" in the title on front board. In very good condition with some rubbing and wear to the extremities and a small stain to the page edges. Although the reason for the scarcity is unknown, it is speculated that most of the Osgood copies were destroyed in the Great Boston Fire. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "Twenty Thousand Leagues owed much to the exploits of the huge experimental French submarine Le Plongeur and to the work of Verne’s friend Jacques-François Conseil, who developed a steam-driven submarine and whose surname Verne gave to Professor Arronax’s servant in the story" (Carpenter & Prichard, 557). Verne combined science and invention with fast-paced adventure. Some of Verne's fiction has also become a fact: his submarine Nautilus predated the first successful power submarine by a quarter century, and his spaceship predicted the development a century later. The first all-electric submarine, built in 1886, was named Nautilus in honor of Verne's vessel. The first nuclear-powered submarine, launched in 1955, was named Nautilus, too. The film version was produced by Walt Disney in 1954 and directed by Richard Fleischer, won an Oscar for its special effects. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
