The History of Don Quixote, by Cervantes

Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, London - Folio, two volumes, circa 1870. Extra-illustrated. Famous Doré illustrated edition of Cervantes with 120 full-page wood-engravings and 257 head- and tail-pieces by Gustave Doré, engraved by Héliodore Pisan. This set is quite unusual and unique: someone has carefully and meticulously bound in a total of 100 extra plates (45 in Vol 1, 55 in Vol2), many from an earlier edition published in 1817 by Cadell and Davies, Strand London. Some from a French translation and still others undetermined. Handsomely bound in three-quarter green calf with marbled paper sides, five raised bands and gilt titling. The English-language edition of Doré’s Don Quixote first appeared in 30 monthly parts, beginning in December 1864. In September of 1866 Cassell announced the publication of Don Quixote in book form. Title-page printed in red and black. Two folio volumes, hinges cracked and rear covers detached on both volumes. Internally clean and unmarked. All plates and illustrations intact and clean.          In Fairyland A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World. With a Poem, by William Allingham.

London Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer 1870 - Richard Doyle’s Masterpiece [DOYLE, Richard, illustrator]. ALLINGHAM, William. In Fairyland. A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World. With a Poem, by William Allingham. London: Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870 [i.e., 1869]. First edition, published at Christmas 1869 and post-dated 1870. Folio (14 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches; 377 x 274 mm.). [8], 31, [1, blank] pp. Frontispiece and fifteen plates, engraved on wood and printed in color by Edmund Evans. Original green morocco-grain cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and decoratively stamped in gilt on spine. Back cover ruled in blind. All edges gilt. Some very minor marginal soiling to a few leaves, but the plates are totally free from the foxing found in almost all copies. A wonderful example of what is considered Richard Doyle’s masterpiece. "It is generally felt that Richard Doyle rose to his greatest heights with the graceful clusters of humanized and sentimentalized but endearing little elves he created for In Fairyland. In the case of this book the pictures preceded the text, a situation not uncommon in the history of illustrated children’s books. The Irish poet William Allingham wrote verses to accompany Doyle’s colorful fantasies. Edmund Evans produced the colored engravings; they are among the very finest examples of his work. Doyle’s illustrations for In Fairyland were used again, in 1884, to illustrate Princess Nobody, an original fairy tale for children by Andrew Lang" (Morgan Library, Early Children’s Books). Engen, Doyle, p. 197. Morgan Library, Early Children’s Books, 168. Muir, Victorian Illustrated Books, p. 102. Osborne Collection II, p. 619. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, 146.          View of the Acropolis from the Musaeum Hill from The Acropolis of Athens (Plate 1)

London: S.F. Ellis, 1870 Oval, 7½ x 9 ½ in. Carbon print on original mount. Some minor browning. Fine condition. This photograph is the first view from W. J. Stillman's, The Acropolis of Athens, a series of 25 photographs taken in 1869 and published together the following year. The 25 photographs open with four longer views of the Acropolis, eventually spiraling in toward the Parthenon. Scholar Andrew Szegedy-Maszak notes that this well-known first photograph in the series "exemplifies [Stillman's] pictorial practice." The Athenian Acropolis, one of the most famous landmarks of Ancient Greece, has been an important cultural and religious location since the 3rd millennium BCE. The most prominent building on the Acropolis, the Parthenon, was constructed between 447 and 438 BCE as a temple to Athena, although it eventually went on to serve as both a Christian church and a Muslim mosque. In this photograph, one can see a bell tower that was added by the Christian Franks in the 13th century. It was torn down only five years after Stillman's work was published. An eccentric personality who excelled in many fields, including painting, art criticism, photography and journalism, Stillman held ties with preeminent art theorist, John Ruskin, and co-founded the first serious American art journal, The Crayon. When Stillman took up his most important photographic endeavor, The Acropolis of Athens, the aesthetic and philosophical positions he had formed in his earlier career as an artist greatly influenced the composition of his photographs. As a reviewer reported in The Atlantic about one of Stillman's earlier works, "the points of view are chosen with the fine feeling of an artist.".

JECKYLL, Thomas (1827?81). Architect; Designer of Whistler's Peacock Room

      - Autograph Letter Signed ?T. Jeckyll? to ?Ionides? [probably one of Alexander ?Alec?' Ionides? four siblings]. 4 pages 8vo, 5 St Georges Terrace, Queen's Gate, Saturday morning n.d. [probably 1870, the date of his commission for 1 Holland Park]. Jeckyll is perhaps best known for being the original designer for what has come to be known as Whistler?s famous Peacock Room. It was a commission for the industrialist Frederick Richards Leyland?s house in Prince?s Gate, London and was Jeckyll?s last interiors project. Whilst executing the scheme for the dining room in 1876, Jeckyll consulted Whistler about his plans for the painted shutters and doors. Whistler, who was working simultaneously on other elements of the house, commandeered the project and continued his elaborate decorative scheme into the dining room. Jeckyll became unwell around this time and was unable to finish the project. He went mad and eventually died in an asylum in 1881, which is perhaps a reason that some consider him to be ?among the least understood and most tragic Aesthetic Movement figures in England? (Soros, Arbuthnott, Thomas Jeckyll, 2003). In this letter Jeckyll writes about the decorative tiles intended for the Billiard Room of 1 Holland Park, London, also discussing cost and expense. In 1870 the collector Alexander Constantine Ionides commissioned Jeckyll to design several rooms for this residence, notably the Billiard Room which was in the Anglo-Japanese style and was inset with Japanese paintings. ?Alecco wrote me [. . .] to look at some tiles at Wilsons and to buy them to go round the brass grate in the Billiard room if I thought well of them [. . .] they asked me £44.00 for them; and, at last, £35 when I told young Wilson who it was wants them - they [. . .] and will want repair [. . .] I do not know if Alecco has any idea of [. . .] price [. . .] Can you tell me whether your brother would be surprised at my spending £35 [. . .] till the tiles are settled I cannot finish my design for woodwork of chimney piece and the men are waiting. Tell me if in my place you wd buy the £35 worth because I have been half spoiling the work hitherto for sake of saving little sums [. . .] I really do not know Alecco's ideas abt expense.? The Victoria and Albert museum holds a perspective design for 1, Holland Park?s Billiard Room in its collections. The house was destroyed in the Second World War. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

         United States Capitol

Fine Large-format Photograph of the Capitol. This dramatic photograph of the United States Capitol shows the building ca. 1870, after the completion of the new dome and the extensions. The view shows the east side of the building, as seen from the northeast. There are signs of construction evident in the image, and a number of people and two horse-drawn carriages are visible. The photograph was taken within a few years of 1867, when the cheek blocks beside the Senate steps were installed. The photograph shows the rails for a street car system, for which termini were constructed on the Capitol grounds. Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building be called the "Capitol" rather than "Congress House." The word "Capitol" comes from Latin and is associated with the Roman temple to Jupiter Optimus Maximus on Capitoline Hill. The name, which followed the example of Virginia's House of Burgesses' "Capitoll" authorized in 1699, signified the national aspirations for a republic steeped in the ancient Roman virtues of citizenship and self-government. During the Civil War some objected to continued construction of the building, but Lincoln insisted it continue, saying, "If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union to go on." On March 4, 1865, Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address from the East Portico, visible here, declaring, "With malice toward none, with charity for all ..." The U.S. Capitol is, apart from the Statue of Liberty, the greatest symbol of America and perhaps the nation's most famous and most important single building. Albumen print, mounted. 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Mount darkened, some darkening and minimal surface wear to image, but generally in very good condition.

Abraham Lincoln] Yours truly. A. Lincoln

1870 - Steel-faced copper plate with a photogravure of Lincoln: 11 1/2 x 9 inches; image: 8 x 6 inches. Head and torso portrait of Lincoln in 3/4 profile with facsimile signature This photogravure of Abraham Lincoln is a reversed image of a photograph taken in 1858 by Alexander Hesler, to which a beard and facsimile signatuve have been added. Hesler took several excellent photo portraits of Lincoln in the days before he became President. The prints made from this plate clearly, were produced to meet the demand for portraits after the assassination, (though we have been unable to locate an example of the print). It is in any event, this is a fine memorial portrait of the President, emphasizing his calmness and seriousness.

Das Buch vom Schwarzen Adler-Orden. (Die Preussischen Orden, Ehrenzeichen u. Auszeichnungen. Geschichtlich, Bildlich, Statistisch).

Berlin, Alexander Duncker, 1870.. Two parts in one volume. Royal quarto (33x26 cm). Pp. 167; 38. Plus 8 exquisite chromolithographic plates, each with facing tissue-guard, bound at end. Wood-engraved armorial title-page. Text within woodcut decorative borders. Hardcover, binding restored in the past, original richly gilt decorated front and spine laid down, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, extremities rubbed, back scratched, corner-tips chafed, first inner hinge cracked. Light dampmark at blank margin of second part, verso and margins of last plate foxed. In good condition, very good and very clean interior, fine plates. ~ First edition. Very rare. Splendid plates with rich, dense colours and excellent gloss, beautifully finished by hand. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least nine separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than twenty. ~ Provenance: From the library of C. P. Mulder, renowned collector and international heraldry authority, with his charming armorial bookplate,"Nil Desperandum", to first free endpaper. For a complete catalogue of Mulder's library, from which we offer a considerable number of items, see: C. P. Mulder: "Catalogue of Works on Orders, Decorations and Medals in the Library of C. P. Mulder" (Rotterdam, 1988). See also: C. P. Mulder & A. A. Purves: "Bibliography of Orders and Decorations" (Copenhagen, 1999). On title-page there's an old, almost invisible small monogram stamp with royal crown, the identity of the noble owner could not be established.

The photographic archive, papers, and relics of William Kennoch, Secret Service Agent

More than 1000 photographs, more than 125 letters, extensive diaries and memoranda books, plus relics, manuscripts, and ephemera as detailed below. Very good condition overall. The photographs are preserved in two half morocco cases. Kennoch, who was born in Edinburgh in 1841, joined the Secret Service early in 1870 after a career as a cigar smuggler. He soon became an expert in counterfeiting cases. The U.S. Secret Service was created in 1865 to combat counterfeiting, which accounted for one-third of the currency then in circulation. It also investigated crimes from bank robbery and murder to illegal gambling. Kennoch (whose name was often given as "Kennock" in the books and newspapers of the day), served until his death at 46 in 1887. His obituary noted that he "was probably better acquainted with counterfeiters, their ways and haunts than any other detective in the country." Hiram C. Whitley, Chief of the Secret Service under U.S. Grant, called Kennoch one of his "ablest" agents in his autobiography. Kennoch maintained extensive photographic files containing annotated cartes de visite of fugitives, criminals and other wanted men and women. Many of the photographs are annotated with names and aliases of the perpetrators and wanted criminals, crimes committed, and conviction and arrest dates. Most are annotated with the locations and names of their photographers. This is an extraordinary archive documenting the life of a federal law officer and the criminals he tracked for more than fifteen years in post-Civil War America. In addition to the enormous photographic holdings, the collection includes many manuscripts, relics, and ephemera from Kennoch's dramatic career. This tremendous collection, reflecting American financial, social, criminal, business, and photographic history, offers limitless research and exhibition possibilities. Please inquire for details.
