A Small Archive of Manuscript Drafts of Letters, and an Autograph Letter Signed]

Various places in the UK 1870 - 17 closely-written pages in all, Some folds; light scattered soiling, toning and wear; one draft with a corner torn away; else good. A small but interesting lot written during Motley's tenure as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom comprised of the following items: [a] Autograph letter signed (initials), 6pp, 8vo, Stratfield Saye, 1 December, n.y. A long letter to his wife Mary, bemoaning his separation from her while she is in ill-health, reporting on his discussion with the Duke over possible remedies, planning doctor's appointments, sending his opinions of various social visitors, discussing changes that have been made at the Stratfield Saye (home of the Dukes of Wellington), and mentioning political appointments; [b] Autograph draft signed (scrawled initials), 3 1/4pp, 8vo, 30 June 1870. To the Queen of Holland, regretfully explaining that he has as of yet been unable to leave his post in order to visit, and writing: "I know how much distress you are now suffering from the sad intelligence of Ld C's death; I know how warm a friendship you . cherished for that distinguished & lamented statesman. He is a great loss to his country & to his sovereign . He had many of the highest qualities wh can grace a gentleman & a statesman?." With several cross-outs and emendations; [c] Autograph draft (unsigned), 3pp, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (but docketed on the verso: "Draft to Knollys for P of Wales 5 July / 70" ) of a letter to [Francis] Knollys (later Viscount Knollys), private secretary to the Prince of Wales, apologizing for having failed to attend a ball to which he had been invited the previous evening: ". . . the postponement of the ball to the 4th of July had placed us in a rather embarrassing position ? The 4th of July happens to be our national anniversary & I had ?invited all my compatriots known to me to be in London to a reception at our house in celebration of the day ?." With numerous cross-outs and corrections; [d] Autograph draft signed (scrawled initials), 3pp, 8vo, n.p., 23 July 1870. To C[harles]. F[rancis]. Adams, Motley's predecessor at the Court of Saint James, sending deep condolences on the death of his daughter. With corrections; [e] Final page (only) of a draft of a letter (signed "JL Motley") to the Duke of Bedford, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., sending condolences: " .she has gone as full of years as of honour & love -- having seen her children achieve splendid success & highest position -- as proud of them as they must ever be of her & her memory -- I write to you naturally as the head of her family."; and [f] a little over a page of a portion of a draft of a letter of condolence to an unidentified recipient; containing corrections. John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877); American historian and diplomat. Much of Motley's life was spent abroad researching his historical writings, and in various diplomatic posts. In England his friends included Bright, Dickens and Thomas Hughes. His best-known book, The Rise of the Dutch Republic, was finished in 1854, and Motley "set out with the manuscript for London to find a publisher. Murray, to whom he had letters of introduction, kept the manuscript for some weeks but finally declined it on account of its considerable length and unfamiliar subject. After some further negotiations Chapman agreed to publish it simultaneously with Harper & Brothers in America at the author's expense." When the book finally appeared early in 1856, instead of sales of less than a hundred which Motley had feared, some 17,000 copies were sold in little more than a year in England alone, and a second edition was required. In later years (1869-70) President Grant made Motley minister to Great Britain, but this appointment ended unsatisfactorily. Motley died in the UK at the age of 63 and was interred in London's Kensal Green Cemetery.

POEMS

F.S. Ellis, London 1870 - Dark blue-green cloth, elaborately decorated in gilt, decorated endsheets, edges untrimmed.Binding lightly rubbed, clean 4.5cm tear to gutter of half-title at top, old bookseller's description tipped to first leaf of terminal ads, otherwise a very good, bright copy. Half morocco slipcase. First edition of Rossetti's first published collection of original poems, preceded by two private printings in 1869 and 1870. Early binding state, before the spine block was recut, with an unsigned signature of 8 blank leaves at the back, after two leaves of publisher's adverts. The floral endsheets are printed on cream paper. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "To Theodore Martin Esq with DG Rossetti's friendly regards April 1870." Theodore Martin (1816- 1909), English poet, biographer, translator of Dante, and the husband of the actress, Helen Faucit, was among those in the list Rossetti sent to his publisher to receive presentation copies of this book. Stetz and Lasner, in ENGLAND IN THE 1880s, note: "This book, by the circumstances of its publication, by its contents, and by its design, secured Rossetti's reputation. When his wife, Elizabeth Sidal Rossetti, died in February 1862, Rossetti placed the original manuscripts of his poems in her coffin. In 1869 these were exhumed secretly from her grave and published in this volume in 1870 with other, more recent work. The book opens with 'The Blessed Damozel,' Rossetti's most famous poem, which had first appeared in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine, THE GERM, in 1850; among the other contents are the sonnet sequence called 'The House of Life' and a group of poems about paintings that show Rossetti's abiding interest in unifying the sister arts. . . . POEMS (1870) was perhaps most remarkable for being one of the first books to be designed throughout by an author. Over a period of nine months, Rossetti supervised the printing of the proofs while painstakingly designing the covers and endsheets. The result had a great influence upon writers and designers of the 1880s. Oscar Wilde's POEMS (1881) and several of Walter Pater's books clearly were modeled upon Rossetti's unique volume."         Albumen photograph of the harbour of Mukalla

[c. 1870s]. - Original albumen photograph, measuring 210 by 200mm, mounted on cream-coloured card. There is another photograph mounted on the verso of the card, showing the Memorial Well at the Nana Roa park in Kanpur city. Ms. titles, neatly written out below each image. Some minor fading, a few dust-marks, very good otherwise. A photograph showing the harbour of the Yemeni seaport. Freya Stark provides a short history of Mukallah in The Southern Gates of Arabia: ?The first contemporary mention of it is by Ibn Mujawir in the fourteenth century, and it remains in almost unbroken obscurity until 1829, when the British came after abandoning Aden, and until 1834 when Haines, looking for a naval base, examined Makalla and Sokotra? (p.22). Her photograph of the harbour, taken in early 1935, captures an expanse and density of buildings far greater than that shown in the present image, therefore pointing to its earliness.

2800 € [Attributes: First Edition]

"[5 John Paine (1833-1908) è nato in Inghilterra.

A rare, and quite possibly the first volume ever assembled on a train. As Eberstadt states (1940) "his extraordinary newspaper was written, put into type and published on board one of the first trains to make the trip across the continent and back. The press room was in the baggage car, and the compositor's room in the smoker. Aside from recording the incidents of this early journey by steam, the paper describes the entire route, with historical notes on the regions traversed and articles descriptive of the cities and country. A remarkable and extremely interesting memorial of the overland railroad and its first press." Howes S929. Original violet cloth imprinted in gold "Boston Board of Trade, 24 ff.
