        Glossaire Nautique.

Paris: Firmin Didot Frères, , 1848. Repertoire Polyglotte de Terms de Marine Anciens et Modernes. 2 volumes quarto (274 × 208 mm). Contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards. Illustrations in the text. Slightly rubbed, spines mildly scuffed and with some splitting, skilfully repaired, somewhat browned, as usual, but overall a very good set. First edition. Jal was a member of the French naval historical section, becoming official historiographer and eventually head of the archives. This universal marine dictionary was a labour of love, absorbing much of Jal's time for over 6 years, winning him the prestigious Prix Gobert of the Académie Française. "This work contains in one alphabetical sequence words from Latin, Greek, Modern Greek, French, Old French, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Dutch, Breton, Genoese, Basque, Catalan, Maltese, and other dialects and tongues; comparatively little in English, German and Russian; monumental work, with full definitions, not mere equivalents" (Craig). It is probably most comprehensive marine dictionary ever produced.

Principles of Political Economy with some of their Applications to Social Philosophy.

London John W.Parker 1848 - First edition, 2 vol., 8vo, 7pp. advertisements, bookplate on front pastedowns, publisher's blind-ruled ribbed cloth, paper spine labels (browned & chipped), some minor superficial splitting to joints, slight wear to spine ends and fore-corner tips, but overall a very good, unsophisticated set. As noted by Carter and Muir in Printing and the Mind of Man, this work was Mill's "major philosophical work.and laid the foundations of the 'philosophic radicalism' which became the gospel of liberal politicians in the mid-nineteenth century". In this work Mill followed and expounded upon many of the free market concepts developed by Adam Smith, attaching a more utilitarian focus and factoring in environmentalism and political influences on economic theory. The work can be seen as a continuation of his famous 1843 book A System of Logic: "However, the Principles is almost equally well remembered, becoming the leading economic textbook in the English-speaking world for the rest of the century. It was intended to modify the abstract and sometimes cold-hearted classical political economy [i.e. such as Ricardi and Adam Smith]. Although his introduction of an historical method did not advance the subject greatly, his perception of the limits to the applicability of abstract-deductive analysis was important" (Blaug, Who's Who in Economics).

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Overall a splendid example of this exceptionally rare color-plate book. The eight leaves of text are all written in verse: I. The Preparation.; II. The Speech.; III. The Presidency.; IV. The Procession.; V. The Meeting.; VI. The Conflict.; VII. The Flight.; VIII. The Home. The plates are captioned: [Frontispiece] "Cornelius Cuffey Esqr. 'A pillar of the State, engraven on his front Deliberation, sate and anxious care'"; I. "Mr. C.-scratcheth for ideas"; II. "Mr. C.-on his legs in the John St. Parliament"; III. "Mr. C.-President of the Republic. (in his own imagination)"; IV. "Mr. C.-proceeds to Kennington Common"; V. "Mr. C.-espieth a Policeman"; VI. "Personal encounter between Mr. C & the Policeman"; VII. "Mr. C's retreat-double quick time!-"; and VIII. "Mr. & Mrs. C.-At Home-." This 'Political Parody' is based on the life of William Cuffay, one of the leaders of the British working-class movement for political reform (1838-1857), commonly known as 'the People's Charter' or 'Chartism' movement. His grandfather was an African slave and his father was a West Indian slave from St. Kitts. His 'fictitious death' was lampooned in Punch in November 1848. Very scarce, with only two complete copies located in institutions and libraries worldwide: Harvard University (MA); Library of Philadelphia (PA). There is one other (imperfect with only eight plates) copy at the Mediatheque de Montpellier (France). William Cuffay (1788-1870) was one of the leaders of Chartism, which was the largest political movement ever seen in Britain. His grandfather was an African slave and his father was a West Indian slave, from St Kitts, who managed to gain his freedom and settle in Chatham, Kent. Cuffay trained as a tailor and moved to London where, in 1834, he was involved in the tailors strike for shorter hours. In 1839 he joined the Chartist movement and soon became well known for his oratory and sense of humour. At the final mass demonstration for the Charter on Kennington Common on 10 April 1848, he protested strongly at the decision to call off the march to the House of Commons to present the petition. He called the national leadership a set of cowardly humbugs. In August 1848 Cuffay became involved in a secret revolutionary committee which was planning an uprising in London. He was arrested, tried and convicted, on the evidence of two police spies, of levying war against the Queen. He was sentenced to transportation for life in Tasmania. In Hobart he carried on working as a tailor and remained actively involved in Tasmanian politics for twenty years. His wife was able to join him in 1853 and he was granted a free pardon in 1856. In 1870 he died a pauper in the workhouse. William Cuffay s reputation during the Chartist years was immense, yet he was subsequently forgotten for over 130 years. This book aims to set him in his historical context and restore him to his rightful place as one of the key figures in British history. Not in Abbey; Bobins; Martin Hardie; or Tooley.

INSHOKU YOJO KAGAMI: A MODEL OF MEN'S HEALTH CARE & RULES OF SEXUAL LIFE: An Ana

      - [Japan ca. 1848, n.p.] A single large color woodblock print, printed by hand on hand-made paper with vegetal colors, 38 x 51.5 cm., minor scuffing, some tiny old mended pin holes, old folds, excellent condition for such a RARE grand size print. . . *** **** *** . . . A SPECTACULAR . . . GRAND & DELUXE BROADSIDES . . . A RARE EXAMPLE OF HOW MALE ORGANS FUNCTION . . . A COLOR WOODBLOCK ANATOMICAL PRINT . . *** Offered here is a single large color print of male organ functions. . This superb and most rare example, shows a Japanese man drinking a cup of hot Sake [wine], with a tray of celebratory food before him on a tray. . The tray has a red snapper fish with ginger. The man is seated, and as he drinks, all internal organs are identified from the top: lungs, heart, liver, pancreas, stomach and the large and small intestines. . There is a profusion of text surrounding the illustration, with red lines to indicate what organ's function is being described. . In the heart, GREED is the subject of the illustration; it shows people bringing gold to the owner, while he pours over his account book. . The lungs are shown as a team of men with giant fans making breathing possible. . Other workers in the stomach show a team of labors with bamboo poles on their shoulder with a wooden bucket suspended at each end with food being moved about, as others shovel and hoe food around. . Another worker climbs up a ladder to the heart to dump food there ! The process of cleansing [creation & movement of urine] is showed a group of men pouring buckets of liquid in a press to filter and extract. As the food goes through the digestion process the last stop are the gates, controlled by two "gate keepers" who allow the flow and refuse to depart. . This was a superb example created for the common man to understand the complex process with a visual aid, and in simple Japanese. . *** MALE VARIANTS: There are two variants to this male print: 1. The man wears a black & white plaid Kimono over one shoulder with a bottle of Sake near his left hand. The background is gray, with the artist's signature & censor's seal at the lower right margin. . 2. Similar to the above, except the man does not wear a Kimono, only a loin cloth. The bottle of Sake is at his right hand side, with a white background three-quarters of the way down the last quarter is a green color. The man's left hand fingers are different from the example above. There is no artist's signature nor censor's seal. The surrounding text is also in a different format and not matching the one above. . Please see Nakahara examples found on pp.144 & 145, #'s 114 & 115. Both variants are considered quite RARE and seldom found. The male example is part of a pair of matching prints the other shows the female counterpart. See Nakahara page 143, #113, with title; BOJI YOJO KAGAMI. . Both are attributed to the artist his studio name was Yoshitsuna Ittosai, who's actual name was Utagawa Yoshitsuna, a famous pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. . *** [NOTE: The below is strictly "informational," we offer the single male print.] . THE COMPLETE SET: The complete set of two companion prints showing the male and female examples. The matching pair are seldom found and are very RARE. . *** . FEMALE PRINT: The female companion to the male print was with title: BOJO YOJO KAGAMI, and it was never signed nor censor sealed. See Nakahara p.143, illustration #113. . *** LACK OF ARTIST'S NAME AND CENSOR SEAL: One can only assume that the variant of the male example and also the female example was unsigned because the artist knew that such public exposure of women's private and internal parts were thought to be "licentious" and were prohibited by the Bakufu. Therefore the variant of the male example and the female examples all are without the artist's name and censor's seal. Clearly it was abundantly clear the female example would not pass the Shogun's censor's approval, it and the male variants were issued as contraband, illegally against th

Die Befestigung von Wien gegen anrükende Feind. [The Fortification of Vienna Against Opposing Enemies.]

Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig [1848], [Wien] - Proposal issued shortly before the Vienna Uprising of October, 1848, during which violence broke out between the laboring class of the city and the Hapsburg army as the latter was trying to leave in order to quell the Hungarian Revolution. Löve, most likely a university student at the time, proposes that Vienna would best be defended if the walls surrounding the inner city were to be dismantled (they would be irreparable if damaged by enemy bombardment) and the moat filled in for building development. Unlocated in OCLC or KVK, though noted in James E. Walsh, 1848 Austrian Revolutionary Broadsides and Pamphlets (1976), p. 143, dating the broadside to June 31, 1848. Löve issued another five or six titles listed in Walsh, one signed in type "Redacteur [I] der Studentenzeitung," (editor of the student newspaper); another "Redakteur des Stürmers" (editor of "The Strikers"). Broadside (50.75x42cm.) printed blackletter; previous folds, two corners neatly clipped not approaching text, else Very Good to Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

First edition, with the earliest (2 line) state of the errata and the hook on the left hand on the title-page vignette, "capitan" for "captain" on page 324 and with the missing "if" on page 426. Illustrated with 38 engraved plates, an engraved frontispiece and an engraved title vignette by H.K. Browne. 8vo, in a handsome period binding of of three quarter dark brown calf over marbled boards, back and corner-pieces gilt ruled. The spine with gilt ruled raised bands and with a black morocco label lettered and ruled in gilt, additional gilt lettering in a lower compartment, edges marbled, wove endpapers. The binding of the spine was expertly accomplished at a later date, and incorporates the original lettering label gilt, the end-leaves were added at the same time. xiv, 624 pp. A very handsome copy in a pleasing binding, sturdy and attractive with just a bit of expected maturing to the paper, much less then is typical. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY IMPORTANT WORK BY DICKENS. This is quite a desirable copy of the Dickens novel that introduced the world to the memorable Mr. Dombey and his transactions, business and personal, and that creates a "clear picture of society in [Dickens'] time." Dickens wrote it while in residence in a number of different areas, beginning the work in Lausanne, Switzerland, continuing in Paris, and finishing in Brighton, Broadstairs, and London, making the text "a true cosmopolite in the manner of its writing." The publication of this book marked a turning point for Dickens; his proceeds were a fine increase over MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT, and with these earnings "his financial worriment ceased, prosperity began, and a period of money-saving was at hand." This is the first publication of the text in its entirety after its serialization from October 1846 to April 1848. Copies this early are becoming scarce. An excellent piece of classic Dickensiana.

EARLY RECOLLECTIONS OF JAMAICA, WITH THE PARTICULARS OF AN EVENTFUL PASSAGE HOME VIA NEW YORK AND HALIFAX, AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE AMERICAN WAR IN 1812; TO WHICH ARE ADDED, TRIFLES FROM ST. HELENA RELATING TO NAPOLEON AND HIS SUITE

London, 1848. [6],vi,200pp. plus [8]pp. autograph letter bound in. 12mo. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards, spine ornately gilt, expertly recased. Contemporary ownership inscription and later ownership stamps on titlepage. Internally clean. Very good. The Reverend B.J. Vernon served as a Chaplain to the Honourable East India Company at Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, before which he had lived in Jamaica and travelled through the United States. This memoir is full of personal recollections of encounters with the natural history of Jamaica, as well as much on the enslaved Africans on the island, fugitive slaves, and rebellions. The "Trifles from St. Helena" section contains many anecdotes of encounters with the exiled Napoleon, and an intimate first hand account of his burial. The work also contains a section on Cuba, and an account of his experiences in New York and Boston and on his voyage home to England. Bound into the front matter is an eight-page autograph letter, signed, from the author to his second daughter Elizabeth Dorrill Hodson, born on Saint Helena in 1820. This letter corrects errors in the text and provides the true identities of various characters, a satisfying indiscretion between father and daughter. This copy also bears her ownership inscription on the titlepage, as well as the ownership stamps of her son, Hubert Courtney Hodson. CUNDALL 304.

        Principles of Political Economy.

Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1848. First American edition of John Stuart Mill's classic treatise. Octavo, 2 volumes. Bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, morocco spine labels, gilt rules to the front and rear panels, raised bands. In excellent condition. Principles of Political Economy is one of the most important economics or political economy books published. Political Economy is the term nineteenth-century writers used to refer to the study of what economists call macroeconomics, though its practitioners, such as Adam Smith, Mill, David Ricardo, and Karl Marx, were more philosophical and less empirical in their methods than modern economists. Mill examines the fundamental economic processes on which society is based: production, the distribution of goods, exchange, the effect of social progress on production and distribution, and the role of government in economic affairs. "To many generations of students, Mill's Principles was the undisputed bible of economic doctrine" (Roll, History of Economic Thought).

Die Befestigung von Wien gegen anrükende Feind [The Fortification of Vienna Against Opposing Enemies ]

[Wien]: Gredruckt bei Joseph Ludwig, [1848]. First Edition. Proposal issued shortly before the Vienna Uprising of October, 1848, during which violence broke out between the laboring class of the city and the Hapsburg army as the latter was trying to leave in order to quell the Hungarian Revolution.

With a Copper Engraved Map on Mercator's Projection]

Typ. Of Karl Kray, St. Petersburg 1848 - Two vols. bound together. [2], 182; [2], [2], 120, 43, [2] pp., 1 map. 23,5x15 cm. Contemporary marbled papered boards neatly rebacked in style with leather spine (with gilt lettered title); original endpapers. Green paper label of the private library of Kapitan Nevostruyev attached to the front pastedown endpaper. Paper very mildly age toned, but overall a very good sound copy of this rare book. First edition. With a large folding copper engraved map bound at rear. Very rare Russian imprint with only eight copies found in Worldcat. ''Lieutenant Zagoskin's expedition was to make an inland exploration of the northern territory of Alaska and to survey the Kvikhpak (Yukon) and Kuskokvim rivers and the region encompassed by them. Zagoskin kept a diary which forms the basis of his work. He described in detail the Russian trading posts visited and the topography of the surroundings of Norton Sound. He also gave a good account of the life and customs of the Eskimo and the Indian inhabitants and much other important first-hand information secured during the expedition's 18 ½ months of travel, during which about 5,000 versts (some 3,000 miles) were covered on foot and in leather baidars - a truly remarkable achievement'' (Lada-Mocarski 130). ''The map must be one of the first, if not the first, printed map of the interior of Alaska along the lower course of the Yukon and between the Yukon and what is now Nome. Zagoskin's explorations were confined chiefly to the middle course of the Kuslokwim and the lower course and northern tributaries of the Yukon'' (Streeter 3521). Lavrenty Zagoskin (1808-1890) had been in the service of the Russian-American Company since 1838. In 1824-44 he headed the exploratory expedition to the surroundings of the Norton and Kotzebue Sounds, during which he discovered the mountain range separating the Yukon River from the eastern shore of the Norton Sound, surveyed the basins of the local rivers, found previously unknown Aleut settlement (modern Holy Cross in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska), compiled the first map of the area, and collected numerous zoological, botanical, mineralogical and ethnographical items. For his achievements he was elected a member of the Russian Geographical Society which published excerpts from his travel diary in its ''Proceedings'' (1846 and 1847). This the first full edition of Zagoskin's travel account was published in two volumes in 1847-1848 and was accompanied with a large folding map outlining the route of his expedition. This edition received the Demidov Award of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1849). Our copy includes the paper exlibris label from the private library of Kapiton Nevostruyev (1816-1872), Russian church historian, archaeologist and writer, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1861). He authored the histories of over twenty Russian monasteries, as well as a fundamental description of Slavic manuscripts from the Library of the Holy Synod in Moscow (the main reference library of Russian Orthodox Church). Arctic Bibliography 19781; Bancroft pp. 553-54; Wickersham 5904. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
