Die poetische Ukraine. Eine Sammlung kleinrussischer Volkslieder. Ins Deutsche übertragen von Friedrich Bodenstedt [Poetic Ukraine. A collection of folk songs from Little Russia. Translated into German by Friedrich Bodenstedt]

      J. G. Cotta'scher Verlag, Stuttgart und Tübingen 1845 - Small octavo (17.3 × 10.8 cm). Contemporary marbled boards; gilt title to spine; XII, 132 pp. Text block lightly resized to binding; light foxing throughout; tiny embossed private owner stamp; still about very good. First attempt to introduce a German readership to the riches of Ukrainian folklore and lyric poetry, and to its culture in a broader sense, with special attention given to the songs and history of the Cossacks. The work is also the first publication by Bodenstedt (1819-1892), a relatively little-known German writer, scholar, and translator of Russian literature, who introduced German readers to the works of Derzhavin, Batiushkov, Zhukovsky, Pushkin, Kol'tsov, Fet, and others. After studying philosophy and philology, he worked as a teacher in Moscow, where he became acquainted with the poet Vasily Krasov (1810-1854), who lectured him on the difference between Russian and Ukrainian folklore, and inspired him to undertake the present work without having spent time in Ukraine himself. Bodenstedt's translations are largely based on Mikhail Maksimovich's 'Ukrainskie narodnye pesni' (Moscow, 1834) and an earlier compilation of Ukrainian songs by Nikolai Tsertelev. After moving to Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1843, Bodenstedt was aided by Aleksandr Afanas'ev-Chuzhbinskii and Polish writer Tadeusz Lada-Zablocki. He was finally encouraged to publish the work by the German orientalist scholar and diplomat Georg Rosen (1821-1891). After Cotta in Stuttgart agreed to publish the work, Bodenstedt added a lengty introduction in the Romantic style: "Was ich hier gebe, soll nichts sein als eine kurze Berichtigung der irrigen Ansichten, welche allgemein in Deutschland uber den Ursprung und die Entwicklung des weitverzweigten Kosakensystems herrschen; zugleich mogen diese Blatter als Fuhrer dienen durch den duftigen Liedergarten, der sich in bunten, wilden, aber anmutigen Verschlingungen vor den Augen des Lesers ausbreitet." He presents thirty-three lyric songs and twelve Dumy, or sung epic poems, selected for their aesthetic beauty and significance for Ukrainian history. His preface states that "in no other country has the tree of folk poetry produced such magnificent fruits as among the Ukrainians." The preface also mentions that, should the work be well received, Bodenstedt planned to issue similar editions for Georgian, Armenia, Tartar and Persian folk songs. In Tbilisi he had met the poet Mirza Shafi, who introduced him to these languages and their respective literary traditions. With epigrams by Goethe and George Ellis. The book appeared in 750 copies, of which only 227 copies sold. Bodenstedt himself complained, in 1860, that copies were impossible to find, and it is likely that the publisher remaindered a large portion of the print run. See also: Richard J. Brunner and Oleksandr Bilous, "'Die Poetische Ukraine' von Friedrich Bodenstedt: Entstehungsgeschichte und eine Übersetzungsanalyse," in Naukovi zapysky, no. 126. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio. Hunting scenes and amusements of the Rocky Mountains and prairies of America. From drawings and notes of the author, made during eight years' travel amongst forty-eight of the wildest and most remote tribes of savages in North America

James Ackerman, 304 Broadway, cor.[ner] Duane St, New York 1845 - (21 3/4 x 15 3/8 inches). Letterpress title (verso blank), 1p. "To the American Public" (verso blank), pp.[5-]16 explanatory text. 25 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Catlin. Expertly bound to style in half red morocco and publisher's cloth boards with morocco label. Housed in a red morocco backed box Provenance: Edward Eberstadt (catalogue 127:113, pencil note on front endpaper); Frank T. Siebert (his sale, Sotheby's New York, 28 October 1999, lot 845) The very rare first American edition of Catlin's masterpiece: among the most rare and desirable of all American color plate books or western Americanum. This is only the eleventh known copy of the coloured issue of the American edition of the North American Indian Portfolio, according to William Reese's census of over 160 sets, and corresponds to Reese issue 6. Bennett states: "This book is of the most excessive rarity and worth several times the value of the more common British printing." A highly important record of a "truly lofty and noble race.A numerous nation of human beings.three-fourths of whose country has fallen into the possession of civilized man.twelve million of whose bodies have fattened the soil in the mean time; who have fallen victims to whiskey, the small-pox, and the bayonet" (Catlin). Catlin first published his North American Indian Portfolio. . in two issues in London in late November 1844. The first issue was hand-colored, the second had tinted plates. Both the London editions are now very rare, but they are known in roughly tenfold the number of this incredibly rare American edition, evidently published without Catlin's knowledge or consent in New York in 1845. It is a milestone in lithography in the United States. It was issued in a hand-colored edition on paper, in a hand-colored edition on card, and in a tinted edition on paper. Of the 160 copies of Catlin's work located in a census by William Reese, only sixteen were the American edition. Of the sixteen other located copies, half have the plates colored and printed on paper, as in the present copy. Only three American editions have appeared at auction since the late 1970s, while the London edition appears with some regularity. On a leaf after the titlepage, the publisher, Ackerman, proudly states that he is happy to prove that American work can be the equal of anything produced in Europe; his preface is given in full below. Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio contains the results of his years of painting, living with and travelling amongst the Great Plains Indians. Catlin summarized the American Indians as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, - yet honourable, contemplative and religious being." In a famous passage from the preface to the London edition of his North American Indian Portfolio. ., Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian." He saw no future for either their way of life or their very existence, and with these thoughts always at the back of his mind he worked, against time, setting himself a truly punishing schedule, to record what he saw. From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the tribes and then finished his pictures in oils during the winter. The record he left is unique, both in its breadth and also in the sympathetic understanding that his images constantly demonstrate. A selection of the greatest of images from this record were published in Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio in an effort to reach as wide an audience as possible. In addition to publishing the present work, Catlin also spent from 1837 to 1852 touring the United States, England, France and Holland with his collection of pain [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In 1816 he moved to 15 Paternoster Row. Many books were subsequently printed by Bagster. A fine quarto issued in 1841 is specially deserving of mention. It is ‘The English Hexapla,’ giving the six most important versions in our tongue of the New Testament, being those of Wyclif (1380), Tyndale (1534), Cranmer (1539), the Genevan (1557), the Anglo-Rhemish (1582), and the authorised (1611), together with the Greek text after Scholz, and a valuable historical account of the English translations. Illustrated with an impressive folding hand-coloured lithographic frontispiece of Niagara Falls and the adjoining countryside showing the rock strata in colours in Vol. I; large folding coloured geological map of the U.S. and Canada in Vol. II and five additional plates, three of which are folding and one coloured, and additional illustrations within the text. 8vo, in the publisher's original green cloth impressed with a botanical pattern in blind on all covers, the spines blind decorated and lettered in gilt. xiii, (1), 316; viii, 272 pp. An extremely fresh and bright set, a fine set, the cloth with no wear or fading, the text appearing generally as pristine and extremely clean, a little mellowing to the endpapers and title-page only. UNUSUALLY FINE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY WORK ON AMERICAN GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY. Lyell was an eminent British geologist whose work was especially important at this time because it had just been discovered that "a correct appreciation of the principles of geology became essential to the zoologist who would understand the relations between existing genera and species. It was felt that the physical changes in past times accounted in some way for the changes among organisms. The work of Lyell, and others led to the establishment of the science of paleontology and supported the biological studies by Darwin and A. Russel Wallace. This work is the product of scientific investigations throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Ohio, and Nova Scotia. Along with his important geological, work these volumes contain his impartial observations on the American education system, economy, and even slavery and race relations.

Map of the Railways of England & Wales shewing the principal and minor stations.

Printed by Welch & Margetson, [c1845]., London, - Rare railway map of England and Wales printed on silk Lithographed map printed on silk, blue border, embroidered initials at upper left. A souvenir map of England and Wales, showing the railway lines rapidly spreading across the country. Although the map is undated, the ownership embroidery ("I.W.C. 45") and the progress of the lines allows a fairly accurate estimate of the date of production. The railway line from London to Exeter is completed (1844), but not the extension to Plymouth (1846); similarly, the line to Colchester is finished (1843) but not the extension to Ipswich (1846). Welch, Margetson & Co was a successful clothing manufacturer and wholesaler from 1842 to 1963. Maps printed on silk were popular contemporary accessories, with a similar silk railway map printed by William Reed. Welch and Margetson also produced a silk map of London, an example of which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. See V&A T.84-1972 for another example of the firm's work.
