Album of Peruvian costumes [Album de escenas del Peru y Lima]

Splendid collection of Peruvian watercolors, all visually striking, most likely by the hand of Peru´s native artist Pancho Fierro; this album might be a compilation done by an Englishman of Pancho Fierro´s drawings, considering the English captions. Each watercolor is accompanied by a short title in contemporary writing which explains scene portrayed: "Fresquero, or vendor of iced Drinks", "Adjusting the Saya", "A baker", "Penitente, collecting almas", "Llama loden with cheeses from the interior of Peru conducted by an Indian woman", "Waterman unloading", "A Peruvian horse soldier", "General Gran Mariscal Don Agustin Gamarra President of Peru - a very good likeness", "Dulcero or vendor of sweets", "Dance of the Country", "Lady going to or coming from Amancaso[?] a place much visited in July...", "Lady bathing with guide in Chorillos, a small port near Lima", "Conducting grass to the city for sale", "Man selling ices", "Quesera - Indian woman selling cheese", "Saya y manto", "Saya desplazada or full saya", "Beggar woman", "Waterman on his way to the fountain to fill his casks", "Belero, or vendor of Candles", "Chorillano, native of Chorillas collecting almas for some religious ceremony", amongst others. One of the drawings represents the General Gran Mariscal Agustín Gamarra Mesia (1785 - 1841), a Peruvian politician and military, Constitutional President from 1829-1833 and 1840-1841; the drawing mentions him as the President, thus the album was surely made during one of both periods as President. Although no signature is found and no attribution is made on the album, the color and the quality of the watercolors is remarkable and reflects the characteristic style of Fierro (1809 - 1879) a Peruvian self-taught artist, son of a criollo and a black slave. On Fierro, often dubbed as one of the most original Peruvian painters of the 19th century, much has been written, and is to-date a subject of research; his drawings, representing the life and costumes of Lima´s inhabitants -of which he probably made about 1200- are highly coveted and are a brilliant artistic record. These albums are vivid testimonies of the increasing interest from Europeans in Peruvian costumes at the turn of the 19th century. The recently created nation had long been the stronghold of Spanish rule in South America and was then forging it's own identity Marcus Burke y Natalia Majluf, Tipos del Perú.          A Narrative of the Battle of St. Vincent. With Anecdotes of Nelson, before and after that Battle.

London: Saunders and Otley, 1840 - Large octavo. Original vertical-ribbed blue-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, elaborate panel-stamp to covers in blind enclosing gilt title to front, yellow surface-paper endpapers, gilt edges. Spine sunned, a little frayed at extremities, bumping to top edges of boards and to lightly worn corners, resultant mild cockling, small abrasion to front board, pale marking to rear board, damp-stain to foot of gutter from front pastedown to slightly spotted frontispiece, which has an additional pale tide mark at the bottom edge, the image unaffected, pale spotting to title page, marginal finger-marking to page 3. A very good copy in the fresh original cloth. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 8 plates of battle-plans, vignettes to the text. Second and best edition of "one of the most important eye-witness accounts of the battle" (NMM), the first edition to include the "anecdotes"; originally published in 1797, anonymously, as A Narrative of the Proceedings of the British Fleet [ ]. Drinkwater, probably best remembered for his account of the Siege of Gibraltar, was a friend of Nelson's and much accentuated his role in the battle, providing a number of the most enduring tales of this engagement. He had witnessed the battle from the Lively and received the Nelsonian "spin" directly from the source: "The day after the battle [Nelson] went on board Lively, which he knew was ordered back to England with dispatches [and] briefed Colonel Drinkwater" (Knight, The Pursuit of Victory p. 228). Nelson had not been mentioned in the published despatches but Drinkwater's account ensured that justice was done. Later in life, following the death of his brother-in-law, Drinkwater assumed his wife's name Bethune, hence his appellation on the title page of this volume. Uncommon. NMM V 1765.

Souvenirs de la Suisse 100 Vues les plus Remarquables

Briquet et Dubois, Genève 1840 - Rare to find a complete album and in its period binding. Most of these original albums were split up and framed as individual souvenirs for the tourist industry at that time.Tourist travel in Switzerland would pass through places such as Mont Blanc, Chamonix, Mer de Glace and Grand Saint-Bernard and those views were almost always included in these tourist albums. This Album, of 100 views, is a compilation of several collections. 8vo oblong, 17x13 cm. Pages, thin card, generally clean and bright, especially for age, some tanning to edges, one or two small nicks. The plain backs are rather foxed; some foxing shows through onto the pictures, some just to the edges, and a few not at all.The majority of tissue guards are in situ but one or two are torn, creased, or missing. Page edges slightly grubby. Inside covers show the glue from the leather pastedown and this has stained the edges of the endpapers. Front inside cover shows printed advertising for the publisher, and FFep shows album title and publisher. Covers, burgundy leather with gilt title, generally clean and bright, some scratching, some scuffing. Corners, and edges, rubbed, worn. Spine splits to ends, head rubbed/worn, folds rubbed. No publishing date to book but, I believe,c:1835-45. Overall, although rather foxed still a good clean, very rare, complete, album. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fine condition.John Forsyth (1780-1841) served Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren as Secretary of State from 1834-1841. Henry L. Ellsworth (1791-1858), son of Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth, was the first Commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office from 1835-1845“To All to Whom These Letters Patent Shall Come: Whereas Matthias W. Baldwin Philadelphia, Penn has alleged that he has invented a new and useful Improvement in the mode of connecting the piston rod with the pistons of steam Cylinders, which he states has not been known or used before his application has made oath that he is a citizen of the United States that he does verily believe that he is the original and first inventor or discoverer of said improvement and that the same hath not to the best of his knowledge and belief been previously known or used, has paid into the treasury of the United States the sum of thirty dollars and presented a petition to the Commissioner of Patents signifying a desire of obtaining an exclusive property in the said improvement and praying that a patent may be granted for that purpose These are Therefore to grant according to law to the said Matthias W. Baldwin his heirs administrators or assigns for the term of fourteen years from the seventeenth day of December one thousand eight hundred and forty the full and exclusive right and liberty of making constructing using and rending to others to be used the said improvement a description whereof is given in the words of the said Matthias W. Baldwin in the schedule hereunto annexed and is made a part of these presents.”In the description, Baldwin writes, in part, “The object of my improvement is, by dispensing with the guides as commonly used, and with the pitman, or rod, usually employed, to connect the crank, or working beam, with the piston rod, and which in confined situations cannot be made of sufficient length to be advantageously employed, to combine the pitman and piston rod in one, by which the whole length of the piston rod is, in effect, added to the pitman. In carrying my improvement into effect, I connect the outer end of the piston rod, by means of a joint pin, directly to a crank, or to a vibrating beam, or lever, as the case may be; and the inner end thereof I likewise connect to the piston, by means of a joint pin, by which device the piston rod is allowed to vibrate laterally to that extent which may be necessary for the throw of the crank, or of the curve formed by the motion of the beam, or lever. In the upper, or outer, head of the cylinder I make a longitudinal slot, or opening, of sufficient length to admit of the lateral vibration of the piston rod, resulting from its mode of connexion, and. this slot, or opening, I cover with a jointed hub, or with a slide, and connect the same with a stuffing box, to embrace the piston, constructing these parts in such manner as to keep them steam, water, and air tight, whilst the necessary freedom of motion is allowed … What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by letters patent, is the attaching of the piston rod of a double acting steam, water, blowing, or other engine, directly to a lever beam, or crank, at one end, and to the piston at the other, causing the same piston rod to pass through a stuffing box connected with a jointed hub, or with a slide, so formed and arranged as to admit of the lateral vibration of the piston rod, substantially in the manner herein set forth.”Matthias William Baldwin (1795-1866) founded the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia and built Pennsylvania’s first locomotive, “Old Ironsides,” in 1831. A jeweler and silversmith by trade, he was a charter member and vice-president of the Franklin Institute (1855-1863) and a member of the American Philosophical Society (1858-1863). Two weeks after this patent, on December 31, 1840, Baldwin was granted a patent “for improvements in the manner of constructing Locomotive Steam Engines.”

Views in Kairo. [Illustrations of Cairo].

London: Tilt and Bogue, n.d. [1840]. FINE LITHOGRAPHIC ALBUM. Elephant Folio (55 x 37cm). A complete collection of 29 fine lithographs with a decorative lithographic title page and a lithographic dedication plate. Each plate with a recent tissue guard. In recent green half morocco with raised bands, gilt titles to spine and green cloth boards.Clean plates with some professional repair work to some edges and corners carried out at time of re-binding. A 1cm tear to top edge of the Bar en Nasr plate has formed since restoration. Repairs thus: top corner of title plate; top corner of dedication plate; top corner of Beyb el-Kasreyn plate; top edge of Fountain of el-Mudaffar plate; top corner of Boolak part 2 plate; top corner of Entrance to the Great Mosque plate. All the lithographic images themselves are clean, bright and unaffected by restoration. Very good overall. Together with the Orientalist Edward William Lane, to whom this volume is dedicated, Hay took part in an early archaeological / treasure-gathering expedition to Egypt between 1826 and 1838. Although the British Museum owns an extensive archive of Hay's drawings and diaries, this collection of lithographs, mainly from drawings by another of Hay's companions Owen Carter, is the only published example of their work. The plates mainly depict mosques, gates and street scenes from Islamic Cairo, rather than antiquities or ancient architecture.

Modern red three-quarter morocco, raised bands, spine panels with gilt fleuron, gilt titling. Grolier American 46; Howes D-49; Sabin 18448; Streeter Sale 2493; BAL 4434. Mild dampstaining throughout, always very light but causing a little wrinkling to the last half of the text, other trivial imperfections, but a very good copy, the text generally clean and fresh, and the binding unworn. This is Dana's ground-breaking novel of life at sea, a work that helped launch the nautical adventure genre. The privileged son of a prominent Boston family, Dana (1815-82) took a two-year break from his studies at Harvard to rest eyes weakened by measles, and signed on as a seaman on a voyage around Cape Horn to Spanish California. This gripping account of the years 1834-36 is based largely on his journal from that period, and documents everything from the details of everyday life at sea to the cruel floggings that led Dana to vow "to redress the grievances and sufferings" of the common sailor. ANB notes that it "was an immediate success in the United States and in England, and it permanently influenced works about the sea, making their authors both more realistic about and also more cognizant of the common sailor's plight." According to the Grolier American 100, "the book has added importance because, while the brig was assembling hides for the return trip to Boston, Dana journeyed up into the California cattle country, of which he gives us our only trustworthy account before the 1849 gold rush." Dana went on to a have a lucrative career in admiralty law, but never lost his love of the sea: when his doctors ordered him to take time off to rest, he took the opportunity to sail solo around the world for 433 days.          ALS to Thomas Mitton, from Devonshire Terrace, Sunday 18th October. ?It is mortal long and complicated.?

[1840] 1840 - 27 lines on first & second side of folded 8vo sheet. With addressed envelope. Not in Pilgrim Letters or either addenda. Primarily about the sales and remaining stock of Master Humphrey?s Clock. ?I am very sorry I had made an engagement last Monday evening, and could not very well break it . I have the clock account, and you shall see it. It is mortal long and complicated .? Dickens records the total receipts of c.£10,600 and the total expenditure ?including the cost of the stock? . of c.£10,300 leaving ?Balance in money now in hand in favor of the partners, £340.6.0.!!!!!!!!!? ? all the profit is spent in stock, and this half year I?m half master of God knows how many thousand reams of printed paper.? WITH: An envelope addressed to Mitton at Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane postmarked ?JA 9 1841?(?). Thomas Mitton, 1812-1878, was a close early friend of Dickens who worked together for a short time as clerks in Lincoln?s Inn. Dickens provided surety for Mitton to buy into a practice in 1838 and he remained Dickens?s solicitor for the next twenty years. Dickens had expected Master Humphrey (April 1840-December 1841) to make between £10,000 and £11,000 and entered into a partnership with Chapman and Hall. The high cost of the numerous woodcuts meant much smaller profits - some £1,068 for Dickens - on top of his stipend of £50 per part.
