Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi. Edited by "BOZ."With Illustrations By George Cruikshank...

London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, 1838. Two vols., 8vo., xix, 288; ix, [1], 263, 36(publishers advertisements) pp., 13 engraved plates including frontispieces in each volume. Contemporary half blue morocco and blue cloth, with five raised bands and titling in gilt to backstrip, top edge gilt; original brown cloth covers bound in to each volume. Corners and joints are rubbed, and covers are attached by a thread, occasional light finger prints, bottom and fore-edges slightly toned, otherwise a very good complete set. First edition, second issue, with rare bordered state of the final plate "The Last Song." The frontisportrait of Grimaldi in volume one is by W. Greatbatch after a painting by S. Raven. There has been a great deal of research involved in concluding how much Dickens actually contributed to this publication. The consensus is that Dickens did indeed thoroughly edit Grimaldi's memoirs after it had been condensed by Thomas Egerton Wilks and sold to Richard Bentley. Dickens contributed greatly and undisputedly to the final chapter, and his style is plain throughout many parts of the book. The added border to the final plate "The Last Song," was an attempt at improving upon it with caricatures representative of Grimaldi's various characters, the "mutilation has been ascribed to Alfred Crowquill and George Augustus Sala" (Eckel 154). This plate was quickly restored to it's previous condition and is thus rare in this state. Thomson 24.

Mondscheinphantasien. Herausgegeben von Einem, der sich nicht nennt. Erster Kranz (alles Erschienene). 1838. Gedruckt in der Mondscheindruckerey. (Manuscript für Brüder).

      - (Hamburg, 1838).

2 vols.; 27 plates

Paris: Bailliere, 1838. xviii, 678; [4], 864pp. 27 plates. 211 x 130 mm. 19th century half morocco gilt, spines a little faded. Fine copy. First edition. The first modern textbook of psychiatry. Esquirol, together with his teacher Pinel, is regarded as the founder of the French school of psychiatry. He was among the first to apply statistical methods to clinical studies of insanity, and his Maladies mentales, based on 20 years of observation and treatment of mental illness, remained a basic psychiatric text for over half a century. Esquirol was the first to distinguish between hallucinations and illusions, and between dementia and idiocy; he also provided the classic description of paresis, coined the term "monomania" and distinguished certain depressive states from other psychoses. The plates to his work constitutes the first important iconography of the insane. Garrison-Morton 4798. Norman 724.

         MEMOIRS OF JOSEPH GRIMALDI

London: Richard Bentley, 1838. FIRST EDITION, Second State (with frame around final plate, "The Last Song"). This is an extraordinarily attractive copy of the biography of Joseph Grimaldi (1779-1837), called by Britannica "the most celebrated of English clowns," and generally considered without equal as a clown of pantomime. There has been much debate about the exact nature of Dickens' role in the writing of this book. Forster said that Dickens wrote only the introductory chapter; others have said that he edited the manuscript, with the help of his father; and Bentley has stated in print that Dickens wrote a significant portion of the work. Eckel says, "It is plain that the last chapter is in Dickens' style and that other parts of the book are his. Grimaldi laid the foundation for his memoirs, but in a rough and diffuse manner. He gave the manuscript to Thomas Egerton Wilks, who, after some condensing, sold the manuscript to Bentley, who, in turn, passed it to Dickens for the purpose of embroidery." According to Kitton, copies with the frame around the final plate (as here) are more valuable than others because of their relative scarcity; the border was added without Dickens' consent, and when he expressed his displeasure, it was quickly removed. The especially pretty Riviere binding is typical of the firm's first-rate work and use of the best materials.. 204 x 125 mm. (8 x 4 7/8"). With half titles and with 36 pp. of ads at the end of Vol. II. Two volumes. FIRST EDITION, Second State (with frame around final plate, "The Last Song"). HANDSOME FOREST GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with French fillet borders, raised bands, spines gilt in delicately tooled compartments with scrolling centerpiece within a lozenge of small tools, volute cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins densely gilt with floral rolls and plain and decorative rules, purple endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Original purple cloth binding bound in. With 13 plates by George Cruikshank. Eckel, pp. 140-42; Kitton, pp. 177-83; Gimbel Collection B-64. Spines evenly sunned to tan (as usual with green morocco), faint offsetting from final plate, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, with only the most trivial imperfections internally, and in a sparkling binding.          Sepia wash brush painting, signed ("F. Chopin").

[Mallorca, 1838?]. - 244 x 178 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. A masterly southern European landscape by the great composer, showing the view of a lake or pond with a boat, a couple walking in the countryside, and the ruins of a castle on a hill in the background. - Chopin's inclinations toward pictorial art were already evident during his days as the Warsaw Lyceum: his chalk portrait of the Lyceum's director Bogumil Linde has survived (Bory, p. 49), as has a landscape signed in full (now in the Ciechomska collection in Warsaw, pictured in Bory, p. 52). Undoubtedly, Chopin's relationship to George Sand and his stay in Mallorca contributed to his once more picking up the brush. Indeed, the motif might very well be a Mallorcan view: George Sand's watercolour "Seaward View From the House in Valldemossa " (Bory, p. 130, bottom) shows obvious similarities. On the reverse of the present leaf is an uncompleted pencil portrait, unquestionably also the work of Chopin. - The provenance of this uncommonly evocative painting can be traced to the master himself: Chopin presented it to his student Karol Mikuli (1821-97), who always held it in the highest esteem and bequeathed it to his own student Raoul von Koczalski (1885-1948). From Koczalski's estate it passed to a student from his master class. From him it was acquired by the renowned German antiquarian music and music books dealer, Hans Schneider of Tutzing, who offered the painting at the 1976 Zurich Art Fair "Antic '76" and in his catalogue 200. Last in a private collection. - With two small closed tears in the lower white margin, otherwise fine. Schneider, Tutzing, cat. 200 (1976), no. 46. Internationale Kunst- und Antiquitäten-Messe Zürich (Antic '76), cat. p. 52 (pictured). Also illustrated in: E. Burger, Frédéric Chopin. Eine Lebenschronik in Bildern und Dokumenten (Munich 1990), p. 183, fig. 386. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

         Democracy in America

Adlard & Saunders 1838 and 1840, New York - First American edition of Toqueville's manum opus. Octavo, 2 volumes. Volume I is the Adlard & Saunders issue (priority over the more common Dearborn issue is undetermined), and Volume II is published by J. & H.G. Langley. Preface by John Canfield Spencer, who later served as Secretary of War. Light rubbing and minor wear, volume one rebacked. First editions are rare and desirable. "One of the most important texts in political literature" (PMM). "This is by far the best book ever written about America, and the most penetrating book ever written about democracy. It won instant acclaim, not only in the writer's native France, where Royer-Collard declared: "Nothing equal to it had appeared since Montesquieu,' but in England, where John Stuart Mill hailed it as 'among the most remarkable productions of our time.' Its central theme is that democracy has become inevitable; that it is, with certain qualifications, desirable; but that it has great potentialities for evil as well as good, depending upon how well it is understood and guided. In the view of de Tocqueville, the greatest danger that threatens democracy is its tendency toward the centralization and concentration of power. There is revived interest in Tocqueville today because of what seems like the uncanny clairvoyance of his prophecies. For example (this by a Frenchman in 1835): 'There are at the present time two great nations in the world, which started from different points, but seem to tend towards the same end. I allude to the Russians and the Americans. The principal instrument of [America] is liberty; of [Russia] servitude. Their starting point is different and their courses are not the same; yet each of them seems marked by the will of Heaven to sway the destinies of half the globe" (Hazlitt, 163). Pp.33-48 are missing but this is more than made up for by the extra illustration of the book with 28 original pages of sketches by Flaxman from his sketchbooks, many of which appear as plates in the book. Walter Crane's copy which ended up in the possession of Shane Leslie, first cousin of Winston Churchill, at Castle Leslie in Co. Monaghan, after it was acquired by his father Sir John Leslie a friend of the Pre-Raphaelites. This book was acquired directly from the Leslie family. ""In an age much given to the cultivation of classic art and virtue, Flaxman, even as a lad, with no models before him except the plaster casts of his father's shop, had shown in his drawings and models an instinct beyond that of any of his contemporaries for the true qualities of Greek design. He had the secret, almost lost to modern art, of combining ideal grace of form and rhythmical composition of lines with spontaneousness and truth of pose and gesture, and the unaffected look of life. Sketching constantly, as was his habit, with pen and pencil the leading lines and masses of every scene and every action of daily humanity that caught his attention within doors or without, and at the same time studying ardently, since his arrival in Italy, the works of Greek design in ancient vases and bas-reliefs, he had greatly strengthened his natural gifts both for linear design and the expression of life and action. The best of the outlines to the Greek poets and Dante and they are those which represent subjects of grace and gentleness, rather than subjects of violence or terroræare worthy of all the praise they have won. Their success was immediate and universal. Fuseli, whose foible was certainly not diffidence, at once declared himself outdone as a designer. Canova, the prince of Italian sculptors, was generous in recognising those qualities in Flaxman which he lacked himself, and praised his work without stint. Schlegel, the chief of German critics, extolled it a few years later more vehemently still. French taste, then running towards ancient ideals, was equally favourable, and from within a few years of the publication of these designs until our own time the name of Flaxman has been perhaps more known and honoured abroad than that of any other English artist."          Lord Brougham's Speech in the House of Lords, on Tuesday, the 20th of February, 1838, for the Immediate Emancipation of the Negro Apprentices.

London: James Ridgway and Sons,, 1838. Quarto (275 x 211 mm), pp. [VI], 50. Near contemporary blue half calf, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled paper boards, brown endpapers, edges sprinkled red. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Robert Peel, Drayton Manor to front pastedown and his signature to the title page. A few neat ink corrections made to the Latin excerpt on page 43. Extremities lightly rubbed, corners bruised, slight offset from oxidised bookplate, internally good with a little foxing, overall a bright, fresh copy. First edition, one of 20 quarto copies, from the library of Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, with his bookplate and signature. It is unknown whether these quarto copies were in addition to an octavo printing; the second edition, published later the same year, was printed in octavo. Considering their proximity and active participation in the same parliamentary debates on the subject, as well as the small print run, it is possible that this was a presentation copy given to Peel by the author. They corresponded throughout the 1840s and 1850s and many of their letters to each other are housed in the National Archives. This is Lord Brougham's eloquent indictment of the apprenticeship system in the British Colonies, delivered on 20 February 1838, which highlighted the abuse of the system, particularly as it was operating in Jamaica, and strove to regulate working hours and extend the protective jurisdiction of the colonies' special magistrates and governors. "On 28 August 1833, the Abolition of Slavery Bill, which had been passed by the British parliament, received the royal assent and became law … It provided that slavery, as a legal status, would cease to exist throughout the British colonial empire on 1 August 1834 and that slave children under the age of six at that time would be immediately freed. As for the other ex-slaves, for them a new institution would be created—apprenticeship. They were to be registered as apprenticed labourers for a period of four years in the case of domestic servants and six years in that of field hands … [and] slave-owners would be compensated for their losses by a grant of twenty million pounds" (Gross, p. 560). Led by Brougham, abolitionist pressure, however, accelerated the timetable and Brougham pushed for a more immediate end date, proposing to amend the Abolition Act by substituting 1 August 1838 for 1 August 1840. Although Peel presented seven petitions in favour of the abolition of the apprenticeship system in March 1838, during his speech on 28 May he argued in the House of Lords that it would be imprudent to terminate it abruptly, which he believed might make it impossible to properly compensate planters for their loss. The colonial assemblies chose to end apprenticeship themselves, and the system was effectively abolished later that year. OCLC locates just five copies of the title worldwide (BL, Senate House, 2 in Australia, 1 in the Netherlands), Copac adding one more at Sheffield.
