Meteorological Observations and Essays

Manchester: Printed by Harrison and Crosfield for Baldwin and Cradock, 1834. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (227 x 140 mm). xx, 244, [4] pp., including publisher's advertisements on final [4] pages. Original publisher's boards, printed paper label on spine (joints cracked and weakened, corners bumped). Pages opened but untrimmed. Text crisp and clean. Provenance: AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY inscribed "Dr. Henry with respects from the Author" on front free endpaper, The library of Hugh Selbourne. Fine unsophisticated dedication copy. ----Wheeler Gift 582; Norman 574 (both for 1st ed.). SECOND EDITION. This work, according to Dalton himself, "contained the germs of most of the ideas afterwards expanded by him into discoveries." (DNB V, 428-34). It contains a series of essays on barometric pressure, storm patterns, temperature, the aurora borealis, among other meteorological matters. Of importance is his observations on evaporation, including his theory that diffusion of water vapor in the atmosphere was not a chemical process. Dalton dedicated this copy to his colleague and close friend, William Henry (1775-1836). Henry is best known for the law named after him which states that the solubility of a gas is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas over the solution (Henry's law). Already in 1803, Dalton had formulated that each gas in a mixture of gases exerts a pressure proportionate to the percentage of the gas and independent of the presence of the other gases present (law of partial pressures). That combined into Dalton-Henry law, which says that, in dissolving a mixture of gases, a liquid will absorb as much of each gas in the mixture as if that were the only gas dissolved - a fundamental principle that has become important to dive physiology and medicine nowadays. Near Fine.

The Works of Robert Burns with his Life

Item Description: London - James Cochrane and Co., 1834. Hardcover. Book Condition: FINE. A beautiful set of the Works or Robert Burns with his Life by Allan Cunningham. Complete in eight volumes. Volume I contains the Life of Robert Burns by Allan Cunningham, and volumes II-VIII contain his complete works. Robert Burns (25 January 1759 21 July 1796) (also known as Robbie Burns, Rabbie Burns, Scotland's favourite son, the Ploughman Poet, Robden of Solway Firth, the Bard of Ayrshire and in Scotland as The Bard) was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. Allan Cunningham (7 December 1784 30 October 1842) was a Scottish poet and author. His father was a neighbour of Robert Burns at Ellis land and so he also later brought out this edition of Robert Burns' Works. Condition: Very Good. Postage to be agreed.

Oblong octavo, engraved frontispiece, title and 32 plates; a fine copy in original printed boards. A very good copy of this very rare illustrated Spanish edition of the costumes of the world, after the original French publication La Géographie en estampes ou mœurs et costumes des différens peuples de la terre (Paris, 1815). The French edition seems to have been republished several times, but this is the only edition of this Spanish translation of which we are aware. Each of the four main sections - Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas - has its own engraved map as a section head, the maps with interesting animals in the surrounds: the American map, for example, is surrounded by a turkey, bear, seal, beaver and a llama. The American section includes a diverse range of nationalities, including Canadians, Greenlanders, Cubans, Californians, and Patagonians, but concludes with an engraving showing Tahitians and Sandwich Islanders, with a note that these island groups are separated from America by an immense ocean, but are nonetheless the most significant in the region.New Holland makes an unusual appearance as the most distant part of Asia, although this is as much to do with convenience as geography. The Asian section begins with the Turks, and meanders its way south-eastward, featuring groups such as the Arabs, Persians, Indians, Chinese, Japanese, Tartars, Georgians, Kamchatkans, and Filipinos, before coming to rest in New Holland. The accompanying note for New Holland is perhaps surprisingly general, but does include facts such as how this "fifth part of the world" is as big as all of Europe, and now has several substantial English settlements, as well as very brief notes on the mineral wealth and animals of the continent. The engraved frontispiece is a tableau featuring a woman surrounded by the instruments of navigation, including a large terrestrial globe, charts, and telescopes; she gestures with her left hand towards a ship, while the names of Cook, La Pérouse and Bougainville are written on oval-shaped tablets at her feet. Spine renewed.

Vindication of James Mudie and John Larnach from certain reflections on their conduct... relative to the treatment by them of their convict servants.

Sydney: E.S. Hall, George Street, September, 1834. Octavo, pp. [ii], ii, lii, 3-90 (complete thus), errata slip; finely bound in full tan polished calf, spine elaborately gilt, bookplates for John Chapman and Tristan Buesst. A beautiful copy of this noted rarity: James Mudie's vindication of his role in the notorious skirmish between Mudie and irate convicts which occurred at his property at Castle Forbes, Patrick's Plains, New South Wales. Perhaps surprisingly, the pamphlet was published by Edward Smith Hall, founder of the Monitor and a long-serving editor of the Australian, who was famous for taking 'up the cause of the poor whose plight he had seen in his Benevolent Society work and "espoused the cause of any convict, who should he be ever so vile, was punished contrary to law"' (ADB).Mudie, an ex-Royal Marine, emigrated to New South Wales from Scotland in 1822. With the help of many assigned convicts he turned Castle Forbes into one of the colony's finest agricultural holdings, producing substantial quantities of wool, meat and wheat. A staunch opponent of both emancipist rights and convict privileges, in his role as Justice of the Peace he acquired a reputation as an excessively harsh magistrate, ordering floggings for the most minor offences. In November 1833 a band of convicts, who had earlier absconded from Castle Forbes, returned to the property to rob the stores. At their trial the convicts accused their master of gross ill-treatment, and their claims met with considerable public sympathy. Notwithstanding their defence, five of the men were sentenced to death, and another transported to Norfolk Island for life. After the trial, Governor Bourke instituted an inquiry into their claims, which found that although Mudie 'did not treat his servants with the same consideration for their wants and comfort which the neighbouring settlers evinced', exonerated him. Nonetheless, Mudie was incensed, and insisted that the governor forward a written protest to London. When Bourke refused, they prepared this Vindication, and printed it with the help of Hall, before dispatching it directly to the Colonial Office. Mudie returned to England vowing revenge, but in 1840 foolishly returned to Sydney, only to be publicly horse-whipped by the son of one of the judges who had been slandered in this work.A pencil inscription on the endpaper of this copy, signed by the Melbourne book dealer A.H. Spencer, notes that it is 'excessively rare... I have only seen two copies of this rare book'.

Vol. I: lxx, 272 (i.e. 274) pp., including p. 150bis./150ter inserted after p.150 and two folding tables, without 8 pp. publisher's adverts. Vol. II: x, xcvi, 180 pp. and two tables on one folding sheet as issued. Contemporary half calfs over marbled boards, spines lettered and decorated in gilt (disparate bindings, little rubbing to boards and extremities), marbled endpapers in first vol. Pages partially untrimmed and unopened. Paper shows light foxing (stronger to title-pages, tables and final leaves), otherweise crisp, bright and unstained. Closed tear at head of half-title affecting dedication (but without loss) and torn paper at blank lower gutter of half-title. First volume, half-title page, with dedication by the André-Marie Ampère to his friend Dupré** and with a signed double-page manuscript with information about the author in neat hand by Ballanche***, dated 26 July 1836, inserted between half-title and title-page. Second volume with two inserted ALS, the first by Jean-Jacques Ampère* to M. Dupré, dated 3 February 1842 (two pages on one sheet, slightly trimmed at fore-edge), and the second by André-Marie Ampère also directed to Dupré and dated 24 March 1824 (4 pages on two folding sheets, the 2nd sheet with two holes with loss of text).FIRST EDITIONS, including the augmented second part issued by Andre Ampère's son Jean-Jacques in 1843. A Curious work, unfortunately a little complicated and obscured by the use of many unusual scientific terms: orychtotechnie, cerdoristique, phytographie (...). A remarkable fruit of an apparently materialistic philosophy, not very concordant with the general idea of the great electrician Ampere. (Caillet). *Ampère, Jean-Jacques (1800-1864) was a French philologist and man of letters. Born in Lyon, he was the only son of the physicist André-Marie Ampère. Jean-Jacques' mother died while he was an infant. He taught at the Sorbonne, and became professor of the history of French literature at the Collège de France and in 1848 he was elected member of the Académie française. **Dupré, Pierre(?) was prefect of the city of Provins and a close friend of André-Marie Ampère. >br>***Ballanche, Pierre-Simon (1776-1847) was a French writer and counterrevolutionary philosopher, who elaborated a theology of progress that possessed considerable influence in French literary circles in the beginning of the nineteenth century. He was the ninth member elected to occupy seat 4 of the Académie française in 1842. Jean-Jacques Ampère published a biography about Ballanche in 1849. Very Good.

Autograph letter signed "Spontini" to [Johann Valentin] Teichmann.

1 page. Octavo. Dated [Berlin,] December [?]28, 1834. In French (with translation). Spontini asks Teichmann to thank those involved in a production of his opera, Agnes, for which he would also like seats for that evening's performance. "I beg Councillor Teichmann to convey my regards to the choir members, extra choir members, the two choir directors and Mrs. Hochstetter, as well as to several assistants who led the rehearsals of Agnes with zeal and talent, to which Mr. Henning, the music director, contributed the most of all." Slightly worn, browned, foxed and stained; creased at folds and somewhat overall; several edge tears; some show-through; remnants of former mount to verso. Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory - concentrating on performances of Cimarosa and Mozart - into practice at the Théâtre Italien. In July he was awarded a newly created prize for the best opera of the decade, for La vestale, and in the same month he married Marie-Cathérine-Céleste Erard, daughter of the pianoforte maker and publisher Jean-Baptiste Erard. After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online. His last opera, Agnes von Hohenstaufen, was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Berlin on June 12, 1829. After extensive revisions, a second version was performed on December 6, 1837; the present letter most probably refers to a production of the second version of the work. Spontini was the Generalmusikdirektor and leading musician at the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm III in Berlin at this time, where he was welcomed by such prominent intellectuals as E.T.A. Hoffmann. A devotee of the theater, Johann Valentin Teichmann (1791-1860) was in close contact with prominent artists, musicians, and dramatic poets in Berlin. His literary output included a history of the Royal Theatre in Berlin from 1740 to 1840 and a collected edition of letters from writers, such as Goethe and Schiller, who corresponded with the Royal Theatre.

A General Map of China Chinese-Tartary & Tibet drawn from the Particular Maps of the Jesuits

New York: John P. Haven, 1834. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 19 x 28 1/2". This 1834 map by Charles Gutzlaff depicting China and Chinese Tartary and Tibet is based on the 1734 map by Jean Baptise Bourguignon d'Anville. Extends from the Caspian Sea east to include Manchuria and south to Hainan. The map was compiled from Jesuit surveys carried out for Emperor Kangxi in the early 18th century. Includes Japan, Tibet, China, Mongolia and parts of Central Asia. Identifies mountains, islands, cities, towns, rivers, lakes, deserts, and a host of other topographical features. Includes Chinese text.

This map was issued with corrections to the d'Anville map by Rev. Charles Gutzlaff. Published by John P. Haven and lithographed by Stodart and Currier. In good condition with minor toning and wear along original folds. Closed tear at mounting tab and minor edge wear.

Nathaniel Currier (1813 - 1888) was an American Illustrator and founder of the successful printmaking firm Currier and Ives. This particular map is an early example of Nathaniel Currier's work before his partnership with Ives. In 1833, Currier moved to New York and after his earlier partner John Pendleton backed out, the firm became Currier and Stodart. The Currier and Stodart firm only lasted for one year, and this map is a beautiful example of their work during the firms short lifetime.

Journal of a recent visit to the Vineyards of Spain and France

London: Smith, Elder, 1834. Spine rubbed, joints slightly wearing but strong.. Octavo, a good copy in contemporary half calf. The rare London edition of Busby's influential work, following its original Sydney publication in 1833. It describes Busby's four-month tour of Europe, during which he collected four hundred and thirty-seven cuttings from Montpellier Botanical Gardens and one hundred and thirty-three from the Luxembourg Gardens. By January 1833 the vines - which Busby donated to the government - had arrived by convict ship Camden and were flourishing in the Sydney Botanic Gardens. But when Busby returned to Sydney from New Zealand in 1840 he could find no trace of them. However duplicates had been planted in his own vineyard at Kirkton in the Hunter Valley. Kirkton was taken over by Lindemans in 1914, and was the country's oldest continually producing vineyard until it was abandoned in 1924, but only after Busby's hard-won vine-stocks had become the basis of chardonnay in Australia. This is seemingly the rarest of any of Busby's three revolutionary works on wine. Scotsman James Busby (1801-1871) was the most important single figure in the early history of the Australian wine industry. His three books had an enormous effect on the industry. He had published Treatise on the Culture of the Vine in 1825; it was largely a compilation from European writers, addressed to 'the attention of the higher classes', but it prompted Governor Brisbane to encourage him in practical experimentation. A second work, his 1830 Manual of Plain Directions, was for decades the only really helpful book on the actual methods of making wine, and copies of it are measurably rarer than the preceding book in our experience, no doubt because it was so much used and consulted.Although now keenly pursued because of their significance to the Australian wine trade, it is important to remember that all three of Busby's books had international interest precisely because of their detailed and practical nature, which set out the basics of winemaking in an accessible fashion. This is particularly true of this, the last of the three, which attempted to draw out rules and practices that could have international application. It was immediately hailed as an important book in Europe, and a New York edition was produced a year after this London version, for the fledgling American wine-making industry. Yet another London edition appeared under a changed title in 1839. Very little work has been done on Busby's influence in Europe, let alone in America, but it would be fair to say he had a significant international impact, and did a great deal towards spreading the vigneron gospel away from the traditional heartland of France and Spain. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney).

Journal of a recent visit to the Vineyards of Spain and France.

London: Smith, Elder, 1834. Spine rubbed, joints slightly wearing but strong.

[Québec; Ontario, 1834. [6] leaves, each approximately 7 3/4 x 5 inches. Loose sheets. Corners rounded. Light tanning at edges. Very good. A series of six small manuscript maps showing significant places in southern Canada along the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes, including Niagara. The composer also provides lists of distances and informational bullet points concerning each location, such as notes on population and growth, geography, river navigation, and historical points of interest. Of the two maps of the Niagara border region, the first shows the length of the river between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and the second depicts the area of the Falls themselves. The map of York contains information about its population in 1832, and the town was incorporated as Toronto in 1834; as a result, the maps can be dated to this period. Bleistift-Anm. a. fl.
