        History of New Jersey .

1834 - GORDON, THOMAS F. The History of New Jersey, from its Discovery by Europeans, to the Adoption of the Federal Constitution. Trenton, 1834. xii, 339 p. [Bound with:] A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey, Comprehending a General View of its Physical and Moral Condition, Together with a Topographical and Statistical Account of its Counties, Towns, Villages, Canals, Rail Roads, &c. Trenton, 1834. iv, 266 p. Handcolored folding map (very skillfully and unobtrusively repaired on the verso). Contemporary sheep (light scuffs at the extremities but very tight). Text foxed, as with all copies of this book. A very desirable copy. The second history of New Jersey, bound with, as issued, the first gazetteer of the state. The latter is an essential reference tool for locating early towns and communities, and it remained the only gazetteer of New Jersey for almost fifty years. This is one of the cornerstone New Jersey books, and copies are usually found without the map and in dry, lifeless bindings. This copy is unusually nice and tight. For a lengthy study of this important book, see Felcone, New Jersey Books, 726-727.

War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes

1834. (MCKENNY, Thomas and HALL, James) RINDISBACHER, Peter. War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes. Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle (Childs & Lehman, lithographers), 1834. Original hand-colored lithograph (sheet measures 21 by 15 inches); window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1800.Original hand-colored lithograph from McKenney and HallÂ’s monumental Indian Tribes of North America. An early specialist in watercolor scenes of frontier life, Swiss-born Peter Rindisbacher is credited as being ""the first pioneer artist recording genre of Western Indians"" (Samuels, 400). His ""War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes"" (1834) served as the frontispiece for Volume II of the folio edition of McKenney and Hall's famous History of the Indian Tribes of North America (1838). Thomas McKenney, long-time Superintendent of Indian Affairs under Presidents Madison, Monroe, Adams and Jackson, often dreamt of an Indian Archive, ""preserved for the information of future generations and long after the Indians will have been no more."" Over a number years, McKenney commissioned paintings which were produced as hand-colored lithographs by several printing houses— among them Childs, Inman, Lehman and Duval. The first volume of McKenney's portfolio was published in February 1837, a culmination of eight years of effort. The book met with great success and subscriptions swelled. This fine hand-colored lithograph of Rindisbacher's Sauk and Fox Dance of the Wabanna was documented by McKenney as ""drawn on the spot as the scene was actually exhibited. The actors are persons of some note, and the faces are faithful likenesses"" (Horan, 166). It also appeared in Murray's Travels in North America (London, 1839), one of the earliest western travel books. Impression fine, colors true, lightly embrowned. A handsome print.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition.         Remarks on Transportation and on a Recent Defence of the System; in a second letter to Earl Grey.

London: B. Fellowes, 1834. Octavo, contemporary full polished calf, spine gilt with morocco label. Richard Whately was an enthusiastic agitator against transportation (his influential 1832 pamphlet Thoughts on Secondary Punishments led in part to the House of Commons select committee inquiry) this was founded on his belief that punishment and effective colonization were contradictory aims. Being an ardent penal reformer, he believed that prisoners should know the real meaning of their sentences and was therefore a supporter of certain sentences being irremissible. He became an enthusiastic phrenologist and had a cast of his head made at Oxford in 1831, submitting it to three phrenologists in all. He sympathized with George Combe's view of phrenology as the philosophy of the New Testament. It was another example of the compatibility of Christianity with the new sciences, and in particular a 'scientific' demonstration of man's moral faculty.

        Doctor

1834. First Edition . (SOUTHEY, Robert). The Doctor, &c. London: Longman et al., 1834-38. Five volumes. Octavo, original green cloth, original paper spine labels, uncut. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.First edition of SoutheyÂ’s anonymous miscellany The Doctor, best known for containing the first appearance in print of “The Three Bears.” “Any text of the story published before 1850 is a rare and desirable possession” (Quayle, 39).The Doctor was the last major work by this English poet laureate. SoutheyÂ’s “prose style has long been regarded as masterly in its ease and clarity. These qualities are best seen inÂ… the anonymously published seven-volume The Doctor (1834-47), a fantastic, rambling miscellany packed with comments, quotations, and anecdotes” (Kuiper, 1055). “The Three Bears,” based on a traditional tale, appears in Volume IV on pages 318-26; this version has a “Little Old Woman” instead of Goldilocks. Goldilocks would not appear as such until 1904; in a 1858 version, she is called “Silver-Locks” (Carpenter & Pritchard, 524). Different typefaces and type sizes are used in SoutheyÂ’s version to indicate different characters: for example, Papa BearÂ’s dialogue is printed in large Gothic type. Volumes I through V of The Doctor appeared during SoutheyÂ’s lifetime; Volumes VI and VII (not included here), edited by his son-in-law, were published in 1847, four years after SoutheyÂ’s death (Lowndes, 2460). Volume IV with 16-page publisherÂ’s catalogue dated June 1837. Without front free endpapers in Volumes I-III and V. Bookplates.Interior quite clean; mild wear to original cloth extremities, some chipping and wear to paper spine labels. Extremely good condition. Scarce.

An Historical and Statistical Account of New South Wales both as a Penal Settlement and as a British Colony...

London: 1834. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding map; in original green cloth with paper labels on spines. First edition. Lang, a Presbyterian minister, arrived in the colony in 1823. He was possessed of enormous energy, and "pushed his way to power at once", as H.M. Green says, with "a great wave of popularity and dissension foaming at his bows and leaving a wide wake behind him". This is an attack on the emancipists, among others, by Wentworth's major rival, and is Lang's most important work. Although Lang shared with Wentworth the desire to encourage immigration and implement self-government, he in fact went further in wanting independence. A very good copy.
