        Remains in Verse and Prose.

[London:] [privately] printed by W. Nicol, 1834 - Octavo (199 × 125 mm). Contemporary black full morocco, spine with raised bands and titles gilt direct, all edges gilt. Extremities worn, titles dulled, covers scraped and marked, chips at the head, but entirely sound and with only occasional light spotting, a good copy in the original binding. Without half-title but with first and final blanks. First edition, presentation copy inscribed "from the editor" by the author's father on the first blank, evidently presented to Stephen Spring Rice (1814-65) with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Spring Rice was a friend and contemporary of A. H. Hallam and Tennyson at Trinity College and a fellow member of the Cambridge Apostles. He appears to have annotated this copy in pencil. As an Anglo-Irishman he was later appointed Secretary of the British Relief Association raising money to assuage the potato famine. Remains in Verse and Prose was Henry Hallam's touching memoir of his son, the private publication of which came about at the instigation of Arthur's friends, chief among them Alfred Tennyson, who felt that his writings deserved a wider audience after his premature death in Switzerland in September 1834. The memoir is better as a demonstration of Arthur Henry Hallam's thinking than as an account of his life, however, as his father expunged from the record his "infatuation with Anna Wintour, his engagement to Emily Tennyson, and his adventures in Spain" (ODNB), that is, Arthur and Alfred's abortive effort to aid the Spanish rebellion against Ferdinand VII. Hallam's death was of course the inspiration for Tennyson's In Memoriam (1851), and several other elegiac classics, such as "Break, Break, Break" and "Morte D'Arthur". The book itself is certainly scarce, and the presentation is particularly appealing with its Trinity Cambridge association. We can only trace four presentation copies at auction in the past half century (three from Henry Hallam, one from Tennyson). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Contemporary owner's name ("A.C. Winslow") on front fly, modest foxing, small stains and small tears in the text, some soiling on the boards, a sound and intact about very good copy. Interestingly, among the signatories listed from Maine are both a Nathan Winslow and an Isaac Winslow. How they were related to the owner of this book, if at all, is not clear.

A VISIT TO TEXAS: BEING THE JOURNAL OF A TRAVELLER THROUGH THOSE PARTS MOST INTERESTING TO AMERICAN SETTLERS. WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF SCENERY, HABITS, &c. &c

New York: Goodrich & Wiley, 1834. iv,[9-]264,[4]pp. plus four engraved plates and handcolored folding maps. Original pebbled cloth, spine gilt, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Edges slightly worn, moderate foxing. Map with three closed tears, expertly repaired. About very good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell box. An early account of Texas, which Howes notes has been attributed variously to a Dr. M. Fiske and a Col. Morris. "This anonymous work is one of the most important accounts of Texas during a critical period in its history" - Jenkins. The author arrived in Brazoria, Texas, in March of 1831, to see the country and check on land titles he bought from the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. He vents his anger after being told that the scrip he holds has no value, but his view of Texas is generally a positive one. The narrative includes the description of a journey from Brazoria to Harrisburg, Anahuac, Galveston Island, and San Felipe. The trip was undertaken just a few months before that of Mary Austin Holley. A work of great importance, with plates said to be the earliest representations of sporting scenes in the American West, and with the often lacking folding map of Texas. HOWES T145, "aa."       Berlin 1834 - (32,5 x 25,5 cm). Titel verso gestempelt.       Numerous woodcut illus. in the text. 168 folding leaves (several leaves misnumbered). Large thick 8vo, orig. wrappers (slightly soiled), orig. block-printed title labels on upper cover, new stitching. Edo & Osaka: 1834. Second edition. Both this and the first edition of 1832 are rather rare in libraries; WorldCat locates no copy of either edition. Hasegawa (1782-1838 or 1839), a leading member of the Seki school of mathematics, made a series of notable contributions to geometry. In his Sanpo shinsho of 1830, he "provided an extensive coverage of everything from practical mathematics using the abacus to the circular principles, but also included some of the Seki school's prime secrets. The book's format was very similar to Western texts, first giving theoretical explanations, then problems and their methods of solution, but with no exercise problems. It was easily understood and widely welcome by wasan students."-Sugimoto & Swain, Science & Culture in Tradition Japan, p. 366. The present work was a sequel, very much in the same style, as the Sanpo shinsho. A number of illustrations depict abacus. Fine fresh copy but with a little worming in the gutter to about 30 folding leaves.

L'Aspirant de Marine Opéra Comique en deux Actes Paroles de MMrs. Rochefort & Decomberousse... avec Accompt. de Piano par V. Rifaut. [Piano-vocal score]

Paris: J. Delahante, 1834. A French harpist and composer, Labarre studied the harp with Bochsa, Cousineau and Nadermann and composition with Boieldieu. "The musical style of his operas derives from the works of Boieldieu and Adam, and anticipates those of Offenbach; although they never achieved the popularity of Meyerbeer or Halévy, several of his works, such as Jovita, remained in the repertory throughout the 1850s... He was a conductor at the Opéra-Comique from 1847 to 1849, and later was appointed director of the imperial chapel. He succeeded Antoine Prumier as professor of harp at the Paris Conservatoire (1867-70), where Léon Gatayes and Félix Godefroid were among his pupils. During the last years of his life he was music critic for Paris illustré. He was admitted to the Légion d'Honneur in 1862." Frédéric Robert and Fiona Clampin in Grove Music Online. Gomis, a Spanish composer, knew Manuel García and was befriended by Rossini. "Between 1831 and 1836 Gomis wrote the music for four operas performed at the Opéra-Comique: Le diable à Seville, about General Riego's 1820 army rebellion; Le revenant, based on 'Wandering Willie's Tale' in Scott's Redgauntlet, and much praised for the 'Chanson du sabbat'; Le portefaix, his most successful opera; and Rock le barbu, acclaimed for the purity of its melodies." Set shows wear at spines, Heads to Vols. 13 & 14 chipped, internally bright. 440 color-plates. Complete. 14 vols. Small 8vo. ORNITHOLOGY ONLY. Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library is a monument to Victorian industry and zeal for natural history education. On account of the high-quality hand-colored illustrations, it is seldom found complete. The work is divided into four main sections: Ornithology, Mammalia, Entomology and Ichthyology; each was prepared by a leading naturalist. Among the artists who contributed to this massive work was Edward Lear, whose illustrations include 1 uncolored and 37 colored plates in Mammalia vol. II (1834); 1 uncolored and 31 colored plates in Ornithology vol. V (Pigeons, 1835); and 1 uncolored and 31 colored plates in Ornithology vol. VI (Parrots, 1836)."Each volume contains a biography of a well-known naturalist in addition to the subject matter, which comprises a brief treatment of the individual forms with a statement of synonyms, distribution, brief descriptions and sometimes other information of interest" (Copenhagen/Anker). Sir William Jardine (1800-1874) was a key figure in the history of Victorian science. He owned the finest private natural history museum and library in Britain.
