      Scarborough: Published by John Cole, Library, New Borough Street; And by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, & Green, London, 1825. Very Good. One of only two copies printed on white satin by the Scarborough antiquary and publisher, John Cole. Octavo. pp. [i-viii], [1] 2-103 [104-131] 132-148 [149-150 (ads)]. Illustrated with two full-page wood engravings printed on inserted leaves: the frontispiece: "Scarborough Cliff Bridge"; and facing p. 48: "Iron Chest, Found in the Palace Scarbro'". There are also four in-text wood engravings. A very rare example of a book printed in its entirety on silk, with a limitation statement written presumably in Cole's hand in ink on the front free endpaper: "Only 2 Copies of this work printed on white Satin, & 2 on pink satin." Bound in printed silk over boards (printed on the front, spine, and back cover). The cloth is rubbed with some soiling and loss to backstrip, foxing to the endpapears, very good. Engraved armorial bookplate of John Rhodes ("ung Durant Ma Vie") on the front pastedown, and two small early ownership signatures on the front free endpaper (in ink and in pencil). Laid-in is a printed business card: "The South Cliff Hair Cutting and Shampooing Saloons" with a wood-engraved view of Sarborough. Although printing on silk has always been uncommon because of the technical challenges involved, it enjoyed a brief vogue during the first quarter of the nineteenth century with the advent of white-line wood engraving. Entire books printed on satin are rarely encountered. A fine example.

First published in 1823, this is a work promoting the theory that the American Indians were descendants of the lost tribes of Israel, and some suggest that it may have influenced Joseph Smith, whose Book of Mormon appeared in 1830. A Congregational minister in Vermont, Ethan Smith (1762-1849) was not the originator of this theory, first voiced in the 17th century and appearing in the writings of Jonathan Edwards, Elias Boudinot, William Penn, and others, but the present work has drawn attention as the one that most closely parallels the revelations Joseph Smith set forth in the founding document of the Mormon Church. Both works rely heavily on the prophecies of Isaiah and suggest that the Indians came to America by sea for religious reasons, and that they were divided into civilized and uncivilized groups, with the latter destroying the former in a series of wars. The biographer of Joseph Smith, Fawn Brodie, notes, "It may never be proved that Joseph saw 'View of the Hebrews' before writing the Book of Mormon, but the striking parallelisms between the two books hardly leave a case for mere coincidence." In "A Book of Mormon Study," B. H. Roberts compared the works and found 26 similarities between the two, but according to "The Encyclopedia of Mormonism," he "did not draw any conclusions that Joseph Smith used Ethan Smith's work to write the Book of Mormon.". 180 x 105 mm. A Congregational minister in Vermont, Ethan Smith (1762-1849) was not the originator of this theory, first voiced in the 17th century and appearing in the writings of Jonathan Edwards, Elias Boudinot, William Penn, and others, but the present work has drawn attention as the one that most closely parallels the revelations Joseph Smith set forth in the founding document of the Mormon Church. Both works rely heavily on the prophecies of Isaiah and suggest that the Indians came to America by sea for religious reasons, and that they were divided into civilized and uncivilized groups, with the latter destroying the former in a series of wars. Two volumes. 8vo. iv, 829; [ii], 832 pp. Pictorial boarder on title, numerous wood cut illus., index; few pp. (17, 33, 49, 65) in vol. 1 are rubber ink stamped on bottom margins with second or third editions even though this is a first edition. Original full gilt and blind stamped calf, elaborately rebacked in blind & gilt with red and black spine title labels; extremities rubbed, boards on corners showing. E.F. HUTTON'S COPY: Lovely bookplates of Edward Francis Hutton (designed & engraved by E.B. Bird for Tiffany & Co.). Very good. The volumes, published in 1825, turned out to be a 'National Enquirer' or 'Weekly World News' style collection of salacious, disgusting, and scary stories, complete with illustrations. The illustrations are woodcuts, by an un-credited, but evidently talented artist. The illustrations all appear to have been completed by the same person. Terrific Register was initially published as a cheap weekly serial, or 'penny dreadful', which Charles Dickens read as a child, and later reported that it had "frightened my very wits out of my head." This book is a collection of those weekly publications into a multivolume set.... The preface states: "Satisfied that the real welfare of mankind ought to be the object of our labors, we were persuaded that by selecting from the histories of individuals and of empires, instances of suffering, induced by human folly, and of crime, perpetrated by human depravity, we should excite that sympathy, and arouse that indignation which are essential to the end we had in view. For this purpose, we ransacked the various sources of information open to us, and have brought into a focus a vast body of matter that lay scattered and even concealed from public inspection; and this matter it is impossible to peruse without the most intense interest" The editors continue, "Who can, unmoved, contemplate the resolves and decrees of bloody-minded men or those awful calamities by which the fiat of heaven frequently overwhelms us? BOOKPLATE: Elisha Brown Bird (1867-1943) was a graphic artist whose work was applied to numerous projects including illustrated sheet music, posters, etc. He worked with books as well, including the cover and endpapers for Oliver Herford's An Alphabet of Celebrities (1899); co-illustrated Eediotic/Idiotic Etiquette: An Up to Date Manual of the Manners of Men and Women for Men and Women of Manners, and a Complete Catalogue of Social Dues and Most of the Don'ts for All Disciples of Deportment: Distilled Directly from the Raw Material (1906); The Foolish Dictionary (1904); and many more. Bird was prolific in bookplate design. In 1904, Winfred Porter Truesdale wrote a survey and catalogue raisonné in collaboration with the artist: E.B. Bird: His Bookplates (Boston: Troutsdale Press).          Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

      Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY: July 2, 1825. Letter sheets (8" x 12") 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds, mostly archival tape, but some regular tape too, which has caused a little browning in areas, long tear obscures writers signature, but partially visible, creased, normal aging and browning, remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission, and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson (1803-1880), although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However, on the back page, a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer, and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case, the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires, than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires, which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants, the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.

In 1823 he and his wife, after some months spent in Madeira and Cape Verde Islands, arrived at Bathurst (now Banjul) at the mouth of the Gambia intending to undertake a trigonometric survey and then to explore Sierra Leone. Es ist der Hinterteil eines Brüllaffen der von Charles Waterton, der ein Präparierungsexperte und -pionier war, so umgeformt worden ist. Dieses Muster ist heute noch im Wakefield Museum zu sehen. Waterton brachte das erste Curare für wissenschaftliche und medizinische Verwendung nach Europa nachdem er seine Wirkung und seinen Nutzen am Ort seiner Entstehung beobachtet hatte. Diese Buch enthält eine detaillierte Beschreibung der lähmenden Wirkung dieses Giftes. - The frontispiece, named 'A Nondescript" is the bottom of a howler monkey which he turned into an almost human face and labelled 'The Nondescript'. Edizione originale del Decamerone curato dal Foscolo, nella variante citata dall'Acchiappati [II, 122] priva di figure: "L'oculato esame dell'esemplare consente non solo di confermare senza possibilità di dubbio l'esistenza di una variante senza illustrazioni, ma di preceisare che di essa variante esistono due diverse sub varianti editoriali: la presente e quella descritta da Mazzolà, la quale riprodiuce esattamente la variante con le illustrazioni . salirebbero così a cinque le varianti dell'edizione". Si contano ben cinque varianti dell'edizione: variante con le tavole, variante senza le tavole che riproduce esattamente quella con le tavole (uguale al nostro esemplare), un'altra sempre priva di tavole con una differente disposizione delle pagine nei volumi, variante stampata su carta grande di China e infine l'ultima che conta 25 esemplari stampati su carta India.          AN ASTONISHING PLOT BETWEEN BROTHERS TO PREVENT THE MANUMISSION OF A FAMILY SLAVE AS DECREED IN THE WILL OF THEIR FATHER ; Folded-letter from Thomas Lowry of Kentucky to his brothers in Virginia

      Hardinsburg, Kentucky 1825 - This three-page folded-letter measures 14.75" x 12.25" unfolded. Sent from Hardinsburg, Kentucky to Bedford, Virginia, dated March 14th, 1825. It has a manuscript "Hardingsburg Ky / Mar 15th" postmark with a "Paid 50" rate marking indicating that postage was paid for a delivery over 400 miles distant. The sender was charged double the single-letter rate because the folded-letter contained legal form (no longer present). The letter is in nice shape with some wear; splits beginning along some folds. Lots of docketing. In this letter that will make your skin crawl, Thomas Lowry emphatically encourages his brothers John, William, and Triptellto commit perjury in a pending lawsuit filed by a family slave, Sam. It had been their father's long-time intention that upon his death that Sam would be emancipated, and shortly before his death, he included this provision in a will and informed Sam. Upon his father's death, Thomas refused to grant Sam his freedom. Sam obtained legal counsel and filed suit against the estate. "Sam has brought suit for his freedom the grounds that he brings suit on is from a will that Farther maid a few months before he died In this will he set Sam free this will were maid onknoing to me as soon as I hurd I went and drew the will . . . and I thought it were all safe [but] Sam advised with the lawyers and thay advised him to bring suit . . . I want you to remember when Farther delivered Brother William his negroes that he delivered Sam to you and . . . said to you I want you to let Sam stay with me my lifetime . . . you agreed to do so . . . I want you to prove by Brother William and Triptell . . . that Sam was delivered to you when you were here. If you can't prove Sam ware your property the case will be very doubtfull . . . If you cant prove [that] you must come and take him in persession and you can prove by me he ware your property at the time the will ware maid. . . . The coarse Ile persew is to try and break the will on the account of farthers being out of his elements. I can prove by 4 or 5 withnesses that he ware out of his natural elements before and after he maid the will [but] Sam can prove . . . Farther ware in his perfect elements . . . William Scanton roat the will and Barryamen Lowry witness to the will and they both say they will sware that farther was in his proper elements at the that time. . . . My atterney says the main chance is to prove that he ware not Fathers property . . . I am yousing every creation within my powerss . . . Moorman is strong evidence against me he says he always herd father say he intended to free Sam at his death . . . You must without fail take the depositions [and] employ some good lawyer to . . . send them on as quick as possible." A unique example that not only documents the evil of slavery and one family's greed, but also testifies to the integrity of other white Southerners who were willing to fight in court to ensure Sam was manumitted.

Only edition of an account of the artistic treasures of Wittenberg, compiled and partly-illustrated by the sculptor Schadow, who as his sight deteriorated had turned more to writing art theory and history and to graphic work (he was a proficient draughtsman, engraver, and lithographer). The publication celebrates Schadow's bronze statue of Luther, designed between 1802 (the date of a competition sponsored by the Vaterländische-Litterarische Gesellschaft der Grafschaft Mansfeld) and 1820, and unveiled in the Marktplatz in Wittenberg for the Reformationsfest on 31 October 1821. A folding lithograph by Schadow himself records the Luther statue from three sides; an anonymous engraving depicts it beneath a canopy made to Karl Friedrich Schinkel's designs; and another by the Berlin printmaker Ferdinand Berger serves to introduce the volume (frontispiece). Among the many illustrations are engravings reproducing sculptural monuments in the Schlosskirche (Allerheiligen) and Stadtkirche (Marienkirche), Lucas Cranach the elder's altarpiece in the Stadtkirche, and lithograph portraits of Peter Vischer and Lucas Cranach the elder by Schadow, and an impressive self-portrait.
