- 4°, contemporary plain wrappers (spine chipped, corner missing from upper wrapper, remains of contemporary orange wrappers). Woodcut Portuguese royal arms on title page. Woodcut vignette at foot of p. 23. Slight marginal foxing and very slight worming in lower margin, title-page lightly soiled. Overall in good to very good condition. 36 pp. *** First collected edition of this vindication of the actions taken in 1819 by the Conde de Villa Flor as Governor and Captain General of Pará against against Manuel da Costa and others. Villa Flor had attempted to crack down on an illicit trade in diamonds and the accused, in the course of their defense, made counter-accusations against the Governor. The Conde de Villa Flor (1792-1860), later Duke of Terceira and four times Prime Minister of Portugal (1836, 1851, 1842-1846 e 1859-1860), one of the most important Portuguese military and political figures of his time, served early in his career as Governor and Captain General of Pará (1817-1820). Here, by reprinting the relevant official documents, he defends himself against charges that he had unjustly detained and imprisoned a resident of Pará and searched his home for incriminating papers.*** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 923. Rodrigues 2545. Not in Innocêncio. Not in JCB, Portuguese and Brazilian Books. On the author see Grande enciclopédia XXXI, 330-3. NUC: NIC. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Harmlose Bemerkungen auf einer Reise über Petersburg, Moskau, Kiew nach Jassy.

Berlin, [Johann Friedrich Starcke] for Schüppelsche Buchhandlung, 1822. Small 8vo. Contemporary Central European half-calf over marbled boards with gilt-stamped red moroco lettering piece on spine; pp. [iv], 248; spine and corners worn; internally very clean and fresh; provenance: contemporary stamp Bibliotheca Sceensis (Romania) on title-verso. Very rare first edition of an entertaining and infoRmative travelogue, written by a teacher, writer and traveler of Greek origin, born in Silesia in 1773, and living for some time in Altona, near Hamburg. Kosmeli wrote several books, all of which are extremely hard to find, with light and satirical undertones reminiscent of Jean Paul's romantic irony, or Heine. This is the account of his journey to Saint Petersburg, Moscow and to Iasi in Romania. Wherever he went Kosmeli observed with sympathy Jewish life, and moving through Russia to the South and Romania, the situation of the Greek minorities.

         Confessions of an English Opium-Eater

London: Taylor and Hessey, 1822. First edition. Half-title present and without the final leaf of ads. vi, 206 pp. printed by J. Moyes, Greville Street. 12mo. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked. Handsome copy. First edition. Half-title present and without the final leaf of ads. vi, 206 pp. printed by J. Moyes, Greville Street. 12mo. The Classic of Opium Addiction. First edition of the first part of De Quincey's classic, the author's first book, the complete text of which did not appear until Boston, 1850. "Thomas De Quincey began using opium in 1802 and continued to use it on and off, passing through no less than four opium crises, during the course of his life...From the very first the impact of the Confessions has been virtually incalculable. A genre of literature was at once established that stands to this day: the drug confession. Every writer of drug literature has paid his respects to De Quincey; and of course two of France's greatest poets Musset and Baudelaire, translated Confessions. Its literary quality has also caused De Quincey's first work to be placed in the top rank of English literature; its scientific precision has brought it to the attention of physicians and medical historians. The Confessions is among the classic works of English Romanticism, and yet it was decades before its author would dare put his name upon the title-page." - Horowitz.          Message from the President of the United States, to Both Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the Second Session of the Seventeenth Congress

Washington, DC: Printed By Gales & Seaton. 1822. F First Edition. Wraps. Good -. Slight stains, rubbing, browning and/or foxing throughout (chiefly to extremities); small holes at spine edges (disbound); slight wear to head of spines and foredges. 12 pages (including wrappers). Upper wrapper title. At head of title: 1 (in brackets). Text of the message, outlining both foreign and domestic policies and agenda, with emphasis on the former (with reference to the South American wars of independence in particular) and with additional military and naval impetus with regard to the latter. Monroe's remarks in the concluding paragraph have an oddly contemporary ring: "The United States owe to the world a great example, and, by means thereof, to the cause of liberty and humanity, a generous support ... There is no reason to doubt, that their whole movement will be regulated by a sacred regard to principle ... It has been often charged against free governments, that they have neither the foresight, nor the virtue, to provide, at the proper season, for great emergencies; that their course is improvident and expensive; that war will always find them unprepared, and ... that its terrible warnings will be disregarded and forgotten as soon as peace returns. I have full confidence that this charge, so far as it relates to the United States, will be shewn to be utterly destitute of truth." Dated December 3, 1822 on upper wrapper ("Printed by order of the Senate of the United States"; upper wrapper) and at foot of page 12. With unidentified holograph ink annotation at head of upper wrapper: "Clerk's Table" (most likely that belonging to an unidentified congressional clerk); an unique copy in any case. Monroe (1758-1831), American statesman and 5th US President (1817-25); also notable as minister to France (1794), Secretary of State under Madison (1811) and also (briefly) Secretary of War (1814-15); administration best known for the policy of non- colonization of the European powers in the Americas (generally known as the "Monroe Doctrine", 1823) and for the annexation of Florida (1819).
