-Hirschberg.First edition. A monograph on the horizontal section of the eye. This was the doctoral dissertation of D.W. Soemmering, the son of the famous anatomist. The volume is illustrated with some detailed and beautiful copperplates after the autor's drawings. An extract of this book in English translation was published at Copenhagen in 1971 (Becker 347) Hirschberg, 3 464 & 539 Goring. p. 19 Hirsch V, 331."The fascinating diversity of vertebrate ocular structure was first captured in a single work by Soemmering in 1818. Over a century and a half after their publication, Soemmering's engravings still raise a host of intriguing questions regarding how the vertebrate eye works as an optical system. Equally intriguing are the questions which are raised about the functions of the variety of eye shapes and sizes and the subsequent elucidation of general principles which may account for the diversity of eye structures."       , May 1818. May 1818. Large and highly impressive printed document, 17" x 20", representing an agreement between Moses Goodrich, Master of the Sloop Catherine of New Bedford and the ship's crew "now bound for the Port of St. Thomas and a Market in the West Indies". Signed by the Master and crew on the bottom of the document, where the monthly wages are listed. Each crew member is identified by name, station (mariner, cook, seaman, mate), amount of money advanced before sailing, "hospital money" (67 cents) and amounts due. The entries are further noted and witnessed on the blank lower margin, all dated between April 10, 1818 and May 5, 1818.The front of the document bears an attractive and striking reprint of the "Act for the Government and Regulation of Seamen in the Merchants' Service", a spread-eagle device in the top center. The Act requires that "every master or commander of any ship or vessel bound from a port in the United States, to any foreign port... shall, before he proceed on such voyage, make an agreement in writing or in print, with every seaman or mariner on board such ship or vessel".          Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire,

1818 - usually called the Congo, in South Africa, in 1816 . to which is added the journal of Professor Smith. First edition. Folding map, one hand-coloured & 12 other plates. 4to. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt, extremities rubbed, some foxing to plates. lxxxii, 498pp. London, John Murray, Tuckey was appointed first lieutenant of the Calcutta in 1802, and sailed out to New South Wales to establish a colony at Port Phillip, an account of which he published on his return: The Account of a Voyage to Establish a Colony at Port Phillip(1805). Captured by the French whilst on convoy duty Tuckey was imprisoned until the peace of 1814, but his imprisonment provided the opportunity to write Maritime Geography & Statistics which was published on his return to England (4 vols., 1815). With such experience Tuckey was therefore an obvious choice to lead an expedition to establish the course of the Congo. Given his extensive periods in confinement however, there were some reservations about his health, yet Tuckey insisted it would improve in a warm climate. Using a purpose-built vessel, the Congo, Tuckey travelled as far as the cateracts, and then preceded overland to discover what lay beyond them. Fears for his health were well-founded. Suffering from persistent illness, he was obliged to return to the Congo and then the store ship Dorothy, which remained in the lower Congo. Tuckey died on board, reportedly from exhaustion. His journal was published unedited by the Admiralty. Hosken, p203. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Uncut in original publisher's boards, printed paper title label to spine. Light wear to covers, some sporadic foxing and toning to text. Bookplate. In a custom brown cloth clamshell box. Miller, Printer, Noble Street, Cheapside." and with errata leaf in two states. ix, [iv], 207, [1], [4, ads date 1 May 1818]. 8vo. First edition, second issue, a superb copy in original boards of the second of only three lifetime publications by Keats, comprising his longest single sustained poem, famous for its opening line: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever." So savage and malevolent were the reviews of this poem by Blackwoods and the Quarterly--"Lockhart found it exquisitely funny that an apothecary, a fellow who confessedly knew no Greek, who had to read Homer in a translation, should venture on a classic theme" (MacGillivray)--that Keats' supporters thereafter blamed the reviewers for Keats' early death. This copy has the second issue imprint to the verso of the half-title "T. Miller, Printer, Noble Street, Cheapside" and includes both states of the errata leaf (pp. xi-xii) with 5-line errata and 1-line erratum. MacGillivray A2; Ashley III:13; Tinker 1419; Hayward 232

The Cottage in the Wood; or, The Art of Becoming Rich and Happy. 2nd edn. 18mo.

Bradford: T. Inkersley. 1818 - Engr. front. after F. James, sculpted by E. Stather; sl. offsetting on titlepage. Later 19th century full crimson crushed morocco, triple ruled gilt borders, raised bands, gilt compartments & dentelles, green & brown morocco labels. Bookplate of George John Armytage. v.g. 69pp. Brontë's tale emphasises the virtues of Christian conviction and restraint, and shows that a happy and loving relationship can only be achieved when the teachings of God have been truly accepted. Mary, the heroine, steadfastly rebuts the constant approaches of the dashing Mr Bower, as she cannot reconcile her absolute faith with his religious indifference. Only when he has accepted the Gospel can their lives be shared and true happiness be attained. Mr Bower, despite losing his fortune, becomes 'rich' through spiritual enlightenment, and the familial comforts that follow. In his preamble, Brontë emphasises his commitment to presenting the truth of human existence, and advises the reader against the artifice and deception apparent in the literature of the day. He is in no doubt as to the damaging nature of the current literary trends: 'The sensual novelist and his admirer, are beings of depraved appetites and sickly imaginations, who have learnt the art of self-tormenting, are diligently and zealously employed in creating an imaginary world, which they can never inhabit . The romantic author, overstepping the bounds of probability, will freely indulge in the miraculous . transforming beggars into kings and queens, and kings and queens into beggars . extracting the most unqualified approbation, and the tenderest sympathy from the pusilanimous reader, who has never yet been wise enough to admire the language of truth .' This remains one of the Brontë family's most difficult titles: two copies are recorded on COPAC, at the BL and Leeds, and there are no records of the title at auction. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Narrative of an expedition to explore the River Zaire, usually called the Congo, in South Africa, in 1816, under the direction of Captain J.K. Tuckey, R.N. To which is added the journal of Professor Smith; some general observations on the country and its inhabitants; and an appendix: containing the natural history of that part of the kingdom of Congo through which Zaire flows.

Murray London 1818 - First edition. BECKFORD COPY WITH NOTES. 4to., lxxxii, 496pp., 2 pages ads at end, folding map, 13 engraved plates, one coloured, light toning and foxing to plates as usual, original pink boards, morocco label, light wear, an excellent copy. William Beckford's copy with 2 pages of pencil notes in manuscript at beginning, consisting of 43 lines. The first scientific expedition to the River Congo. An Irish naval officer and hydrographer, Tuckey (1776-1816) was appointed by John Barrow, then second secretary to the Admiralty, to take an expedition to the mouth of the River Congo (Zaire) to see whether it represented the outflow of the Niger into the Atlantic, and more fancifully might provide a route to the riches of the highlands of east Africa. Tuckey sailed form Deptford at the end of February 1816 aboard the Congo. The ship reached Embomma (Boma), the chief port for the river, at the beginning of August. Tuckey continued up river until he reached the cataract of Yellala at which point he had to leave the ship and travel overland with a small party of seamen, scientists, and local porters. One by one the expedition fell prey to Yellow Fever, and after a strike by the porters Tuckey was forced to retreat. The porters fled, supplies were stolen, and when Tuckey got back to the Congo he found that Yellow Fever has decimated the crew. Tuckey himself succumbed to illness and died at the beginning of October, aboard the Dorothy, the sister ship to the Congo. Of the fifty-four passengers and crew who set out, only nineteen survived - altogether a disastrous expedition. The Congo would remain unexplored until the expeditions of Stanley some sixty years later. Gay 3059. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Friend: A Series of Essays

London: Printed for Rest Fenner, 1818. Second edition. ix, [i], [ii, errata], 356 pp. 8vo. Original muslin boards, black morocco spine label. Rebacked, preserving spine. bookplate. Second edition. ix, [i], [ii, errata], 356 pp. 8vo. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title: "To Robert Jameson, in testimony of sincere and affectionate respect from S.T. Coleridge. August, 1821, Highgate." Jameson was a close childhood friend of Coleridge's eldest son, Hartly. Derwent Coleridge describes Jameson in his memoirs of his brother: "One friend he [Hartley] had, a resident in the town, though not a schoolfellow, Robert Jameson, to whom he afterwards addressed a series of beautiful sonnets; but with this exception he had, strictly speaking, no mates, and formed no friendships." At the time of this inscription, Hartley was staying with Jameson, now a lawyer, and he wrote three sonnets to his friend, his first attempts in the form. He prefaced the sonnets "To a Friend," which were published in his 1833 Poems, with a note identifying Jameson as "the favorite companion of my boyhood, the active friend and sincere counselor of my youth." In 1828 Jameson, with James Gillman, edited the 3-volume 1828 Pickering edition of Coleridge's Poems. Wise, Coleridge 22. Provenance: Robert Jameson (presentation from the author)

Sherwood,Neely and Co, London 1818 - Sherwood and Co 3 Volumes London 1818,1823 and 1821 Pierce Egan (1772-1849) Handsome Three Volume Set in Half Brown Calf Over marbled boards, new endpapers.Quite a hard set bibliographically to pin down, but Egan produced 3 volumes published by Sherwood,Neely and Co the first two in 1818 and the third in 1821,so our Volume 1 is a slightly later 1823 Issue, with Cribb as frontispiece plate, volume II is dated 1818 and I believe that this is the First Edition by Sherwood. Our Volume III is undated but would appear to be the 1821 Edition Published By Sherwood, although no publisher appears to the title page and neither does any date, although no date within the book is after 1821.Sherwood also published a Fourth Volume in 1824.This set comes with five raised bands to spines with gilt lettering to the 2nd,3rd and 4th compartments along spine.New Endpapers inserted.Lovely clean bindings.Internally Volume I has some evidence of water staining to certain pages and with some external foxing present to the pages, there are a few small annotations in pen to the page margins on a few pages, namely to index page 492 and page 392.and page 163 with added note.small chip to page 239/240 approx 1'' in size.,one or two super folding plates of Broughton v Slack and Humphries and Mendoza.Volume II is a lot cleaner and there are no previous annotations, there is some sporadic foxing with rear of plates mostly affected and some thumbing marks to page margins and an odd ink spot is in evidence.Volume III is in similar condition to Vol II with some sporadic foxing spots, with additional pencil line marks within page margins (can easily be erased) and the numerous b&w plates are in good order. The page edges are Marbled on this volume unlike Vols 1&2.There are NO previous names or inscriptions to any of the volumes.Volume Three is dedicated to the Marquess of Worcester.Tom Spring is featured as B&W frontis to vol III,and Cribb to Volume I and in place on Vol 1 is the original Smeeton Engraved Title Page. It's an attractive set for the collector and of course it is an impossible task to describe every single flaw or slight blemish. We have graded the set Good to Very Good, and if any more pictures are required do let us know.We aim to describe books as accurately as we can in order to avoid any buyer disappointment, but you need to satisfy yourself that the condition is acceptable to you and apologies if we are not able to cover every single small tear,or internal marking.just noticed that in Volume I there is small newspaper article from the Times dated 1836 tipped in on page 145 opposite the plate of Henry Pearce and Mendoza and the article features Mendoza. There are we have noticed a few small tape repairs to Volume I final page of index has 3 repairs made. There is no binder's ticket but would suggest that the books have been bound up in the last 20 years no later.Highly sought after by collectors,Vol 1 (viii) 497pp,Vol II (viii) 574pp plus one advertisement leaf and Volume III 588pp with one erased code mark to the title page noted.Heavy set Boxiana : is the title given to a series of volumes of prize-fighting articles written by the English sportswriter and journalist Pierce Egan, and part-published by George Smeeton in the 1810s,later on By Virtue (London) Egan wrote magazine articles about the bareknuckle forerunner of boxing which at that time was conducted under special rules and was mostly outlawed in England.A devoted follower of boxing, Egan called it "The Sweet Science of Bruising." The first volume was published in 1813 a further 5 more volumes followed, in 1818, 1821, 1824, 1828, and 1829.A seminal work on the History of this Noble Art NB: We have just acquired a wonderful collection of 1500 Rare and Desirable Boxing Books,Boxing Programmes and Boxing Ephemera. It was a lifetime's collection from a Private Gentleman with many significant highlights. Please contact us by e-mail or phone as we may have in stock just what you are looking for [Attributes: Hard Cover]
