Paris, marchands de nouveautés, 1814, 50 pp. Davois I, 195. - II. III. Les Troglodites modernes. Paris, Goujon, Delaunay, 1814, 30 pp. IV. PICHON (L.-A.) The narrative of Robert Adams, a sailor, who was wrecked on the Western coast of Africa in the year 1810, was detained three years in slavery by the Arabs of the Great Desert, and resided several months in the city of Timbuctoo.

London John Murray 1816 - 4to. [1],xi-xxi,[1],xxxiii-xxxiv,[6],6-231,[1]p. With large folding map as frontispiece. Later half calf gilt by Winstanley of Manchester, morocco lettering piece, a fine example Robert Adams was an American seaman, the son of a New York sail maker and an Afro-American mother. His real name was Benjamin Rose. Having set sail from New York he was taken prisoner after the wreck of his ship, the Charles. He was fortunate to survive his experiences as a slave, but after three years the British consul at Mogador, Joseph Dupuis, managed (via an agent) to buy back Rose from his then owners and sent him on to the American consul-general at Tangier. Supposed to have travelled back to America from Cadiz, Rose somehow contrived to miss the boat and took ship instead with a British vessel bound for Liverpool. Discharged in Wales as being too sick to work, he managed to beg his way to London and though he was by this time using the name of Adams - perhaps because America would have regarded him as a deserter after all the efforts made to secure his release. He roamed the streets of London like other homeless destitute sailors until he was recognised by someone he had met in Cadiz and taken to the offices of the company of Merchants Trading to Africa. It was there that he related his Narrative to a Mr. Cock, after which the company paid for his passage back to America and his family. Since Adams was unable either to read or write, his narrative was taken down from interrogation. This book was the first to describe Timbuktu as a dull squalid place, boasting none of the glories of old, and this led many to disbelieve his story - though some of those who poured scorn on the book may have had a vested interest in the notion that the legendary West African city was still a thriving metropolis. This book was the first to describe Timbuktu as a dull squalid place, boasting none of the glories of old, and this led many to disbelieve his story - though some of those who poured scorn on the book may have had a vested interest in the notion that the legendary West African city was still a thriving metropolis. See Howgego Encyclopaedia of Exploration. Beckford refers to five sections of the book; in all 20 lines of notes. The appearance of the King and Queen of Timbuctoo attract his attention: "The Queen called Fatima was extremely fat - wore no shoes and in consequence her feet appeared to be as hard and dry as the hoofs of an ass." A weird animal the Corocco is described: "Resembling a very large Dog - but having an opening or hollow in its back like a pocket in which it puts its prey. - It mounts trees with agility to gathers cocoa nuts, devours Goats and young Children and utters a cry very like an Owl - The Negroes, no wonder, are greatly afraid of it. - " The appearance of the Negro slaves is noticed: Adams once saw amongst some slaves at Tombutoo a woman who had her teeth filed round, he supposes by way of ornament: and as they were very long, "they resembled Crow quills."          Log of the Ship Trumbull, Java Head to Providence, RI, 1816

Folio. unpaginated. About 80 pagespre-printed in journal form, accomplished in manuscript. "John Aborn Master. Kept by Geo. W. Johnson of Providence." The Trumbull departed Jave head May 29 and reached Providence October 26, 1816. Excellent detail on ship handling, weather, and events on board - which included such things as the discovery of a giant whale carcass, being fed on by birds and sharks, "a most tremendous squall" off the Cape of Good Hope, after which "all persons on board [the ship carried passengers as well as cargo] were obliged to help cut away the mizzen mast." Also contacts with English troop ships on the heels of the late War. Approaching the Cape of Good Hope they ran low on water, and the captain was confined to his quarters by rheumatism, much to the relief of the crew. According to journal keeper Johnson, the ship was being run by "our officers." In all, an eventful voyage of an early 19th century American merchantman. Bound in original marbled wrappers, taped at spine. "Providence (R.I.) Printed for William Wilkinson, and sold at his bookstore, 1815."

Mehrere Tafeln verbunden, meist an topographische Parallelstellen. Brunet III, 714. Vicaire IV, 749. Graesse IV, 58. Trier in Frankreich - Napoleon in Trier.

Paris 1816 - Three volumes, small and large quarto; the two-volume text with portrait frontispiece and two folding tables; the two-part large quarto atlas (bound in one volume) containing 40 plates (23 coloured and two folding) and 14 maps (two double-page and folding); French half maroon roan and contemporary glazed boards. The official account of the important Baudin voyage to Australia and the Pacific, including a wonderful series of images of people and places, among them a famous suite of portraits of Australian Aborigines, and including among its maps the earliest published complete map of Australia. The well-equipped Baudin expedition was one of the great French voyages of discovery, and made significant visits to Western Australia, Tasmania and Sydney. The coastal explorations are commemorated by numerous place-names along the Australian coast.Baudin's voyage, commissioned by Napoleon, was, like that of Flinders, intended to make a detailed examination of the Australian continent. The contemporaneous French and English voyages crossed paths in their explorations, famously meeting at Encounter Bay in South Australia in 1802. Despite their spirit of co-operation, it would ironically be the French action in holding Flinders prisoner on Mauritius for six years that delayed publication of Flinders' map of the continent and allowed the French to publish the first such complete and detailed chart. Sometimes said to have been at least partly based on Flinders' charts and papers seized by the French, this is one of the most beautiful, as well as one of the most famous of all maps of Australia. Baudin himself died in the course of the voyage, and the narrative of the expedition begun by Péron, the expedition's naturalist, was completed by Louis de Freycinet after Péron's death. Freycinet's brother Henri was responsible for much of the mapping. Louis de Freycinet would go on to command his own famous expedition some fifteen years later. The exceptional illustrations are mostly by the remarkable artists Petit and Lesueur: "Lesueur's scientific work runs parallel to artistic work of great importance. He was at one and the same time draughtsman and painter, naturalist and landscape artist. His talent was recognised in France in his own lifetime, by the award? of the silver medal of the Société des Beaux-Arts?" (Baudin in Australian Waters, p. 26). As well as the detailed imagery and scientific record, the expedition brought back some 100,000 natural history specimens (as against around 4000 collected by the Flinders voyage). Numerous live animals and plants were collected for Josephine's celebrated estate at Malmaison, and the vignette on the title-page of the book shows emus, black swans and kangaroos under gum trees in the Empress' garden.A section on the hydrography of the voyage, separately published and actually distributed by a different bookseller, is sometimes added to this narrative to form a larger set. However the format offered here is how the publication is normally seen with two volumes of text and two parts of the atlas, often referred to as the "general reader's set" Slight worming affecting margins of five leaves, a few odd spots or stains, but generally an excellent set, neatly rebacked to period style.          View of the Fair Merchant Yard from East and View of the Fair Cathedral from South.

mid. XIX c. - Pair of engravings (app. 21.5 by 29 cm), contemporary hand colour. The history of the fair in Nizhniy Novgorod spans more than five centuries. From the mid-XVI century it was known as Makaryev Fair and was held annually near Makaryev Monastery in the Nizhniy Novgorod region. Following the destruction of the fair by fire in 1816 it was moved to the Nizhniy Novgorod city. Famous French architect Auguste de Montferrand, best known for constructing St. Isaac's Cathedral and Alexander's Column in Saint Petersburg, was entrusted with designing a fair complex and a cathedral that later became known as Staroyarmarochny. The project was completed in 1822. Gradually, the groundwater eroded the artificial ground on which the cathedral stood and caused numerous cracks in its walls. It was restored by the architect Robert Kileveyn and re-consecrated in 1888. The bell tower standing next to the cathedral was also replaced by a new one constructed in the same design. The fair itself played a major role in the Russian trade and by the mid-XIX century it became a centre of the commerce of the Empire, where merchants would sell up to half of the total production exported outside Russia. It attracted many foreign merchants from India, Iran, and Central Asia making it a place where the East met the West. As a result of the economic instability in Russia in the beginning of XX century the fair business started to stagnate, which eventually led to the closure of the Nizhniy Novgorod Fair in 1929. Nowadays, Spassky Cathedral belongs to one of the few surviving original fair buildings, until the XXI century.
