View of Sydney in New South Wales (Taken from Bell Mount)

James Whittle & Richard Holmes Laurie, London 1814 - Engraving on paper, 290 x 430 mm; a good, well-inked impression. A lovely, early Sydney view: the city and Harbour is shown from the Bellevue Hill and Vaucluse area, looking westward. This fine engraving was published by Laurie and Whittle, well-known London publishers of maps and charts. In 1814 they prepared a 'Catalogue of Perspective Views Coloured for the Shew Glass or Diagonal Mirror'. This catalogue comprised topographical views from around the world and included just three engravings of the new settlement in New South Wales - this and one other of Sydney and one of Parramatta. All three prints were based on original watercolours prepared by John Eyre.Eyre originally prepared a drawing of this view for the colonial entrepreneur Absalom West, who published a series of engravings of the colony in 1813-14. In all West issued 24 views, of which 14 were after drawings by Eyre. John Eyre had arrived in the colony as a convict in 1801; following his pardon in 1804 he received various artistic commissions from Governors King, Bligh and Macquarie. However it is for the views of the east and west sides of Sydney Cove which were published as aquatints in David Mann's The Present Picture of New South Wales (1811), that Eyre is best known. Some light discolouration but generally fine.

Nashville, 1814. Broadsheet, approximately 17 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches, printed in five columns. Previously folded. A few small separations and chips along old folds, lower right corner chipped, slightly affecting text. Tanning and dust soiling. Good. A significant and very scarce copy of an early Tennessee newspaper, announcing the death of Tennessee founding father James Robertson. "He has been variously described as the 'Father of Tennessee,' the 'Father of Middle Tennessee,' and the 'Founder of Nashville'....By 1771 [his] family had crossed the Blue Ridge mountains. They settled in the vicinity of Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga River, not far from present-day Johnson City, and Robertson immediately became active in the development of the first major settlement in what later became the state of Tennessee....After nearly a decade on the Watauga, Robertson migrated 200 miles westward to establish a settlement on the Cumberland River. He had explored the area as early as 1778, and in the spring of 1779 he returned to plant a crop of corn and establish the nucleus of 'Fort Nashborough'" - ANB. The paper, printed with black mourning borders, laments the loss of the Tennessee pioneer, and devotes four of the five columns on the recto to an account of his accomplishments. "The important & long faithful services of the deceased; the sacrifices he made of time and health, to promote our prosperity, require that we should not omit a tribute of respect to his memory at this distressing moment." The remaining space is devoted to news of developments in the War of 1812 and bulletins from abroad, and includes several advertisements and want notices. Chronicling America locates only one copy of this issue, at the Library of Congress.

Philadelphia: Published by M. Carey, 1814. 3 preliminary leaves and 58 sheets of maps (50 double-page). Maps outlined in color. Tall folio. Antique style half calf and marbled boards. Titlepage with significant repaired damage, about 20% in upper fore-edge corner supplied in facsimile. Two preliminary text leaves also with paper repairs. The maps all pristine, with original outline color, and very fine. Except for the text leaves, a beautiful copy of this important early American atlas. This is one of the earliest American atlases published in the United States. The first American atlas was issued in 1795, and was also published by Carey. That atlas contained only 21 maps, so the present 1814 atlas, with 58 maps, is much improved and expanded from the original effort. Most of the atlas is devoted to the United States and its territories, and incorporates the latest geographical knowledge available, by what was then one of the premier mapping firms in the United States. There are maps of virtually every state, including the North-Western, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana Territories. The western maps are particularly detailed, incorporating geographic information from recent explorations. The map of the whole North American continent and the excellent large detailed map of the United States and territories can lay claim to being the best available to that time. The other maps are of the West Indies, South America, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and one of "Captain Cook's Discoveries" showing a large part of the North Pacific and as far south as the Hawaiian Islands. Wheat points out that the map of Missouri Territory was influenced by the recent explorations of Lewis and Clark: "Lewis and Clark influence is apparent on the Upper Missouri and also along the Columbia. Missouri Territory extends west to the Pacific Coast, its probable northern and southern boundaries being shown by colored dotted lines. The northern line runs easterly from Mt. Ranier and includes most of the Columbia watershed, thence north of the Missouri drainage and including that of the Assiniboin (with its large lake), thence east to Lake of the Woods and south to the head of the Mississippi, which then forms the eastern boundary. The southern line leaves the coast just north of F.S. Francisco (whose Bay is not shown), thence easterly and slightly north of the headwaters of the Rio Grande, following south along the ridge east of that stream, southeast to the head of the Colorado (of Texas) and down that stream to the Gulf of Mexico at St. Bernardo B. The Stat of Louisiana (admitted 1812) appears near the mouth of the Mississippi." PHILLIPS ATLASES 722. STREETER SALE 82. WHEAT TRANSMISSISSIPPI WEST 315.

The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry

, 1814. 1814. WATTS, William. The Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, in a Collection of the most interesting & Picturesque Views. Engraved title-page and 84 plates, each with a leaf of descriptive text in letterpress, 1 f. ("Alphabetical Index"). Oblong 4to., 210 x 265 mm, bound in contemporary English red morocco, board edges gilt, spine gilt, a.e.g. London: John & Josiah Boydell, [ca. 1814].The delicate engravings in Watts's famous work, Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, offer present-day viewers a record of English stately homes and the late-eighteenth-century gardens that surrounded them. The engravings were executed by Watts after his own designs, as well as those of Inigo Jones and others. John Harris has shown that these views offer valuable contemporary evidence of the architecture and gardens of each estate. Among the famous homes are: two views of Chiswick House, Middlesex, the seat of the Duke of Devonshire, another of Chatsworth in Derbyshire with modifications by Lancelot "Capability" Brown; Burghley House in Northamptonshire, the seat of the Earl of Exeter, with alterations by "Capability" Brown; Wilton House, the seat of the Earl of Pembroke; Alnwick Castle, the seat of the Duke of Northumberland; Charlton House in Wiltshire, the seat of the Earl of Suffolk, which was designed by Inigo Jones; and many others. William Watts (1752-1851) obtained his art education from such noted artists as Paul Sandby and Edward Rooker. His Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, which was originally issued serially in the years 1779-1786, is his best known work. Also a popular work, it was reprinted throughout the beginning of the nineteenth century, this copy with paper watermarked 1814. This copy with a contemporanious manuscipt index laid in. Joints professionally repaired, some minor foxing, overall a near fine copy. John Harris, The Artist and the Country House, pp. 156, 258, 261, 282. Bryan V, 347. Bénézit X, 656. Ian Mackenzie, British Prints, p. 342 (recording 80 plates only).

The final leaf has been supplied in coloured facsimile and the lower cover neatly replaced at some time by a pink cover of the same period and weight. Each leaf has a large very nicely hand coloured copper engraving with an 8 line verse below telling the story. Jerry and Kitty court, get married and have a baby, then they tire of each other and decide to go travelling. Leaf 15 shows them on a boat and Jerry pushing his wife overboard to drown. This was probably considered not quite suitable for children by some parents, who thoughtfully removed and destroyed the leaf, although no doubt most children would have enjoyed the grim ending to the tale. Spine missing, label lightly browned, early name and date on upper cover, some early writing on inside of cover and blank side of title page (title is on verso of first leaf), last line of verse on page 4 is trimmed off, contents clean and bright. A defective copy of an uncommon pretty hand coloured juvenile book (1 leaf in facsimile, lower cover replaced as noted). Moon No. 169; Osborne Volume I, page 58. Strutt, for whom the title Baron Belper was created in 1856, was a first-year student at York at the time. He later became a liberal politician and served as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. "Craig's Elements combines Godwin and Adam Smith, making the impartial spectator as anarchist the theoretical foundation for a comprehensive text-book in the political sciences. It may have been intended for the new professional course which the Professor of Logic, George Jardine, wanted introduced at the Scottish universities... Craig's work was immediately translated into German (Leipzig, 1816) in support of the old-liberal, anti-revolutionary cause" (Haakonssen, p. 156).
