         Sense and Sensibility

London: T. Egerton, 1811. 3 vols. 1st edition, whispering in a voice quieter than decency, that the days that make us happy are the days that set us free. 19th century 3/4 morocco. A fine set, cleaner than fresh air, and it's a complete one too with all 3 genuine half-titles, and though this 1st edition is regularly stalked by all collectors, it has a history of amplified appeal to those who are women, so heed this ladies: Buying a 1st edition of Sense and Sensibility without authentic half-titles is more dangerous than open-knife night at the blow fish bar, and more naïve than sexting your face and your kitty in the same picture. Ex-3 significant women collectors (bookplates) of élan who deserve snaps, Dorothy Stewart, Pamela Kingzett, and Sarah Peter, the last named of the 3, a modern goddess who gathered her 1st editions of fiction in English by women, 1 book at a time, and now stands tall with the greatest collection of them ever assembled. By anyone. Anywhere. Austen invented modern romantic comedy beginning with Sense and Sensibility, and started schooling 7 generations of readers about the intricate convolutions of affection. What they learned from it right away is that all tests of love end badly, that excitement and familiarity are hard to find in one person, that the first duty of love is to listen, and that when the heart speaks, the mind should know it's tacky to object. In the 20th century they came to understand that the only real proof of love is trust, that sometimes there are more differences within the genders than between them, that love must be transformed from the flame at first into the light that lasts, and that all men fall somewhere between apes and gods, and the best a wise woman can hope to do, is pick one that's traveling in the right direction. Now we're in the 21st century and a new generation of readers just balance Austen's charm against the realities of daily life, appreciating that "desperate" is not a sexual preference, that the fastest way to improve a relationship is to see love as a verb rather than a feeling, and that a woman can find a blunt equality with men by going to therapy, where she can talk about herself for an hour, just like a guy on a date. fine.

La Guerre de l'an 1809 entre l'Autriche et la France. Par un officier autrichien. Avec cartes et plans. Tome I, première partie [seule parue].

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

         History of the Quakers - 2 Vols-William Wilberforce's Bookplate-his personal cpy

      - The History of the Rise, Increase, and Progress of the Christian People Called Quakers, 2 volumes. Author is William Sewel in the year 1811. Fifth Edition and published by William Phillips in London. Inscriptions: Rev. Robert I. Wilberforce bookplate in Volume 1, pasted over William Wilberforce's bookplate. William Wilberforce's bookplate can still be partially seen through Robert's, but it is William's alone which is inside the front cover of Volume 2. Bibliography of William Wilberforce: Wilberforce, English philanthropist and antislavery crusader, entered Parliament in 1870. He became a strong supporter of William Pitt who persuaded Wilberforce to devote himself to the abolition of the slave trade. Wilberforce was converted to Christianity at age 25, and as a member of the Clapham sect he used his wealth and influence in Christian outreach. Wilberforce also supported Christian mission work, fought to improve the condition of the poor and prisoners, supported Catholic emancipation, and in 1804 helped to form the British and Foreign Bible Society. Bibliography of Robert Wilberforce: Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802-1857) was an English clergyman and writer, second son of abolitionist William Wilberforce, and active in the Oxford Movement. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, taking a double first in 1823. IN 1826 he was chosen fellow of Oriel and was ordained, among his friends and colleagues being Newman, Pusey and Keble, tutoring at the college for a few years until religious differences with the provost caused him to resign an leave Oxford for Kent and Hull. Appointed archdeacon of the East Riding of Yorkshire in 1841, he soon became good friend with Henry Manning, with whom he corresponded on religious and theological matters, resulting in both of them turning to the Roman Catholic church, Wilberforce doing so a short three years before his death, when he was buried in Rome at the Baslica of Santa Maria. R.I. Wilberforce assisted his brother, Bishop of Oxford Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873) to write the Life and to edit the Correspondence of his father. Includes dedication to King George and Preface with 2 volumes of textual history and what appears to be reprinted correspondence regarding Quakers. Volume 2 was rebound which is why the 2 bindings are so different. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dieterich 1811, 1813, 1816, 1820, 1828, Göttingen - First editions, journal issues, of thirteen important papers by Gauss, including works on the fundamental theorem of algebra, number theory, hypergeometric functions, approximation theory, differential geometry, gravitation, and celestial mechanics. ?Gauss ranks, together with Archimedes and Newton, as one of the greatest geniuses in the history of mathematics? (Printing & the Mind of Man, p. 155). ?In his first years at Göttingen, Gauss experienced a second upsurge of ideas and publications in various fields of mathematics. Among the latter were several notable papers inspired by his work on the tiny planet Pallas, perturbed by Jupiter [including Disquisitio de elementis ellipticis palladis]; Disquisitlones generates circa seriem infinitam, an early rigorous treatment of series and the introduction of the hypergeometric functions, ancestors of the ?special functions? of physics; Methodus nova integralium valores per approximationem invenlendi, an important contribution to approximate integration; ? and Determinatio attractionis quam in punctum quodvis positionis datae exerceret planeta si eius massa per totam orbitam ratione temporis quo singulae partes describuntur uniformiter esset dispertita, which showed that the perturbation caused by a planet is the same as that of an equal mass distributed along its orbit in proportion to the time spent on an arc. At the same time Gauss continued thinking about unsolved mathematical problems ? By 1817 Gauss was ready to move toward geodesy ? the period of preoccupation with geodesy was in fact one of the most scientifically creative of Gauss?s long career. Already in 1813 geodesic problems had inspired his Theoria attractionis corporum sphaeroidicorum ellipticorum homogeneorum methodus nova tractata, a significant early work on potential theory ? Surveying problems also motivated Gauss to develop his ideas on least squares and more general problems of what is now called mathematical statistics. The result was the definitive exposition of his mature ideas in the Theoria combinationis obseruationum erroribus minimis obnoxiae (with supplement) [only the supplement present in the offered volumes] ? However, the crowning contribution of the period, and his last breakthrough in a major new direction of mathematical research, was Disquisitiones generates circa superficies curvas, which grew out of his geodesic meditations of three decades and was the seed of more than a century of work on differential geometry? (DSB).Gauss?s first great work was his doctoral thesis, Demonstratio Nova Theorematis Omnem Functionem Algebraicam Rationalem Integram unius Variabilis in Factores Reales Primi vel Secundi Gradus resolvi posse (1799), in which he gave the first rigorous proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra. This theorem, which states that every algebraic equation in one unknown has a root, was stated by Albert Girard, Descartes, Newton, and Maclaurin. Attempts at a proof were made by d?Alembert, Euler, and Lagrange, but Gauss was the first to furnish a rigorous demonstration. However, Gauss?s proof of 1799, which used geometric notions, was itself not completely rigorous (its gaps were not completely filled until 1920), and Gauss himself was not satisfied with it. In 1816 he published two further proofs, Demonstratio nova altera theorematis omnem functionem algebraicam rationalem integram unius variabilis in factores reales primi vel secundi gradus resolvi posse and Theorematis de resolubilitate functionum algebraicarum integrarum in factores reales demonstratio tertia. The first of these is almost strictly algebraic, but it is not really complete as it presupposes that every real equation of odd degree has a real root and that every quadratic equation with complex coefficients has two complex roots. The third proof is easier but uses calculus. Two of the papers in these volumes deal with analysis (i.e., calculus). Disquisitlones generales circa seriem ?has several claims to fame: it considers x

         MS] Navigation 1811.

Great Britain 1811. - Folio sized manuscript titled and dated to the front cover with the name W. Emmett (?). 160pp. Stitching mostly gone, page block still firmly held within its case but detached. Wear to extremities of covers with some loss to corners. Internally clean, and in fact internally very striking, the penmanship and degree of decorative detail are quite delightful. Later gift inscription to first page of MS. Page edges untrimmed. Possibly a hand written reference workbook, possibly a series of navigational studies and solutions, possibly a text book; the manuscript is extraordinarily detailed and decorative with meticulous tables, diagrams and illustrations including a detailed manuscript globe of the Earth and a full page mariner's compass rose. The text deals with, amongst a wealth of navigational subjects, log boards, Middle latitude Sailing, Navigational Trigonometry, Geographical Zones, general axioms of navigation and a particularly in depth 20 page account of a voyage taken by the Frances out of London in 1805 to Funchal in Madeira. There was indeed a ship called the Frances sailing in 1805, a privately owned small ship on loan to the Royal Navy, possibly the same HMS Frances that took part in the American Revolutionary War, which appears to have been rented (apparently a common event in times of conflict) from the Earl of Huntingdon and to have been named after his wife, Frances Hastings. The other possibility is that the account of the voyage is being used as an exemplary problem and solution and thus might be composed of elements chosen at random. A fascinating survival of a period during which British domination of the seas was without question and when knowledge of this sort was the passport to a potentially valuable career. Engraving by Ferdinando Mori (platemark 305 × 200 mm) The works reproduced by the Riepenhausen brothers are a baptismal font commissioned by Charlotte Schimmelmann for the church of Brahetrolleborg, Funen, Denmark (1805-1807; plates 11-14), a relief of 'The Dance of the Muses on Helicon' modelled by Thorvaldsen in nine days as a birthday present for Jacqueline Elisabeth Schubart (1804; pl. 15), four reliefs for the façade of Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen (1807-1810; pls. 18-21), a relief of 'Hector with Paris and Helen' (1809; pl. 23), and another of 'Cupid revives Psyche' (1810; pl. 31). Ferdinando Mori reproduced all the other works, among them the celebrated Alexander frieze for the Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome, Thorvaldsen's first commission for the Napoleonic dynasty (1812; pls. 33-54); a statue of Mars, commissioned by the Bavarian crown prince Ludwig, for which the model has been lost (1808; pl. 32); 3 the tripartite funeral monuments for August Boehmer (pls. 67-69) and J. Ph. Bethmann-Hollweg (pls.71-73), executed in 1812 and 1814 respectively; and the portrait of Elisabeth Ostermann-Tolstoi modelled in 1815, and sculpted in 1815-1819 (pl. 77). Seven of Mori's preparatory drawings for the plates of the Alexander reliefs are preserved in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen (Inv. D175-181, associated with pls. 33-37, 40, 43, 49-50), as well as his pencil drawing of Mars (D174), and drawings for twenty-three other plates. 4 The publication evidently was instigated in 1809 by Joseph Anton Koch, who planned to draw and engrave the sculptures himself, but soon transferred the project to the Riepenhausen brothers and Ferdinando Mori. Initially, all the costs were borne by Thorvaldsen, and the work first distributed in 1811 as a suite of title and twenty-one plates. 5 In 1813 Mori assumed the publication rights, 6 and the work grew in three stages (to 32, 7 54, 8 and 67 9 plates respectively) until in 1816 it reached its optimum size of eighty engravings. 10 In each of these successive issues, the same title-plate (dated 1811) was utilised.         A Narrative of the Most Remarkable Particulars in the Life of James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, an African Prince, As Related by Himself

Leeds: Printed by Davies and Booth, 1811. Good. First Leeds edition. Preface by Reverend Walter Shirley. 12mo. 32pp. Self-wrappers. Removed from a bound volume. First leaf soiled and smudged, chips on the edges of two leaves affecting no text, small tears, a good only copy. Originally published at Bath in 1772 and at subsequent other locations and editions, this was the first slave narrative published in the English langauge. Gronniosaw (also known as James Albert) was probably from Bornu (now in northeastern Nigeria). He was captured and sold to a minister in New York. After the minister died he enlisted as a cook with a privateer, and later as a soldier in the British army, until he finally settled in England. He died in 1775. Uncommon edition of this slave narrative.
