[Attributes: First Edition]

AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY; OR, THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE BIRDS OF THE UNITED STATES

Bradford and Inskeep; Samuel F. Bradford 1808-14; 1824, Philadelphia - 353 x 270 mm. (14 x 10 5/8"). Nine volumes. FIRST EDITION of volumes I-VI and IX (with Sabin's First Issue points for volume I); volumes VII-VIII from the reissue of 1824. 19th century red straight-grain morocco, gilt and blind-tooled borders, raised bands, compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles. WITH 76 FINE HAND-COLORED PLATES AFTER ILLUSTRATIONS BY THE AUTHOR. Title page and a few other leaves with small embossed stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum (in Cyrillic), Vol. I with the bookplate of Herbert McLean Evans on pastedown, some evidence of removed bookplates or labels in a few volumes. Fine Bird Books, pp. 155-57; Anker, pp. 211-12; Zimmer, pp. 679-81; Bennett, p. 114; Reese 3; Sabin 104596 & 104597. Edges and corners a bit rubbed, spines slightly sunned, some faint scratches and a few minor stains on the boards, but THE ORIGINAL UNRESTORED BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED AND ALTOGETHER ATTRACTIVE. Some minor offsetting from the plates, a touch of soiling to title page of volume I and plates 23 and 24 in volume III, about half the pages in volume VI noticeably foxed and toned (as in all copies we could trace, because of different paper stock used), but the other volumes IN UNUSUALLY FINE, BRIGHT, CLEAN CONDITION INTERNALLY, AND ALL OF THE PLATES (even those in the sixth volume) CLEAN, SMOOTH, AND PLEASING. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. Although a few books on American ornithology were published in Europe prior to the present work, this set was far superior both in artistry and in the quality of the scientific information it contained. It was also enormously influential to generations of ornithologists that came after Wilson. Serendipitously, as DNB tells us, Wilson (1766-1813) actually met Audubon on a trip in 1810, during which the author gathered sketches of new birds and advertised the volumes he had already published. Although Audubon lacked the funds to purchase a set, "seeing what Wilson was achieving inspired [him] to publish his own illustrations after Wilson's death." We may hardly wonder at the young Audubon's amazement; according to Bennett, this was "the first truly outstanding American color plate book of any type" and is "absolutely basic as a collectors' item, [while being] somewhat unjustly overshadowed by the enormous and more beautiful Audubon giant folios, actually printed in Great Britain." Volumes I-VII were all published during the author's lifetime, while Volumes VIII-IX were issued after his death by his friend and editor George Ord (who wrote the text for the final volume, though using Wilson's original plates). Ord (1781-1866) later reissued Volumes VII-VIII in 1824 with revised nomenclature and other changes to the text. Our copy contains these two reissued volumes, along with the first editions of the others. (Apparently this make-up is not uncommon--Zimmer notes the same composition in the Newberry's copy.) Our set has a distinguished provenance, containing the stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum, once a great palace constructed by Catherine the Great for her eldest son. The more recent bookplate belongs to the noted embryologist Herbert McLean Evans (1882-1971), whose vast collection of books related to science and medicine went mainly to the Harry Ransom Center. This work is almost always found with significant browning and foxing; in our set, only Volume VI contains such condition issues (as is virtually always the case), while the remaining volumes are remarkably well preserved. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds, the first scientific work with color plates published in America, and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. He was noted for his inspirational leadership and superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his several victories, the best known and most notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, during which he was shot and killed……Nelson’s death at Trafalgar secured his position as one of Britain’s most heroic figures. Numerous monuments, including Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, London, have been created in his memory and his legacy remains highly influential. – Wikip.

Narrative of the Expedition To The Baltic: With An Account of the Siege and Capitulation of Copenhagen; including the Surrender of the Danish Fleet. By an Officer employed in the Expedition.

London, Brettell for Lindsell, 1808. 8vo. Entirely uncut in the publisher's paper-backed boards with ms. title lable to spine; pp. xi, 307, two hand-coloured engraved maps; re-backed at an early state, head of spine defective, boards a little spotted, remnants of bookplate, a little offsetting from maps, even light toning to text; a good copy of a great rarity. First edition, privately published. Dedicated to William Shaw Cathcart, the military leader of the operations against Copenhagen and Danish forces, this anonymous account was 'written principally to beguile those solitary hours which fall to the lot of most military men, and to preserve a private memorial of the events which occurred during the operations in Zeeland, without any view to publication' (author's Advertisement). Besides being a blow-by-blow account of the Baltic operations, this volume contains valuable descriptions of the reaction of the population of Copenhagen to British occupation. 'In the summer of 1807 it became clear to Lord Castlereagh that the French might commandeer the Danish fleet stationed in Copenhagen. To prevent this, Castlereagh sent Admiral Gambier and Cathcart to take control of the fleet and the city. The British arrived at the end of August and immediately tried to negotiate a surrender with Major-General Peiman, the commander of Copenhagen's military forces. This proved ineffectual and by 1 September they had placed mortar and gun batteries around the city and had blockaded Stralsund, the nearest Danish port capable of assisting Copenhagen. Having strengthened their position, Gambier and Cathcart once again asked Peiman to surrender the city and the fleet. He refused and emphasized his resolution by not allowing the women and children to leave the city. The British batteries began to shell Copenhagen on 2 September. This pounding continued until 6 September and articles of surrender were signed on the next day. The British forces then took control of the citadel and arsenal and began to repair the naval vessels that the Danish had tried to scuttle ... Although his Copenhagen victory had enabled the British army to impound naval supplies and vessels, the British public remained divided in its opinion of the episode. Opponents of the attack were especially appalled by the number of women and children who died in the siege.' (ODNB on Cathcart). This controvery explains why there are no immediate publications about the 1807 siege, and why this book is so rare and was published privately. The only copy in COPAC is the one in the British Library; KVK locates one further copy, in the Danish Royal Library, with only one map.

S. 218). - "As a military strategist, historians compare him to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, conservative, cautious, and competent. Charles was a study in contrasts. As a practitioner, he was flawless in executing complex and risky maneuvers of troops in the heat of battle, achieving brilliant victories in the face of almost certain defeat. Yet, as a theoretician, his devotion to ground and caution led his contemporary, Carl von Clausewitz, to criticize his rigidity and adherence to geographic strategy. Regardless, he remains among Austria`s pantheon of heroes of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars" (Wikipedia Abruf vom 02.05.2017).

Delance, Paris 1808 - Folio, a fine complete copy, collates as: title-page with engraved vignette, engraved title-page, 122 plates depicting gardens and chateaux (of which 58 full-page, 60 half-page, and 4 quarter-page), together with an additional 3 maps (of Malmaison, Ermenonville and the country around Paris), 8 quarter-page engravings on 2 plates in the Repton style with intact overlays, and one plate with 21 small technical figures; in contemporary red half morocco. One of the first works on contemporary landscape architecture for gardens and a highly influential work on French eighteenth-century garden and landscape design. Published at the height of Napoleon's First French Empire, Laborde's work is of central importance to the history of Malmaison, and provides the best contemporary overview of the house and its extensive grounds, marking it out as a companion to the more famous botanical works of Ventenat and Bonpland: "Rien n'a été négligé pour y rassembler tout ce qui peut servir à l'étude de la Botanique."The introduction discusses the history of gardening, with a discourse on the Greeks and Romans, the creation of scientific gardens, Montaigne, Louis XIV and Versailles, and the rise of modern natural history: it is as good a mission statement for Enlightenment botany as one could find. Although Laborde is at pains to distinguish the new chateaux from those of the Ancien Régime - at one point launching a rather telling attack on the old taste for chinoiserie, for example - the grandeur of these Napoleonic era houses is noteworthy. The main part of the book is divided into sections which study actual gardens. In this section the main French text appears in simultaneous German and English translation (the latter a quite remarkable innovation for a work of this date). Pride of place is given to Malmaison, both as homage to Napoleon, but also in recognition of the fact that it was Malmaison which set the agenda for European gardens of the early nineteenth century. There is an overview of how the park has been laid out - including the comment that it is "remarkable for a number of foreign animals" including a pair of black swans from New Holland - before each plate is described in detail. For Malmaison alone there are seven full-size plates depicting the fine gate house; the chateau seen from the drive (complete with the curious campaign-style portico at the front door); Napoleon himself taking a promenade around the rear of the house (the classical structure at far left no longer stands); the lake behind the house; a view of the gardens showing the hot-house in situ; a close-up of the hot-house ("more elegant" than that of Schönbrunn or Kew); and a view of the lake of Saint Cucufat which was once part of the much more extensive grounds. There are also four half-size plates, two showing the grounds of the sheep-fold, and two of the dairy, important parts of the garden now often disregarded.Taken together, these 11 plates are the most comprehensive and important contemporary suite of views of Malmaison, much copied and studied since to help understand how the garden was planned and run. The hot-house is an important record of a building, no longer standing, which was then the centre for the cultivation of Australian and Pacific exotics in Europe. The Malmaison section concludes with a map of the grounds (here bound slightly out of order). The other major houses noticed are: Mortefontaine, then owned by Napoleon's elder brother Joseph-Napoleon Bonaparte (plates 12-27); Ermenonville, the house of the Marquis René de Girardin built in honour of the ideas of Rousseau (plates 28-43 and unnumbered map of the grounds); and Mereville, the home of the Marquis Jean-Joseph de la Borde, the grounds of which included both a cenotaph to the memory of Captain Cook, but also a memorial column to de Girardin's two sons Edouard and Ange Auguste who had died at Lituya Bay in California in 1786 on the La Pérouse expedition (plates 44-57).

Tardieu, cm 79x192, stampata in 4 lastre. Very rare large chart of the Mediterranean Sea, based on "les déterminations astronomiques les plus recentes, sur les meilleures cartes marines et terrestres, remarques des pilotes et journaux de navigation par J.A.B. Lapie (fl. 1779 - 1850) was French cartographer and engraver active in the early part of the 19th century. He was born at Mezieres in 1771, died in 1850; in 1814 became director of the topographical cabinet of the king, was, from 1818 he was responsible for the direction of the new topographic map of France, and had the greatest part in the execution of this magnificent work. He published a classic Atlas (1812), which was improved in several successive editions, and a Universal Atlas of Ancient and Modern Geography (1828), one of the best of his era.

Londra: Dai Torchj di R. Zotti 1808 (Vols I-III) and 1809 (Vol. IV) - Four volumes. 12mo in 6s. (155x95mm). pp. [vi], xlii, 418; 419; [iv], 482; ccx (in fact ccxii), 211-448, iv, 8. Contemporary green vellum, borders tooled in blind to upper and lower covers. Spine decorated simply with gilt double lines, burgundy lettering piece lettered in gilt. Yapp edge to the fore-edge. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. This is a beautiful binding in excellent condition and with its colour fresh and vibrant. The contents are very good with some foxing and in a very few places, some tears and chips to the edges of the leaves. Volume I has an engraved frontispiece portrait of Dante and a biography based on writings by Girolamo Tiraboschi. Volume IV contains a long essay by Johann Bernhard Merian on the Origins of Italian Poetry and on Dante. Merian was a Director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. His essay was translated into Italian by Polidori and published for the first time in this edition. This is lovely example of the first edition of Zotti's London Dante in a high quality binding. At the beginning of the nineteenth century there was a renewed interest in Dante among British readers. Romualdo Zotti, described by a friend as "a man of much merit in the field of literature" was an expatriate printer living in London but he also identified a strain of Italophilia among the British aristocracy. He was a successful teacher of Italian to genteel young ladies and wrote guides to French and Italian grammar. He also published editions of other Italian poets such as Tasso and Petrarch. Between these two books, came his Dante. He was clearly aiming at the upper classes who were his pupils and his edition does not assume great scholarship in Italian literature: "I have assumed that the Reader is not among the great literatti but at the same time is not one of those wholly uncultured persons who have never, as it were, heard tell of Dante". An indication of his market can be gauged from the fact that each volume of the Commedia is dedicated to an aristocratic lady, respectively, The Countess of Lonsdale, the Countess of Dartmouth and the "ornatissima ed eruditissima Signora Pilkington". There is a list of very grand names at the end of volume IV beginning with the Queen and including the Duchess of Beaufort and Earl Spencer. They are described as Signori Associati and so are probably a mixture of subscribers and, given the large number of "Misses", pupils. Zotti was clearly a frightful snob and a world class social climber but occupied an important place in a particular cultural milieu. His Dante was published in a three volume second edition in 1819/20 but this first edition, alone, contains the Canzoni and Sonetti. [Attributes: First Edition]
