Yosan Hiroku [trans.: Secret Notes on the Cultivation of Silkworms]

Many fine single & double-page illus. 30; 29; 28 folding leaves. Three vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue patterned wrappers, block-printed title labels on upper covers (the first one a little defective), new stitching. Kyoto, Edo, & Osaka: 1803. First edition of one of the most important Japanese works on sericulture and one of the first Japanese technological works to be translated into a European language. A copy of the present work had been smuggled by Siebold from Nagasaki to Holland where it was translated by Hoffmann (1805-78), a Dutch government language specialist who had a thorough knowledge of Japanese. The 1848 translation (Yo san fi rok. L'Art d'Élever les Vers à Soie au Japon) was edited by Matthieu Bonafou (1793-1852), a member of a leading silk manufacturing family in Lyons and Turin, and director of the botanical gardens of Turin. As a result of the silkworm plague which was then damaging the European silk industry, he was deeply involved in the improvement of the production of different varieties of both silkworms and mulberry trees. Bonafou was interested in Chinese and Japanese methods of sericulture which led him to engage in translating and editing a series of relevant classic Chinese and Japanese texts for comparative purposes. The present work was deeply influential in Japan as well. It summarized many of the most advanced techniques - both Chinese and Japanese - in use in various regions of the country. Kamigaki presented his information in a succinct and straightforward style with attractive illustrations which made it readily comprehensible to ordinary farmers. This book is very handsomely printed and illustrated. The woodcuts depict all the steps in sericulture: incubation and rearing of worms, cocoons, selection of eggs for reproduction, techniques of keeping rooms warm enough to enhance hatching, the mulberry tree and its cultivation, feeding the silkworms with mulberry leaves, tools, making the silk, manufacturing fabrics, looms, etc., etc. Kamigaki (1753-1808), was a sericulturist and researcher who travelled throughout Japan to study the subject. A nice set of this handsome work. Minor worming to the upper blank margins. ❧ See Claudio Zanier's quite wonderful on-line article "Overcoming the Barrier of the Alps. Silk and Intellectual Legacy of Mathieu Bonafous between Lyon and Turin." Andrew O. Urevbu, "Culture and Technology. A Study on the 1997 Theme," on-line resource, p. 36-39.

The History of the Wars which arose out of the French Revolution: to which are prefixed, a review of the causes of that event.

London: Richard Phillips, 1803 - 2 volumes, quarto (272 x 211 mm). Mid-nineteenth century calf, richly gilt spines, tawny and black twin labels, two-line gilt border on sides, red speckled edges. Spines lightly sunned, volume II with band of fading at top of back cover, a few slight scrapes and abrasions, scattered foxing. A very good set. 4 folding maps ("The frontiers of France, Germany, and Holland", "The seat of war in Swabia, Bavaria and Switzerland", "The northern part of Italy, with part of Switzerland, and the Tyrol", "Seat of war in Lower Egypt"). First edition, thinly represented in British and Irish institutional libraries: Copac locates only five copies (BL, Oxford, Cambridge, Guildhall, National Trust). Stephens (1757–1821) was a prolific biographer, whose most highly regarded work was his Memoirs of John Horne Tooke (1813), considered in the nineteenth century as "the best life of Tooke available. [and] despite his having very marked whiggish views, his biographies were considered fair and important" (ODNB). The maps are engraved by Samuel John Neele, who worked for Faden, Cary and the Ordnance Survey amongst others, and established a high reputation for engraving. A stylishly bound set, from the library of the Earls of Cawdor - with their gilt arms within a gothic roundel at the centre of each cover - probably acquired by John Campbell, first earl (1790-1860); also with a pencilled note: "From Picton Castle Library". Lowndes IX pp. 2509-10. [Attributes: First Edition]

Milano, 1803, Anno II. Axs

         Le Peintre Graveur

Imprimerie de J. V. Degen, Pierre Mechetti, Devant Charles, Vienne 1803 - Adam Bartsch (1757–1821) and his Le Peintre Graveur, the giant mouse that would eventually consume the field of print studies. Bartsch’s 20 volumes (issued over fewer than 20 years) constitute one of the most astonishing accomplishments in the history of cataloguing works of art.Bartsch described what he regarded to be, with notorious inconsistency, “original” prints—namely those made by painters, thereby “proper” artists, from the 15th through the 17th century. An accomplishment yet to be fully surpassed in print studies, Le Peintre Graveur remains the most inclusive compilation in the history of any artistic medium—all of it done by hand without the help of photography, not to say a computer. 21 volumes bounded on 18 books ,years of print 1803-1821,all of them are first edition , complete set with all the engravings present some of them are double printed on 2 deferent type of papers , Full leather bound, some volumes have loose front board, some foxing on some pages, but over all a very clean copy and most important , it is a complete copy which is very rare . The book/ pages has been trimmed. Inside there is the odd mark in the text but generally very clean copy.          Thaddeus of Warsaw.

London: Printed by A. Strahan, for T. N. Longman and O. Rees, , 1803. In Four Volumes. 4 volumes, duodecimo (166 x 108 mm). Contemporary half calf, smooth spines divided into compartments by gilt rules, dark blue morocco labels, marbled sides. Housed in a custom blue quarter-calf solander case. With half-titles and final errata leaf in vol. 1. Bookplates of Edward Southwell Trafford. Light rubbing, front joint of vol. 1 tender, offsetting affecting quire K, vol. 3, contents otherwise fresh and clean, an excellent tall copy, preserving a few deckle edges. First edition of Porter's first acknowledged novel, a significant work that "ranks with Mrs Radcliffe's Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne as a super-rarity among Gothic Romantic novels" (Sadleir 1972). The first edition is held by only one of the six legal deposit libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland (the National Library of Scotland); Copac adds two copies at the University of Birmingham and the National Trust. OCLC records 13 locations in North America, but it is by any standard a notably rare book. ABPC lists no copy of the first edition at auction since 1975; Rare Book Hub notes only two copies offered for sale by Anderson Galleries in 1934 and 1937. Set during the Second Partition of Poland in the 1790s, Thaddeus of Warsaw is one of the earliest examples in English of the historical novel. Porter "crafted and pioneered many of the narrative tools most commonly associated with both the natural tale and the historical novel" (McLean 2007, p. 99). Despite being commercially published, this work did not have a large initial print run. It did, however, become enormously popular and successive editions were rapidly produced. Porter is best-known now for her 1809 novel The Scottish Chiefs, which retells the story of William Wallace, but during her lifetime she was famous primarily as the author of Thaddeus. Both Thaddeus and The Scottish Chiefs predate Walter Scott's Waverley (1814), Thaddeus by over a decade. While Porter's assertion of her direct influence upon Scott is "mostly wish-fulfilment" (ODNB), it is highly probable that Scott knew the work and that they had been briefly acquainted in childhood.

Contemporary brown calf, flat spines ruled into compartments in gilt, red morocco labels, page markers. Bookplate of George William Fox Kinnaird, Baron Kinnaird (1807-1878) to front pastedowns. An excellent set. First edition of this scarce early work of feminist biography by Mary Hays (1759–1843), the London-based novelist, radical and friend of Mary Wollstonecraft. Hays was given a copy of Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792 and was extremely moved; she contacted the publishers, and arranged a meeting with Wollstonecraft, becoming involved in London's radical Jacobin circles. Hays received advice from Godwin on writing her novels, and she tended Wollstonecraft on her deathbed. In the present work Hays created a significant biographical dictionary of 294 impressive women through the ages. Her novels include Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796), The Victim of Prejudice (1799), Harry Clinton (1804), and Family Annals (1817).

LAWS OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE. [bound with:] ACTS PASSED AT THE FIRST SESSION OF THE FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE...

Knoxville: Printed and published by George Roulstone, 1803. viii,320,[16]; 143,xi pp. Contemporary reverse calf. Spine slightly chipped, boards rubbed, corners lightly worn. Remnants of shelf label and manuscript date on spine. Later ownership inscription on front pastedown and annotation on titlepage. Initial leaves dampstained. Browning and scattered foxing. Final leaf of second work detached and in facsimile (contains only a dozen lines of index). Very good in original condition, untrimmed. In a half morocco box. The first collected laws of the state of Tennessee, and a work of considerable rarity. Allen notes that this was not an official publication of the state, but issued by Roulstone, Tennessee's first printer, as a speculative venture. Because all previous issues of the Tennessee press were either pamphlets, broadsides, or legislative journals, this has been called the first book printed in Tennessee. Allen asserts, however, that Roulstone may have previously bound together some early Legislative Acts printed in Knoxville before 1800. "Possibly it is the first bound book printed in the state. The fact that it was issued bound (increasing the possibility of survival) and the knowledge that Roulstone printed the book as a personal venture should render this book somewhat more likely to be found. Nonetheless, it is virtually never offered for sale today" - Allen. This copy bears the ownership inscription of Edward T. Sanford, a prominent Knoxville lawyer, who served as Assitant Attorney General from 1905 to 1907 and as a Supreme Court Justice from 1923 to 1930. It is also bound with a copy of the acts passed in the first session of the state legislature in the same year, very scarce in and of itself. A primary work of much importance and rarity, with an interesting Tennessee provenance. ALLEN RARITIES 13. ALLEN TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 79, 72. AII (TENNESSEE) 22, 46. McMURTRIE (TENNESSEE) 38, 42.

         POLAND / LITHUANIA / LATVIA / BELARUS

Üsküdar (Istanbul): Imperial Military Engineering School Press, . 1803 - Copper engraving with original full wash colour (Good, fine original colour, some worm holes with minor loss near both head and tail of centerfold, tight upper and lower margins as issued, blank margins contemporarily extended on all sides), neatline: 52.5 x 58 cm (20.5 x 23 inches); extended margins: 58 x 71.5 cm (23 x 28 inches). Extremely rare – the first map of Poland and Lithuania to have been printed in the Islamic world, published in Istanbul in 1803 by the Ottoman Military Engineering School Press, from Mahmud Raif Efendi’s revolutionary ‘Cedid Atlas’. This extraordinary map is the first map of Poland and Lithuania to have been printed in the Islamic World, and was issued within Mahmud Raif Efendi’s Cedid Atlas Tercümesi [A Translation of a New Atlas], the first Muslim-published world atlas based on European geographic knowledge and cartographic methods, published in Üsküdar, Istanbul in 1803 by the Imperial Military Engineering School Press. The atlas was issued in an exceedingly small print run expressly for use in elite Ottoman circles, ensuring that the present map is today extremely rare. The map embraces all of today’s Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and much of Belarus. The text and toponymy are entirely in Ottoman Turkish script, which dances elegantly across the composition. The scene showcases the political reality that existed between 1795 and 1807, after the ‘Three Partitions of Poland’, but before the revisions of the Treaty of Tilsit (1807). During this period, Poland ceased to be an independent state, its territory having been carved up and occupied by neighbouring powers, in stages, in 1772, 1793 and 1795. As shown here, the Polish lands taken by Prussia are bathed in a light blue wash; the territories occupied by Hapsburg Austria are coloured in green; while the lands consumed by Russia are coloured yellow. The map is finely detailed, depicting all major cities, towns, rivers and mountain ranges. The insets, in the lower left corner, feature a city plan of Warsaw, flanked by text, which explains the dismemberment of Poland, as well as providing statistics as to the land area and populations of the different partition sectors. The map is based upon one of the era’s finest European map of Poland, William Faden’s A Map of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania including Samogitia and Curland divided according to their dismemberments with the Kingdom of Prussia (London, 1799). Faden, in turn, based his geography on Giovanni Rizzi-Zanonni’s famous 1772 wall map of Poland. The Enlightenment in Ottoman Turkey & the ‘Cedid Atlas’ - The Ottoman Empire was for centuries one of the greatest cultural and intellectual civilizations of Europe, Asia and Africa. While it maintained significant social and academic exchange with Western Europe, through most of the 18th Century, Ottoman Turkey followed its own course, and was not swept up by the revolutionary changes of the European Enlightenment. The Ottoman elite was highly conservative by nature and often struck down proposals for Western-style reforms and technological innovations. Of great relevance to our story was the magnificent, yet brief, ‘false start’ of Islamic printing in the Ottoman Empire. Traditionally, while certain minority groups, such as Jews and Armenians, had quietly printed works in the Ottoman Empire for their own use, printing was generally banned. However, in 1729, Ibrahim Müteferrika, an esteemed intellectual and court official of Hungarian origin, was permitted to set up his own press, issuing the first-ever printed works in the Islamic world. Significantly, Müteferrika published the first maps in the Muslim world, within his printing of Katip Çelebi’s 1648 manuscript, Cihannuma [Universal Geography] (Istanbul, 1732). While these maps were both pioneering and beautiful, they were of a small scale, and the Cihannuma was not an atlas, but rather a pedagogical text. Unfortunately, Müteferrika’s publishing activities offended the Ottoma
