         VITAE EXCELLENTIUM IMPERATORUM

Parma: In aedibus Palatinis, typis Bodonianis, 1799. This stately folio printing of the earliest known collection of Classical biographies bears all the hallmarks of a Bodoni imprint: beautiful, creamy paper, elegant typography, and sharp, deeply impressed printing. Giambatista Bodoni (1740-1813) worked for more than 20 years at the Royal press in Parma before obtaining permission to set up his own private press in 1791. Brooks says, "He took his printing in all its branches very seriously, laboured incessantly to perfect his type, had a fine artistic sense, . . . and produced books not only of a very high standard, but also showing a remarkably distinct individuality." Bodoni used the finest quality paper available, and his clear, beautiful types have been envied and copied for many generations. "The result of his labours is a long list of books which . . . reach a very high, many of them the highest, level of technical excellence." Little is known about the life of the Roman historian Cornelius Nepos (c. 99-24 B.C.) beyond the fact that he was the friend of Cicero, Atticus, and Catullus. A number of lost works by him are mentioned by other ancient writers, some of whom quote brief passages. Of uncertain authorship but generally attributed to Nepos, the present work, in 16 books, comprises lives of famous men, including both distinguished Romans and foreigners, biographies that served for many generations as material for Latin school books because of the purity of their language. Although unreliable chronologically, the "Vitae" contain significant information not elsewhere available. The binding here matches the printing in its restrained grace, and comes from one of the longest-lived English workshops. Born in Pest, Hungary, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-86) served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart, worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman, and then settled in London, where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33, when the senior Joseph died, and the firm flourished under the son's leadership, becoming a leading West End bindery.. 350 x 247 mm. A Large Paper Copy. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Raphael Mauritius Bauer; front free endpaper with bookplate of Stephen D. Winkworth. Brooks 747. Just a hint of soiling to vellum, a couple of preliminary leaves with minor marginal foxing, but A VERY FINE COPY, the text clean, smooth, and bright, the margins vast, and the binding with virtually no signs of wear. This stately folio printing of the earliest known collection of Classical biographies bears all the hallmarks of a Bodoni imprint: beautiful, creamy paper, elegant typography, and sharp, deeply impressed printing.          Título de propiedad de las tierras y puentes de Santa pertenecientes al señor Dn. Pedro Abadia

1799/1833, Lima 1799 - " XVIII century illustration of a flying bridge in Lima". 2 folding watercolor diagrams. 45, 87, [8] manuscript leaves. Folio, original vellum; dozens of separate documents bound together. .Legal documents concerning Pedro Abadia's flying bridge. This manuscript volume bears the title "Título de Propiedad de las Tierras y Puente de Santa perteneciente al Sr. Dn. Pedro Abadia 1799." Abadia was a prominent citizen of Lima. In 1843, an American consul named Richard Cleveland wrote: "No stranger of respectability ever visited Lima, without enjoying the hospitality of Don Pedro Abadia. He was eminently hospitable, urbane, and friendly" with "an influence with the Viceroy and the Cabildo, unsurpassed by any other individual in the kingdom." Much of this volume relates to an unusual bridge spanning the Rio Santa which was operated jointly by Abadia and Jose Coquette. This "puente volante," or flying bridge, was essentially a boat attached downstream from an anchor which could be moved from shore to shore by the use of a rudder. The two illustrations in this volume show the specifics of this device. vols. volumen(es)/volume(s) S.P. páginas

Broadside (ca. 33 x 41 cm). With a woodcut emblem of the Batavian Republic at the head of each broadside.

Not in Knuttel; Landwehr, VOC. Ad 1: Broadside concerning the prolongation of the VOC's charter on trade in the East Indies. The texct declares the prolongation of the company's charter with another year, until 31 December 1799. With the unification of the various Dutch companies trading with the East in 1602, the Dutch government granted the new VOC monopoly over the Asian trade, as well as the powers to build forts, maintain armies and conclude treaties. In 1796 the VOC was nationalized and granted a charter, valid until 1798, to finish off current affairs. The charter ended up to be prolonged for two more times, first until December 1799, as stated in this broadside and finally until December 1800.Ad 2: Broadside proclaiming the installation of a new, intermediary board of directors dealing with the Dutch colonies and possessions along the coast of Guinea and in America (the West Indies). It further informs that the former board is annulled, and that the new board, consisting of seven members, will reside at Amsterdam and will hold its first meeting on 1 April 1798.Both broadsides are headed with the emblem of the Batavian Republic, including a personification of the Dutch Maiden and a lion holding the Batavian flag, and the Dutch translation of liberty, equality and fraternity. Ad 1 with two small holes, not affecting the text and some spots. Both broadsides very slightly wrinkled and slightly frayed along the margins, but otherwise in very good condition.

The School for Scandal. A Comedy

      J. Ewling, Dublin 1799 - Later piracy. vi, 93, [3] pp. 8vo. This Dublin piracy was long thought to be the first edition, and is recorded as such by Wise and Williams. Another Dublin piracy, printed in 1780 is now acknowledged as the first (cf. Nettleton & Case, British Dramatists, p. 941 & Rothschild 1845). R. Compten Rhodes, in his edition of the Plays and Poems of Sheridan ascribes a date of circa 1799 based on the use of the short "s" (cf. Rhodes, R.C. Plays & Poems of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, II, p. 171). The Ewling imprint is fictitious, as is, perhaps, the location of the printing.Sheridan's masterpiece was first performed 8 May 1777 on Drury Lane, running for twenty nights, and revived the next season for a further sixty-five performances. No authorized edition was printed in Sheridan's lifetime. This edition differs considerably from the author's manuscript and was possibly adapted from a performance.[Bound with:]OTWAY, Thomas.          Travels in the interior districts of Africa: performed under the direction and patronage of the African Association in the years 1795, 1796, and 1797. With an appendix, containing geographical illustrations of Africa. [WITH] The journal of a mission to the interior of Africa in the year 1805.

London I. W. Bulmer for the Author II. Murray & 1815 1799 - First editions of both works. 2 volumes in 1, 4to. First work: xxviii, 372, xcii pp., engraved portrait frontispiece, three folding maps and charts, two botanical engraved plates and three copper-engraved plates after drawings by the author, 2 engraved plates of music; Second work: xx, 373pp., engraved folding map. Light toning to apppendix of Travels, contemporary half calf gilt, a very handsome example. Two of the most important and influential books dealing with the exploration of the interior of Africa. Mungo Park, a young Scottish doctor, made his first journey in 1795, in search of the Niger. He spent two years travelling deep into the interior of Africa and his book provides a fine and vivid narrative of his adventures and his coming to grips with civilisations and customs unimagined by this reserved and rather diffident man. The journey was sponsored by the African Association in the hope of solving the riddle of the Niger, no doubt enthused by Bruce's success on the other side of the continent. After the failure of four previous expeditions it sent out Park with instructions "to pass on to the River Niger either by way of Bambouk or by such other route as should be found most convenient and to ascertain the course and, if possible, the rise and termination of that river". Setting out from the Gambia, Park marched east to Bambuk, crossing the Faleme and the Senegal, and on the 20th of July 1796, he "saw with infinite pleasure the great object of my mission - the long sought-for, majestic Niger, glittering to the morning sun, as broad as the Thames at Westminster, and flowing slowly to the eastward". Im Jahr der ersten englischen Ausgabe (erstmals auf Französisch in Paris 1797 erschienen). - Sabin 38961. Cox I, 67. Howes L 93. Forbes I, 309. - "La Pérouse`s expedition was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America" (Hill Collection 972 zur EA). - "In 1783 the French government resolved to send an expedition to the Pacific to complete Captain James Cook`s unfinished work, and in particular to explore the passages in the Bering Sea, which had been a mystery to Europeans since the sixteenth century. King Louis XVI himself took a hand in drafting the plan and itinerary, a copy of which is in the Municipal Library at Rouen, France, and when La Pérouse was selected to lead the fleet gave him an audience before he sailed. In command of two ships, La Boussole and L`Astrolabe (Commandant de Langle), he left Brest on 1 August 1785 making for Brazil. Doubling Cape Horn he refitted in Chile, then sailed to the Sandwich Islands and thence to Alaska, where he turned south exploring and surveying the coast as far as California. After a short refit at Monterey, he sailed across the Pacific, discovered uncharted islands, and visited Macao and Manila. After six weeks reprovisioning and refreshing he left on 10 April 1787 to survey the coasts and territories north of Korea, which had been described and commented on by Christian missionaries. He sailed up the Gulf of Tartary, naming several points on both its shores and learned that Sakhalin was an island. In September he put in to Kamchatka to replenish his supplies. From there he dispatched an officer, Lesseps, overland to Paris with accounts of his discoveries, while he turned south making for New Holland. In December, at Tutuila, Samoa, which Bougainville had called the Navigator Islands when he explored them in 1768, natives suddenly attacked a party from L`Astrolabe seeking water and killed de Langle and eleven others. La Pérouse left without taking reprisals and sailed through the Pacific Islands to Norfolk Island and to Botany Bay. He was sighted off the coast there on 24 January 1788 but bad weather prevented his entering the bay for two days. By then Governor Arthur Phillip had sailed to Port Jackson, but John Hunter had remained with the Sirius and the transports, and assisted La Pérouse to anchor. He established a camp on the northern shore, now called after him, and maintained good relations with the English during his six-week stay. He sailed on 10 March and was not heard of again. His disappearance led the French government in 1791 to equip another expedition under Bruny d`Entrecasteaux to look for him, but the search was fruitless" (Australian Dictionary of Biography). - Die Text-Bde. leicht gebräunt und nur wenig fleckig.
