A Frustrated Former Officer Pushes Hamilton Too Far

1799 - Autograph Letter Signed, to Alexander Hamilton, September 30, 1799. 2 1/2 pp. "This Letter also tells me That it 'was not for the want of Friendship in General Washington nor yourself that I had not my appointment in the Army but from other causes['] which you could not with propriety explain. This to me is a most extraordinary proceeding that a man who has professed such friendship for another as you have for me for so long a period, and after so recently seing each other face to face . (knowing my business to Philadelphia and telling me that my most sanguine wishes should be accomplished) should once lend an listing ear to any thing to check my expectation. I have an undoubted right to call on you to know what those other causes are. I therefore do claim and request of you an explanation of them, upon every principle of honor, as a friend Soldier and Gentleman."In December 1798, during the Quasi-War with France, Washington and Hamilton recommended Caleb Gibbs (1748-1818) to Secretary of War James McHenry to command a Massachusetts regiment. However, Senator Benjamin Goodhue and Congressmen Harrison Gray Otis, Samuel Sewall, Dwight Foster, and Isaac Parker, all objected, considering Gibbs "as a trifler." In March, Washington angrily protested that the five weeks of work that he, Hamilton, and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney had undertaken to identify proper officers could be "set at naught" by "any Member of Congress who had a friend to serve, or a prejudice to endulge." Washington called attention to the "striking" instance of Gibbs, who "served through the whole Revolutionary war, from the Assembling of the first Troops at Cambridge, to the closing of the Military Drama at the conclusion of Peace without reproach; and in the last Act of it, If I mistake not, was a Major in the selected Corps of light Infantry. He was strongly recommended by Generals Lincoln, Knox, Brooks & Jackson; all on the same theatre with himself and who ought to be perfectly acquainted with his respectability & pretensions: yet the Veto of a Member of Congress (I presume) was more respected & sufficient to set him aside." McHenry responded that Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott also opposed Gibbs' commission, and Washington reluctantly refused to push the matter further.[1]Between January and June 1799, Gibbs wrote to Hamilton three times. Hamilton responded to this fourth letter on October 24, "I have received your very improper letter. This is not the first instance of my life in which good offices on my part have met with an ill return. Tis therefore as curious as it is unbecoming to interrogate me in a premptory and even censorious manner about the causes which may have induced the President to reject the nomination. It is true that collaterally and after the thing was determined upon, I heard what they were, but it was in a manner which did not leave me at liberty to explain to you. This I before hinted, and you must on reflection see the impropriety of your having addressed me on the subject as you have done.If any one has wickedly endeavoured to make you believe that there has been any thing uncandid or unfriendly in my conduct, you ought to dispise the author. If you have inferred it from the reserve in my mode of writing to you on the subject, you formed as false an estimate of what the delicacy of my situation required, as you did of my true character."[2]*This item is also being offered in part II of The Alexander Hamilton Collection[1] Papers of Alexander Hamilton, vol. 22, July 1798-March 1799, 428-31, 466-68, 472-73; W.         Chiesa di San Stefano Rotondo

Dimensioni 260x195. Etchings, dating from the late eighteenth century. Magnificent proofs, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "flower petal", with margins, in good condition. Unknown to all repertoires that we consulted, these rare works depicting places in Rome are stylistically dated to the last decade of the eighteenth century. The first plate depicts the church of San Giovanni e Paolo, which appeared to be the title of the series; we find the inscription "Views of Rome Designed and Carved by Icaorat." However, we were not able to attribute the works, possibly belonging to a series of more than 5 prints. Works not described.

        Voyage aux sources du Nil

New illustrated edition, after the original published in 1790. Our edition presents the volume of atlas composed of a map and twenty-two plates engraved by Tardieu the Elder.Bindings in full blond calf rooted of ice time. Smooth backs decorated with 5 irons to the ship. 2 friezes framing on the boards. Title and volume pieces in red morocco. Roulette on the cuts and inside. Golden slices. Traces of friction on the backs and corners.Very nice set, with the backs presenting ships with deployed sails. The expedition of James Bruce, Scottish, had an avowed purpose, to discover the sources of the Nile. After disembarking at Alexandria, he traveled throughout Ethiopia, and into the deserts of Egypt. It was near Kartoum that he spotted the sources of the Blue Nile. James Bruce can be considered one of the first scientific explorers on earth: it is with great rigor that he amassed precise knowledge of geography, fauna and flora, meteorology ... The Journey to the Nile Springs is certainly one of the best travel stories about Africa. The first three volumes are devoted to mores, commerce, institutions; the fifth and last volume deals with natural history.Ex libris Château des Coudreaux (stamp) Chez Lepetit A Paris An VII in-18 (8,5x13,5cm) 237pp. et 225pp. et 244pp. et 255pp. et 255pp. et 223pp. et 213pp. et 258pp. et 108pp. (2) 9 volumes reliés

National Magazine; or, a Political, Biographical, Historical and Literary Repository (The 1st Issue, Signed by James Lyon)

Richmond, Virginia: James Lyon, 1799. Original wraps. Good +. The June 1st, 1799 maiden issue of "National Magazine", which represents the first magazine ever published in Virginia, the first magazine printing of the Virginia Constitution and Kentucky Resolutions, and "an extraordinary contemporary resource for the anti-Federalist, Jeffersonian, Strict Constructionist philosophy of the Virginia School, a philosophy that Virginians developed to oppose the policies of Alexander Hamilton and the Washington-Adams administrations " (from "The Remnant Trust"). This, the "first National Magazine", was issued in Richmond by its young publisher and editor, James Lyon, and was printed semi-quarterly. Six issues all told were published in Richmond, "after which Lyon removed to the new seat of the Federal government". This orginal issue has been beautifully and skillfully re-bound (in 1998) by the Thistle Bindery of Florence, MA and has had both its original light-brown wrappers seemlessly bound-in. The wrappers show chipping along the edges and a degree of inevitable wear but, miraculously, almost no loss to the titling. Crisp new endsheets and thick card wrappers nicely protect the fragile original text, which has held up surprisingly well. There's a bit of light, forgivable offsetting to the body --and along the original endsheets-- and the Subscription page, which shows that one "Prin Perkins" is to receive a six month subscription for the price of two dollars, INCLUDES JAMES LYON'S STRONG SIGNATURE IN INK AS AFFIRMATION. Octavo, 107 original pgs. plus an itemized laid-in letter from Thistle Bindery and a wonderful handwritten 2 pg. example of "Binder's Notes" along the new rear endsheets, mapping out the care --and the technical processes-- that went into both creating such an elegant re-binding and protecting the original text. An impressive, important piece of Americana.
