In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results.Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, «Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l?ancienne France».Engelmann's Paris printing company, -Engelmann et Graf- was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

Lacking the map as usual. 8vo. Nineteenth century speckled calf, green morocco label to spine, bookplate of F. Larnac à Usez to front pastedow, dampstaining throughout. viii, 266pp. Paris, Letellier, 1789.[Bound with] ROOKE (Henry). Voyage sur Le Cotes De L'Arabia Heureuse. First French edition. vi, 153pp. Paris, Chez Royez Libraire, According to Ferguson this is the first of the two French editions printed in 1789. Certainly it is a far fuller account than that published by Knapen, and includes an eighty-five page account of the discovery of Australia. Watkin Tench (1758?-1833) entered the Marines in 1776, and fought in the American War of Independence rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his promotion to Captain, Tench volunteered to serve in the proposed Colony of New South Wales and travelled on board the transport Charlotte arriving at Botany Bay in 1788. An acute and perceptive observer, he took careful note of the new experiences provided by the Australian continent and his fellows' reactions to it. When not writing these down, Tench lead several expeditions into the interior, discovering amongst other things the Nepean River, which he traced to the Hawkesbury. He failed however to conquer the Blue Mountains, the expedition having to turn back at the Razorback. Tench's book was an immediate success with the public, and ran to three editions in England during 1789 and many others in Dublin, France, Germany and the Netherlands. A contemporary review testifies to this success: ?A regular, connected, and seemingly well authenticated narrative of the expedition, and of the adventures of the emmigrant. Our author's modest preface, and unassuming manner throughout the whole of this little work, entitle him to our attention and regard? (Critical Review, May 1789). Ferguson, 53; McLaren, 'Lapérouse in the Pacific', 813; Davidson, p75; Hill, 1686 (without the map); Kroepelien, 1280. [Attributes: First Edition]

Méchanique analitique. [Bound with:] Théorie des fonctions analytiques.

Veuve Desaint; de l’Imprimerie de la République 1788; An V [1797], Paris; Paris - An exceptional volume, in a fine contemporary binding, containing the first edition of Lagrange?s masterpiece, the Méchanique, ?one of the outstanding landmarks in the history of both mathematics and mechanics? (Sarton, p. 470) and ?perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence, together with the corrected second printing of the Théorie, containing Lagrange?s formulation of calculus in terms of infinite series, which provided the basis for Augustin-Louis Cauchy?s development of complex function theory in the first decades of the next century. The Méchanique contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton?s Principia? (Evans). ?Lagrange?s masterpiece, the Méchanique Analitique (Paris, 1788), laid the foundations of modern mechanics, and occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton?s Principia? (Wolf). ?The year 1797 ? saw the appearance of the famous work of Lagrange, Théorie des fonctions analytiques ? This book developed with care and completeness the characteristic definition and method in terms of ?fonctions dérivées,? based upon Taylor?s series, which Lagrange had proposed in 1772 ? Lagrange?s Théorie des fonctions was only one, but by far the most important, of many attempts made about this time to furnish the calculus with a basis which would logically modify or supplant those given in terms of limits and infinitesimals? (Cajori).?With the appearance of the Mécanique Analytique in 1788, Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem . [it] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mechanics, demonstrated their connection and mutual dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope. It is divided into two parts, statics and dynamics, each of which treats solid bodies and fluids separately. There are no diagrams. The methods presented require only analytic operations, subordinated to a regular and uniform development. Each of the four sections begins with a historical account which is a model of the kind.? (DSB).?In [Méchanique Analitique] he lays down the law of virtual work, and from that one fundamental principle, by the aid of the calculus of variations, deduces the whole of mechanics, both of solids and fluids. The object of the book is to show that the subject is implicitly included in a single principle, and to give general formulae from which any particular result can be obtained. The method of generalized co-ordinates by which he obtained this result is perhaps the most brilliant result of his analysis. Instead of following the motion of each individual part of a material system, as D?Alembert and Euler had done, he showed that, if we determine its configuration by a sufficient number of variables whose number is the same as that of the degrees of freedom possessed by the system, then the kinetic and potential energies of the system can be expressed in terms of those variables, and the differential equations of motion thence deduced by simple differentiation ? Amongst other minor theorems here given I may mention the proposition that the kinetic energy imparted by the given impulses to a material system under given constraints is a maximum, and the principle of least action. All the analysis is so elegant that Sir William Rowan Hamilton said the work could only be described as a ?scientific poem?? (Rouse Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics). The Méchanique analitique ?was certainly regarded as the most important unification of rational mechanics at the turn of the 18th century and as its ?crowning? (Dugas). This achievement of unification and the abstract-formal nature of the work, physically reflected in immediate applications, earned the extravagant p

Light foxing to text and maps -- less than is often found for this set. Vol. I engraved frontispiece portrait of Edward Gibbon by John Hall after Sir Joshua Reynolds. Volumes II through VI (are the true London Large Quarto First Edition, issued 1781 through1788. Volume I is the revised third issue, which, though issued but one year after the first issue of Volume I (in 1777), it is the first with Gibbon's final revisions, and preferred footnotes at the bottoms of the pages. Professor J. B. (John Bagnall) Bury notes in a 1909 edition the many changes Gibbon made in this "Third Edition" of volume I: "...for the sake not of correcting mis-statements of fact, but of improving the turn of the sentence or securing greater accuracy of expression." All indications point toward Gibbon himself considering the resulting text definitive -- no further such emendations were offered in the next (1781) reprinting. Further, one of his most important presentation copies to his benefactor of the complete set is recorded by Norton as, "A set made up of Vol. 1, Third Edition, volumes 2 through 6 First Editions, bound in red morocco, presented to Lord Sheffield by Gibbon, with an inscription in his hand-writing, sold at Sotheby's on June 26, 1933." Thus, this (mixed) issue constitutes the textural standard, reprinted for more than 200 years, without significant emendation. (Quoted and paraphrased from A Bibliography of the Works of Edward Gibbon by J.E. Norton, Oxford U. Press, 1940.). "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147). "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works. Whereas other eighteenth-century writers in this field such as Voltaire are still quoted with respect, the Decline and Fall is the only historical narrative prior to Macaulay which continues to be reprinted and actually read." PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN, P. 220 Gibbon (1737-1794) conceived of his plan for Decline and Fall while "musing amid the ruins of the Capitol" on a visit to Rome. For the next 10 years he worked away at his great history, which traces the decadence of the late empire from the time of the Antonines and the rise of Western Christianity. "The confusion of the times, and the scarcity of authentic memorials, pose equal difficulties to the historian, who attempts to preserve a clear and unbroken thread of narration," he writes. The first edition of Gibbon's work was printed over time, the first three volumes being printed between 1776 and 1781. The engraved portrait of Gibbon here in Vol. 1 was issued separately in 1780 -- presumably supplied to many early subscribers. In this set portrait is found as frontis illustration to Vol. 1, as usual for the set, with the large Eastern Roman Empire large folding map and the somewhat smaller Europe and Asia adjacent to Constantinople in Vol. 2 (as called for) and the Western Roman Empire folding map in Vol. 3 (as called for). The first issue of Vol. 1 appeared in 1776. An immediate commercial success, a second issue of a thousand copies, errors uncorrected, was printed released on June 3, 1776. "Gibbon wrote on March 29, 1777 , 'We are now printing a third edition in quarto of 1000 copies. Gibbon now agrees to take David Hume's advice and print the footnotes at the bottom of the pages. "The notes at the bottom take up much less space than I could have imagined," he wrote. A postscript was added to the preface with Gibbon declaring his intention to complete the additional volumes. Bears the bookplates of William Sotheby, member of an important English literary family. The 1777 - 1788 London Quarto Edition is recognized as a landmark of history and of literature in English. Only a handful of complete and collectible sets are offered worldwide. A lovely, restored set, the mixing of which constitutes the earliest authoritative edition of this monumental literary achievement.
