Earlier authors had described Paris's monuments and the lives of its wealthy elites, but Mercier was the first to try to capture in words the aspects of everyday life. Mercier's writing influenced Balzac and other nineteenth-century French novelists and continues to serve as a major source of social and cultural history for historians. Another two volumes were printed in 1788. French text. Note bookplate of Sir William Paxton, businessman and Welsh Member of Parliament. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In 1750, the poetesss married nobleman and war official Isaac Reinder, baron of Raesfelt. In 1753, the couple moved into his property in Heemse near Hardenberg (Overijssel), which Clara Feyoena would not leave until her death. Although the absence of an intellectual community in her place of residence gave her very little inspiration, she started writing again when she met Arnout Vosmaer (1720-1799), head of the art and nature cabinets of stadtholder Willem V. Around 1774 she wrote this bundle of poems, attributed to her two grandchildren: Reinhart Izaak and Maria Clara, who she raised after the passing of her daughter. Although the book is dated in 1774, it first appeared in 1783. That could certainly have been influenced by the critique that fellow scholar Arnout Vosmaer had presented upon an earlier version by her request. As opposed to her many predecessors in this genre, van Sytzama has incorporated many personal elements in her poetry, and also stretched her description beyond the edges of the garden; also the forests and fields are sung of.

Bel exemplaire.Bibliothèque de feu M. Ch. Chadenat, 5941.Sabin, 16118.

         Benjamin Franklin

January 8, 1783. Autographed letter signed by Jonathan Williams, grandnephew of Benjamin Franklin, acting as his agent, measures 71/2" x 9". The letter written by Williams is 2 1/4 long, then is endorsed by "JNB". It also contains the writing of a third hand which is a copy of the original letter enclosed by Williams, for a total of 3 1/4 pages. The letter is in very good condition with minor toning around the edges and the usual folds. It is an excellent representation of what was occurring in Europe and the United States of America during this period. The letter in full: (Letter to Benjamin Vaughan) "My dear Friend/ Nantes, Jan. 8, 1783/ I hope you are now with your amiable Lady enjoying all the Secrets of domestic happiness with a pleasing addition to your Family. I beg you will make my best Wishes acceptable to her though I have not had the Honour to know her. Time which produces many strange Things may perhaps give me an Opportunity of cultivating her acquaintance. / I beg you will read the enclosed Letter to Lord Shelburne then Seal and deliver to him. I think the matters I have stated to him will be deemed worthy his Lordships attention, for it is certain every good Minister should detest these Piratical Acts, and I am inclined to think his Lordship will be pleased that he has an Opportunity of showing to the World his disapprotation of Acts which were not only permitted but rewarded by his predecessors. If the Brig & Cargo is returned pray represent the propriety of the Brig having protection as far as Nantes when the will be as she was, or let her be sold & the amount remitted me./ I will make no apology for traveling you because independent of motives of Friendship to me I am sure your Heart will always take a warm part in favour of the injured. Its against Traitors of any kind. At any Rate let me request you to assist Capt. Birrel in gaining his Liberty and finding his Way hither. I am uncertain whether this will meet you in Paris in London, if in the former City pray take the last method of Conveyance, if in the latter do me the favour to deliver it yourself. / I am dear Friend / most sincerely Affectionately / yours, / Jon Williams"

In a different hand “Pray forward the enclosed to Capt Birrell and let him have what Cash he may want. JNB (?)”

In another hand “copy of a letter from Mr. Jonathan Williams of Nantes to Capt Birrel of the Brig Trio, at Kinsale. /Nantes Jany 9, 1782/ Sir / I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, not on account of the loss I suffer by it, but for the manner in which it is occasioned. I am confident the Justice of the British Administration will not only preserve your Liberty, but restitute my Property. You will therefore stick by the Brig toll she is finally condemned or returned, I follow the Orders of my Friend Benjamin Vaughan Esq, who will supply you with what money you may want. / I am Your friend & Servant/ (signed) Jon Williams."

Jonathan Williams (May 20, 1751 – May 16, 1815), American businessman, military figure, politician and writer, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, a grandnephew of Benjamin Franklin. He became Chief of Engineers of the Army Corps of Engineers, was the first superintendent of West Point, and was elected to the Fourteenth United States Congress. Williams spent most of the period from 1770 to 1785 in England and France, where he assisted Franklin with business affairs and served as a commercial agent in Nantes, France.

Benjamin Vaughan (1746-1900) Born in Jamaica to Samuel Vaughan, a merchant and planter, and Sarah Hallowell, a native Bostonian, Vaughan was raised in London and educated at Cambridge and Lincoln's Inn. At university, he fell in with the coterie of Joseph Priestley, Benjamin Franklin, Jeremy Bentham, and William Petty, the Earl of Shelburne, and took on many of their unorthodox, perhaps radical political, social, and religious views. Whether a product of his own colonial origins or his contact with Franklin, Priestley, and Price, Vaughan took a particularly keen interest in American affairs, advocating reconciliation throughout the Revolutionary conflict. In 1783, as a result of his connections to then-Prime Minister Shelburne and his association with Franklin (having seen to the English publication of the first volume of Franklin's political writings), Vaughan was dispatched to Paris to mollify Franklin and the American negotiators and assure them of good English intentions. Although he was barred as a dissenter from any official role in the negotiations, Vaughan played an important unofficial role in quickening the closure of the treaty and the formalization and recognition of American independence. As Vaughan's political and diplomatic star was rising, his improbable pursuit of the hand of Sarah Manning, the daughter of an ardent Tory, led him to study medicine in Edinburgh to establish his name as a reputable suitor. Although he never completed his studies, he did marry Sarah in 1781, joining her father's mercantile business shortly thereafter, and he maintained an active interest in medical affairs for much of the remainder of his life. He remained loyal to Shelburne after Shelburne's departure from the ministry in 1784, and was elected to represent Calne in Parliament in 1793. However in the backlash against republicanism, Vaughan's political views and his sympathy for the French Revolution conspired to make him unpopular and when war with France erupted in February, 1793, he began to feel the heat. As a result, when called before the Privy Council in May, 1794, he decided to move to America, where his popularity was undiminished, by way of France. Ironically, as a foreign national arriving in Paris during the most radical phase of the Revolution, he was immediately arrested and imprisoned. Released in July, Vaughan remained in Switzerland and France for over three years before receiving a passport to join his wife and children in the United States.

Sobesednik liubitelei rossiiskogo slova, soderzhashchii raznyia sochineniia v stikhakh i v proze nekotorykh Rossiiskikh pisatelei, chast' X [Colloquium of Lovers of the Russian Word, containing various writings in poetry and prose by certain Russian writers, part 10]

St. Petersburg: izhdiveniem Imperatorskoi Akademii Nauk, 1783. Octavo (21.8 × 12.7 cm). Early twentieth-century quarter leather over five raised bands; marbled paper-covered boards and endpapers; fore and lower edge apparently unresized; 176, [2] pp. Engraved allegorical title vignette. Small private owner label removed from front pastedown; a few leaves lightly foxed, else very good. An attractively-bound copy of issue ten of this famous literary periodical, of which sixteen parts appeared in total in 1783-1784. The journal was published by the Academy of Sciences at the behest of Catherine the Great and in close cooperation with Princess Ekaterina Dashkova (1743-1810), a confidante of Catherine and one of the leading figures of the Russian Enlightenment. "Sobesednik" is unique for being the first attempt to publish only original Russian works, rather than relying in large part on translations of foreign texts. Its influence on Russian literature and language was quite significant and Dashkova and her co-editors were able to involve some of the leading Russian writers of the time, including Gavrila Derzhavin, Ippolit Bogdanovich, Dmitri Fonvizin, Vasilii Kapnist, Ermil Kostrov and Mikhail Kheraskov. The journal also contained numerous original works by Catherine the Great herself, which at times constituted over half of its content. After some controversy the publication ceased after sixteen months. "Long after it had ceased publication it was still cherished by the Russian intelligentsia as a landmark in Russian literature, and although Catherine wrote so much for its pages, it remained Dashkova's journal" (Ian Grey, Catherine the Great). This tenth issue contains the first publication of a humorous ode to immortality, "Khochu k bessmert'iu priiutit'sia", by Aleksandr S. Khvostov's (1753-1820) a Russian diplomat and official who was active as a tranlator and writer and a friend of Derzhavin. Bitovt 2038. KVK, OCLC show complete, or nearly complete, copies only at Columbia, Danish National Library, Harvard, NYPL, and Göttingen, and single volumes at Amherst, Urbana Champaign, and Wisconsin.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Jas Duane"), to Col. Robert Troup, about a Mr. Westly(?) and his occupation of a farm purchased from Duane in 1779

Manour Livingston [New York] 1783 - 1 page. Docketed on verso. 4to. "I have just receiv'd Information from Mr. Westly, father in law to Mr McDugale, that his farm and furniture have been seized . He entered into an agreement to purchase that farm from me in the year 1779 but never has performed a little of his Contract & consequently has no title. He has besides been supplied by my overseer with sundry articles of which I have no account & there is a claim laid in to some of their sheep as belonging to his wife's relations. I believe all that belongs to him will do little more than pay a reasonable Rent for the farm . All I request is that no advantage may be taken of my Distance from the place, and that you will be pleased to furnish me with a state of the Demand & the proceedings."An active member of the Revolutionary generation, James Duane (1733-1797) served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, New York state senator, post-colonial mayor of New York city, and the first U.S. Federal District Judge from New York. He was also one of the founders of the New York Manumission Society, which sought to abolish slavery in the state, as was this letter's recipient, Robert Troup (1754-1832).          Aandelen beurs Amsterdam - Pierre Fouquet, 1783.

         Antique Master Print-THREE GRACES-CHARITES-NATURE-FERTILITY-Rubens-Michel-1783

      - Original master print, titled: 'The Three Graces commonly called Rubens's Three Wives'. It shows the three graces picking fruit from a tree. A putti is helping them. A large store of various fruit (pumpkin, grapes, plums and artichoke, among others) is already at their feet. The Graces (or Charites) were greek goddesses of charm, beauty, nature and fertility. Clearly this print depicts the aspects nature and fertility. Handcoloured line and stipple engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: Original antique master print, published by John Boydell, in 1783. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Michel after a painting by Rubens. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish painter, who ran a large studio in Antwerp.

A descriptive dictionary of the Indian Islands & adjacent countries.London, Bradbury & Evans, 1856. 8vo. With a folding engraved map of parts of the East Indies and Southeast Asia, with title "Asiatic Archipelago". Original publisher's blind-blocked brown cloth, title in gold on spine.

Cordier, Indosinica, col. 1109; for the author: Turnbull, “Crawfurd, John (1783-1868)”, in: ODNB (online ed.) First edition of an authoritative work, in encyclopaedia form, on the Indonesian Archipelago. It is a sequel to Crawfurd's much-acclaimed History of the Indian Archipelago (1820). Initially the author planned to publish a second edition of his History, but "on mature consideration" he came to the conclusion that the subject "would be most conveniently and compendiously treated by an alphabetic arrangement" (preface). It is primarily concerned with Java, but the Malay peninsula, Thailand (Siam), the Philippines, Cambodia and Cochin-China (Viet Nam) are also treated. The map has had extensive routes added in red ink (with arrows to indicate the direction of travel), identified as "AW (routes 1867-68)", and the pencilled itinerary for a 1868 "Molucca Voyage" no doubt belongs to one of these routes. With a small tear in the map (whose gutter margin is reinforced with gray paper), affecting only the border and open ocean. Still in good condition, and untrimmed. Binding slightly worn but also good. An essential source for any study of the East Indies in the 19th century.

New Ipswitch, NH, 1783-1813. 7 stab-stitched manuscript volumes, 1 is 6-1/4" x 4" (18 pp.), 1 is 12-1/2" x 8" (12 pp.), 1 is 14" x 12-1/2" (16 pp.) and 4 are 7-1/4" x 6-1/2" (6 pp., 8 pp., 14 pp., 18 pp.). Manuscript in ink to most rectos and versos. Moderate browning, somewhat lighter in places, foxing, some leaves have dampstaining, tears or chips, with loss of text in a few cases. An interesting archive. $850. * New Ipswitch is a small New Hampshire town on the Massachusetts border, about 40 miles north of Worcester. The volumes in this archive record the daily operations of the town government, such as lists of taxes collected from residents and payments for selectmen, constables and building expenses. It is, on the whole, an interesting collection of source material concerning the inner workings of small New England town government in the post-Revolutionary period.
