BY A GENTLEMAN OF THE PROVINCE

Printed for the Author; and Sold by J. Bew, London 1781 - x, 2, 1*-2*, 3-436 pp [as issued]. Contemporary half sheep with marbled boards [some spotting, corners rubbed, spinehead lightly chipped], gilt-lettered spine label [small corner chip to label]. Glue remnant on front pastedown, foxed endpapers. Clean text with widely scattered foxing and occasional dusted outer margins. Very Good. Reverend Peters was a Loyalist Episcopal minister in Hebron, Connecticut. "He made himself so obnoxious by his prominence and activity as such, that he was presented with a coat of tar and feathers and permitted to visit England for his health." [Church]. "Mobbed in Connecticut for his Tory activities, Peters fled to England and, in retaliation, wrote this false and vicious misrepresentation of that commonwealth. Included were the Blue laws of the New Haven colony, manufactured by his animosity, but still swallowed as true by many people." [Howes]. His prefatory remarks, which purport to be "unbiassed by partiality or prejudice," charge Nutmeggers with "sinister views and purposes" and cast doubt on their "right to the soil they occupied." He charges them with "wanton and barbarous persecutions, illegal practices, daring usurpations, &c. &c." "His apocryphal history of Connecticut is a remarkable tissue of misstatements and exaggerations, not to say of malicious falsehoods." [Church]. "The first edition is very rare." REVOLUTION IN AMERICA

London: for Lockyer Davis, 1781. First edition. 8vo, bound in period full tree calf with gilt ruled flat bands on the spine and a single red morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. xvi, 181, [2 ads] pp. A very nice and well preserved copy indeed, the text especially fresh and clean, the binding solid and firm with strong hinges and joints and only some expected rubbing or edge wear to the old calf. This is the first, unauthorized edition. Apparently the translator procured a copy of the unpublished manuscript from Raynal and without his knowledge or consent had simultaneous English and French editions published. The work was "intended to supplement the author's earlier history of European trade in the two Indies" (Howes). "States in brief form the leading facts from 1763 to 1778. Discusses, after the manner of the time, the claims of both parties. Interesting from its point of view" (Larned).

Fragmens d?un poéme moral sur Dieu. Ad majorem gloriam virtutis.

      o. (ebd., S. 43). Testament and Pay Receipt for a Black Revolutionary War Soldier

Hartford, 1781. Near Fine. Two documents as follows:1. Small Autographed Document Signed by Joseph Isham, Jr., Daniel Foot, and Abraham(?) Foot, as Selectman of the town of Colchester, Connecticut, and dated 31 January 1781, stating that "Edward Carter, a Mulatto Fellow is enlisted during the war and has served upwards of three years for the Town of Colchester." Approximately 7.5" x 6" on laid paper with partial watermark. Very near fine.2. Partially printed pay receipt dated 5 July 1781 Signed by Edward Carter with an "X" ("Edward Carter, His Mark X"). Certifying that Carter was paid twenty seven pounds for his service. Approximately 7" x 6.75" on laid paper. Very near fine. The story of Carter is compelling. Edward Carter was a veteran of the French and Indian War and enlisted in 1777 along with several other freemen and several slaves who were freed for the purpose of serving Colchester and Connecticut in the War. Additionally, his four sons also joined. Carter served in combat in Germantown in Philadelphia, participated in the failed defense of Ft. Mifflin on the Delaware, and wintered at Valley Forge with Washington. The following year, he participated in the Battle of Monmouth when Washington overtook the British there, and wintered again with Washington at White Plains, where he was reunited with his sons. In 1779 he participated with all four of his sons in the successful overthrow of the British works at Stoney Point near the Hudson River. After this Carter worked fortifying West Point and was present for the hanging of Major John Andre. He served in New England until the end of the War.Interesting and uncommon documentation of a black soldier who fought, along with much of his family, for the duration of the Revolutionary War. Congress Demands Pennsylvania Soldiers for a Final Assault on the British Army

1781 - Printed Document, Manuscript Order of the Continental Congress, to Arthur St. Clair, on levying troops in Pennsylvania to organize at Philadelphia, signed by Thomson as Secretary of Congress, September 19, 1781. 1 p., 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. As Washington's gathered the Continental Army around Yorktown, Virginia, for a final, decisive battle against British forces, tactical planning continued for major cities and strategic points throughout America. The importance of victory and adequate defense weighed heavily on the Revolution's military leaders. Alexander Hamilton, writing to his wife, Eliza, from his post in Annapolis on September 18, was concise: "I am going to do my duty. Our operations will be so conducted, as to economize the lives of men. Exert your fortitude and rely upon heaven."[1] Complete TranscriptBy the United States in Congress AssembledSeptr 19, 1781Ordered that major genl St Clair cause the levies of the Pennsylvania line now in Pennsylvania to rendezvous at or near Philadelphia with all possible expeditionExtract from the minutesCharles Thomson secyIn January of 1781, the Pennsylvania militia posted near Morristown, New Jersey, rebelled against the difficult conditions at the camp and the low pay (for most, $20 for three years of service). The rebellion was successfully suppressed but left the Continental Army with a critical shortage of men from a strategically important state. In early 1781, Congress issued another levy on men from Pennsylvania with improved, but still stingy, enlistment terms. Continental military officers again struggled to fill the quota. On July 20, Arthur St. Clair suggested to General Washington in a private letter that the soldiers who had been enlisted might be more critical in the north "should Lord Cornwallis return to N. York." One month later, Washington ordered St. Clair to "assemble all the Recruits in the State of Pennsilvania at their respective places of Rendesvous, where they may be properly equiped to march on the shortest notice to the Southward."[2]On September 15, Washington wrote from Williamsburg, Virginia, with barely concealed irritation at both St. Clair, whom he ordered to march south immediately, and the Pennsylvania Assembly, whose low bounties and poor supply allowances, had made recruiting difficult: "Let it not be said that those Troops are kept from Service for Want of a few Articles which they could wish to be furnished with, when other Troops doing Duty in the Field are combatting almost every Distress imaginable, in the Want of almost every Necessary."[3] Washington was likely behind this order of Congress.Despite the urgency of these requests, the final detachment of St. Clair's Pennsylvania troops did not arrive at Yorktown until October 19, 1781, the day the British surrender terms were finalized.[1] Alexander Hamilton to Elizabeth Hamilton, ca. Joseph Des Barres was born in Switzerland in 1721 and educated in Basel before emigrating to England and entering the Royal Military College where he learned engineering and the art of surveying. In 1756, Des Barres was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal American Regiment and despatched to North America. He served in America during the Seven Years War under Colonel Bouquet, Lord Howe and General Amherst, and participated in the Quebec campaign as General Wolfe's engineer. The end of the French and Indian War opened much of Canada to British trade; surveys of the region were immediately ordered, as the waterways were deemed of vital economic importance to the inland fur trade. Des Barres, having proven himself during the war, was selected to survey the coasts of Nova Scotia, at the outset, and eventually much of the coastline of the American colonies. The work was difficult and at times dangerous, but Des Barres persisted at the task and repeatedly rechecked his surveys to ensure their accuracy. Returning to England in 1774, and upon the urging of Lord Howe, publication of Des Barres surveys was begun on a scale not previously attempted in Great Britain. Beginning with his surveys of Nova Scotia, Des Barres over a ten year period would publish his Atlantic Neptune, comprised of maps and views from his own surveys and those of other military officers (including Major Samuel Holland, for example), depicting the entire North American coast, from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. It would prove to be "the most splendid collection of charts, plans and views ever published" (Rich). The publication history of Des Barres's great work is extraordinarily complex. The atlas was published in four sections: Nova Scotia, New England, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the coast from New York to the Gulf of Mexico. The atlas was published in two forms: in large flat volumes with the maps largely unfolded (as here), or as tall volumes with folded maps and plates (the latter being a form more conducive to shipboard use). The four sections were offered for sale both together, and separately. The charts and views within the volumes were sold individually as well. Copies of the Atlantic Neptune are generally found with title pages dated 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780 or 1781. However, these do not necessarily comprise specific editions, due to their bespoke nature and the fact that the contents evolved considerably over the course of publication. Des Barres continually updated his charts and views, yielding an incredible number of variants and states. Perhaps the greatest variations are seen, however, within the views. The views, were not included in all copies of the Neptune, with many extant examples merely a collection of the charts. The views are found as line engravings with elaborate hand colouring, as uncoloured aquatints, or as aquatints printed in sepia. For many of the views, Des Barres reworked the plates over the publication history, adding shading, ships, o [Attributes: Soft Cover]

PRECIS HISTORIQUE Et EXPERIMENTAL Des PHENOMENES ELECTRIQUES, Depuis L'Origine de Cette Decouverte Jusqu'a ce Jour

Paris, 1781. 1st edition (Ronalds Catalogue, p. 475). Mottelay records the publication of this work in 1785 (the implication being it's the title's first publication, though 1785 is the year of the 2nd edition). Bound in a period full leather of speckled calf, with elaborate gilt decorated spine. Edges stained red. Marbled eps. Bit of splay to boards. Tips show some wear. Joints starting @ ends. Withal, a VG copy.. xvi, 742, [2] pp. Printed glosses. Illustrated with 9 folding copperplate engravings, depicting the divers pieces of electrical apparatus of the day (bound, at rear, out of sequence). Head- tailpieces. 8vo: a8 A - 2Z8 3A4. 8" x 5" The author, while studying for his medical degree, attended a course of public lectures given by Abbe Nollet, the tenor of which so inspired Siguad's subsequent interest in, and investigations of, experimental science at the College Louis-le-Grand. In 1760, Siguad succeeded the Abbe Nollet in his chair at Louis-le-Grand, where, along with anatomy & physiology, he continued "those courses in experimental physics that had been taught by his famous predecessor." Siguad's "positive contributions to science were in the area of experimental technique. He is sometimes attributed with the invention of the glass insulator and the circular glass plate (to replace the glass globe) in electrical machines." This particular work written by him slanted more toward the "enlightened layman", rather than offering a rigorous technical treatise for his peers, nevertheless it does provide a significant historical summary on the subject of Electricity, as well as current thoughts of the 18th Century.[DSB].

Expertly bound to style in half russia and period marbled paper covered boards, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, red and black morocco lettering piecesThe eastern Nova Scotia section of Des Barres' masterpiece, The Atlantic Neptune: here with many of the rare views seldom found in copies, and with period hand-colouring throughout. One of the greatest achievements of 18th century cartography, Des Barres charted the Nova Scotia coastline with a degree of accuracy not seem before and with a level of artistry not seen since. A major cartographic landmark and the best depiction of the North American coast during the American Revolution.Joseph Des Barres was born in Switzerland in 1721 and educated in Basel before emigrating to England and entering the Royal Military College where he learned engineering and the art of surveying. In 1756, Des Barres was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal American Regiment and despatched to North America. Perhaps the greatest variations are seen, however, within the views. The views, were not included in all copies of the Neptune, with many extant examples merely a collection of the charts. The views are found as line engravings with elaborate hand colouring, as uncoloured aquatints, or as aquatints printed in sepia. For many of the views, Des Barres reworked the plates over the publication history, adding shading, ships, or in some cases hammering out the copperplates and beginning the engraving entirely anew.It is believed that copies of the Atlantic Neptune were compiled on a bespoke basis, or based on the sheets available at the time of purchase; i.e. that as the charts and views were for sale individually, that the stock of sheets with which to make up copies of the Neptune changed frequently. Furthermore, as Des Barres was continuously re-working plates, some charts and views were not available at all times. During the course of publication, some views were dropped entirely, some views were replaced by others and new charts and views were inserted into copies whenever they were ready regardless of "edition." Copies of the Neptune with similarly dated title pages, therefore, are infrequently comprised of identical contents and no copy of the Atlantic Neptune can possibly be comprised of all known views (unless, of course, views were added as extra-illustrations at a later date). The present second half of Nova Scotia section (i.e. the eastern half, including both the south east and north east coasts, as well as the Gut of Canso and Sable island) includes 33 charts and views, most with period hand colouring. The charts are, without exception, beautifully presented and of an accuracy that was unheard of in the eighteenth century. This section also includes views and coastal profiles. Des Barres wished to give accurate depictions of the towns, harbours and views to be found all along the east coast of North America and he personally executed most of the drawings on which the original engravings were based. The present volume contains some of the most lavish of Des Barres's aquatint engravings. Many of the most interesting points of the entire coast are covered. Of particular interest are the fine views of Sable Island, whose shallow shifting shoals of sand were a graveyard for unwary ships. Des Barres spent two seasons here, and his aquatints show the island, his camps and his team at work. The present collection comprises:1) The South East Coast of Nova Scotia. On four sheets, joined. Stevens 44f.2) Halifax Harbour. On three sheets, joined. Stevens 45i.3) [Plan of Halifax]. Double-page sheet. Stevens 46e. Minor restoration to losses at corners.4) [Six views of Halifax Harbour]. Paris, 1781. Fine. Folio. 12 laid paper leaves hand stitched, paper spine. Title in manuscript on the first leaf, followed by 21 manuscript pages (foliated 1, 2, 2, 3 -- 10). In fine condition with light rubbing to the edges of the first leaf, housed in a period-style quarter leather and cloth box with gilt-stamped rounded-spine and inner chemise. An original manuscript of this celebrated attack on French Finance Minister Jacques Necker, arguably the most powerful man in France before the Revolution. Written surreptitiously by Philippe Henri de Grimoard, an important military officer and trusted counselor to Louis XVI, the letter was published in the guise of an open letter between two prominent intellectuals: from the anti-Enlightenment writer Louis-Antoine Caraccioli to Jean d'Alembert, co-editor of the Encyclopedie. As Director-General of Finance from 1776-1783 Necker controlled all of France's wealth. In February 1781 he published his famous work: Compte rendu au roi the first public accounting of the royal finances of the French monarchy. This, along with his reforming policies, made him many enemies, including Marie Antoinette. The stage was thus set for this "witty and well informed" public attack, in which Necker is made to appear as a kind of magician of politics and finance, capable of "mystifying the whole French nation," and guilty of "suppressions without reimbursements, reforms without profit, loans without limit or measure ... ."As to whether this is the original manuscript or a compositor's copy, we cannot say with certainty. It is neatly written in a beautiful hand on the most expensive paper of the day. We know of only one record of the manuscript, in an 1880 Index to the Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts in the British Museum. An historically important manuscript, housed in a handsome drop-spine box.

». [Attributes: Soft Cover]
