A NEW SYSTEM, OF AN ANALYSIS OF ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY: Wherin an Attempt is made to divest Tradition of Fable; and to reduce the Truth to its Original Purity. In this Work is given an History of the Babylonians, Chaldeans, Egyptians, Canaanites, Helladians, Ionians, Leleges, Dorians, Pelasgi: Also of the Scythæ, Indoscythæ, Ethiopians, Phoenicians. The Whole contains an Account of the principal Events in the first Ages, from the Deluge to the Dispersion: Also of the various Migrations, which ensued, and the Settlements made afterwards in different Parts: Circumstances of great Consequence, which were subsequent to the Gentile History of Moses.

London: Printed for T. Payne ... 1774-6. . 1st Ed. 4to. 3 vols. 26 engraved plates and 4 vignettes, 3 maps including 2 folding. [Vol. 1 lacking half title?]. Some light browning, ex.-libris Stanhope Harvey, old calf, some marking and wear, joints cracked, chipped title labels to spines chipped with some loss. ESTC T88928 (Volumes I & II) and T214664 (Volume III). Jacob Bryant (bap. 1717, d. 1804), antiquary and classical scholar. ODNB ‘... Ironically, Bryant's importance to modern readers lies in the influence he had upon the poet and artist William Blake, who in his own time was generally considered mad. The many plates appearing in [the above work] were prepared and signed by James Basire, a well-known London engraver, to whom Blake was apprenticed from 1771 to 1778. It is possible that several of the plates in Bryant's Mythology were Blake's work, and the final, unsigned one (on the last page of volume three) almost certainly is. In his prose Descriptive Catalogue (1809), written to accompany an exhibition of his art, Blake affirmed that all myths ‘are the same thing, as Jacob Bryant and all antiquaries have proved'. In his long self-illustrated poem Jerusalem (1804–20), Blake also followed Bryant in placing the Erythrean (Red) Sea not surrounding Sinai but in the Indian Ocean. In illustrating the same poem, he depicted the Ark as a crescent moon, just as he had done on the last page of Bryant's Mythology. Blake scholars therefore find Bryant still of some interest ...' Bentley pp.103-4. ‘there are 31 plates in the three volumes of the first edition, all but there of which are signed by Blakes master Basire [our copy is complete as above with 24 plates and vignettes signed by Basire] ... with such a number of plates by Basire, it is virtually certain that Blake engraved at least parts of a few ....'          THE ROYAL AMERICAN MAGAZINE, OR UNIVERSAL REPOSITORY OF INSTRUCTION AND AMUSEMENT FOR OCTOBER, 1774

Boston: Greenleaf's Printing Office, 1774. [2],[363]-386pp. plus engraving. Dbd. Minor foxing and toning. Engraving separately matted. An important issue of this American colonial periodical, as it includes an outstanding political cartoon by the American patriot Paul Revere, commenting on the Quebec Act. The engraving is titled "The Mitred Minuet," and is credited to "P. Revere sc" at lower right. The cartoon shows four Anglican bishops dancing hand-in-hand around a draft of the "Quebec Bill" while Lord Bute, Lord North, another lord, and the devil direct them. The masthead illustration features a metal-type cut also by Revere, depicting an Indian presenting a calumet to "an ill-drawn figure representing the Genius of Knowledge" - Mott. The periodical itself had an interesting history, having been proposed and founded by early American printer Isaiah Thomas in 1773. From Thomas's own THE HISTORY OF PRINTING IN AMERICA: "A prospectus of this work appeared many months before the magazine; but the disordered state of public affairs, and the difficulties which individuals experienced from them, prevented it from being sooner put to press; and after a few numbers had been published, the distress occasioned to the inhabitants of Boston by shutting up and blockading their port, obliged its editor to suspend the publication. The first number for January, 1774, was published at the close of that month...The editor [Isaiah Thomas], after having been at considerable trouble and expense in bringing the work before the public, published it six months, and then was obliged, first, to suspend, and afterward to relinquish it; but Joseph Greenleaf continued the publication until April following, when the war put a period to the magazine. This was the last periodical work published in Boston before the revolution. It had a considerable list of subscribers." A notable issue of a legendary Revolutionary-period magazine, with the Revere engraving (often lacking). All original Paul Revere engravings are now rare on the marketplace. EVANS 13590.          AN ASTRONOMICAL DIARY: OR, ALMANACK FOR THE YEAR OF CHRISTIAN AERA, 1775.

Boston: John Kneeland, [1774]. - [24]pp. Dbd. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. An important Revolutionary almanac. The titlepage has a large woodcut entitled "The virtuous patriot at the hour of death," and the first four pages contain "An address to the inhabitants of Boston," in which Low rails against the British. Speaking to British-occupied Boston, he writes, "[Your countrymen] are sensible the heavy hand of power under which you are now groaning is designed only as a prelude to the utter abolishment of American freedom." He goes on to decry the Intolerable Acts as a prelude to an era of American slavery to Britain, and to write prophetically: "My dear brethren, the destiny of America seems to be suspended on the present controversy; and it is on your fidelity, firmness, and good conduct, for which you have so remarkably signalized yourselves on all occasions, that a happy issue of it in a great measure depends." Just months after this almanac was published, the first shots of the Revolution would be fired at Lexington and Concord. EVANS 13384. DRAKE 3241.

         Joseph Banks Esq

      W. Dickinson, 30 January, London 1774 - Mezzotint portrait, 510 x 370 mm.; a very good impression, mounted and framed. In this fine mezzotint Joseph Banks " the father of Australia" is shown sitting confidently at his desk, surrounded by the accoutrements of his science: books, papers, and a prominently placed world globe. This image is based on the portrait painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1772-3, when Banks was at the height of his fame after returning triumphant from Cook's first voyage and the discovery of the east coast of Australia. His ambitions and achievements are neatly captured in the prominently placed Latin tag, "cras ingens iterabimus æquor" (Horace: "tomorrow we will be back on the vast ocean", and an intriguing choice as the engraving was published at much the same time as Banks withdrew from Cook's second voyage).Joseph Banks was only twenty-eight or twenty-nine when this engraving was made by William Dickinson in the latter half of 1773. It was the same year that Dickinson first began to publish his own prints, after a lengthy apprenticeship and association with the painter Robert Edge Pine, at whose house in St Martin's Lane he lodged between 1768 and 1771. His relationship with Reynolds was evidently good: this was the first of no less than twenty-two mezzotints after Reynolds that he completed and this very rare and fine image of Banks is one of the most celebrated.

EARLY EDITION, first issued in 1770, of this classic that opens with the discovery of North America, then thought of as the New World, while looking for passage to India. This edition was edited and improved over previous editions. The work is embellished with 7 historiated “frontispiece” elaborately engraved plates, located at the beginning of the narrative, show indigenous peoples in natural settings. The 4 folding engraved maps depict the entire world, North America (including Hudson Bay and Greenland to the north and reaching as far south as the Gulf of Mexico, and east to the western part of Africa), and the Gulf of Mexico region (reaching to the northern part of S. America). 3 additional maps repeat three of the original maps. “The book examines the East Indies, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The final chapter comprises theory around the future of Europe as a whole. Raynal also examines commerce, religion, slavery, and other popular subjects, all with a perspective from the French Enlightenment.” â€" Wikip. Born April 12, 1713, at Saint-Geniez in Rouergue, Raynal received a Jesuit education at Pà zenas. “Collaboration was crucial to Raynal’s greatest achievement as an editor and author. It was Raynal, after all, who shepherded into print one of the eighteenth century’s most influential collective efforts, the massive Histoire philosophique et politique des à tablissements et du commerce des Europà ens dans les deux Indes, a philosophical and political history . Printed in three “authorized” versions edited by Raynal (1770, 1774, and 1780), the Histoire des deux Indes was the work of a score of authors, among them Denis Diderot, Jean le Rond d’Alembert, Charles Pinot-Duclos, and Paul-Henri Thiry, The Baron d’Holbach (1723-1789). Diderot and d’Holbach denounced the tyranny of despotism, which touched a nerve from the French monarchy, resulting in the book being condemned by the French parliament in 1781. Original full mottled calf, ornate gilt spines, dual leather gilt-stamped spine labels; some wear to extremities. Unidentified rubber-stamps (on half-title or titles) [purple: feathered crown, over two crossing feather pens, a ribbon draped over a rod, with the word: ----bekholes(?)]. Very good set, lacking the engraved portrait of the author, but complete with all the text and 7 plates and 7 maps. "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest" - Denis Diderot. EARLY EDITION, first issued in 1770, of this classic that opens with the discovery of North America, then thought of as the New World, while looking for passage to India. This edition was edited and improved over previous editions. The work is embellished with 7 historiated "frontispiece" elaborately engraved plates, located at the beginning of the narrative, show indigenous peoples in natural settings. "The book examines the East Indies, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The final chapter comprises theory around the future of Europe as a whole. Raynal also examines commerce, religion, slavery, and other popular subjects, all with a perspective from the French Enlightenment." - Wikip. Born April 12, 1713, at Saint-Geniez in Rouergue, Raynal received a Jesuit education at Pézenas. "Collaboration was crucial to Raynal's greatest achievement as an editor and author. It was Raynal, after all, who shepherded into print one of the eighteenth century's most influential collective efforts, the massive Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes, a philosophical and political history ... Printed in three "authorized" versions edited by Raynal (1770, 1774, and 1780), the Histoire des deux Indes was the work of a score of authors, among them Denis Diderot, Jean le Rond d'Alembert, Charles Pinot-Duclos, and Paul-Henri Thiry, The Baron d'Holbach (1723-1789). Diderot and d'Holbach denounced the tyranny of despotism, which touched a nerve from the French monarchy, resulting in the book being condemned by the French parliament in 1781. Raynal was exiled from France and in fact an order was issued for his arrest even though his name did not appear on the first edition of the work. The Histoire des deux Indes attempted a comprehensive history of the contemporary European colonial enterprise in the Far East and the Atlantic world. Beginning with the fifteenth-century Portuguese explorations and culminating with a sweeping analysis of all colonial powers in the eighteenth century, the Histoire laid bare the progress of conquest for each European nation and its trading companies. Often the 'progress' translated into the abuses made possible by the disproportionate use of force and state-sponsored trading monopolies. No colonial power was spared..." - Bill Marshall, ?Cristina Johnston, France and The Americas: Culture, Politics, And History, ABC-CLIO, (2005), p. 978. "Diderot was one of the most forceful critics of European colonization. In his contributions to Raynal's Histoire des deux Indes, he challenges the view that indigenous people benefit from European civilization and argues that the European colonists are the uncivilized ones. He claims that culture ("national character") helps to inculcate morality and reinforces norms of respect, but these norms tend to dissipate when the individual is far from his country of origin. According to Diderot, colonial empires frequently become the sites of extreme brutality because the colonists are far away from legal institutions and informal sanctions and this weakens the habits of restraint, exposing natural man's full instinct for violence (Muthu 2003)." - Margaret Kohn, "Colonialism," Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.          Powder horn used by Minuteman Oliver Buttrick at the Battle of Concord, April 19, 1775

Concord, Massachusetts, October 1774 - AN ICONIC RELIC OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Minuteman Oliver Buttrick carried this historic powder horn at the Battle of Concord, the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. The British government in Boston learned early in April 1775 that rebel colonists had hidden arms and gunpowder in Concord. On the morning of April 19 an expedition of 700 British army regulars marched from Boston to Concord to seize and destroy these arms. Paul Revere and other riders spread the alarm among local militias. When the British reached Lexington, the minuteman militia, not yet assembled in force, fell back. The British regulars then moved on to Concord, where a large contingent of minutemen was assembled. A formidable force held the North Bridge in Concord defying the outnumbered British. The confrontation erupted into gunfire which became known as “the shot heard round the world.” Oliver Buttrick, age eighteen, was one of seven in the Buttrick family to join with other minutemen in this historic conflict. Oliver’s uncle, Major John Buttrick led the advance at the Old North Bridge that day. Oliver was in David Brown’s Company and served alongside his brother William, who was killed three weeks later at Bunker Hill. Fellow minutemen that day included Abiel Buttrick, Daniel Buttrick, Tilly Buttrick, Willard Buttrick and John Buttrick, Jr., a 14-year old fifer. See George Tolman, The Concord Minute Men (1901). The October 1774 date on this evocative powder horn is highly significant. Unrest in the colonies dating to the 1760s had increased with British occupation and seizure of political power, and by 1774 rebellion was at a fever pitch. In October military governor Thomas Gage dissolved the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Led by John Hancock, the now extralegal body nonetheless met, assuming control of the province outside of Boston, collecting taxes, raising a militia, and authorizing the procurement of arms. That very month 17-year-old Oliver Buttrick marked his ownership of this powder horn, which was to be used to defend his countrymen the following April. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire in iconic object from the birth of our nation. This powder horn is among the few existing objects that can be directly associated with the first battle for American independence. This is believed to be the only colonial horn used at this historic confrontation to ever be offered for sale. We are aware of no other object used by a minuteman at the Battle of Concord being sold at auction in many years. Manuscript on vellum ownership label “Oliver Buttrick, OCTR. AD 1774” under glass lens (inked vellum under a glass lens is a rare form of decoration seen on only a few other 18th-century powder horns). Very good original condition with original surface, minor cracking and chipping near lip. Two well patinated chips to wood bezel; vertical cracked to glass cover lens. Original wire loops are still present with smooth iron patina. Inquire for more details.

In 1770, in his capacity as an official of the department of mines and the mint, Von Born made a lengthy tour through the southern realms of the Austrian Empire. At that time, this encompassed the mineral rich lands of Hungary and Transylvania. His keen observations of the regions he travelled through were recorded in a series of letters Von Born sent to the Swedish mineralogist Johann Jacob [Jakob] Ferber. These letters contain a vibirant, warm description of the people encountered as well as numerous intersperced accounts about the mineralogy and mining of the area. They also show Von Born to be an expert in his profession. Ferber after having recieved the complete series of letters, decided their content should be shared with a wider audiance. Therefore, he undertook to edit them, and see to their publication as the present work.       Boston: John Kneeland, 1774. [24]pp. 12mo. Dbd. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. An important Revolutionary almanac. The titlepage has a large woodcut entitled "The virtuous patriot at the hour of death," and the first four pages contain "An address to the inhabitants of Boston," in which Low rails against the British. Addressing British-occupied Boston, he writes: "[Your countrymen] are sensible the heavy hand of power under which you are now groaning is designed only as a prelude to the utter abolishment of American freedom." He goes on to decry the Intolerable Acts as a prelude to an era of American slavery to Britain, and to write prophetically: "My dear brethren, the destiny of America seems to be suspended on the present controversy; and it is on your fidelity, firmness, and good conduct, for which you have so remarkably signalized yourselves on all occasions, that a happy issue of it in a great measure depends." Just months after this almanac was published, the first shots of the Revolution would be fired at Lexington and Concord. EVANS 13384. DRAKE 3241.

Modena, per G. Vincenzi, 1819. Pp. 59 (1). Unito a: MORO MATTEO. Guida per conservarsi in salute e vivere lungamente. Cremona, dalla tipografia prov. de' fratelli Manini, 1820. Pp. 75 (1).
