THE AMERICAN QUERIST: OR, SOME QUESTIONS PROPOSED RELATIVE TO THE PRESENT DISPUTES BETWEEN GREAT BRITAIN, AND HER AMERICAN COLONIES. BY A NORTH-AMERICAN. WE ARE NOT TO THINK EVERY CLAMOROUS HARANGUER, OR EVERY SPLENETIC REPINER AGAINST A COURT, IS THEREFORE A PATRIOT. BISHOP BERKLEY

Printed by James Rivington, New-York 1774 - [2], 31, [1 blank] pp. Lacking the half title, else Very Good in modern cloth with printed paper spine label, James Copley bookplate on the front pastedown. Chandler's anonymously written pamphlet kindled the anger of American Patriots. At the base of the title page Rivington has printed: "This pamphlet, on the eighth day of September last, was, in full conclave of the Sons of Liberty in New-York, committed to the flames by the hands of their common executioner; as it contains some queries they cannot, and others they will not answer!" The pamphlet is styled "Tenth Edition" on the title page; but, according to Adams, it is the second edition, as well as the first to identify Rivington as the printer, and the first to print the interesting note at the base of the title page. Chandler, Connecticut-born Episcopal priest and Yale graduate, was devoted to the interests of the Church of England in the American Colonies. Proof that politics follows religion, he bitterly attacked the Continental Congress and America's growing revolutionary inclinations in the 'American Querist.' He would cast his lot with England, emigrating in May 1775. "Although he had advised the repeal of the Stamp Act, he was as ardent a Loyalist as churchman, and the events of the next few years moved him to vigorous protest against the drift toward revolution. The occurrences of April 1775 were too much for his Loyalist fervor, and he departed for England the following month" [DAB]. What Chandler "and other articulate defenders of the status quo saw as the final threat was not so much the replacement of one set of rulers by another as the triumph of ideas and attitudes incompatible with the stability of any standing order, any establishment" [Bailyn, Ideological Origins of the American Revolution 318]. The pamphlet takes the form of one hundred rhetorical questions, reflecting Chandler's positions on the split with England, the North American Charters granted by the Crown, the Stamp Act, and the unrest in the American Colonies: "Whether the disorder of the colonies, to speak in language taken from animal bodies, be not of the feverish kind, as it is attended with an irregular high pulse, and discovers, in some parts, a dangerous swelling and inflammation; and whether it has not been occasioned, in a great measure, by their own imprudence and intemperance?" [No. 10]. Some later Queries refer to specific occurrences: "Whether the several colonies, by having chosen delegates to represent them at the congress, have not taken the matter in dispute out of the hands of the people; and whether those, who, notwithstanding, still endeavour farther to inflame the passions of the populace, already intoxicated with a few magical sounds, are not to be considered and treated as incendiaries, scattering abroad the firebrands of faction, in order to bring on the conflagration of their country?" [No. 89]. Howes C753. Adams, American Independence 106b. Evans 13221. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Självporträtt i blå barett.

Olja på duk. Signerad »JGS» (inristat i den våta färgen). »Själfporträtt af Professor Sandberg» skrivet a tergo. 28 × 24 cm. Senare hos Sonja Hylén (1914-2008).Utställd: Konstnärshuset, Stockholm, Gustaf Fredriksons tavelsamling, januari 1926, kat. nr 87.Litteratur: Mauritz Beijerstein, Johan Gustaf Sandberg 1782-1854 (1928), kat. nr 118 (s. 192). Nationalmuseum äger detsamma i freskoteknik» (s. 4). (1) Gustaf Uddgren, Gustaf Fredrikson.         A New Voyage Round the World in the Years 1768, 1769, 1770 and 1771 (Cook's Voyages)

James Rivington, New York, NY 1774 - Hardcover, Vol 2 only, bound in full leather. The rare and important first American edition of Cook's first voyage -- Undertaken by order of his Present Majesty, performed by Captain James Cooke, in the Ship Endeavour, drawn up from his own Journal and from the Papers of Joseph Banks, Esq., F.R.S., and published by the special direction of the right honourable the Lords of the Admiralty, by John Hawkesworth, L.L.D. and late director of the Eat India Company. One of the first American books - if not the first - to publish details of the Australian east coast. Cook's first voyage was an expedition to the South Pacific, especially to look for evidence of the "unknown land" of Australia. Cook left from England, rounded Cape Horn, first stop Tahiti, then onward to various islands in the South Pacific, claiming them for England. He then reached New Zealand, only the second westerners to reach it, then on to Australia, barely escaping a wreak on the Great Barrier Reef, finally to Batavia in the East Indies and back around the Cape to home. Some of the places and things touched on in the narrative include Batavia, the Hottentots, Java, Savu, New Zealand, Prince's Island and much more. Includes descriptions of the men and women they saw, and other observations of the inhabitants of the various places visited. Originally a set of two volumes - this is Vol II. Missing the frontispiece illustration (which was engraved by Paul Revere). The two front free endpapers are detached (but present), former owner's name top of title page, bookplate of Will Thompson Esq on the inside front cover plus other markings (see photos). Leather good, firmly bound. Foxing and browning of pages. Please read description closely as to condition, and feel free to contact me with any questions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

IN RARE ORIGINAL BOARDS UNCUT. Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield KG PC was a British statesman, man of letters, and great wit. As a politician and statesman, his fame rests upon his short, but brilliant, administration of Ireland as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. By many accounts he was a selfish, calculating and contemptuous man despite brilliant talents and admirable training. Horace Walpole said that he, who had heard nearly all the great orators of the time, preferred a speech of Chesterfield to that of any other. Yet Boswell reported that the poet Samuel Johnson pointedly said, "This man I thought had been a Lord among wits; but I find he is only a wit among Lords!" Despite having been an accomplished essayist and epigrammatist in his time, his literary reputation, as a narrative writer, derives from 'Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman'. The impoverished widow of Chesterfield's illegitimate son, Eugenia Stanhope, was the first to publish the book, which comprises a thirty-year correspondence in more than four hundred letters; begun in the 1737-38 period and continued until the death of his correspondent, Philip Stanhope, in 1768. As a handbook for worldly success in the 18th century, the Letters to His Son give perceptive and nuanced advice for how a gentleman should interpret the social codes that are manners. His perceptiveness is evidenced in quotations such as these: "Sex: the pleasure is momentary, the position ridiculous and the expense damnable"; "The world is a country which nobody ever yet knew by description; one must travel through it one's self to be acquainted with it."; "I recommend you to take care of the minutes, for the hours will take care of themselves.

Liber Niger Scaccarii, nec non Wilhelmi Worcestrii Annales Rerum Anglicarum, cum praefatione et appendice Thomae Hearnii. editio altera.

Apud Benj. White, Londini [London] 1774 - 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [iv], xliv, 396, *397-486; [iv], [397]-822, [26]. Near-contemporary marbled calf by Kalthoeber, with his sticker in vol. 1, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule and small floral cornerpieces, flat spines divided by greek key rolls gilt between rope and spray rolls, second and third compartments gilt-lettered direct, the others with central wheel tools and small dots all gilt, matchingly marbled edges and endpapers. Some spotting, occasional small paper flaws. A little rubbed at extremities, leather of spine slightly dry, a short crack to foot of front joint of vol. 1, a touch of wear to corners. Bookplate of George Gostling to front pastedown of vol. 1. Occasional pencil notes and underlining. A very good example of a Kalthoeber binding in marbled calf - taste of the period more often called for red morocco - with his distinctive ticket on the endpaper of the first volume. The text is the 'second edition' of Hearne's edition, being in fact a reissue of the sheets of the second edition (1771) with cancel title-pages. The work, known as the 'Black Book of the Exchequer' (after the colour of its binding; a larger similar volume is the 'Red Book') is a compilation of treasury records and was first published in 1728 as part of Hearne's enormous effort to produce accurate editions of the primary sources of British history.         Voyages dans la Mer du Sud, par les Espagnols et les Hollandois. Taduit de l'anglois

Saillant & Nyon and Pissot, Paris 1774 - xvi+502+[2 dedication] pages with tables, three folding maps of Robert de Vaugondy and engraved by E. Dussyat at back and ribbon book mark. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") bound in full period leather with five raised bands with red label and gilt lettering to spine with gilt decorative vignettes to spine compartments. Covers with gilt ruled edges. (Sabin 18344; Du Rietz 246; Hill 392) First French edition. Alexander Dalrymple was a Scottish geographer and the first Hydrographer of the British Admiralty. He was the main proponent of the theory that there existed a vast undiscovered continent in the South Pacific, Terra Australis Incognita. He produced thousands of nautical charts, mapping a remarkable number of seas and oceans for the first time, and contributing significantly to the safety of shipping. His theories prompted a number of expeditions in search of this mythical land, until James Cook's second journey (1772–1775) led to the conclusion that, if it did exist, it was further south than the 65° line of latitude South. When translating some Spanish documents captured in the Philippines in 1762, Dalrymple had found Torres's testimony proving a passage south of New Guinea; he now showed Torres's route of 1606 on a chart in his An Account of the Discoveries Made in The South Pacifick Ocean, Previous to 1764 (London, 1767). In this work he declared his belief in the existence of a great southern continent, extending into low latitudes in the Pacific; more important, he brought Torres's route to the notice of Joseph Banks. In 1768 it was suggested that Dalrymple should lead the expedition being sent to the Pacific to observe the transit of Venus but his insistence that he should command the vessel was contrary to Admiralty regulations. However, his book provided James Cook with valuable knowledge for his successful navigation of Torres Strait. In his major work, An Historical Collection of the Several Voyages and Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean (London, 1770), Dalrymple continued to insist that a great southern continent existed. By circumnavigating New Zealand, Cook on his first voyage had imposed severe limitations on this hypothesis, and on his second voyage in 1772-75, he completely disproved it; nevertheless Dalrymple's writings had done much to maintain official interest in Pacific exploration. Leipzig: S.L. Crusius, 1774.First edition, and very rare, of the author's first book in which Werner developed a completely new system for the description of minerals. Werner (1749-1817), known as the "father of historical geology," was the first to understand that the correct classification of minerals should be based on their chemical composition and that minerals could be identified by their external characteristics. In this work, "Werner gave an unprecedented number of external characteristics with definitions, usually accompanied by homely examples which could be understood by both the layman and the natural philosopher…[it] continued to be an important work into the nineteenth century."-D.S.B., XIV, p. 257.The present work by Werner was enormously influential for mineralogists and geologists on the Continent and in England.         The Theory of Moral Sentiments. . . To which is added a dissertation on the origin of languages.

London: printed for W. Strahan, J. & F. Rivington, W. Johnston, T. Longman, and T. Cadell, and W. Creech, 1774. 4th Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (208 x 126 mm). Contemporary calf, spine with rich gilt decoration (boards and spine rubbed, spine label gone, hinges repaired, extremities rubbed, spine ends scuffed). Little age-toning of text, occasional minor foxing, but generally clean and unmarked. A very good wide-margined copy in original binding. ---- ESTCT95116; Alston III, 825; Kress 5815; Goldsmith 9537 (both for 1st ed.) - THE VERY RARE FOURTH EDITION. Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments is drawn from his course of lectures while he was a professor of philosophy at Glasgow Univrsity. "The work received wide acclaim and so impressed the stepfather of the young duke of Buccleuch that he invited Smith to become the duke's tutor, with the promise of a pension for life. . . The greater part of the Theory of Moral Sentiments is an account of moral psychology. . . The mainstay of Smith's moral psychology is sympathy. . . Smith characterizes the mechanism of sympathy in this way: 'Whatever is the passion which arises from any object in the person principally concerned, an analogous emotion springs up at the thought of this situation, in the breast of every attentive spectator'. . . Smith argues that if the appearance of grief or joy, for example, arouses similar feelings in us, it is because these feelings suggest to us the general idea of some good or evil that has befallen the person in whom we observe them" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy VII, pp. 461ff). "The Theory of Moral Sentiments was [first] published in April 1759 and at once brought Smith something more than local fame. It was hailed by David Hume in typical ironic manner: 'I proceed to tell you the melancholy news', he wrote from London, 'that your book has been very unfortunate: for the public seem disposed to applaud it extremely'" (Mossner. Adam Smith: The Biographical Approach, p. 12). This edition is exceptionally rare. We can only trace a single copy sold at auction in the past 50 years (Sotheby's, London, 1973). - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.

Paris:: Chez Durand, 1774, 1760, 1777., 1774. 3 parts bound in 1. Sm. 8vo. xii, 251, [1]; [ii], xii, 284; xvi, 295, [1] pp. 12 plates. Early half gilt-stamped calf, marbled boards, gilt-stamped red & dark green calf spine labels, raised bands; lower cover rubbed. Very good+. RARE COMPLETE WORK WITH ALL THREE PARTS. Third & first editions. The Lettres, intended as a refutation of certain theories of Benjamin Franklin contain "a wealth of counterexamples which drew their strength from Franklin's occasional obscurities, imprecisions, exaggerations, and inappropriate appeals to traditional effluvial models." - Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Volume X, p. 147. "Born at Pimprez in France, Nollet was one of the great popularizers of the new electrical science in the salons and at the court of 18th-century France. He had collaborated with Charles Dufay in the period 1730-32 and tended to follow him in his electrical theory. Nollet saw electricity as a fluid, subtle enough to penetrate the densest of bodies. In 1746 he first formulated his theory of simultaneous 'affluences and effluences' in which he assumed that bodies have two sets of pores in and out of which electrical effluvia might flow. He was later involved with Benjamin Franklin in a dispute over the nature of electricity. After the discovery of the Leyden jar (a device for storing electrical charge) by Pieter van Musschenbroek in 1745, Nollet arranged some spectacular demonstrations of its power. He once gave a shock to 180 royal guards and, even more dramatically, joined 700 monks in a circle to a Leyden jar with quite startling results. Nollet also contributed to the theory of sound when he showed in 1743 that sound carried in water (he had taken care to expel the dissolved air from the water first)." - Oxford Reference. Chapters include "On the Nature of Electric Material", "On the Analogy of Thunder with electricity", "Extracts from letters of M. Villette", "To Serve as a Response to M. Suhm and bears his name on the title-page "Havniae 1787 - Suhm". ¶ Scarce first edition, P.F. Suhm's copy, of Nieburh's great travel account of Arabia. Like his "Beschribung von Arabien", his "Reisebeschreibung von Arabien" "provided a mass of new geographical, regional, and historical information... Among is many exact maps and plans, the map of the Red Sea and of Yemen served as the most reliable information for more than 50 years.""Despite its tragic course, the expedition was a complete success with regard to its scientific and scholarly results. It was especially due to Niebuhr's efforts to preserve and continue his and his collegues' , that the Royal Danish Library was eventually equipped with a host of oriental manuscripts, maps, and drawings, as well as many botanical and zoological specimens... It was Niebuhr who edited and published Forskåll's Flora Aegyptiaco-Arabica (1775) and Descriptiones Animalium (1775), together with the drawings of bauerfeind. In 1772 he had alredy published his systematic and geographically organized beschreibung von Arabien, which was followed between 1774 and 1778 by the first two volume of his three-volume chronologically arranged Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien. (the item offered, the third volume was published many years later, 1837). Both works, written in a clear and sober language and illustrated with numerous precise drawings, maps, and plans, provided a mass of new geographical, regional, and historical information...
