A View of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the English Government in Bengal: Including a reply to misrepresentations of Mr. Bolts, and other writers.

London: Printed for J. Nourse, Brotherton and Sewell, G. Robinson, and T. Evans, 1772 - Quarto (264 x 205 mm). Contemporary quarter calf, red label lettered in gilt and black label with gilt-stamped deer ornament to spine, gilt floral motifs to compartments of spine, marbled sides, white corners. Small ink gift inscription to pastedown, some shaved contemporary annotations. Joints starting at foot, covers rubbed, extremities worn. A very good copy. First edition. Harry Verelst (1734–1785) succeeded Robert Clive as Governor of Bengal in 1767 and held the post until his resignation in December 1769. Verelst's policy with regard to Bengal was to maintain Clive's dual system, upholding the native government under East India Company control rather than fully asserting British sovereignty. Verelst found he lacked the authority of Clive, and under his governorship, and after his return to Britain, he found that his and Clive's governance of the province was being openly criticised. The most notable attack was by William Bolts, a junior merchant in the East India Company, who publicly denounced both Clive and Verelst and their supposedly venal governments in his 1772 work Considerations on Indian Affairs. The present work was Verelst's attempt to counter Bolts and other critics' writings and to give a defence of his and Clive's administrations, alongside affirming the necessity of the dual system and the inappropriateness of directly applying British laws. The work has a lengthy appendix of government papers and letters which the author believed vindicated his claims. With the bookplate of James Amyatt (1734–1813), Captain in the East India Company, free merchant in India, and Member of Parliament for Southampton from 1774 to 1806.       1772 - First collected edition. 8vo. xii, 402pp. Fine copy in contemporary calf, gilt spine and label (slight cracking to joints). This edition is without the mezzotint frontispiece.London: by W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, sold by J. Dodsley. This collection was published two years after Akenside's death, and was edited by his friend and executor, the Right Hon. Jeremiah Dyson. A quarto edition was issued simultaneously. Akenside's reputation as a poet rests largely on ?The Pleasure of Imagination?, begun when he was only 17. Dodsley paid him £120 for it, after Pope's reassurance that ?this is no everyday writer.? After the poem was published in January 1744, Akenside devoted himself increasingly to the study and practice of medicine. He was supported by Jeremiah Dyson, who enabled him to live ?incomparably well? Though an eminent physician, he ?shocked his contemporaries by his brutal roughness and cruelty to the poor? (DNB). Akenside continued to produce the odd poem, and unwisely remodelled his 'Pleasure of the Imagination' in 1757. In this volume both the original and 'enlarged' versions are printed, along with his 'Hymn to the Naiads' and a selction of Odes and Inscriptions.Provenance: Francis Thornhill Baring (bookplate).         La Salameide poemetto giocoso con le note

Appresso Guglielmo Zerletti, 1772. In 8vo (cm 21,5); cartonato coevo colorato (minime mancanze e spellature); antiporta incisa, pp. (10), cxxxv, (3). Titolo inciso con vignetta in rame al centro. Vignetta in rame all'inizio del primo canto.

Lisbon, Regia Officina Typografica, 1772. - Small 4°, recent full antique sheep (a few minor scratches to covers), red leather label, gilt letter. Woodcut royal portuguese arms on title-page, woodcut initial. Title-page slightly soiled. Otherwise, crisp and in fine condition. 66 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. Written in praise of José de Seabra da Silva, with copious praise, too, for the Marques de Pombal. Seabra da Silva had served as Procurador da Coroa and was Ministro d'Estado under Pombal, until he fell out of favor (supposedly after revealing a royal confidence) and was exiled to Africa. He was recalled by D. Maria I and served as Ministro dos Negocios do Reino until the regency of D. João, when he once again fell into disgrace. He died in 1813. The Deducção chronologica, Lisbon 1767, has Seabra da Silva's name on the title, but is often considered to be the work of the Marques de Pombal. Silva e Veiga discusses the Deducção on p. 39 and following of this work.Silva e Veiga was a judge in the Relação of Rio de Janeiro, and later in Oporto. He was murdered in 1809 by a mob who thought he was a French sympathizer.*** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 892. Innocêncio V, 439; on Seabra, see II, 130 and V, 121.

Becker, 104 ; Albert et al., 578 : "Desmonceaux advocated extraction of the clear lens for relief of high-grade myopia ; he did not, however, perform the procedure himself.". - - -Desmonceaux is recognized as an early exponent of extraction of the transparent lens in high-grade myopia. Desmonceaux has often been improperly credited with being the first to propose this procedure. In actuality it was Joseph Higgs of Birmingham who first proposed this procedure in 1745. Haller mentioned extraction of the lens for this purpose but made no claim to have actually performed the operation. It seems likely that Baron Wenzel performed the first reclination and extraction of the lens as a means of relief of high-grade myopia sometime prior to 1775 at the suggestion of Father Desmonceaux.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Memoirs of the Year Two Thousand Five Hundred, Volume 1 (translation of: L'an deux mille quatre cent quarante. reve s'il en fut jamais)

      W. Wilson, Dublin 1772 - An exceedingly rare imprint of this utopian novel, first published in French in 1771. This edition was published in Dublin in 1772, and cannot be found in OCLC (the first edition in English is listed in OCLC as a London imprint in 1772: 2 vol. G. Robinson). This is a utopian novel set in the year 2440. Book block only, lacking boards, but majority of leather spine strip still present, with raised bands; binding of book block still sound. 6 3/8 x 4 inches, 184 pp. Mild dampstaing near spine. Otherwise, pages clean. This is volume 1 only (but volume 2 is available to read online (h t t p s : / / a r c h i v e . o r g /details/memoirsofyeartwo02merc --- without the spaces). Rare indeed. "Mercier's L'An 2440, rêve s'il en fut jamais (literally, "The Year 2440: A Dream If Ever There Was One"; translated into English as Memoirs of the Year Two Thousand Five Hundred [sic]; and into German as Das Jahr zwey tausend vier hundert und vierzig: Ein Traum aller Träume) is a utopian novel set in the year 2440. An extremely popular work (it went through twenty-five editions after its first appearance in 1770), the work describes the adventures of an unnamed man, who, after engaging in a heated discussion with a philosopher friend about the injustices of Paris, falls asleep and finds himself in a Paris of the future. Darnton writes that "despite its self-proclaimed character of fantasy.L'An 2440 demanded to be read as a serious guidebook to the future. It offered an astonishing new perspective: the future as a fait accompli and the present as a distant past. Who could resist the temptation to participate in such a thought experiment? And once engaged in it, who could fail to see that it exposed the rottenness of the society before his eyes, the Paris of the eighteenth century?" Mercier's hero notes everything that catches his fancy in this futuristic Paris. Public space and the justice system have been reorganized. Its citizens' garb is comfortable and practical. Hospitals are effective and based on science. There are no monks, priests, prostitutes, beggars, dancing masters (i.e. teachers), pastry chefs, standing armies, slavery, arbitrary arrest, taxes, guilds, foreign trade, coffee, tea or tobacco and all useless and immoral previously-written literature has been destroyed. Mercier's future is not wholly utopian. The extremes of wealth and poverty have been abolished; nevertheless, the poor still exist. There is little economic development and the population of France has increased only by 50%." (1722RO089) [Attributes: First Edition]

VII-VIII rear joint with kozo repair. Very handsome set. FRENCH EDITION, translated from the Italian by Belletier, with the very rare eighth volume being the biography of the author. Algarotti was every much the popularizer and educator to the public (especially women). An excellent example is his work, Neutonianismo per le dame, ("Newtonism for Ladies"), issued in 1737, which gave a non-mathematical explanation of Newton's philosophy of science, in particular his optics, a history of physics, an explanation of the hypothesis of Descartes on the nature of light and colors. He continued with an exposition on the general principles of optics, the eye and vision, and treatments of Descartes and the French Cartesian Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) on the nature of light and colors. Vol. I, Chap. III & IV, are focused on the system of Newton's optics. Chap. V deals with the principles of universal attraction and its application to optical science. Chap. VI contains refutations on the theory of colors and Newton's theories. With the conclusion of vol. I he adds an explanation of the function of the eyes & vision, being that what ones sees is reversed in the brain and how seeing any object is a function of two eyes witnessing a single object. He finishes vol. I with a letter to Fontenelle and the subject of his own treatise on Newtonism for Ladies. / Count Francesco Algarotti (1712–1764), Venetian polymath, philosopher, poet, essayist, anglophile, art critic and art collector. He was "one of the first Esprits cavaliers of the age," a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and music and a friend of most of the leading authors of his times: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens, Pierre-Louis de Maupertuis and the atheist Julien Offray de La Mettrie.
