Medicina ex pulsu, sive systema doctrine sphygmicae

Vienna: Rudolph Graeffer, 1770. Very good. 8vo. xxxvi, [4], 268, [22] pp. + folding plate. Uncut and largely unopened copy in original "temporary" Austrian boards covered with decorative paper, some light chipping to spine and hinges, first twelve leaves with faded water-stain along lower corners. Preserved in a black cloth folding case. An extraordinary medical book artifact: this volume survives in completely original condition, unopened, and preserved in the original "temporary" boards; medical books of this early date almost never survive in "as issued" state. First edition of this thorough treatise on the pulse, in which the doctrines of Bordeu and Fouquet in particular are addressed. Wetsch (1737-1779), an Austrian by birth, was greatly interested in "organic pulses," i.e. the affections of each organ to produce a different kind of pulse, by which they may be recognized. In 1730 Solano de Luque, a Spanish physician, published a novel treatise on the subject, the "Lapis Lydius Apollinis." The work was hailed by Michel, Bordeau, and Fouquet, who continued Solano's work and made important contributions. Wetsch embraced these improvements, and even went to Paris to learn from the authors themselves. There Wetsch studied medicine and focused especially on physiology and pathology. Six years after the present work was published, he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Moscow. Literature: Waller 10258. Hirsch V, 915. Lesky 709. Blake 487 (Prague edition, published in the same year). See the long contemporary review of the "Medicina ex pulsu" in Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek (1770), Vol. 14, 1. Stuck, pp. 355-358. PROVENANCE: Bookplate inside upper cover of M.R. Heynsius van den Berg (1882-1969), medical doctor and director of the Consultatie Bureau van de Amsterdamse Vereniging tot Bestrijding van Tuberculose.

Rara seconda edizione accresciuta. Cfr. Iccu; Melzi, Dizionario opere anonime, II, p. 444; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II,2, p. 750, ove si menziona come reale luogo di stampa Coira, Società tipografica..

Additis adnotationibus quibus plurimarum plantarum vires indicantur.

typis Simonis Tissi,, Belluni, 1770 - Cm. 29,5, pp. (4) 400. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

La navigation, poëme.Paris, Giguet and Michaud, 1806. 8vo. With an engraved frontispiece and an engraved page plate showing the wreck of La Perouse. Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco, with the arms of Tsar Alexander I on the front and back boards, including his imperial monogram, gold-tooled spine, boards edges and turn ins, gilt edges.

Beddie 3825; Ferguson 427aa; Kroepelien 410; Sabin 22880. Second edition of a detailed epic poem by Joseph-Alphonse Esménard (1770-1811), celebrating the history of navigation, in a beautiful binding richly gold-tooled red morocco with the arms of Imperator Alexander I (1777-1825). Esménard's poem shows his broad knowledge of the voyages of the 18th century. He mentions Bougainville, makes a glancing reference to Malespine, Biron, et Wallis, et Surville, but he reserves most of his attention for "immortelle" Anson and "Sage et malheureux" Cook and la Pérouse..However, these are merely an introduction to the enduring legacy of La Pérouse, the relevant canto is, in effect, a lengthy homage to the great French sailor. It is one of the more beautiful examples of the enduring interest in La Pérouse who, by 1805, had been missing for over a decade. Esménard (1770-1811) writes that the French people, dismayed, still wait and hope for his return, but probably in vain. In fact, both the text and illustration assume that La Pérouse has wrecked on some fatal island. With on both boards the coat of arms of Tsar Alexander I. Lacking the dedication to Napoleon, as can be expected. Some foxing throughout and a small faint waterstain in the upper margin, otherwise in good condition. Corners slight bumped, some very minor wear along the extremities and the inner hinges cracked, otherwise the binding is very good condition and very attractive.

Ricerche intorno alla natura dello stile

appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore, 1770. Cm. 20, pp. 164 (2, correzioni). Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli su tassello in marocchino rosso e fregi in oro al dorso. Qualche sporadica e trascurabile macchietta. Esemplare ben conservato.

Printing and the Mind of Man [215 : "The bible of Materialism" (.) "In the "Système" Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. He derived the moral and intellectual faculties from man's sensibility to impressions made by the external world, and saw human actions as entirely determined by pleasure and pain. He continued his direct attack on religion by attempting to show that it derived entirely from habit and custom. But the Systeme was not a negative or destructive book: Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a more desirable alternative. In fact, he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy .         Commentaries on the Laws of England. In Four Books. The Fourth Edition. 4 Vols.

Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1770-69. Large 4to. Bound in 4 uniform contemp. full calf. Raised bands. Titlelabels gone. Wear to spine ends. Some wear to spines and edges of covers, some scratches to covers, corners bumped. Some hinges weakening. (2),II,(8),485;(8),520,(18);(8),455,XXVII;(8),436,VII,(38) pp., 2 engraved plates (in vol. 2), Appendic to vol. 4. Wide-margined, light browning to margins. A few brownspots. ¶ "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history..... Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine... Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation... He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful" (PMM 212, the first edition 1765-69).

Dialogues sur le commerce des bleds. -

Londres (= Paris, Merlin), 1770. In-8 (19,5 x 12,5 cm.). (DBI 51, 460). Goldsmiths 10640. Kress 6730. Einaudi 2334. First edition. The Dialogues «are the most brilliant writings published up to that time in support of practical economics» (Palgrave II, 178).
