Medicina ex pulsu, sive systema doctrine sphygmicae

Vienna: Rudolph Graeffer, 1770. Very good. 8vo. xxxvi, [4], 268, [22] pp. + folding plate. Uncut and largely unopened copy in original "temporary" Austrian boards covered with decorative paper, some light chipping to spine and hinges, first twelve leaves with faded water-stain along lower corners. Preserved in a black cloth folding case. An extraordinary medical book artifact: this volume survives in completely original condition, unopened, and preserved in the original "temporary" boards; medical books of this early date almost never survive in "as issued" state. First edition of this thorough treatise on the pulse, in which the doctrines of Bordeu and Fouquet in particular are addressed. Wetsch (1737-1779), an Austrian by birth, was greatly interested in "organic pulses," i.e. the affections of each organ to produce a different kind of pulse, by which they may be recognized. In 1730 Solano de Luque, a Spanish physician, published a novel treatise on the subject, the "Lapis Lydius Apollinis." The work was hailed by Michel, Bordeau, and Fouquet, who continued Solano's work and made important contributions. Wetsch embraced these improvements, and even went to Paris to learn from the authors themselves. There Wetsch studied medicine and focused especially on physiology and pathology. Six years after the present work was published, he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Moscow. Literature: Waller 10258. Hirsch V, 915. Lesky 709. Blake 487 (Prague edition, published in the same year). See the long contemporary review of the "Medicina ex pulsu" in Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek (1770), Vol. 14, 1. Stuck, pp. 355-358. PROVENANCE: Bookplate inside upper cover of M.R. Heynsius van den Berg (1882-1969), medical doctor and director of the Consultatie Bureau van de Amsterdamse Vereniging tot Bestrijding van Tuberculose.

Chez Lambert.et Delalain., A la Haye, et se trouve à Paris 1770 - 119;47pp. Large octavo. Somewhat later full crimson morocco, spine elaborately gilt extra, gilt center and corner devices and borders on boards, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endsheets, a.e.g. Engraved extra-title, plate and 44 engraved head and tail-pieces. Title printed in red and black. A few light marks to binding, occasional minor marginal smudges, but a very good, large, crisp copy, attractively bound. First edition thus. A large paper copy (21.5 x 14 cm) on Hollande, with the title and caption-titles printed in black and red, and exhibiting the many errors in pagination in "Les Mois de Mai" characteristic of the earliest copies. This copy also includes the supplementary section of "Imitations de Pöetes Latins." All but two of the engravings were engraved by various hands after drawings by Charles Eisen, the exceptions being two tail-pieces by Marillier. Salomons describes this edition of Dorat's mildly erotic verse as "one of the most gracefully and beautifully illustrated books ever produced," and Cohen-De Ricci describe it as a "chef-d'oeuvre de XVIIIe siecle." SALOMONS, pp.80-1. COHEN-DE RICCI (VI), p.308-311. RAY (FRENCH) 31.

Rara seconda edizione accresciuta. Cfr. Iccu; Melzi, Dizionario opere anonime, II, p. 444; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II,2, p. 750, ove si menziona come reale luogo di stampa Coira, Società tipografica..

Additis adnotationibus quibus plurimarum plantarum vires indicantur.

typis Simonis Tissi,, Belluni, 1770 - Cm. 29,5, pp. (4) 400. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

He mentions Bougainville, makes a glancing reference to Malespine, Biron, et Wallis, et Surville, but he reserves most of his attention for "immortelle" Anson and "Sage et malheureux" Cook and la Pérouse..However, these are merely an introduction to the enduring legacy of La Pérouse, the relevant canto is, in effect, a lengthy homage to the great French sailor. It is one of the more beautiful examples of the enduring interest in La Pérouse who, by 1805, had been missing for over a decade. Esménard (1770-1811) writes that the French people, dismayed, still wait and hope for his return, but probably in vain. In fact, both the text and illustration assume that La Pérouse has wrecked on some fatal island. With on both boards the coat of arms of Tsar Alexander I. Lacking the dedication to Napoleon, as can be expected. Some foxing throughout and a small faint waterstain in the upper margin, otherwise in good condition. Corners slight bumped, some very minor wear along the extremities and the inner hinges cracked, otherwise the binding is very good condition and very attractive.

Horologia Nova ; or, the wew art of dialling in theory and practice

London, by the author 1770 - London, by the author, 1770. 4to of (4), 15, (1) pages and 1 plate ; late half-vellum. A good copy of the scarce and unique pamphlet on dialing by Benjamin Martin, more precisely on general dialing, but also on an improved method for making dials thanks to latitude and hour lines and on two new instruments invented for making dials : a “dialling sector” and a “trigon”. “In the 1770s saw the publication of a large number of tracts and pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects, many of them concerning new or improved instruments that he had devised. The first of these was The Description and Use of a Table Clock upon a New Construction, followed shortly by Horologia Nova, or the New Art of Dialling, both printed in quarto. To some extent these were complementary. As Martin pointed out in his preface to Horologia Nova, there was ‘so great an affinity between a clock and a dial that the truth of one necessarily depends on that of the other’. Advertisements in these tracts drew attention to ‘Horizontal dials for setting clocks true to a minute in any latitude between 20 and 60 degrees’, which, together with his new table clocks, were sold at his Fleet Street shop. A table of the equation of time, with directions for its use, was also published at about the same time. ‘And therefore’, wrote Martin, ‘if a gentleman has not a good clock and a good dial, with the means of keeping them always so, ’tis his own fault, and not mine’.” (Millburn, Benjamin Martin: Author, Instrument-Maker, and ‘Country Showman’, 1976, pages 152-153). Indeed, Martin in the present tract reduces “the whole Art of the Construction of Three different dials only [horizontal, vertical and polar ]” (see the Preface). But, as a well pratictionner in scientific instrument, Martin developped some methods and invented some news instrument. “Another thing which induced me to write on this subject was, the consideration of the great obscurity, in which the excellent invention of the line of latitudes, and its construction with the line of hours in the practical of dials [ ]. In the next place, as I have contrived two new Instruments for facilitating the ptractice of dialling, viz. the Dialling Sector, and Trigon ; I thought it incumbent upon me to describe their Nature, and the Manner of using them” (Preface). On the last page, Martin advertises for his pamphlet on clocks and three new Clocks he recently invented A rare publication and the only specifically dedicated to dialling by one the most prominent English instrumentmakers from the middle of 18th century. A very fine copy, inside very fresch wit good margins (the plate is mounted upside down). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ricerche intorno alla natura dello stile

appresso Giuseppe Galeazzi Reg. Stampatore, 1770. Cm. 20, pp. 164 (2, correzioni). Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli su tassello in marocchino rosso e fregi in oro al dorso. Qualche sporadica e trascurabile macchietta. Esemplare ben conservato. Cfr. Firpo II, p. 512; Gamba, 2147; Parenti, Prime edizioni italiane, p. 67; Iccu..
