         Pessach-Haggadah

A Treatise upon Artificial Electricity, in which are given Solutions of a Number of Interesting Electric Phoenomena, hitherto unexplained. To which is added, an essay on the Mild and Slow Electricity which prevails in the Atmosphere During Serene Weather.- London: printed for J. Nourse, 1776. Shuki sanpo [trans.: Selected Jewels of Mathematical Method]

Many woodcut illus. & diagrams in the text. 43; 44; 39; 49; 55 folding leaves. Five vols. 8vo, orig. patterned blue wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Edo: Suharaya Mohei, 1769. First edition of this important and influential mathematical book. "The Seki school was the most popular of the many schools of mathematics in Japan. Yoriyuki Arima (1714-1783), Lord of Kurume, was one of its leaders and was the first to publish its secret theories of algebra. Arima personifies the anomaly of a member of a hereditary warrior class drawn, in a time of enforced peace, to mathematics of the mostly highly abstract and purely aesthetic sort; he, too, had been a pupil of Yamaji, and he took Fujita under his protection and assisted him in the publication of Seiyo sampo. Arima's own Shuki sampo was as popular in its time as Fujita's work, and Aida drew heavily upon both books."-D.S.B., I. p. 83. In this work, Arima "described 150 problems chosen from all fields of wasan research in the Seki tradition. Included were problem-solving procedures - though he gave no theoretical explanations of them. This was the first printed book in which one could find, for instance, a detailed description of Seki's written algebra, called tenzanjutsu. Thenceforth tenzanjutsu became a standard working tool of wasan students in general - almost a full century after its invention by Seki."-Sugimoto & Swain, Science & Culture in Traditional Japan, pp. 365-66. In this work, Arima gave the value of pi which was correct to 29 decimal places. The problems relate to indeterminate equations, the various roots of an equation, the application of algebra to geometry, the inscription of spheres within spheres, maxima and minima, binomial series, and stereometry. While this book was published under the name of Bunkei Toyota, it was actually written by Arima. ❧ Smith, History of Mathematics, Vol. I, pp. 536-37.

The Professed Cook: Or the Modern Art of Cookery, Pastry, and Confectionary, Made Plain and Easy. Consisting of the Most Approved Methods in the French as well as English Cookery Translated from Les Soupes de la Cour by the Editor, who has been Many Years Clerk of the Kitchen in some of the First Families in this Kingdom. The Second Edition. London: R.

Davis and T. Caslon, 1769. - 8vo (208 x 123mm), pp. [i]-xvi, [48 (contents)], [1]-286, [2 (blank)], [2 (part title, verso blank)], 289-588, [2 (blank l.)]; p. 463 misnumbered '46'; type-ornament headbands, woodcut tailpiece; light marginal foxing and browning, especially on outer quires; contemporary British sheep, boards with borders of double gilt rules, spine gilt in compartments, all edges speckled red; rubbed and scuffed, small losses at extremities, joints cracked, nevertheless an internally fresh and clean copy, retaining the medial and final blanks T8 and 2P8; provenance: M. Findlater (near-contemporary ownership inscription on front free endpaper) – 'The Property of a Lady' (sale, Sotheby's London, 10 April 1997, lot 337) – Christopher Hogwood.Second English edition. Originally published as The Art of Modern Cookery Displayed in two volumes in 1767, The Professed Cook is a translation of the cookbook Les soupers de la cour; ou, L'art de travailler toutes sortes d'alimens (1755); Les soupers had been written by one 'Menon', one of the most prolific culinary writers of the mid-eighteenth century, a proponent of modern cuisine and also, since his lifetime, one of the most well-received authors in his field: Quayle considers this current edition of The Professed Cook '[p]robably the most important title to appear in England in that year [1769], other than Mrs. Raffald's classical work [i.e. The Experienced English Housekeeper]'.This second edition retains the running title The Art of Modern Cookery Displayed, volume signatures and part-title from the first edition, but does not yet reveal the name of the translator and editor, Bernard Clermont, which would be printed on the title of the third edition (for which see the following item), where Clermont also stated that he was most recently employed by the Earl of Abingdon. As a French work translated to the English language and culture, The Professed Cook is most interesting: the translator-editor explains that he brought back the French original from the continent for his own use, found it most useful in the kitchen, and was thus inspired to translate and explain 'the French Names of all the Different Dishes [ , so that] Every Bill of Fare Becomes Intelligible and Familiar'. He also emphasises that every attempt was made to adjust the seasonality of produce from the French to the London markets, with the help of tradesmen handling fish and poultry, and a gardener (see preface). Overall, this work provides a glimpse into the market baskets and dining-rooms of English diners with French affinities: exotic sausages require definition in English terms; the crème brulée contains orange flowers and 'citron'; more than a dozen omelette variations are given; and unfiltered Turkish coffee is presented as the best, ending on the note that 'Caffé au Lait, viz. with Milk, is very much à la mode in France' (p. 585).This work is rare, particularly in this edition: ESTC lists only two copies of the second edition (British Library and Harvard), to which can be added the Lilly Library's copy (lacking blanks T8 and 2P8); similarly – apart from this copy, which was sold at Sotheby's in 1997 – only one copy of the second edition is recorded by Anglo-American auction records since 1975.Bitting, p. 92 (note); Cagle 605 (lacking T8 and 2P8); Maclean, p. 99; Oxford, p. 101; Simon, BG 354.          Collection of five views of Russian and Siberian Cities].

Imp. Akad. Nauk Skt. Peterburg -1771 1769 - Five views on four sheets, including Vue de la ville de Kokchajsk du côté de la Wolga (34 x 43 cm; sheet 49 x 59 cm); Vue de la ville de Sinbirsk au nord-est (35 x 45 cm; sheet 48.5 x 60 cm); Vue de la ville de Mangasei, Vue de la ville de Kousneszk (two views on one plate 49 x 36 cm; sheet 59.5 x 48.5 cm); Vue de la ville de Pénze sur la Soura du côté du nord-est (19.5 x 45 cm; sheet 24.5 x 59.5 cm), with captions in Russian and French, printed on Dutch handmade paper watermarked C & I Honig IV; central fold, scratches to surface and spotting to Vue de la ville de Kousneszk. A collection of the earliest views of the Russian cities on the Volga river and in Siberia, engraved by Russian masters. These views are part of a series that includes a total of 34 prints. The process of their publication spanned almost forty years (from the creation of the first drawings until the prints were issued) and involved seven artists and twelve Russian engravers. The cities were drawn on the spot between 1733 and 1766 during two great expeditions; the originals were later corrected and re-worked between 1748 and 1768, before being printed at the Academy between 1769 and 1771. The views offered here of Mangazey and other Siberian cities are based on drawings made during the Great Northern Expedition (1733–1743), ordered by Empress Anna Ioanovna. Under the leadership of Vitus Bering the expeditionwas charged with mapping the eastern reaches of Siberia and, if possible, continuing on to the western shores of North America in order to explore and map them as well. The twenty eight views of towns encountered on the way, including Novgorod, Tver, Kazan, Tobolsk and Yakutsk, were drawn by the expedition artists J.C. Berckhan and J.W. Lursenius. Delays in passing the drawings to the Engraving Chamber and disruptions in the engraving process meant the plates were not finished until 1771. The twelve views of cities in the European part of Russia, including Kokshaysk, Sinbirsk, Kuznetsk and Penza, are based on original drawings by Alexander Ivanovich Svechin (end of 1720s – 1796). Svechin, a colonel and artist, headed an expedition to the Volga region in 1765, commissioned by Catherine the Great in order to investigate whether Kazan's oak forests would provide a decent timber supply for the construction of Russia's naval fleet. With the help of a 'camera obscura', Svechin produced twenty-eight drawings during this trip, including fourteen views of cities on the Volga river that Makhaev then had to review on Catherine's orders. The result was twelve amended versions of the cities, in which the artist corrected inaccuracies of perspective and unified the composition. In December 1768 the drawings were finally sent to the Engraving Chamber of the Academy of Sciences. The engraved plates were sold individually and are exceptionally rare. We were able to trace only two copies comprising all 34 views, both in Russia – in the collections of the State Hermitage Museum and the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. Outside Russia the collection of these views was found only in the Eton library, where the copy, in a modern binding, is lacking one plate. ????????? ? ? «???????? ?????????? ? ????????? ???????». ????? ??????

A New Chart of History. To Benjamin Franklin LL.D. F.R.S. this chart is in testimony of esteem & friendship, inscribed by his most obliged humble servt. Joseph Priestley.

London, J. Johnson, J. Bowles, C. Bowles, R. Sayer, T. Jefferys, 1769. - 65.5 x 99.5 cm., 2 large sheets joined vertically. Engraved throughout by Edmund Butterworth. "Pulman script. Butterworth sculpt. Leeds." Hand-colored highlighting in pink and green. Some light soiling, relatively small ink stain in lower blank margin, and a few repairs. Overall in good condition, if just barely so. *** FIRST EDITION. Priestley's Description of a New Chart of History, initially published in London the same year, was meant to accompany and explain this chart. According to ESTC, below the imprint of the second edition of the book, 1770, in square brackets, was noted that the price of the book alone was 1 s. 6d. or with the Chart 10s. 6d. Most extant copies of editions of the book seem to lack the chart. There were at least ten subsequent and revised editions by 1801, and one edition published in the U.S. before 1800, in New Haven in 1792. No later edition before 1806 is listed in American Imprints. A New Chart of History is said to have gone through fifteen editions by 1816. According to Josiah, JCB has only the New Haven, 1792 edition, without the chart.Priestley, English theologian, Dissenting clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, grammarian, educator, and liberal political theorist, who published over 150 works, published A New Chart of History and its prose explanation as a supplement to his Lectures on History and General Policy. Together with his Chart of Biography (1765), Priestley believed these charts would allow students to "trace out distinctly the dependence of events to distribute them into such periods and divisions as shall lay the whole claim of past transactions in a just and orderly manner. The Chart of History lists events in 106 separate locations; it illustrates Priestley's belief that the entire world's history was significant, a relatively new development in the 18th century, which had begun with Voltaire and William Robertson. The world's history is divided up into the following geographical categories: Scandinavia, Poland, Russia, Great Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey in Europe, Turkey in Asia, Germany, Persia, India, China, Africa and America. Priestley aimed to show the history of empires and the passing of power; the subtitle of the Description that accompanied the chart was A View of the Principal Revolutions of Empire that have taken place in the World.*** ESTC T12698 (locates copies at British Library [2], Harvard University Map Collection, Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, and Newberry Library). Crook H/419. Calcott himself remains obscure, he seems to have been something of a mendicant scholar, of whom Mackey said: 'It is a romantic fact . that words written down in 1750 or 1760 by this only half-known, gentle, much wandering man, two or three times described in Lodge Minutes as 'in unfortunate circumstances,' should afterwards be on the tongues of millions of men who have never so much as heard his name!' Traccia di antichi timbretti. Fioriture sparse, qualche carta brunita, sporadici e marginali aloni. Shuki sanpo [trans.: Selected Jewels of Mathematical Method]

Many woodcut illus. & diagrams in the text. 43; 44; 39; 49; 55 folding leaves. Five vols. 8vo, orig. patterned blue wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Edo: Suharaya Mohei, 1769.First edition of this important and influential mathematical book. Arima's own Shuki sampo was as popular in its time as Fujita's work, and Aida drew heavily upon both books."-D.S.B., I. p. 83.In this work, Arima "described 150 problems chosen from all fields of wasan research in the Seki tradition. While this book was published under the name of Bunkei Toyota, it was actually written by Arima.❧ Smith, History of Mathematics, Vol. I, pp. 536-37.

         Poetiske Skrifter.

1769 1769 - 2 bd. Udgivne af Forfatterens Daatters Søn, Töger Reenberg Teilmann [Under medvirken af Bolle Willum Luxdorph og L.N. Skov]. Med Kofod Anchers Fortale. Kbhvn.: Godiche 1769. Bibl. Danica IV, 243. Ehrencron-Müller VI, 433.

Relation Historique de L'Expedition contre les Indiens de L'Ohio en MDCCLXIV. Commandee par le Chevalier Henry Bouquet

Chez Marc-Michel Rey 1769 - Bound in fine modern 1/4 calf over marbled boards. 20 cm. xvi, 147, [10] pp. 4 folding maps and plans, 2 full-page engraved plates. First French edition, after the 1765 Philadelphia and 1766 London eds. Institutional stamp on title and half-title. An important account of Colonel Henry Bouquet's Ohio expedition into the Muskingham valley against the Pontiac. In 1763, Pontiac, a chief of the Ottawa people, united various native peoples in an attempt to drive advancing British settlers from Ohio country. In 1764, Col. Bouquet, the commander of Fort Pitt, successfully lead an offensive against Pontiac's forces with 1500 soldiers. Rather than face the dispersed Indian bands who used hit and run tactics, Bouquet targeted their population centers (i.e. villages) with his superior numbers to force peace. According to Howes, the book was "originally ascribed to Thomas Hutchins, who accompanied this expedition and executed the 2 plans; but that the book was prepared by Smith, from Bouquet's notes. This campaign gave Pontiac's conspiracy its death-blow," Howes. Includes a map of the Ohio region, diagrams of Indian villages, a plan of the battle of Bushy Run (Pennsylvania), and a map of Bouquet's march. Refs: Sabin 84647; Howes S693; Evans 10167.
