De l'origine et des progrès d'une science nouvelle.

London & Paris: Desaint,, 1768. Octavo (193 x 118 mm). Rebound in modern marbled paper boards, brown morocco label lettered in gilt laid down to spine. Woodcut headpiece. Without the half-title and the terminal errata leaf (the latter as called for by Sraffa). Contents faintly foxed, light dampstain to lower edge of title leaf, edges of the cancel B1 browned, fore edge strengthened with japan paper, overall a very good copy. First edition of undoubtedly one of the scarcest of Dupont's works, and probably one of the most successful publications promoting physiocracy. Schumpeter, in his discussion on the physiocrats, calls Dupont "by far the ablest of the lot" (p. 226) and Palgrave notes: "If Quesnay was the father of physiocracy, Dupont was its godfather, for he gave it its name by the publication of his Physiocratie... a collection of Quesnay's articles, which the editor introduced by a Discours". Sraffa notes that it was "actually published in December 1767".

Quaestio Theologica. Quis fecit hominem ad imaginem suam? Gen. c. I. V. 27

Paris: Hecquet for the Sorbonne, 1768. Double-sheet engraved broadside (122 x 89 cm.), the two sheets printed in landscape format and pasted together at bottom edge of the upper sheet and top edge of the lower sheet, platemarks approximately 54 x 65 cm. (top sheet) and 54 x 68.5 cm. (bottom sheet), the upper sheet containing an allegorical engraving of Christ healing the infirm, with beginning of signature "Invenit et pixit"..., artist's / engraver's name(s) hidden by the lower sheet, and with imprint "à Paris chez Hecquet place de Cambray à l'Image St. Maur"; the lower sheet with engraved cartouche of putti drawing back a curtain which encloses a blank area in which is printed the letterpress text of the thesis, with a smaller ornamental cartouche at the top of the sheet containing the letterpress caption Infirmum Sananti and another small cartouche at the foot with the letterpress words Pro Sorbonica. A fine, dark impression on thick paper. No visible watermark. Preseved folded three times leaving creasing at folds; one tiny hole in upper sheet. *** A very large two-sheet illustrated thesis print, announcing the defense of a dissertation at the Faculty of Theology of the Sorbonne, and including the text of the thesis. This spectacular broadside exemplifies the use of monumental engravings for informational and celebratory purposes in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century educational institutions. This 4 x 3-foot thesis print (or other copies from the same edition), would have been posted on the walls of the Sorbonne, to announce the public defense of his thesis for the title of Baccalaureat by Pierre-Etienne (Petrus Stephanus) Maillard, described as a priest from Chartres (Presbyter Carnotensii). The imprint states that he will defend the thesis at the Faculty of Theology in Paris from 6 in the morning to 6 in the afternoon on 10 November 1768. "In early modern institutions of higher education, academic dissertations to be defended in public were published in the form of decorated broadsheets summarising the student's conclusions. The first aim of these engraved posters was to advertise the disputation and to provide an overview of the themes [called theses or conclusions] to be discussed. They also presented a visual programme of its unfolding, and could be kept as a souvenir after the ceremony. [Having originated in Jesuit colleges,] this practice was common mostly in the Catholic countries: Italy, France, Southern Netherlands, Germanic countries and Austria.... Thesis defences, or disputations, were used as exams to conclude academic studies of master or doctorate, and to demonstrate the student's graduation. Pro gradu disputations were of great significance within the academic system. They were subject to rigorous etiquette and important pageantry dictated by the educational establishments. Illustrious guests, chamber orchestras, processions through the town and banquets turned them into social events. The institutions organised the festivities ... Such ceremonies were very expensive, because they included the printing of the thesis posters, the decoration of the college hall and the organisation of a dinner for the audience. Therefore, only wealthy men could afford this, while the others just took the regular exams..." (De Muelenaere, pp. 49-50). Preparation of the thesis prints often took up an inordinate amount of the students' time (cf. Rice, 155-6), and their production became a sub-specialty of some print publishers. Originally from Abbéville, Robert Hecquet (1693-1775) settled in Paris and set up shop on the place Cambrai near the Sorbonne (now the place du Collège-de-France), as an engraver and printseller. He quickly gravitated toward the sales end, employing other engravers, and specialized in the production of illustrated thesis "placards" (called "frontispices" in the Inventaire du fonds français). Hecquet advertised his services to students from the provinces through announcements in the Mercure de France (IFF18, vol. 11, pp. 260-261). After his death in 1775 his thesis copperplates continued to be used for well over a decade (cf. IFF18, Hecquet no. 25, a thesis broadside from 1789 using one of his plates). During the vogue for thesis prints (which had originated as small unillustrated pamphlets), which began in the early 17th century and lasted until sometime after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, their imagery grew both in size and in complexity. Decoding the iconography became a game: "the chief fascination of these prints lies in their rich iconography. The subject-matter is usually derived from classical sources ... but ...heraldic and emblematic elements transform the narrative into a visual encomium extolling the student's sponsor, and sometimes also his institution. The imagery tends to be intricate, recondite, witty and playful. These prints are perhaps best understood as visual entertainments, exercises in interpretation designed to delight and instruct a learned audience. To decipher them is to enter the inverted world of Jesuit symbolism, in which pagan stories illustrate Christian precepts, female figures personify male virtues, and material objects reveal abstract truths" (Rice, 156-58). The upper sheet of these broadsides typically consisted of a large engraved allegorical scene, while the lower sheet contained an engraved decorative cartouche with a space at the center for the letterpress text, printed in small type. The engraving would be printed first. In the present example, the artist's and engraver's name or names in the lower left of the upper sheet are obscured by the bottom sheet. The illustration was probably used for a variety of theological theses. While the thesis subject is Genesis 1.27 ("et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam...."), the engraving is a New Testament scene, showing Christ in a colonnade, with John and Peter behind him, reaching out his hand in blessing toward an approaching group bearing a lame man on a litter; in the background is a riparian landscape with a village and distant mountain. I locate no other copies of the broadside. Not in the Inventaire du Fonds français, graveurs du XVIIIe siècle (vol 11, article Hecquet). Cf. Thieme-Becker 16: 214-15; G. De Muelenaere, "Images of the Courtier in Flemish Thesis Prints (17th-18th centuries)" Paper presented at the Renaissance Society of America Conference in Berlin, 26-28 March 2015, Ghent University Academic Bibliography (GEMCA): Papers in Progress 2017 vol. 4, no.1 (online), pp. 49-62; and Louise Rice, "Jesuit thesis prints and the festive academic defence at the Collegio Romano," The Jesuits: Cultures, Sciences and the Arts 1540-1773, vol.         The first Scene of the Maid of the Mill, as Designed by Mr. Richards. Fine large engraving by William Woollett (1735-1785) after the painting by John Inigo Richards (1731-1810)

London: Wm. Woollett, 1768. Scarce. Fagan: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Engraved Works of William Woollett 60. BM: 1766, 1114.554. "In autumn 1764... [Arnold] was engaged by John Beard as Covent Garden's harpsichordist; his duties included rehearsing the singers and composing such new music as might be required. He compiled three pastiche operas at this time... The Maid of the Mill was by far the most successful... Bickerstaff's libretto was a bowdlerized version of Richardson's Pamela, and the music broke new ground by borrowing not only from recent Italian operas but also from operas produced in Paris by Monsigny, Philidor and Duni." TNG, Vol. 1, p. 616. Richards was a noted scene painter, machinist, and theatre designer. The present work is his best-known scene design. There are three known versions of the oil painting, one held at the Yale Center for British Art in the Paul Mellon Collection. For an extensive list of Richards's theatrical scenes see Highfill et al., Vol. 12, pp. 358-362.. Large oblong folio. Image size 380 x 470 mm., sheet size 406 x 480 mm. Printed on ivory laid paper. The scene depicts a barn to the left with two women standing by the entrance, one of them (Fanny) is mending a net. There is a mill in the centre, from which a person looks out a window; a man carries a sack over a gate. A woman (Patty) sits reading in the upstairs window of a house to the right; Giles crosses the courtyard and gestures to the left. Very slightly worn; small repair to verso.; hinged at upper corners of verso. A very good impression.

The Orphanage in Haarlem (Weeshuis Haarlem). The 'Heilige Geesthuis' or City orphanage, on the Krocht in Haarlem before it was to be dismantled, 1768. Currently the location of the Hofje van Oorschot.

      - There are at least seven known drawing by Cornelis van Noorde depicting the former Orphanage in Haarlem. The institute was dismantled in 1768 and locally replaced by the so-called Hofje van Oorschot, built from the year after. One drawing is in Russia at the Pushkin museum (inv. 7766) and other six drawings by van Noorde at the the Noord-Hollands Archief in Haarlem with the same corner of the city represented. All the drawings in public collections appear to be much detailed and proportioned in respect to the drawing in our collection. The dog-shaped wind banderole on the top of the building on the left has lost its original shape and is here indistinguishable. The portal of the church is different, the lantern is shorter, and even the buildings in the far right background look much smaller. This might therefore be a late copy after one of the other drawings. Many details would have become clearer if the author of the drawing could draw after reality. Nevertheless, this is a quite charming proof from the late eighteenth- or beginning of the nineteenth century.   Drawing in pencil, pen and black and gray ink, with gray wash; total: 295 x 314 mm; in very good condition.

Et celui des Porcelaines rares & anciennes, tant du Japon que de la Chine, de Saxe & de France Effets de Laques, Meubles précieux & Bijoux, Par S. Ph. Poirier, Marchand

Engraved frontis. xii, 92, [4] pp. of ads. Small 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Vente, 1768. The catalogue of artworks in the collection of Gaignat (1697-1768), secretary of the Cabinet du Roi under Louis XV and famed book and art collector. Blessed with a massive fortune and little responsibility, he formed both an art collection and library considered amongst the grandest of the 18th century. Catherine the Great offered 240,000 francs for Gaignat's pictures but was rebuffed. She eventually purchased Murillo's "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" (no. 59) for 18,000 livres. After a detailed biographical sketch of Gaignat, the catalogue begins with a supposed Mona Lisa, likely a copy by one of Da Vinci's disciples. The sale of pictures, which counted works by Titian, Breughel, Teniers, and Van Dyck, etc., totaled 208,000 livres. The catalogue (241 lots), priced throughout in a contemporary hand with some additional annotations, also describes sculptures, bronzes, porcelain, jewels, etc. Fine copy. Concludes with a list of 34 recent auction catalogues by Rémy. ❧ N.B.G., Vol. 20, cols. 170-71.

Bachelor's degree and licence in canon law].

31 August, Coimbra 1768 - Single sheet of vellum, 50 cms. x 34 cms., folded in two and rolled. Contains two printed certificates, each with woodcut initial and decorative borders, signed and with green ribbons and seals. Lightly soiled but very good. Two signed documents, furnished with seals and printed head-to-head on a single sheet of vellum, certificating for one Simão Luis Pereira de Alvim a bachelor's degree and licence in canon law. The first is printed in Latin, and notes that on 10 June 1768 the student obtained a bachelor's degree at the University of Coimbra. The licence is in Portuguese, and informs that the student had done eight courses of eight months, six of which were for the bachelor's degree. To obtain the licence (after two further years of study), he had undertaken a twenty-four hour examination on 29 June 1768. The "twenty-four hour" examination process may have entailed taking away a set of texts for a day before being examined on them. Such a "twenty-four hour" examination process is explicitly spelled out in an eighteenth-century legal diploma from Palma de Mallorca that we have had. We understand from our vendor that a document in the Portuguese National Archive (PT/TT/MCO/A-L/001/0043/43337, which we have not seen) shows that this student had studied for his bachelor's in Salamanca. The present bachelor's degree certificate is effectively therefore pro forma. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Poirier, Marchand

      - Engraved frontis. xii, 92, [4] pp. ? N.B.G., Vol. 20, cols. 170-71. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Volume 5 and 6 with charters from the year 1605 until 1795 were not included in this commission. Some minor imperfections and scratches on all covers, a number of corners a bit worn. All four volumes weigh around 20 kg. and are all bound with marbled endpapers.) The only general charterbook concerning the province of Friesland, published with all official documents from the Frisian legal history, compiled by the Baron Georg Frederik thoe Schwartzenberg en Hohenlansberg, 1733-1783. The entire work is bound by the Van Damme Bindery in four very beautiful, gold-tooled bindings. The Van Damme Bindery was active in the year 1750-1786 in the city Amsterdam, its bindings were regarded as part of the best bindings that were made in Amsterdam during the Eighteenth Century. This copy was part of an exceptionally important commission by the States of Friesland for five copies of the first four volumes, all printed on royal-sized paper and bound in abundantly gold-tooled bindings by the Van Damme Bindery. One of these copies is held at the National Library (KB) at The Hague, one of the others presented here. All four bindings have wide lacework on the covers and in the middle a black central ornament with two lions passant (the coat of arms of Friesland) under a starry sky. Framed within a large triumphal arch (very distinctive for this bindery), standing on a a black border with rectangular blocks. Volume 1 also features two figures standing on this border, probably Mars and Mercury, on both the front and back cover. The spines are decorated with floral and ornamental designs, leaving space for the title and volume indication. Good and clean interiors, entirely printed on royal-sized paper with broad margins, easily measuring 8 to 10 cm. A beautiful and eyecatching set, one of two known surviving copies of this splendid commission. Eekhoff, W. (1856).       Wm. Woollett, London 1768 - Large oblong folio. Image size 380 x 470 mm., sheet size 406 x 480 mm. Printed on ivory laid paper. The scene depicts a barn to the left with two women standing by the entrance, one of them (Fanny) is mending a net. A woman (Patty) sits reading in the upstairs window of a house to the right; Giles crosses the courtyard and gestures to the left. Very slightly worn; small repair to verso.; hinged at upper corners of verso. A very good impression. Scarce. Fagan: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Engraved Works of William Woollett 60. BM: 1766, 1114.554."In autumn 1764. [Arnold] was engaged by John Beard as Covent Garden's harpsichordist; his duties included rehearsing the singers and composing such new music as might be required. He compiled three pastiche operas at this time. The Maid of the Mill was by far the most successful. Bickerstaff's libretto was a bowdlerized version of Richardson's Pamela, and the music broke new ground by borrowing not only from recent Italian operas but also from operas produced in Paris by Monsigny, Philidor and Duni." The entire work is bound by the Van Damme Bindery in four very beautiful, gold-tooled bindings. A beautiful and eyecatching set, one of two known surviving copies of this splendid commission.Eekhoff, W. (1856).       London: Wm. Woollett, Jany. 15th 1768. Bickerstaff's libretto was a bowdlerized version of Richardson's Pamela, and the music broke new ground by borrowing not only from recent Italian operas but also from operas produced in Paris by Monsigny, Philidor and Duni."
